btw - the inflation surge - I think it's a good bet to say that the stock market stumbles of the last couple of weeks were due to news of that report leaking out to the trading houses in New York early. That would be why there was so much of a market reaction then, and not so much now.
Always remember, whenever you hear "breaking news" that you think will affect stock prices, the major players have already known about it for a week or two. Nothing is truly secret - nothing goes unleaked to those willing to pay. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 14, 2018 09:43 AM (V2Yro) 67

50 This particular painting can be seen at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, down the street from the Kimball. They've got an excellent collection of Russell's and Remington's, along with a lot of other good stuff, and it is well worth the visit if you're ever in DFW.
Posted by: Tom Servo at February 14, 2018 09:38 AM (V2Yro) Just as a regular visit to the metroplex, we always thought Ft Worth had better art than Dallas, though Dallas may have caught up. It reminds me of when JFK and Jackie spent the last night before going to Dallas. The people of Ft Worth knew that Jackie loved art, so a very quick last minute effort was made to fill their suite with privately owned masterpieces. Society matrons were driving to the hotel with Picassos and Van Goghs wrapped in towels. There was a Russell and an Eakins and more. But sure, yeah, Texas killed Kennedy, not that little commie loser. 184/193, Japanese actually has two languages, kind of, one for women and one for men. They actually use different words for the same thing, based on the gender of who is speaking. I had a friend who lived in Japan for years, and she said it was an ongoing joke with the Japanese that they thought all US servicemen were gay -- because they learned Japanese from their girlfriends and so used the feminine words.

All RIGHT! Russell! I knew, eventually, we'd get some real art on here.
Makes me feel right at home. Growing up in NE OK, in the middle of the last century, there were still a lot of folks alive from the wilder west days. The Daltons, who met their end just a little ways north of here, once plotted to kidnap Frank Phillips (of Phillips 66) but my grandfather helped Frank evade them. Owlhoots may not have been liked, but they were respected. There's still an annual "Cow Thieves & Outlaws Reunion" over at "Woolaroc" -- which was once Frank's private ranch, now a museum and animal preserve park. And just to bring it full circle, in the Woolaroc museum, there's many a painting and sculpture by Russell. I spent some time in my youth studying them. 69 Rye whiskey - wasn't that more or less the American whiskey for the longest? Corn whiskey is big these days, I know, but from reading older literature and news articles, it seems rye was our ancestors' chosen one. Wonder why
Posted by: Your Decidedly Devious Uncle Palpatine Whiskey distilling knowledge largely came from its production in England. As corn was sort of a late comer to Europe, grain in the form of wheat, barley and rye were used for distilling purposes there. That conventional wisdom translated here with migration. It wasn't until the late 1700's that someone got industrious and used Indian corn to make whisky in far west Virginia (now Kentucky) and this later became known as bourbon whisky. I surmise that corn whisky became predominant here because it was sort of invented here. Bourbon whisky is the quintessential American spirit. You can track America's culture by its bourbon. A thought:
The Russia Collusion thing has been built up so much and for so long with so little to show for it, but what happens to future calls from the press to investigate wrongdoing from Republican presidents if Donald Trump serves out his term? The media, as you all know, is tanking its credibility, and they pretty obviously don't know it. And yet, that credibility is going to be so shot that a Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio or whoever is the next Republican President's administration could engage in flagrant wrongdoing and use the press's witch hunt for Trump as cover. The only way this Russia thing works in the press's favor will be if they actually get Trump out of office, and even then it'll by a Pyrrhic victory since they've placed themselves up as the opposition part to Republican presidents. It's just interesting to watch the self-immolation, really. Posted by: TheJamesMadison at February 14, 2018 10:53 AM (n9gGi) Posted by: JackStraw at February 14, 2018 10:54 AM (/tuJf) 283

Hell of a day to be late to the thread. Damn doctor appointments.
I love this painting and not just because I'm a single-action revolver fan. (That doesn't hurt.) It's a fun scene with the cards strewn on the ground and the liquor bottle. But Russell's use of color throughout the painting is outstanding. The horses and saddle details, the sky in the distance and as reflected in the hotel windows, the shadows, where appropriate, on the buildings in the background all seem to fit the scene. The rowdy drunks contrast with the neat, straight lines of the town's buildings on the right side and emphasize the action. I don't know if this qualifies as 'great' art (it does to me) but it is expressive and effectively conveys the image in action, and color. It would be easy to write a story, at least a scene, around the painting. Thanks, CBD. This choice of painting was a pleasure. Posted by: JTB at February 14, 2018 11:03 AM (V+03K) 304

Rolling Rock wasn't what I would gravitate to as a beer, but it was religion where I went to school and once you accepted that it was light you could appreciate its slight hoppiness. The bottle with the 33, there were 33 words, 33 was the end of Prohibition, it was the number of a horse somebody bet on. There were a lot of 33 stories. However, it was actually brewed in glass lined tanks in Old Latrobe. The new version, which is some sort of Atlanta swill, has the old label in quotes as a "tribute", which is bullshit. Rolling Rock may never have been a premium beer but it was distinctive, it had an identity, and that's gone. ..... I don't have a particular issue with the mixing of alcohol into cocktails, in fact it's kind of my livelihood. With that said, mixers should enhance the alcohol, IMO. There are water soluble flavors in alcohol that come out with the addition of ice cubes or a splash of water. Branch water, tonics and soda aid in absorption. Bitters, small additions of simple syrup, marrying with aperitif wines, can all produce nice accents. But, drowning a perfectly reasonable shot of alcohol in Coca Cola or adding low-grade sugary liqueurs directly into the bottle is a travesty. You are basically saying "I don't like alcohol, cover up the flavor". I have an affinity for patrons that order Scotch or bourbon with a splash of water, gin and tonics or martini drinkers. But the Long Island Tea crowd that likes a melange of low grade liquor doused in mixers and soft drinks always makes me cock an eyebrow, though I happily serve them because I'm in it for the tips.
