The Cliffs At Etretat
Claude Monet

No! I will not post those rather crappy portraits of the Obamas. I'm not as incensed as many....I think they are crappy portraits, but not surprising. The both of them are narcissists, so I am not shocked that they couldn't be content with a classic work.

Here is something for those who are disappointed that they can't rant and rave about the Obamas.

12 CBD errs in thinking a Monet will stop us from hurling imprecations at the Obamas. Why should it?

I will add that Obama is not a narcissist. He's a solipsist. He doesn't believe he's better than everyone else; rather he really doesn't believe that there is anyone else. You can see this in his annoyance at anything which challenges that belief. But, like the King of Pointland, he always rallies to his One True Faith.

Posted by: Mikey NTH -Exchange Your Old Wishful Thinking for a New Hopeful Shouting at The Outrage Outlet! at February 13, 2018 09:34 AM (hLRSq)

31 Monet really understood how color worked. The pale yellow/orange highlights on the peaks are complimented nicely by the dark blues and aquas. The blue of the water is broken up by the warm reflections from the rocks. Pinks in the sky tell us that it is late afternoon, as do the high highlights in the rocks. The sky blues, sea greens and aquas are broken up by the orange boat sails. Notice how the color of the sails matches the color on the rocks.

The main colors are blue/green and yellow/orange. That's it. They are opposites on the color wheel. But look what he does with them.

Posted by: JackStraw at February 13, 2018 09:42 AM (/tuJf)

62 Look also what Monet does with texture and scale. With a few flicks of the wrist, He shows us how craggy and rough the rocks are. He doesn't need to get photorealistic to communicate that. Look how puny the sailboats are to the landscape. The rocks tower over them, but yet it doesn't look threatening. Instead, maybe because of the calmness of the water and the dominant blues, the scene is peaceful. Only the yellow/oranges break up the monotone, lazy feel, but only slightly.

Well, yes and no. "Cleaning up the Navy" was a pretty popular hobby for politicians in different eras. There was a huge, huge scandal right at the end of WWI, when a hot-shit Navy Under-Sec got in on outing the gay action in Rhode Island, and was officially rebuked by Congress for being over-zealous in his persecution of homosexuality. Youse can look it up.

Question 2: If the Senate passes an immigration bill with DACA path to citizenship, no e-verify and no chain migration, but the House passes only legalization and work permits, e-verify, end to chain and lottery; would they go to reconciliation where the conference could accept all the house stuff and pass both chambers with GOP 50+1 majorities.

If so and they do it, it, he Dem squealing would be wonderful. GOP would win in 2018, 2020, and so on.

Old Josephus Daniels had something to do with elevating the nature of the sailor.

The great collection Left-Handed Monkey Wrench: Stories and Essays by Richard McKenna has the story. ISTR the title was the "The Wreck of Uncle Josephus". He felt it was so important he worked on it just before his death. It was how SECVAV Daniels led to the rise and triumph of the common sailor.

Well, Lucy the Borzoi won the Hound Group last night at Westminster. I suppose I should be happy but, God forgive me, I'm not.

Lucy is the top-winning Borzoi in breed history with about 30 Best in Show wins. She was Reserve Best in Show at Westminster in 2016. The previous Borzoi that won the Hound Group was Ivy Rose back in 1993. Between these two there were a lot of great Borzoi - Nara, Hunter, Casper, Virago, our Lacey - who won their breed but never even got looked at in the Group.

Lucy is a good dog but she has the faults of her breeding: straight front, ears too big and freight-train length. While she's a good Borzoi, I don't think her quality justifies all the Best in Show wins she's gotten. There were even better dogs in the Group last night; Her Majesty was rooting for Monkey the Basset Hound.

The others I mentioned were all owner-handled but Lucy is handled - impeccably, I might add - by a professional (Valerie Atkinson, a very nice lady). There's a lot of money backing her for handling fees, transportation and advertising that your average breeder-owner-handler can never hope to come up with. To be one of the top dogs of all breeds in the country costs, literally, hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So there's quite a bit of marketing going on. It's like a good product selling a lot while a better one with less exposure sells much less. Our big dumb Dan is a fabulous dog, built like a brick outhouse with both doors open, and Her Majesty does her usual magic on him but he loses to a professionally-handled dog that can't get his head above his shoulders while gaiting because of structural faults. Maybe that's what I resent, the edge the professional has over even the best amateur.

Sorry to rant. It gets me peeved.

134 Further thinking about the Obama portrait.

The shock value (Real importance. My words are weak here, cause having a black president was a big deal. Too bad he was a commie.) of having 40 something white guy presidents and then the first black on is somewhat diminished by the fact that the painting is deflecting from the importance of TFBP. He couldn't just stand there an look like a president, it had to be about "Him". Sort of makes the office look small. It's just weird, like he wanted to be President of a different country. So yeah the portrait is just another Marxist nut kick at regular Americans.

Should have just done another halo picture. Crown of thorns, crown of flowers, same diff. He even looks bored.

208 It's very telling how he's portrayed like some pagan nature god

The pagan demigod Pan liked to terrify travelers passing through his woods. Pan would hide in the foliage and rustle the leaves as the unsuspecting traveler passed by.

Each rustle would scare the traveler a bit more, and Pan would continue in this manner until the poor soul was in a blind "panic".

This is the origin of the word "panic", from nature demigod Pan's tricks.

The parallel to Obama is delicious.

245 Gorgeous Monet.

Now, about the Obama's... you have to admire their brass. They have put a stake in the ground, declaring that their administration wasn't a Political statement, but rather a Social Statement.

Obama was never interested in Executing the Constitution. He was neither qualified nor interested in being Chief Executive. In the same way that rookies think that being a manager is as simple as "telling people what to do, and then they do it," Obama viewed President as King.

And acted as such.

However, this was never his goal. It was an unpleasant aspect of the real job, which was being Historic. That's all that he ever wanted, the title "First."

Not "best." Not "good." Not "effective." Just "Social Justice Leader."

BTW, Hillary would have done the *exact* same thing. She no more wants to actually be President than you do. She wants to be First.

The Presidency has become a social totem to these lunatics.

In a world where the Kardashians and the Hiltons and so many others are famous just for being famous, this approach works. A frightening number of Americans are voting purely on Social Totem Visuals.

to erase the wisdom of our Forefathers, you must erase the History that made them...

Technology has led to a new paradigm. In Technology everything becomes obsolete in about 5 years... and thus the knowledge from 10 years ago becomes worthless...

Heck... did you know that Technology College Credits, from 10 years ago, can no longer be applied to a new degree??? Even things like basic electronics???

Problem is, that they moved that Philosophy over to ALL of education...

That's really the only way he could have got Arsenio Hall's hands.

Yep. For eight years we had to hear about M's beautifully tone arms and shoulders. She just looks puffy and soft in that portrait. Should have executed the artist. Has anyone seen him lately? Nothing that is definitionally M is remotely on par with the real world M. And since no one has seen the dress in real life we can't be sure about that.

Borrowing is a vital part of economics. It is also known as investment. I builds a relationship between the borrower and the lender. The lender is then beholden to the borrower and the borrower needs the lender for future economic growth.

In world economics, that is a defense mechanism.

Yousuf Karsh's photographic portrait of Churchill is a classic. Karsh wasn't getting what he wanted in the sitting. Churchill wasn't pleased with sitting and wanted Karsh to go away and pretend that the whole thing never happened.

So Karsh walked up and yanked the cigar out of Churchill's mouth. Churchill gave him a "what the fuck, how dare you" look and the rest is history.

366 @317 "..."So Karsh walked up and yanked the cigar out of Churchill's mouth..."

In William Manchester's biography of Churchill he comments on that episode. That famous portrait of him that most folks regard as displaying Churchill's tough, bulldog, English resoluteness is actually the irritated reaction of a smoker being deprived of his pacifier.

368 A few years ago there was a documentary about the various ways that
Switzerland has terraformed its surroundings to more or less wall off
the country if need be. It was fascinating.

Surrounding the country with dykes?

372 I never cease to be amazed by the shamelessness of people like Warner. He just got caught red handed trying to work with a Russian agent to get dirt on Trump and here he is today blathering on about how much danger Russia poses to the US.

He will have more flexibility after his next election.

375 If we all need to be extra cognizant of violence towards women, how does one excuse rewarding an individual who wants to normalize depicting the bizarre and heinous beheading of women? If he was copying art, then the victim should have been a man. What was the basis of using a woman? (And, I don't like it either way, but since the left is going there w domestic violence, let them own it.)

He gets away with it because no one on the GOPe will call him out on it.
How refreshing would it be if someone told him he should STFU.
Or better yet laugh and point at him.

377 OT

If an attorney did not redact identifying info on a document in a closed federal case, who is responsible/getting sanctioned?

The court or the attorney that filed the document?

The case is closed, I was doing research on someone and I found personal info in a case file and I was wondering if I should warn opposing counsel as she works for the county.
We taxpayers will pay for any fine or lawsuit.

378 Why is it that black Americans in particular want to falsely imply non-black historical figures were black, and yet they will completely ignore the many historical African figures who WERE black?

Kings and emperors of Ghana, Mali, Axum, kwaZulu, whatever.

379 About the Churchill portrait: Yes, it was burned. Accounts differ as to whether it was Winston who lit the match, or his wife Clementine. To judge from photos, it was no great loss.

There's also the story of the murals by Diego Rivera being ripped out of Rockefeller Center and dumped into the East River. I can only marvel at the stupidity of hiring Rivera in the first place to decorate a temple of capitalism.

As for the Obama portraits: I like them. They are *revealing*.

The one of Michelle (to the extent that it looks like her) reminds me of the society portraits of John Singer Sargent: not in the quality of the work (Amy Sherald is not fit to clean Sargent's brushes), but in its spirit: the emphasis on clothing over form, which signals social position; and the vacant, haughty expression, the narrowed eyes, the mouth curling in a sneer - she seems to be saying "Let them eat cake". Whether she intended it or not, Sherald's portrait pillories Obama. The fact that she *likes* her portrait says much about her.

As for Wiley's portait of Barack Obama: its sheer weirdness reflects the subject. Theleft hand with what appears to six digits; the pose, floating in space against a background of climbing flowers (perhaps some 'rons or 'rettes from the gardening thread can identify them), as if he were a force of Nature; the lack any symbols of office, not even a necktie, that might define - and therefore limit - his authority; the pose of leaning forward in the chair, staring at the viewer, with eyes that follow you around the room, as if he were a teacher displeased by your recitation or a judge about to pass sentence: Yes, that's BHO, all right. Again, whether he intended it or not, Wiley has pilloried his subject.

So, yes, I like the portraits. They speak volumes about the persons they portray. They are worthy of them.

They've been identified in the news. Supposedly represent his life story by being flowers from the US, Hawaii (I know what I did right there) and Kenya. Oddly, there are no Indonesian flowers.
