Rebecca, youve worked many years with refugees and immigrants, what influenced the change of your views? Looking back through the years of repetitive experiences and myself in my work environment as a volunteer, I had to admit to myself that when it comes to Muslim refugees, they have grown up with completely different values, into which they have been brainwashed and are indoctrinated by Islam, and have no intention of adopting our values worse, they look at us, unbelievers with superiority and arrogance. Now, if it has been St John Vianney who was the priest (but that's not the church he was at and he died in the 1840's) he wouldn't have any time to tell people to "get off the lawn", because at the end of his life so many people came to see him that he was spending about 18 hours hearing confessions. After that that he was probably too tired to talk to anyone.

There was an impressionist exhibit here in Houston a few years back. Most of it was absolute crap. Then I walked past a Van Gogh and it stopped me in my tracks. Pictures of the painting never did that, but seeing the real McCoy was a whole new dimension. I must have stared at that painting for 20 minutes. To this day I still do not understand how a very detailed photograph misses everything that screams in the original.

I love Van Gogh, mainly because of his use of color, but I would never hang one of his pieces in my home. I look at this one, for instance, and my first thought is "mental illness." I don't know enough about him to know if he was ill or not - but this seriously looks like 4th floor art therapy, but with better technique. I wouldn't be able to view it long term.

So a little anectode somewhat related to the Rob Porter story
I'm an executive member of a small non profit and it was time to name our Man of the Year and tradition had it that we nominated the past president for the award. Well another executive on the board is in court for a parking ticket and sees the honoree in court with a lawyer on a matter seemingly related to a restraining order. Short of asking the honoree directly what was the nature of the case, we asked the county clerk under FOIA the nature of any charges against the honoree. They acknowledged that there was a case open of some nature, but said they could not disclose any details of the case. All we had was local gossip of people telling us they could not support our organization if we were going to give the award to an abuser. We as a board ended up voting to rescind the award. I abstained from the vote feeling I had zero evidence of what this guy was accused of aside from gossip and rumor. So as I hear of the Portman case, I wonder if the FBI and Kelly had more info on him than my anecdotal story ? I cant blame them for their inaction if they also were given no evidence by the court system. I was out running through the village of Auvers-Sur-Oise a couple years ago. The church is right across the river and there is a little country road that leaves the village and climbs up a little hill through some woods from the church. I decided to run up the hill. The road gets to the top of the river bluff and opens up in to some large beautiful fields. Off in the distance is a walled cemetery. I ran through the fields and could resist entering the cemetery. There, in the midst of those beautiful fields under a brilliant blue French sky, was the grave of Vincent Van Gogh. He has the piece that apparently eluded him for much of his life.

An initial probe into the downing of an Israeli F-16i jet on Saturday found that the altitude at which the plane was flying made it more vulnerable than the other eight planes flying in the formation.
According to a report by Yediot Aharonot, the plane was flying at a height of 10,000 feet when the Syrian anti-aircraft missile exploded near the plane. Shrapnel penetrated the cockpit and caused serious injury to the pilot, who nonetheless initiated the evacuation procedure with his navigator almost immediately. The jet was part of a two four-plane formation that was taking part in retaliatory airstrikes following the infiltration of an advanced Iranian drone into Israeli airspace early Saturday morning. During the operation, around 20 Syrian anti-aircraft missiles were fired at the Israeli jets and one locked onto a second plane in the formation. Unlike the first jet which was hit, the second plane was able to evade the missile. Posted by: Nevergiveup at February 12, 2018 10:41 AM (5y11N) 268

Posted by: McCool at February 12, 2018 10:28 AM (WXSv6) Somewhere over the weekend I heard either a former CIA member or another law enforcement type discussing the actual process and problems with getting a security clearance. He said that he believes that the reason almost half of the Trump WH staffers have only interim security clearances is because they were not involved in Gov. before their current assignments. Getting a full security clearances is a long process that he said sometimes takes two years for a civilian. It's easier, faster and half done already if the person had been working in gov. or as a gov. contractor , etc. for years in DC prior to their current assignment. In Porter's case, he had a restraining order from one ex prior to the divorce, but no actual charges or convictions. He said , she said. The FBI may have been inclined to not give him a full security clearance, or they may have still be deciding, particularly because Porter has a long history with stellar references from those inside government regarding his job performance. He worked as a legislative aid to Rob Portman, Mike Lee and then Orrin Hatch, including as Hatch's Deputy Chief of Staff. His first wife is claiming that the black eye she was sporting from their honeymoon was because Porter punched her. I'm having a hard time believing that she had a black eye , with zero redness or problems with the eye itself, had zero cuts, etc. from a punch. Something is not adding up. Porter won't say what happened, other than it was not what first wife says happened. So, ok, what is your version, Rob? Posted by: Jen the original at February 12, 2018 11:02 AM (7Jr56) 360

Allow me to 'splain arts and portraits and shit. Both are like, modern portraits, which means that the fact that they are about something other than the person is more important a reflection on the person they are about than the degree to which they resemble the person that they are about. The trick is to put oneself in the place of an observer of the artist to experience the signalling process that the artist is undertaking through the mode of portraiture, and juxtapose that, internally, with the parallel experience of the internal historiography/narrative of the subject. Got that? OK. So its onanistic wankery nobody should give a fuck about. Posted by: Alcoholic Asshole Shut In at February 12, 2018 11:19 AM (CPk08) 450

The color combinations and placement on Barry's just look off to me. They detract rather than add. More of a distraction than anything else.

One might also note the elongated fingers in the official portrait, a subtle artistic jape at the reportedly short fingers of the current President.

They are signaling that the artists are talentless hacks (or disdain displaying any actual talent) but are willing to cash the checks from the chumps who swallow the bilge the arts community puts out. Allow me to 'splain arts and portraits and shit. Both are like, modern
portraits, which means that the fact that they are about something other than the person is more important a reflection on the person they are about than the degree to which they resemble the person that they are about. The trick is to put oneself in the place of an observer of the artist to experience the signalling process that the artist is undertaking through the mode of portraiture, and juxtapose that, internally, with the parallel experience of the internal historiography/narrative of the subject. ===== Admit it, AASI, you used the Postmodern Generator for that. world-us-canada-43036228 Mr Wiley painted Mr Obama in bright colours sitting in a garden, while Ms Sherald depicted the former first lady in muted tones against a plain background. "The ability to be the first African-American painter to paint the first African-American president of the United States was absolutely overwhelming," said an emotional Mr Wiley. Just went to Romare Bearden foundation website. His early oil paintings are so much better than the works toward the end of his life, some of which are hideous.
So I take this opportunity to amend prior remarks. The obama portraits: I don't think they're terrible as stand alone art pieces. Maybe they're not presidential, but was that the intent? Are they supposed to hang in the WH? Michelle's face was idealized, definitely. Portraitists have been "touching up" their subjects for quite some time. I don't know what the painter's thought process was to place him against a wall of flowers but I actually like the overall effect. Again, this is me objectively viewing the works, not taking into account political considerations. Posted by: kallisto at February 12, 2018 12:59 PM (Iz8Py) 501

So I take this opportunity to amend prior remarks. I'm glad you said this. I like Bearden's early works, and even some of his later ones. There's a good, clear voice in some of them that I admire. The obama portraits: I don't think they're terrible as stand alone art pieces. Maybe they're not presidential, but was that the intent? Are they supposed to hang in the WH? Michelle's face was idealized, definitely. Portraitists have been "touching up" their subjects for quite some time. It's more or less a portrait of a dress. Which is fine. And forgettable, but at least unobjectionable at that level. I don't know what the painter's thought process was to place him against a wall of flowers but I actually like the overall effect. Again, this is me objectively viewing the works, not taking into account political considerations. Posted by: kallisto at February 12, 2018 12:59 PM (Iz8Py) That stuff leaves me cold.
