The first thing that stands out is that the office space does not feel like a government building at all. It could be an upscale hotel, a college campus or a corporate headquarters. "There was interest to move this above a Class C Building," said a CFPB source familiar with the renovation and the operation of the building. "Now it's a Class A building," he told TheDCNF. It was only on very rare occasions that one saw inside the dwelling-places of the Inner Party, or even penetrated into the quarter of the town where they lived. The whole atmosphere of the huge block of flats, the richness and spaciousness of everything, the unfamiliar smells of good food and good tobacco, the silent and incredibly rapid lifts sliding up and down, the white-jacketed servants hurrying to and fro -- everything was intimidating.
The passage down which I was led was softly carpeted, with cream-papered walls and white wainscoting, all exquisitely clean. That too was intimidating. I could not remember ever to have seen a passageway whose walls were not grimy from the contact of human bodies. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at February 08, 2018 08:11 PM (EoRCO) 43

My hometown built a new police station about 10 years back. As one of two guys doing the underground inspections, e.g. storm sewers, sanitary sewers, water mains, etc our reports were filled with instances of blatant disregard for local and or state standards. After 3 months a local authority told us our services were no longer needed for this project and we weren't expected to be seen on the site again. Have a nice day. Luckily the finished project was only double the initial estimate.

I would not call the furnishing of the office opulent assuming the furniture is not some expensive "designer" models. It looks like a standard office. The open space (lobby, etc.) is a standard modern office design. The high cost per square foot is probably due to the location view from the outdoor deck (with, oh my gods, an umbrella! The horror!). It should have been located somewhere north of the convention center or across the Anacostia. Or perhaps the corner of a GSA warehouse somewhere.

I work in a 50 year old lab building that's falling apart and is no longer adequate to the work, much less an appealing place to be. It's a dump, in the dumpiest part of DC. After 35 years, though, I got an office with a window, so I can see the monuments and the nice side of town 5 miles away. Perhaps the CPFB folks could move in with us. After all, they're all in it for the little guy. Posted by: pep at February 08, 2018 08:47 PM (LAe3v) Fifty years old? Hell, that's barely broken in. In Europe - at a premier university, no less - I worked in a building a LOT older than that, that was next to a major road and had no AC, so the lab was filthy with dirt every day, had no deionized water, had a roof that leaked like a sieve, had lecture theaters that looked like morgues, that effectively wasn't heated in the winter (it was common to have to thaw out bottles of DMSO), etc. You get the picture. It would have been an embarrassment to a Third World country. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara You had a roof? Luxury! Posted by: pep at February 08, 2018 09:07 PM (LAe3v) 295

sacrifices of the men and women who died and lost limbs, seem like a damned waste of time. I spent a lot of time in the V.A. here in 2011 due to a heart attack and saw a lot of permanently injured kids from Iraq. Every one I met, proud of their service despite what happened to them. I'm a people too. Nobody is more fed with this bullshit than I am, in that area I take a backseat to no one. But at some point people have to start recognizing the sheer enormity of what is happening here. We are talking about a conspiracy that goes all the way up to the last president and includes everyone up to what 90% of the public thought was the last president. The media is going to fight this to the death because they not only supported them they ARE them. So anything that comes out has to be perfect. Beyond perfect. This is all actually pretty fucking fast. It has only been a year and it is all coming to a head. It will be worth the wait. Posted by: JackStraw at February 08, 2018 09:56 PM (/tuJf) 488

Trump should order his new CFPB director to take a page out of Mark Cuban's book: Rent the cheapest warehouse you can find, fit it out as cheaply as possible to serve as an office, and move the entire Un-Constitutional mess into it.
Then, sell this opulent building they put up and try to recover some "consumers" money. Posted by: Aarradin at February 09, 2018 04:21 AM (5kvQv) 510
The DC is taking the wrong angle. That's NOT opulent. It's barely Class A space. As someone who's spent the last 18 years negotiating construction contracts, I can tell you that if someone paid $409/sqft for THAT, then someone was being robbed blind.
