Because I missed the last thread; this is what the article about the Washington Post's argument for open borders said:
Instead of grappling with Trump's proposed reform of the federal growth-by-immigration economic strategy, the Washington Post's article simply assumed that a smaller population ensures a smaller economy. It declared: By reducing the country's overall population, the plan could eventually reduce the overall growth rate of the U.S. economy. Under Trump's plan, the U.S. economy could be more than $1 trillion smaller than it would have been two decades from now. That's largely because the economy would have fewer workers. I had an argument with a backer of mass third-world immigration; my point being that low-skilled jobs were being lost to automation. Why did we need unskilled third-world laborers. He said we needed them to "support an aging population." I pointed out that Japan was coping just fine with an aging population through robotics. He said that would destroy their economy since "robots don't buy anything." I pointed out that in a global economy, you don't need your customers to live in your country. He said that population decline doomed Japan. And this is where I played Trump card. OK, I said, Japan's population is slated to decrease 10%-20% by 2050. In that same period, Nigeria's population will double. In 2050, would you rather be a Japanese or a Nigerian. Never got an answer. Symbolism is fascinating. The Four Creatures have a loooooong history in Mesopotamian art. See, for example, Lamassu, composite creatures that guarded the palace throne room.
https://tinyurl.com/y9dfu7fu They represent the four realms of Creation and the four kinds of living creatures (fish and sea creatures didn't count). God then borrows these familiar images and uses them to say that He is the true Master of all Creation. Fascinating. Posted by: Kris at February 07, 2018 09:36 AM (nwqNw) 55

"By reducing the country's overall population, the plan could eventually reduce the overall growth rate of the U.S. economy."
Right here is where that whole argument goes wrong. NO ONE is talking about "reducing" the country's overall population. We are talking about lowering the rate of growth to a slighly more sustainable number than what it is right now. p.s. wouldn't brink up Japan when discussing this, they truly are seriously screwed because of their demographics, but their issues are way way different than ours. "Why did we need unskilled third-world laborers. He
said we needed them to "support an aging population." Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo' That is delusional thinking on multiple levels, as most here know, and just about floors me every time I hear it. 1. Most of those workers will be a net drain on the treasury. 2. If they are actually taxed heavily to pay for an aging white population that will vote in politicians that will put an end to that one way or another. They are not going to be happy about being expected to support people they have been taught are racist oppressors. And since they will be either a majority or a very large minority there will be plenty of candidate eager to accommodate them. They are to be the beneficiaries of the welfare system, not financiers. While this is a depiction of an Old Testament scene, it's interesting to remember that a Christian is painting this. That Vision has a lot going on, with many different things that could be included. As someone said above, where's the wheel and the many-eyed angels. God doesn't even take human form there. Instead, Raphael specifically includes the symbols of the Four Gospels. Yes, they appear in the Vision, but Christians would adopt these later. They're even in order, I believe, counterclockwise. It shows, to me, a continuity between the two parts of the Bible and God's dominion over all.

The Four Faces are taken from Ezekiel 1:5, and were later applied to the 4 Evanglists, possibly by the illustrators of medieval manuscripts such as the monks in Lindisfarne: Ezekiel 1:5 "Within it there were figures resembling four living beings, and this was their appearance, they had human form." 1:10 "as for the form of their faces, each had the face of a man, all four had the face of a lion on the right, and the face of a bull on the left, and all four had the face of an eagle." . . .Because that has never been done to a past President in this Country and I doubt Trump wants that to become the norm. Lest everyone forget our history, what is occurring today is relatively mild in comparison to what has occurred in the past between political rivals. We have had duels, completely fabricated journalistic exposes accusing Candidates of murder and infidelity on a regular basis without the benefit of any facts and more done by and on sitting Presidents and Candidates. The FBI has always been a tool of the left and this is not the first time they engaged in shenanigans at the request of a sitting President. JFK had them very busy spying on rivals and other Americans during his brief tenure. Posted by: The Great White Scotsman at February 07, 2018 09:49 AM (+Dllb) 109

The Saga Continues, or Incompetence and Incontinence.
In a cavern complex in New York, a meeting is held. "Alright people, settle down. We have a long agenda to get through and I am sure you all want to get busy on your action items," Huma says. "Let's get started with our pledge to Hillary." She rises and turns to face the wearer of the purple plaid plutonium powered panzer pantsuit, but no one else does. "What is this?" Hillary hisses. "Are you in rebellion?" "We need someone new, with new ideas," Bernie states. "Someone who can strike at multiple identity groups," Elizabeth Warren adds. "Someone who hasn't struck-out twice," John McCain states, drooling, his forehead pulsing. "Wait - why are you here? You're a Republican, and shouldn't you be at home with your family in these last days?" Huma asks. "It was their idea I come here," he slobbers. "FOOLS!" Hillary bellows, the cavern shaking. "I will take what is mine, and if you dare challenge me, see what fate you risk!" A dark bloody mass is dropped on the floor. "Is that-" warren starts to ask. "YES! The wig of Oprah the Winfrey! Ripped from her body by me! I SHALL NOT BE DENIED!" All present quickly bow to Hillary. "Your will be done O Inevitable One!" "Now to business. The memo has come out..." "A nothingburger, your cankleness," Billy Kristol says. "It is actually full of lies, lies, and really nothing." "That 'nothingburger' confirmed what we have been doing. Our entire plans to overthrow Bush and install McGovern will be exposed," Nancy Pelosi says in a cackling whisper. "It was to overthrow Trump and install me," Hillary chides. "Why would I want to install Trump? Have you seen the pretty ring I got from Lord Sorosaun? Pretty, pretty ring." Hillary holds her hands on the table and glares as the purple glow builds around her to blinding intensity before fading to a faint aura. "Enough with this nonsense! Here are your tasks. Warren, Sanders - get back to the Senate and hold up anything involving immigration, keep calling the GOP racists for not doing anything and turn down flat everything they propose as being racist. Fail me and," she gestures at the wig, "your fate will cause Hell itself to shudder." The two bolt away in fear. "Billy - will you put down that fidget spinner! Keep the NeverTrump fires burning. No matter what conservative thing Trump does put him down for being ideologically incorrect - and get Egg McMuffin and Mayor McCheese on the talk shows. They're a little less repulsive than you are." Billy skips away as Hillary shakes her head. "Now the FBI people - McCabe, Ohr, Strozk, and Page." "You have tasking for us?" the quivering, cringing group asks. "One that is perfect for you," Hillary says. "Is it digging up dirt?" they asks. "You read my mind," she coos as Huma hands out shovels. "Wait - why shovels? What are we digging?" "Follow these nice large men, they'll show you everything. Make sure it's done right, Yuri." "Da, tovarisch," one states before pushing the FBI people out of the cavern. "Huma - have you gotten hold of Barry yet?" "His phone just goes to voicemail." *Barry dances a hula on a tropical beach, his grass skirt swaying about as his phone beeps once* "I see I will have to get his attention some other way. I see the need for a second dossier to drop, one that names a certain name." "Names? Tonawanda?" Nancy asks. Hillary turns about. "What's she still doing here?" Huma grabs Nancy and leads her out. "Come on dear, time to go to the SOTU speech." "Pudding? I like pudding." Hillary stalks away from the meeting room, turning out the lights. "I like pudding, too." John McCain says. What a difference from the Saint Catherine painting. That was quiet and contemplative using, for Raphael, muted colors. Today's painting bespeaks power and majesty completely beyond any ambition of mankind. The colors are brilliant, the figures are lively and the images of pegasus, the griffin and a giant eagle (hello Prof. Tolkien) under God's power show His omnipotence. This painting must have been very impressive to Raphael's customer and audience. I wonder if the Old Testament connection adds to it's effectiveness for the viewer.
I find the faces of some of Raphael's portraits to be rather stiff and unemotional. Not this one. Like the Saint Catherine work, the figures show just what the artist wants to convey. Posted by: JTB at February 07, 2018 09:52 AM (V+03K) 124

Posted by: andycanuck at February 07, 2018 09:40 AM (ewxPW) Right, but the four creatures appear first in the Old Testament, long before the Gospels were written. This Vision is a least 400 years before Christ. Those creatures became representations of the Gospels even later, but they originally represented the categories of living things. Christians borrowed them for the Gospels, cuz why not? Again sea creatures didn't count. They aren't just a Jewish invention either, they are universally Mesopotamian and even the Egyptians used them. Actually, they appear, in one form or another throughout the Eastern Hemisphere. Posted by: Rick in SK at February 07, 2018 09:27 AM (FZYNt) ======== Bing "omphalos hypothesis". Basically some apologists think that certain features of the universe were created in such a way that would allow for differing interpretations as to how they came about. So Adam could have been made with a belly button, even if no point of his creation involved him being attached to the umbilical cord. Likewise, the universe may only be a few thousand years old, yet at the instant of creation, light beams striking the earth were created *in place* as if they had emanated from stars located millions of lightyears away. Seems a bit like special pleading to me, but it could explain the painting. Alternately, angels might consider it "proper form" to appear anthropomorphically to people. See Genesis 19. Everyone thought they were human. Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at February 07, 2018 10:01 AM (/qEW2) 171

Can we go back to discussing the wall again, just for a moment.
The argument against the wall seems to be that it will not be 100% effective. So, therefore it is in essence a failure. Yet, the latest statistics on seatbelts places their effectiveness as around 50% in preventing vehicular deaths. And based on a 50% effectiveness of this product, we passed federal safety standards requiring them on all vehicles sold in America. Seems like two different standards are being used for two different products. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 07, 2018 10:02 AM (EyPfd) 178

I want to rewrite something I said above...
I said that the four creatures weren't just a "Jewish invention". What I meant to say is that God didn't just make them up out of wholecloth for the Bible for the purpose of prophecy or allegory. God borrowed already recognized and familiar imagery for His purposes. I actually do believe in the Judeo-Christian God and I do believe the Bible was God-breathed and given to men to record. The way I wrote it sounded... bad. Sorry if I offended anyone. It was very poorly written. One of my favorite passages of the Bible, concerning wings. It's just so beautiful:
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary, They will walk and not be faint. - Isaiah 40:28-31 Posted by: grammie winger - only almost a week - at February 07, 2018 10:14 AM (lwiT4) 252

Jeez, I'm depressed.
My beloved nephew, who once was a (relatively) conservative millennial suffers badly from TDS. We have gotten along fine since the election because we have avoided politics. But this morning for some reason, he fired off about 20 texts to me bashing Trump. It was like Rachel Maddow was texting me. He said "I won't remain silent any more!" If an online troll said that, I would respond with snark about how the left can't shut up, but I contented myself with observing that he works for a company which has given out bonuses due to the tax cut and if he doesn't want it, he can always send it to the IRS. That resulted in 5 more hysterical texts. His mom - my sis - is a bit more centrist than I am and hates Trump's tweets but she voted for him. She really liked the SOTU address and I wonder if she said something to him that set him off. Or I wonder if cognitive dissonance is setting in because Trump has had a good first year and my nephew has to fight to hang on to his opinion that Trump is Satan and Hitler and Genghis Khan rolled into one. Years ago when I was playing in an alternative-rock band, one day we were goofing off during a break in rehersals and I bet our drummer I could make a credible death metal song using lyrics from the Book of Ezekiel.
I used Ezekiel ch. 30, with a chorus of "All of them slain-fallen by the sword" and wrote it on the spot. The guys in the band all agreed, it was a pretty good song. Too bad we weren't a death metal band so I never found any use for it. Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at February 07, 2018 10:24 AM (juCZM) 300

We had them in both CT and KY when we lived there. People would drive up and tell them how many workers they needed that day and they would pile into the back of the truck. Ezekiel laid out "The Watchman's Duty" to warn others if you see trouble coming. If you don't then their blood is on your hands, of you do and they ignore you then it's their fault (paraphrasing of course). Being a Watchman is one of the 6 blessings (talents) God graces some with.
I have much respect for the Prophets. They gave up worldly wealth and pleasures to fullfil a higher calling from God. They were outcasts and mocked and treated badly. I think a lot (all?) of the TDS victims have been comforting themselves with the fantasy of "Oh, Mueller will indict him, he'll be gone, and everyone will see how correct we have been and will have to beg our forgiveness." It's not just political, it's their entire worldview of their own Smartness is tied up in this belief.
And suddenly things are coming out, and they starting to suspect that maybe things aren't going to work out like they think. They're like the crew in the broadcasting box when Brady had the ball stripped that last time - "uh oh, only 30 seconds left, aren't we about out of time for Brady to win this thing???" And the fears are rising, and their anger is rising, and they lash out as their worldview fails. Because I think everyone has started to feel it failing, no matter what the politcal beliefs are. --- A lot of what one needs to know is how they project. Blacks will be shot on sight, homosexuals are constantly being beaten up, etc. They know that's what they would do to you if they had the power, so they assume that's how flyover country must treat people. So, are we talkin' full on military parade with hardware and stuff rollin' through the streets or just a bunch of veterans marching? I would hope someone at the Pentagon would say we're kind of busy, you know, fighting wars and stuff, to have a parade. But since the only outlets I've seen reporting it are the usual suspects, and all of the freakout is from the usual parties, I'm just ignoring the outrage. My uncle can't seem to help himself from freaking out. Oh, and my father-in-law posted this this morning:

>>So you think that they knew (how?) their texts were being collected in June. But the OIG didn't present them to Mueller until July?
Because they work for the FBI and they would have heard that information on them was being requested by the OIG. These were careless people obviously. They spent years texting each other about their conspiracy on government phones knowing they were subject to government oversight. So why did they do it? Because the culture inside the FBI had become so corrupt that they knew they could get away with it, particularly if Hillary was elected. Trump was a wildcard. He was an outsider who didn't care about tearing down holy institutions. In fact, he pledged during entire campaign to do it. Yea, I think it finally dawned on them during the summer of 2017 that things had changed and this was a real investigation with real consequences unlike the ones they were used to running like the Hillary email whitewash. This was being done by an outside body who had had his powers restored late in 2016 by Chuck Grassley and he was going to get the information. Ezekiel made some crazy prophecies. There is one especially, Medieval Theologians used to use it as an example of why you could never literally believe all prophecies, because some (like this one) were so wacky that everyone knew they could never come true.
Ezekiel is taken (in the spirit) to where he stands overlooking a field full of bones, stretching as far as he can see. Everything he sees is died, and they are dry, meaning they have been dead a long time, and they are in the grave. 37:11 "Then he said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say "Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone, we are cut off." Therefore prophesy and say to them, This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have spoken, and I have done it" declares the Lord. That whole thing was clearly just nuts. How could that ever happen? Revis defeated GOP candidate David C. Linton in the special election to replace Rep. John McCaherty, who left the office to focus on his run for Jefferson County executive. So, yeah, getting soundly beaten in the EC by someone you though would be a pushover (and don't think the activist left didn't have the same opinion) is enough to drive even the most level headed of activists insane. The New Yorkers were a harder sell, but Obama managed to show them the light. Although, I do miss mocking the hell out of them.
However, they don't remember telling me that I had to like Hillary (as a senator) because "women." I remember it, since I brayed. Posted by: dagny at February 07, 2018 11:11 AM (16bxt) 523

"I simply don't want to discuss it with him anymore and I'll tell him that."
Actually what I do with millenials especially, but it works with just about any dem supporters with a populist streak, is that I NEVER express any support for Trump. But instead I shift and say "yeah he's bad, and look how for years the government has been screwing you! " and if they're young, you can always win by telling them how social security is a scam to take all their money away and give it to old people, and how disability benefits are all for the ghetto rats who never have to work like they do, and then go into all the ways that the gov over the last few years have been screwing them and guaranteeing that they will have nothing. Just aim at making them hate the government completely, and then start in on no matter how they vote, the whole thing is pointless and they can never win and their voting will never make a difference to anything at all. Pissed off angry people just eat that shit up, it's amazing how far you can go feeding it to them. Things like how the Clive Bundy prosecutors were caught faking evidence it always a good one to throw in "they could do this to you too!!!" And I figure that even though I know I can never change their minds about Trump, if I can just get them to take themselves out of the game completely that's as good as a win. They're already haters, so it's easy to redirect the hate a little bit. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 07, 2018 11:13 AM (V2Yro) 533

It's funny when you read demented trolls online - people you don't know and are glad you never will. It's less funny when someone you love is ranting like that. It's like he simply can't accept that his mother, his aunt and his (now deceased) stepfather voted for Trump. It's unfathomable to him and he thinks he can bully us into seeing things his way. I told him, "nope, you can't."
---------- When dealing with younger people, I prod them to recognize that the getting of wisdom and judgement is a process of age and experience. There are no shortcuts. I generally start by asking them if they believe that they, by virtue of age and experience, have more understanding and knowledge than some specific person, a younger sibling, relative, etc. They will *have* to acknowledge this, or the discussion is pointless. Once they have, then ask them why that is. Again, they must surely acknowledge that it is a consequence of their own age and experience. At this point they will become wary, as they sense that they are being painted into a logical corner, with no rational avenue of escape. About now, I ask if they would, on the basis of the discussion so far, agree that ignorance is necessarily organic to youth. They won't like that, but you can ask if that *fact* hasn't already been established. I also point out that it isn't a failing, it's just normal, but having the knowledge that it is simply true, they ought to be very circumspect regarding their own 'wisdom' and their self-assurance of it, because, after all, they are lacking both age and experience. The Smurfs had a "Night of the Living Dead" cartoon about a Purple Smurf epidemic. Despite possessing a cure, the purples were more effective at spreading the disease than unaffected smurfs were at curing it. At one point they were all purple, and only an improbable accident at the end rescued them from being extinguished forever. I kind of feel like we're in that episode.

If angels are not born and do not reproduce, why do they have a belly button and nipples? Angels are non-corporeal, pure spirit. How do you represent pure spirit in art? I assume that you depict your idea of pure innocense. I have no idea how that got started. Worth some research. Maybe has something to do with the heirarchy of angels? angels, archangels, principalities, powers, virtues dominions, thrones, cherubim, and seraphim. Cherubim, traditionally protected the garden of eden and so would be associated with innocense, hence the "child" symbolism. Posted by: dagny at February 07, 2018 11:18 AM (16bxt) 552

While I don't believe we should panic, it's not wise to simply ignore and rationalize away the results of a special election.
The cardinal sin of conservatives tends to be complacency. In the '80's and '90s, a lot of conservatives (like PJ O'Rourke) told us that those silly PC people on campus would be forgotten as soon as grads got out into the real world and made money. Instead the problem got worse. We tend to think rational people will see Trump's good results and that will be enough. Well, you'd think people would have looked at the results of socialism and realized it doesn't work, but that doesn't seem to be the case now, does it? The Dems understand and harass the power of emotion. Conservatives think people will use common sense and rationality. I remind you: Obama got elected twice. Posted by: Donna and V.
