Revealed: The Criminal Referral for Christopher Steele

I believe the existence of this criminal referral made the news (barely) on January 4th, but now you can read the heavily-redacted criminal referral itself.

Steele is being referred to the prosecutorial arms of the government for a possible violation of 18 USC 1001, which makes it criminal to lie or to mislead or conceal by trickery any material fact to a federal tribunal or inquiry. There are so many redactions I can't quite make out what he's being accused of misleading the FBI about, but it seems to be either:

1, the timing of when he told the FBI he gave briefings to the media, that is, he claimed these briefings occurred at the end of October 2016 but in fact he has now admitted some occurred in the summer/early fall of 2016,

and/or

2, that he remained in close contact with Clinton associates [Redacted] and maybe also [Redacted], who were feeding him "intelligence" which he in turn passed off, maybe, as his own intel. Those redacted names would belong to, most likely, non-intelligence-officers/longtime Hillary "fixers" and smear merchants Sidney Blumenthal and Cody Shearer.

A possibility occurs to me: What if Steele is just the Front Man hired to put a presentable face on the detestable, dishonest mercenaries Blumenthal and Shearer? What if most of the crap in the "Steele Dossier" in fact originated with this repellent pair, with "widely-respected British spy" Christopher Steele hired just to do a very low level of checking on the claims and then slap his own much-more-credible name on the shoddy "research"?

What if Steele's involvement was mostly limited to telephoning wannabe-007 Sidney Blumenthal's dodgy contacts and talking with them for a bit?

What if Steele is really just a cut-out?

You know -- Dezinformazioniya. Maskarova. Plus various other Russian espionage terms gleaned from Le Carre.

Open thread. Jeeze Lousie, I'm dead tired.

Why does Carter Page keep showing up and who the hell is he anyway?

It's all laid out there. CP was their boy all along. He was the "insurance policy".

however, they could not take a stand, and should not be expected to take a stand, despite the oaths they had taken to uphold the law and so on, because they needed their jobs, had mortgages, and were concerned with protecting their pensions. you know, they were concerned with that wrongdoing they were witnessing or complicit in within reason.

so, now that Trump has won, that the swamp is being drained, that evidence of the deep state treachery is being revealed, where is the loyal, honorable, rank and file core? why are they not out there blowing their whistles and pointing the way to the evidence to prosecute the treacherous deep state agents?

"Cut-out" passes document to another agent for delivery.

When we went through a government shutdown under Obama, the Park Service police were harassing people. It was....eye opening and sad. I still have hope there are good people somewhere to be found in government service. Just an old fools dream these days, it seems.

Posted by: jsg at February 05, 2018 07:50 PM (khbK2)

69 But it is getting time - if there are any honest agents left in the FBI, they had better start making themselves be known.

The Agency itself is about to lose all credibility with a huge segment of the American public - it is fading daily. If they don't act to acknowledge the treachery and face what has been done, they could very well end up being disbanded and replaced.

This is why I believe momentum is our friend. Keep those memos coming out as fast as possible. Nunes cracked open the door. Now it needs to be kicked in.

107 It is said that the artfully sculpted ponds and waterways in the park where the FBI building once stood, is a beautiful and very suitable monument.

Fittingly, it was made to look a bit like a swamp, as a reminder, and yes, a warning, to what few Federal Employees remain in the mostly emptied out marble edifices to excessive government.

D.C. was built on reclaimed swampland.

And the swampland had spent the last hundred years, doing it's best to reclaim it's right, at every desk and chair in the entire enterprise.

Until, that is, that one cold, fateful January day, when the Golden Scalpweasel stood astride the tide of sewage, and yelled, "Stop, BIGLY!"

And lo, it did. Not all at once, and not without a screaming and wailing and rending of garments so as to cause awe and wonderment from Job himself.

This, children, is the tale of The Trumperian Era...and here's the surprise.

It isn't a fable, and wasn't a fairy tale.

It really happened. Some of our Grandparents who witnessed it, are still alive to tell the tales, too.

Go, sit on their laps now, and learn the wisdom of your elders.

114 Just a bit more on the Page theme from last thread.

So the "evidence" for Page being dirty was merely an unverified
assertion in the infamous "dossier" that he met with dubious Russkis
while in Moscow, right? Where Page worked in a Merril Lynch office.
And where contact with dubious Russkis is no more avoidable than
breathing the air.

Gowdy, on at TV appearance said the FISA
affidavit re Page had three elements of documentation: dossier, news
story based on dossier, and "other information". He didn't specify what
that was. Unless it was hard evidence of the normal sort
(observations/surveillance/penetration of adversary's secrets), how TF
would a FISC judge approve Title I surveillance? And Gowdy would surely
have noted that the "other" info was compelling, if it were. And
McCabe's testimony that the dossier was the sine qua non for the
affidavit hangs out there.

Posted by: MISHBOT at February 05, 2018 07:59 PM (y3aQB)

121 The entire Trump/Russia collusion story is childish and unbelievable on its face. Think about it:

1) Obama is caught on open mike in 2012 telling Putin (actually President Dmitry Medvedev) that "he'll be more flexible after the election". If that's not being a patsy to Putin as well as the textbook definition of collusion I don't know what is, e.g.; Hey Vlad go light on me and I'll pretend to be tough on you and after the election I'll be flexible...win, wink, nudge, nudge. Meanwhile I'll give you what you want...like maybe 20% of our uranium?

2) Immediately after taking office he sends Hillary, his SoS to Russia with a plastic RESET button from Staples for crying out loud. And her staff mis-translates RESET to something confusing and incorrect. You might expect a stunt like this from a high school sophomore but it was embarrassingly amateurish and un-professional to anyone who is an adult.

3) Under Hillary as SoS and Obama's approval we sold 20% of our uranium to Russia. WTF? I thought they were the bad guys. Or is that only when a Republican needs to be discredited and smeared.

4) Obama threatened to bankrupt the coal industry and declared war on US oil production. Since oil production is Russian's leading source of income this would have been welcomed by Putin and he'd want more of it.

5) Hillary as President would have guaranteed MORE OF IT.

6) I won't even go into detail on Hillary's unsecured e-mails server which was no doubt read by every intelligence agency on the planet adn gave Putin plenty to blackmail her with.

So ask your self the question: Why on earth would Putin want to "hack our election" so that Trump would win. The same Trump who promised - and is delivering - US energy independence and Making America Great Again - thus hurting Russia economically where it hurts the most.

I read the sidebar link, too. In geochemistry, one runs across a similar term, "fugacity", which basically means the activity level of an ion species in a melt or solution. Sort of a hand-waving term, if you get my drift. Like whether you get calcite or dolomite precipitating from a carbonate solution might depend upon the "fugacity" of manganese in the solution, even though manganese doesn't enter into the makeup of either mineral.

174 JackStraw makes a good point about whistle-blowers - they aren't always public, or initially public.

On that topic, it *appears* there were likely at least one set of agents with the reaction so many here (rightly and understandably) are looking for.

Recall that Comey's last-minute letter to Congress about the very brief re-opening of the Clinton Espionage Act investigation was prompted by Weiner's laptop. Specifically, the discovery of Huma's huge and surely illegal store of official documents. McCabe had reportedly not told Comey about it - for weeks - in itself astounding.

In any case, I think some credible info has emerged that Comey moved to do the pro forma and very suspect (done by Peter Strzok!) review of the newly found material because a "revolt" was brewing among NY FBI field office people, and/or NYPD, if nothing were done - and Comey feared the appearance of sitting on explosive info.

Lots of "reported" elements there. But the thing is, it's very credible, and matches up with known circumstances and likely Comey motives and practices.

184 interesting list - a few modern whistleblowers

2011 - Peter Van Buren, a veteran Foreign Service Officer at the State Department authored the book We Meant Well, which exposed massive fraud while serving as the leader of two Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Iraq from 2009-10. It detailed how the U.S. wasted more than $44 billion in reconstruction efforts. In September 2012, he was forced to retire.

2011 - Christian Sanchez is a U.S. Border Patrol agent who was harassed after refusing overtime pay when there was no extra work to be performed at the Port Angeles, Washington office and briefing Congress about the waste of taxpayer dollars.

2012 - Larry Alt and Pete Forcelli, agents at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), helped expose issues surrounding the Operation Fast and Furious scandal, the program that resulted in federally-monitored guns ending up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels.

2012 - John Parsons was the Inspector General for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria ("The Global Fund") from 2008 to 2012. Under his leadership, the Office of the Inspector General revealed that up to two-thirds of certain Global Fund grants may have been lost to corruption through forged documents, improper bookkeeping, the diversion of donated prescription drugs to the black market, and other irregularities. The Global Fund's Board terminated Parsons in November 2012.

2012- Phyllis McKelvey is a retired USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) chicken inspector. Before leaving the USDA in 2010, McKelvy witnessed firsthand the damage the agency's new poultry inspection model creates, including turning inspection duties over to company employees and increasing line speeds to the point where inspectors have only 1/3 of a second to view a carcass. Her concerns led her to start a petition asking the USDA to halt its plans, which gained more than 180,000 signatures.

2013 -Jim Schrier, a veteran USDA meat inspector, reported clear humane handling violations involving market hogs at a Tyson Foods slaughter facility. After raising concerns to his supervisor, he was sent to work at a facility 120 miles away. His wife started a Change.org petition that has gathered more than 180,000 signatures asking the USDA to move her husband back to his original post near their home.

2013 - USDA poultry inspector Sherry Medina has collected more than 70,000 signatures in a Change.org petition asking Tyson Foods to stop its excessive use of hazardous chemicals in poultry processing. Medina exposed the serious health issues that she and other inspectors have experienced while working at a Tyson plant in Albertville, Alabama.

2013 - Edward Snowden is a former Booz Allen Hamilton federal contractor employee who disclosed information regarding the NSA's blanket surveillance of U.S. citizens through a secretive data-mining program that collects the phone records, e-mail exchanges, and Internet histories of hundreds of millions of people around the globe.

My point was - what, exactly, is the evidence that implicated Page as a Russian agent, apart from the claims in the dossier that he met with Sechin, et al (I believe Page has denied this, and it's "meh" fact even if true)?

Gowdy said FISA affidavit had three elements - dossier, Yahoo story based on same info, and "other info". Just curious what that "other" might be.

Since the first two elements are obviously b.s. claims from an unvetted and sort of ridiculous document, the "other" must be compelling - or not.

Just trying to imagine that unverified crap like the dossier would be sufficient to approve Title I surveillance on and American. Either "other" info was specific and good, or the FISC was deceived with rather flagrant DOJ misbehavior.

I have been thinking about that. In most scandals, it's safe to assume that the most extreme suspicions at the beginning won't be borne out, that the truth will end up being somewhere in the middle.

But everything that keeps coming out tells me that what really happened was far worse than what we expected. What really happened was the actual, total capture of the government by a faction of hard core criminals, who then corrupted every facet of that government with almost minimal opposition.

245 >>My point was - what, exactly, is the evidence that implicated Page as a Russian agent, apart from the claims in the dossier that he met with Sechin, et al (I believe Page has denied this, and it's "meh" fact even if true)?

The FBI is claiming that they had Page under surveillance since 2013 because they thought he was a Russian spy, 3 years before there was a dossier. .

The only part of that which is true is that they have known him since 2013 and they knew him as an employee of theirs.

Not only is their no evidence, he was an asset the FBI put him into the Trump campaign so they could then turn around and take out a warrant against him to spy on the Trump campaign or more accurately cover for the fact that they were already spying on the Trump campaign.

Posted by: JackStraw at February 05, 2018 08:29 PM (/tuJf)

246 And yet another point about Carter Page - do you notice how he has NOT been charged with lying to the FBI? Simple reason, every time he was questioned, he told them the absolute truth about everything he had been doing and who he had been meeting with. He hid nothing.

Some criminal, right?

What if most of the crap in the "Steele Dossier" in fact originated with this repellent pair, with "widely-respected British spy" Christopher Steele hired just to do a very low level of checking on the claims and then slap his own much-more-credible name on the shoddy "research"?

...Or, and I know this is a little tin foil hat for a respected blogger to repeat, but MAYBE -- just maybe-- Steele is the front man hired by the Clinton machine, in conjunction with their allies in the intelligence community, through a series of cut outs all around, to give the Deep State Operatives plausible deniability when/if it ever blows up on them that they were, in fact, spying on their political opponents.

...And maybe -- just maybe -- this goes deeper then Trump and has been going on for longer than Trump.

Because if we all think this originated with Clinton and Steele, straight shootin' career law men like Strzok (or however he spells his stupid name) and James Comey and Rod/Ron Rosenstein etc. are off the hook -- AT WORST they are only guilty of being gullible and falling for Clinton's political trick. Really, no one gets in (much) trouble in this scenario, and theres very little political blowback for anyone.

305 Golfman, that's a truly scary concept.

I pointed out that, based on what we know, the DOJ/FBI affidavit process before the FISC must have involved deception, and/or stunning incompetence. Golfman opined - OR the FISC doesn't care (is happy to go along with a farcical application).

This idea is absolutely in play. And no, the 99% approval rate does not, for me, give me all the answers - but that's a separate discussion. I'm talking straight-up, brazen lawlessness, of the sort we have seen the last year from courts usurping executive power. As bad as it was for a few decades now, I'd argue the last year has seen a whole 'nother level, and style, of lawlessness. Courts citing "motives", campaign statements, making absurd slanderous accusations about bigotry, etc. - pretty much in lieu of applying, you know, laws and the constitution.

In the past, "reforms" happened because both parties played along (leaving aside how well those things all turned out, over time). But now? We have a Dem Party openly, aggressively uninterested in spectacular unprecedented govt. lawlessness - in f***ing presidential election!

Just thinking about how it goes this time.

right. I'm in a town where an Asst DA after 8 years, went on trial for murdering his wife (pillow on head, rigor set in, removed pillow in morning, hands would not go down, oops, then lies lies lies) ... looked guilty as hell.

So after second trial he goes free (one year served), but comments I heard (from lawyers) indicate to me lawyers in town KNEW (for 8 years) he was guilty as hell. (made national news a few times) They stayed mum.

Why did none come forward? They KNEW? They are in "the game", and all locals mostly know and hate them.

The story of Papadopolous is pretty sketchy, too. NYMag has a few articles, with a link to the indictment, lying to the FBI.

Young hard charging policy advisor, seeking to ingratiate himself with Trump, establish Russian dialog, appears to get played/recruited by Russian intel with promises of hillary dirt*, within a month of joining campaign, muh Russian witch hunt begins, FBI interviews him, gives half answers about events a year earlier, freaks, and downhill from there.

They're ruining this young man for stupidity and the crime of being useful to take out Trump.

He is supposedly the genesis of the FBI Russian collusion investigation.

*Look for revelations to come regarding this shady op, which bears all the hallmarks of the Trump Jr. bait and switch with the Russian Fusion GPS lawyer.

So if none went to the obvious place to blow the whistle then certainly they didn't go blow the whistle some other place where they would most likely expect not to be heard.

However, we know one person associated with the Uranium One investigation (an informant) was willing to blow the whistle and that before Congress. Yet he disappeared off the face of the Earth, never to be heard from again.

He also wondered if the FBI knew he was still an agent for the Brits when they 'acquired" his services , which would also be illegal here and that is why they were squawking so much about having the memo released. They had dumped him as an informant or analyst or whatever he was doing for them when he started leaking classified material to the press.

386 This was an operation by a handful of the most senior people in the organization, one of the most secret organizations in the world. That's pretty much in their job description.

If this was all common knowledge at the FBI, don't you think we might have heard about it years ago?

____

In any given organization, the "little people" know what the execs are doing. Now you can make a case the the field agents knew but want to keep their jobs so they keep quiet. But it's ludicrous to think they didn't know. It's like saying I had no clue what Weinstein was doing even as I spent 25 years as B-list actor in Hollywood.

They all knew.

And unlike most operations in the FBI, both the Hillary email investigation and the Trump investigation took place entirely at FBI HQ by the same people.

There were no field offices involved. It was all controlled to prevent information from leaving what they even called a "small group" in one of the most secretive organizations on the planet. That's the whole point.

I don't know how much more obvious this can get. We had the top spies running a secret op that they knew had to be kept secret not just be kept from the public but from everyone including people in their own organization because what they were doing was highly illegal.

443 It's a Ponzi scheme.

It is nothing of the sort. Do you know anything about bitcoins or cryptos, in general?

The 100's of other coins are fruads.

Some are. Some are real cryptos. Some are just instant tokens. And even among the tokens, some are good and some are bad ... just like with pretty much everything else in life.

Hackers are getting better and are hacking into exchanges.

Exchanges have nothing to do with the underlying cryptos. If someone robs a bank does that reflect anything on the dollars? No, it doesn't.

The governments can seize them if traced back to a crime. Countries like South Korea has banned them. China is taking.

Bitcoins can be declared tainted and followed. That is true. That is part of what I don't like about bitcoin's open ledger. We had a reasonable discussion of this on a thread not more than a few days ago. Other coins, like Monero, cannot be tagged as such. They do not have open ledgers.

The fact NYTs burned it to the ground means to get out now or else. Take it to buy or sell.

Great and interesting point but this isn't exactly analogous. We are finding out about something just as enormous as Soviet infiltration in less than 20 or so months. Eventually we very well may learn there were some loyal FBI/DOJ employees who made certain this got out very quickly. Some of those folks may have done the actual footwork in "tapping Trump Tower."

california is different. you have the silicon valley, hollywood. every advantage imaginable. you have continuing successful enterprises, beautiful climate, and somehow the democrats are managing to destroy the place.

Conclusion: He wasn't. The DOJ National Security Division and the FBI Counterintelligence Division flat-out LIED.

[Asst. NatSec AG] John P Carlin who, together with the FBI counterintelligence unit, hired Carter Page as an FBI Under-Cover Employee, turns around and six months later accuses Page of being a Russian Spy--because the DOJ-NSD and FBI CoIntel needed to find a legal way to spy on the Trump campaign. The 2016 FISA Title 1 surveillance of former FBI employee Carter Page became that legal way. ["The Insurance Policy"]".......

527 Look, there are legitimate reasons to doubt the concept of a cryptocurrency, but arguing that they are Ponzi schemes is not one of them. There is no relation between bitcoin, specifically, and a Ponzi scheme.

As to the current drop, it isn't the biggest in bitcoin's short history. Bitcoin dropped 90% during its first major run-up and it has pretty regularly had huge drops since.

Now, I'm not saying that bitcoin is a buy or that it is a great crypto - I don't believe it is - but the idea of a crypto currency is real and legitimate and, most importantly, needed. It will form the basis of the most trustworthy fiat currency you could have - which is saying a mouthful since pretty much every currency on the planet is fiat, right now, and since even gold, itself, is a fiat money.

I have disagreed with bitcoin's (and other cryptos') highly inflated valuations for some time but they do have real value. They have value as potential money, and money is one of the most important assets in the world (and has been for a very, very long time).

Bitcoin suffers from many problems in its potential use as money. SOme of them have been solved by other cryptos. Some are still open issues. But this is the mere infancy of cryptos and such are expected ... especially seeing that we have had money for a long time and there are still open issues with all the forms of it that we have, now.

Sure. Government issued currencies have built in demand - specifically that the government forces people to use that currency to pay taxes and to be accepted as money. And that isn't unreasonable. The government could hardly let people pay taxes in chickens or any currency they see fit.

But there is room for money that knows no national borders. Gold is one sort (though gold's major problem - one of its only problems - is that it is difficult to transport and very difficult to transport across national borders). At present, the US dollar has served the function of the international reserve and trade currency ... but we have destroyed the dollar.

Cryptos are superior to paper money in most ways - not least of which by their very close control on the supply. They are inferior in a few ways and inferior to gold almost all ways, except that cryptos allow for transnational transfer without any problem or unusual cost.

Bitcoin suffers from lots of problems with its blockchain, partly because it's too open and partly because it's too expensive to maintain and must be constantly active in order to retain its integrity. But, right now, that is the price to be paid for an trustworthy, autonomous currency. It's a steep price but it's answering a deep need.

It's way past being an argument. It's what happened and it's becoming more and more obvious by the minute.

But your also leaving out the not insignificant piece that media has been involved in this up to their ass. That is what Fusion GPS does, the create narratives that their government allies pay them for and help support while at the same time burying any opposition and they had most of DC media in their pocket.

There is a huge difference in government employees between bureaucrats and political appointees and those that cling to them like remoras. The top levels of all these agencies are political people and that's where this conspiracy took place. Whether it was F&F or the IRS or any of the others and now this, it was all done by political people at the tops of all the agencies.

Yea, some others may have heard rumors or thought things were fishy as I have said. You trying being a whistleblower and quitting your job over a rumor. Not many do that in the private sector either.

586 Hillary lost because Americans wanted Trump's pro-American vision, not the anti-American vision of Democrats or the America-indifferent vision of the Uni-Party.

However, the Clintons sealed their fate on the Tarmac. It was arrogant to think they could get away with it. But they knew better than anyone not to talk on the phone.

We thought at the time it was about fixing Hillary's case. But I now think that was a given. I think the Tarmac Meeting was more about wiretapping and framing Trump.

When they got caught, Lynch had to "recuse" knowing the case was already fixed. Comey had to step up and take the heat so as not to look completely in the bag. He was completely in the bag of course, but he didn't want to appear like it.

All of this bit Hillary in the ass.

It wasn't supposed to go down like this. Lynch was supposed to go to the Supreme Court. Comey to AG. McCabe to Director, etc.

But their arrogance did them in.

Two things to remember:

1. Hillary's exoneration, the Clinton Dossier, the criminal wiretapping, the Mueller Probe and Impeachment: They Are All One Seamless Thing.

2. It was done out of the Oval Office.

588 darnit . how is gold a crypto currency?

Posted by: illiniwek at February 05, 2018 09:57 PM (bT8Z4)

I said that gold is a fiat currency.

Of course, you usually hear people talking about gold backing making a currency a non-fiat, which is true, but gold, itself, has no real value other than people really like it and people have been using it as money since the beginning of time, almost. Gold's main value is that people use it as money. That's it. That's why gold is, itself, a fiat money.

Of course, one of the great advantages of gold over other fiat currencies is that it can't be created (not practically) so its supply is very stable. That's also the reason why currencies backed by gold are thought to be non-fiat. They aren't, really, but since they are backed by gold their supply is limited to the available gold, which adds a huge amount of integrity to the currency.

589 gold is like a crypto currency. Spain decided that all the gold they found in Americas made them rich...only golly...the value of gold in spain dropped.

I do love that attitude. It is up there with the homeless statistics and child hunger statistics during a Republican administration.

How could we make it not insane that robbers would take everything from everyone with violence if they weren't restrained? Maybe we should have more laws against stealing?

And all those adulterers that lie about having extra-marital affairs, maybe we should make more laws against lying?

But if you agree that is stupid and pointless maybe we should ask if you are sure you are not buying into that wonderful socialist position that all those rich people got rich stealing from people like you and the way to make it equitable is that they give it back to you?

You missed the point about a large private bank called the FED literally printing money out of thin air taking the power away from Congress to print and coin money, the days the dollar was stable and backed by Gold.

Can't have a free market when you have a large central bank doing all the planning and printing. The 600 pound elephant in the room.

There really was no way Mueller could have ethically accepted the position given the known conflicts. I initially wrote off Trump's complaint that Mueller sought to replace Comey as FBI Director until someone pointed out Rosenstein accompanied him to that interview and turned around and appointed Mueller as SC the next day. Yeah. That was on the up and up.
