For me, I think what really makes this portrait most effective is how the hair sits on his head. You can see the wrinkles carving his face; the tired, heavy-lidded stare; and the gray in his beard, but the disheveled hair puts an exclamation mark on the mood of the piece. Take off the beard and he almost looks like my father.

95 From the last thread - I guess I must have some gay genes somewhere. Because I love Andrew Lloyd Weber, always have, and I could probably sing most of the score to "Superstar" and "Evita" by heart.

my secret shame.

Having said that, one of the things I personally like about "Superstar" is that it gives a very compelling treatment to three minor but important characters who are usually just cardboard cutout characters in all other dramatizations - Pilate, Judas, and Magdalene.

And the depiction of the High Priests has always pissed off most Jews, but it's accurate to what was recorded in the gospels.

Yep, they've been known to tunnel out. Only had that problem when we worked. Didn't like to be left home alone and tunneled under the fence to find company. Current beagle is quite content since we are home a lot.

Kris, You expressed it better than I did. I assume it is done in oil paint but for some reason, it makes me think of oil pastels or really good colored pencils that can be blended and overlayed for highlights.

I think it's oil. Oils were the major medium at this time (Dutch Baroque). If you embiggen it, you can see how van Eyck laid the pigments on thick on the forehead and under the eyes. You also see the different sizes of brushes used. If this were a finished work, the blending and shading would be much smoother. You really get to see the purpose of a study here. Very nice example.

This once again proves that the demos and large swaths of the bureaucracy have no loyalty to this country or the principles it was founded under and instead show fealty to the left and its principles. Yeah, but it's not too bad, not as bad as the House of the Giant Rat. There are a lot of pretty good restaurants in that complex, as you prolly know, and several bands and solo musicians.

Best thing is, I've never seen anyone there trying to cause any sort of trouble in the years I've playing there. Worst thing is what they charge for parking.

Also, I ran across a short video this morning on UToob by Jordan Peterson that I thought was really interesting. I clicked on it because of the title (he didn't title it, whoever posted it on UT did) since it sorta applied to our home situation, but discovered it was about something very different than what the title suggested. Found it very very interesting (as usual for Dr. Peterson, I'm a big fan now) and thought it might also have some value for you too.

192 From the last thread - I guess I must have some gay genes somewhere. Because I love Andrew Lloyd Weber, always have, and I could probably sing most of the score to "Superstar" and "Evita" by heart.

I like Joseph - the simpler original, though, not the bloated gas-fest it is now. I adore Evita and most of Phantom, Aspects of Love and Sunset Boulevard. His Jeeves is a pleasant, undemanding score.

I have never liked Superstar or Cats. And the less said about Whistle Down the Wind, The Woman in White and Love Never Dies, the better.

Unfortunately, I had moved the screen down so Nan Pelosi's picture from below was up. Spouse's response: "I didn't realize that van Dyck had done a study of Nancy Pelosi . That's creepy!"

199 Thank the Lord my lawyer has a strong pimp hand and is not a cuck. Was informed the ex tried to seduce him to continue day 4 of the temporary hearing until JUNE. He is having none of it. We have still yet to rest.

Her lack of self awareness is truly amazing. She has no idea how terrible she is coming off because she believes it's her show. Literally no witnesses and evidence.

She has pissed off a ton of people and her lies are going to bring down even more. I'd feel sorry for her but she made her bed and I have zero empathy or compassion for the enemy in I time of war.

I appreciate Ace and the Cobs and the Horde allowing me to vent, socialize, and bant. It paid huge dividends when I was on the stand and my lawyer told me I was his best witness he has ever had (and he tells me when I fuck up too).

I wouldn't know. The art trade is not a strength of mine. A self-portrait went for $13.5M in 2009. This is a study, so maybe less. But because it has the name "Anthony van Eyck" attached to it, and he was one of the more important Dutch painters, and court-painter to Charles I of England... who knows.

Well no. The GOP are playing by the rules. The problem is that the left only does when it suits their purposes.

When it doesn't they do whatever they want because they know the media won't just cover for them they will justify their actions and cheer them on. See The Pentagon Papers.

302 Artists spend a lot of time getting them right because they communicate so much.

Well, and you can mess up some stuff and only experts will notice, but everyone knows what faces and hands are supposed to look like. So you have to get them very right or everyone knows something is wrong, even if they don't know why or how.

The frustrating thing is that if you painted a picture of, say, Owen Wilson, people would say you messed up his nose. There are people who just look... wrong. Eyes not right, features off kilter. But if you did that in art, you'd get criticized for not understanding human anatomy.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at February 01, 2018 10:43 AM (39g3+)

303 That's probably why they don't have any trouble. That Peterson video is quite on the nose but good so far. I wish I'd had a Jordan Peterson to listen to, say, 30 years ago. Being the fool before you can become the master is entirely right and entirely the opposite of how I was conditioned and raised.

Same here on all points. I hoped you'd get as much from that video as I did.

I have his new book and can't recommend it enough. Most self-help books I've heard of don't have much in the way of good advice, just a bunch of New Age pabulum that just benefits the author more than anyone else. Peterson is so very different in his approach. I wish him every success and hope God watches over him just like President Trump.

It's hard to tell obviously, but an accepted stat is that somewhere around 80% of the women and girls who come into the US illegally are raped or sexually abused. By the coyotes or others. This is why we need the wall and to enforce legal immigration, so these abuses stop. It's one of my strongest arguments with ppl who think anyone for the wall is racist. I'm sure your neighbors thought that was one too many. My next door neighbor has a beagle that, whenever let outside, does not shut up. It just stands there and howls at the sky. Heaven forfend it spots a squirrel, because the racket goes up several notches. Even now, in the dead of winter, with doors and windows shut tight, the obnoxious sound of this dog is enough to drive one batty. In the summertime it's unbearable. And to make it worse, just this week they added a second beagle, a puppy that will undoubtedly imitate it's older housemate since their owners have made no effort to train them otherwise. Steps will be taken.

353 There are a lot of people fighting it, so it seems big.
But if it's a nothingburger, Trump will just tweet about something else the left will flip out over, and it will be forgotten in a couple weeks.

I can't wait, and agree that it'd better be pretty good. Saw a blurb this morning that mentioned "blackmail." If that turns out to be true, hooo boy...

That would 'splain so very much about turncoat politicians who talk a good game then turn around and betray their voters once the reach DC (Dondi, I'm looking straight at you).

$200 a month more for my brother. It almost makes me cry thinking of how many people are going to benefit from this, people who really need that money. Yeah a lot of it will be wasted on stupid crap but still, its theirs to spend.

I know how my dad struggled to just pay bills when I was a kid. Mom would send off a check of like $5 or $10 a month to the hospital or any other big bill. They'd call angrily and she would calmly say "look if you take it to a collection agency, you won't get all your money back. If you're patient I'll pay it all off, this is all we can afford."

This tells how badly the government has been strangling people over the years.

385 Powerpoint isn't so bad if you know how to use it. Unfortunately, not a lot of people do. Most use it as a crutch and pack their entire text onto the slide, when it's just for illustrations of points. The worst is when they do all that and then read off of it.

I once used it to create a mock website for a class project. We had to design an art exhibit and its marketing. I used powerpoint to create each page of the site, complete with working links and went through it in class. Blew the prof away and got an A. Made sure I went first too, so everyone after was compared to mine. LOL.

Best (and most complete) tax cut I ever got was from Obama. It's only under Trump that I've had to start paying taxes again.

Paying taxes is much better.

If this memo comes out, I have a long list of less sensitive, but still classified, information that the American people deserve to see. #secretlaw

You can almost hear the music playing behind it.

But if this is stuff the American people deserve to see, why the holdup? Why keep it and not let it out? Its just a pathetic attempt at blackmail by a wretched feeb.

If you're taxed as an individual and aren't in the upper tax brackets, you probably won't see a big change.

If you're taxed as a corporation and are in the higher tax brackets, you will most likely see a decrease.
Posted by: Harry Paratestes at February 01, 2018 11:19 AM (F5+ro)

Uh... there is a new 20% tax deduction for net profit on small businesses...

So you will get your standard deduction, or itemized deductions, AND 20% of profit off the top will also be a new deduction...

Of course, the media does not want to talk about it... but look it up.... if you are an LLC... your taxes are going down.

558 437 Christopher Walken knows that Wagner killed her. "Wagner found out she was doing the Malibu mamba with Walken and kicked her off the boat."

That MIGHT be true, but at this point it can never be proved. This is just a publicity stunt on a famous old case meant to garner some publicity and TV time for the detectives wasting time on it.

Why nothing will come of it: First, the physical evidence is indeterminate. Police have already admitted that. So we're down to only 3 possible eyewitnesses; Wagner, Walken, and the Captain of the boat.

Walken may or may not have known, but he doesn't DARE say so now or else he opens himself up to criminal charges of having concealed evidence in a murder case for 40 years. To protect himself, Walker HAS to simply repeat everything he has said before - he has no choice.

Wagner is 87 years old. When the police request an interview, his lawyer will send them a note saying "We're very sorry, but Mr. Wagner is being treated for Alzheimer's and does not remember anything before last Tuesday". End of that.

And the Captain is the worst of all - a notorious alcoholic who has given out half a dozen totally contradictory stories over the years, depending on who was paying him. So his testimony may make for good copy in the papers, but it's totally worthless in court because he has contradicted himself publicly so many times.

And that is where this case ends. We will never know any more than we know right now, and right now we know nothing for sure at all.
