Baltimore Sun: Frosh, a Democrat, said that diverting those funds puts him in a tough position. I hate to have to choose between defending Marylander's against the Trump administration and defending them against people who are trying to rip them off in other contexts, but that's the choice that's been put before us this year, Frosh said. Another fine example of the Romantic theme of Man vs. Nature. Look at how the humans are rendered puny and powerless. They even blend into the landscape with only a small daub of red to draw your eye to them. Meanwhile, the landscape is huge and menacing. The crashing, crushing waves slam against the solid, towering rocks. Notice too how the people, who should be the focus, but aren't, are limited to the very bottom of the piece, while the exact center holds the most violent image of the painting. Vernet further emphasizes this area buy giving it a spotlight effect. This spotlight is repeated on the people--while he wants them to remain secondary, he doesn't want you to miss them entirely. Vernet wants you to feel the terror, drama and tragedy of this scene.

That painting reminds me of the time I jumped into the wave pool at Wet n' Wild years ago and it was a lot more intense than I expected. I kept trying to swim to the side, but the waves kept washing me back and interrupting my breathing.
I remember a girl on an air mattress saying, I think that guys drownin'" in a lovely southern drawl. I was thinking, "Could this be the end of Rico." Anyway, long story short, I survived. Love the use scale and of color in this storm scene with the grays of the water, clouds, and the wet rocks. The small figures emphasize the deadly force of nature that humans face in their endeavors on the ocean. Anyone who has shivered watching waves smashing against rocky cliffs can feel the wind, mist and cold. Very effective. Also a bit different from many other Vernet paintings which are usually very bright even when the subject is tragic.
Doyle has Sherlock Holmes mention he is related to Vernet the artist. Looking at these other paintings I can see how they would appeal to Doyle, who thought his White Company adventure and other books would outlive the Holmes stories. Posted by: JTB at January 23, 2018 09:53 AM (V+03K) 128

I'm quite a distance from making a decision but honestly I'm leaning Akita--probably a female, which would run maybe 110 pounds. That breed would require focussed training for the first six months, maybe year to establish dominance and socialize her but that might be an awesome distraction. I'm aware of shedding issues but I can take her out for brushing once or twice a year. A dog that is gentle with visitors but slightly aloof might be my personal preference over a dog that jumps on every lap. But the fact that they're touting this as though it's supposed to be a big point of excitement means that they're not actually paying attention to anything that would make the movie actually entertaining means I don't have much hope for it to be anything but blatant pandering. some were talking about Napolitano at FOX ... it seems to me he got "a little hinky" after his brief "suspension". imo he started getting a lot of things wrong, not sure who he was serving but it wasn't good.
anyway ... so I looked up why he got suspended, it was over his claim (March 2017) that Obama had spied on Trump using FISA, and that he had used the Brits (GCHQ) to get around the "Americans spying on Americans" problem. He came back to Fox a new man, or a neu'tered man maybe. He said he had good sources, he probably did. But shadow people didn't want that known. They claimed it was debunked, but all that word means now is that they could not confirm it was true, not that it is proven false. foxnews.com/opinion/2017/03/16/andrew-napolitano-did-obama-spy-on-trump.html Posted by: illiniwek at January 23, 2018 10:24 AM (bT8Z4) 290
The Democratic House members have it so easy. They really don't have to vote and when they do they can vote "no" (or anything) and it has no event. Hi everyone.
So - brake cleaner. This is normally something I would have asked my dad, and he would have insulted me for not knowing it before he grudgingly gave me the answer. I'm setting up to do a brake job, and I need to clean up the calipers. Conventional wisdom has been to keep the brake cleaner off any rubber, plastic, or painted parts. No problem and I've always been very careful about that - but then I got a brake cleaner that doesn't use a chloridated solvent and apparently it's a bit murkier. So, can one use a non-chloridated brake cleaner and not worry about getting it on the rubber brake lines....? Anyone have any experience with something like that? The only way the whole black/female/trans James Bond thing could work is if you believed the fan theory that "James Bond" is a codename passed down from one agent to the next. However, the backstory portions of Skyfall, as well as the fact that Roger Moore made multiple references to a dead wife (happened on Lazenby's watch) disprove this theory and establish that the movies are about Ian Fleming's character.

"353 FOX is reporting that all the House and Senate committees working on this huge scandal have severed all communication with the FBI and DOJ.
Wonder what this means." It means they're denying the FBI and DOJ from having any right to look at copies of what they have or to find out any information as to what they are doing, until those committees decide to release results publicly. It's a separation of powers thing. If they were cooperating, then the FBI and DOJ could use that cooperation to keep tabs on what they had found out so far. Bottom Line - Congress is now officially treating the FBI and DOJ as criminal conspirators who cannot be trusted with any confidential information. 90% of the story of PT-109 and JFK was made up BS. It was hyped and pushed out there by patriarch Joe Kennedy to get JFK elected to the Senate. And the book "Profiles in Courage" was also a Joe Kennedy masterpiece written by a professional ghost writer.

FYI, for those who read JJ's report below, no tsunami and no damage from the series of earthquakes last night in the Gulf of Alaska. UAF Earthquake Center reports two quakes of 7.9 magnitude, rather shallow (8 and 9 miles respectively) and several aftershocks in the range of 4.5. These were a long way from Kodiak Island, and pretty much in the middle of the gulf, so not too close to civilization.

Geography of the situation is such that tcn, who lives in Anchorage, should not be directly affected by the quake, unless its waves/shaking reached that far (unlikely). Tsunami action should not directly affect Anchorage area.
The Congress/FBI thing is very interesting. Yesterday it was limited to the three big House chairmen involved in the Mega-Scandal investigation refusing to share "the memo" with the FBI. Of course the memo is supposed to have been built on materials provided by the FBI, so the FBI's request was somewhat odd in itself. If true that most comms have been cut with FBI, it is 1) extraordinary, and of course unprecedented in our history, indicating the gravity of the institutional collapse we have witnessed, and 2) ho-hum, routine. Which raises the question of what would have happened if he'd been reelected in '64, or if Goldwater or another Republican could have beaten him. Most people assume he would have easily won, but keep in mind that the whole reason he went to Dallas was, as I understand, to mend a rift in the Texas Democratic party. So perhaps he was already getting concerned about his prospects? Posted by: Secret Square at January 23, 2018 11:01 AM (+HoK2) 418

I'm setting up to do a brake job, and I need to
clean up the calipers. Posted by: WitchDoktor, AKA VA GOP Sucks at January 23, 2018 10:28 AM (eytER) The non-chlorinated brake cleaner is basically alcohol in a spray can. It won't harm the rubber parts. In fact methyl alcohol is the recommended solvent for cleaning hydraulic brake components. But I have had no issues with using the chlorinated stuff, either, and I prefer it, because it cuts grease much better. Just don't get either on the car's paint job. It probably won't cause damage, but if it does, dollars grow wings... Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 23, 2018 11:03 AM (YA0uK) 425

Suicides in bunkers? Mass surrenders?" Consider the POV of the Dem Leadership: The leaders are hunkering down in their bunkers, still professing confidence in victory. Enemy columns are coming in from all sides, defenses crumbling as the situation gets more and more desperate. All thoughts of new offensives have been given up as fighting to save what they still hold consumes every waking hour. Meanwhile, the enemy gets bolder and bolder by the hour. They know the situation has only one possible ending, but their ideology doesn't allow them to accept that conclusion yet, hence no plans are being made to deal with it when it comes.
