Time was that someone could (and many did) ask this of Meghan McCain.
But that was a while ago. Now she's a fairly mainstream member of the party and she's curious why Ana Navarro still markets herself as a "Republican."While the rest of the panel tried to place the blame for the shutdown on Republicans, McCain argued that the Democrats caused it by trying to attach DACA to a spending bill. "Plain party politics," she said. "There's another month to figure out DACA -- they"re attaching it to a spending bill." "I understand that DACA is a very emotional issue at this point but most Republicans are on my side on this one, Ana, and it's difficult for me to understand sometimes why you still consider yourself a Republican," McCain said.She needs to ask Jen Rubin the same question. By the way, federal prosecutors have announced their intent to re-try Bob Menendez on the bribery and corruption case which resulted in a mistrial last time. "Republican" Ana Navarro has fund-raised for this corrupt Democrat and says he's a "member of the family" just because he's Hispanic. Which is, of course, racist.

In principle, I'm with JJ and others whose only question about "solutions" to the "dreamer" issue is "trebuchet, or conventional transportation?".
For strategic reasons, I wouldn't mind a skinny DACA in exchange for EVERYTHING. Not a negotiating thing, really. DACA is an amnesty. In the context of 2018, any amnesty is insanely dangerous, for its demonstration effect. Trump's election re-set mentalities on all sides. An amnesty would do a lot to squander that and return us to 1986-2016.
To "neutralize" DACA's amnesty, one really does need the entire agenda in place. Internal enforcement, border security, adequate deportation infrastructure (personnel/courts), no more "sanctuary" lawlessness.
I have no doubt Trump understands the political practicalities here. As many of us have noted, and some congresscritter tweeted last week, any DACA deal will the *only* immigration-related deal Trump gets in his first term (barring a GOP blowout in November). That's it. It's enormous, perfect leverage. But once used, there is nothing left.

I have to say, I really lost a lot of respect for the Democratic Party in this shutdown thing. They always seemed to position themselves well on these types of legislative games of chicken, but they were never going to win this time. At the very least they should have realized back in December with the passing of the tax cuts that the Republicans had found some semblance of a spine. The Democrats went to their same dusty old playbook on the tax bill and it failed spectacularly: tax cuts for the rich, old people dying in the streets, etc. Why they thought that championing illegal immigration was going to be a winning issue is beyond me. I used to think of them as cunning, maybe not intelligent, but very crafty. I am now wondering if a great part of Democratic success over the last 20 years or so has been the absolute fecklessness of the Republican Party.

That's what I don't get. Schumer's known Trump for a long time, he knows what Trump's all about. The only thing I can figure is that they assumed that the Republicans would capitulate like they always have, which if they were paying attention would have seen probably wasn't going to happen. Either that or they thought that going through with the shutdown and quitting would be better for them than not going through with the shutdown at all, which seems really stupid because all they've done is confirm their weakness.

Indeed. In the runup to the election there were those (here at the Q, and even some known name pundits) who said Trump would get 25% of the black vote. I knew that was ridiculous. But it wouldn't take much to do better than any other Republican, ever. Trump did better than any Republican since GHWB in 1988, and it is within margin of error - he might have done better. He got into double digits which is pretty respectable, considering.
During the runup to the election I had people of color tell me that Trump's lack of support of among African Americans was proof of his racism. (Black people don't like you, that means you are a racist. Go figure.) Anyway, I wondered then how that fits into, you know, actual reality. You know what support John McCain had among African Americans?
1%. One measly percent. Yeah, I know, against Obama, but still, if your support among African Americans is a reflection of your racism, if Trump's support was 10%, and McCain 1%, doesn't that mean that John McCain is 10x more racist?
Hell, Mitt managed to DOUBLE McCain's showing among African Americans. But that still makes him WAY more racist than Trump.

They are talking about 20-30 million freaking people.
No one seems to blink an eye at the idea and even some pundits are saying that this somehow used to be mainstream thinking until the racist fascist Trump seized the government.

It's worth noting that he only pulled 55% in his last re-election. Meanwhile, Tim Scott also ran in a special election that year and pulled a greater share of the vote (61%) and more total votes than Graham. At some point either a legit SC Republican is going to primary him and win or enough people will get fed up and the Democrat will win in the general.

Protestants versus Catholics for the win. And it went on almost from the beginning until around the time Kennedy got elected. I remembered as a kid how Kennedy came up as a topic and my mother said oh there was a lot of talk about electing a Catholic and how that could be a really scary situation because people thought he'd be subservient to the Pope. I thought that was weird, but only because all of that stuff was largely over by the time I was born.
There was a significant section on Irish immigration and how it really caused a lot of problem back East. They were a big driver of machine politics and organized crime (in Chicago Al Capone spent a long time destroying the Irish syndicate to take the top spot). One factoid I remember from the book is that they definitely weren't sending their best because the insane asylums in Massachusetts were absolutely packed to the rafters with lunatic leprechauns. They almost bankrupted the budget! Those no Irish need apply signs made more sense when you learned about their shenanigans.
We also got the Kennedys from them. And the legislation that has nearly broken the country with immigrants came from Dear Old Teddy.

I like most of them: Rush, Levin, Steyn, TuCa, even Hannity on occasion.
But I have a friend who like Levin but hates Rush, another friend liked Beck (at least I remember him liking Beck when he was tangentially conservative) but didn't listen to or watch any other conservative outlets except Blaze,as far as I knew.
So I think a lot of people respond to style or personalities. I don't really get it but after all Hannity does have millions of listeners and viewers every day. And if that gets the conservative message out to certain people that wouldn't necessarily hear that message than I am all for it.
We should have conservative talkers that appeal to every single low info, no info, Johnny Six Pack, and Jane Pearl Clutcher that is possibly out there.
Breitbart knew that politics is downstream of culture.

I was a Rush baby but I know Rush strikes a lot of people as a country club guy and that turns them off. Levin isn't perfect but he has a lot of great things to say on Constitutional Law (after all he's a former Reagan Admin lawyer), but his screaming also turns people off.
Long story short, I'd put a talking hamburger on TV if it converted people from leftism to conservatism (or "Hannitze" them as Sean would say).

Someone on youtube is keeping up on Badfinger because they removed their Greatest Hits album I had favorited.

The reviving economy will exert quite a pull. Which is why a border barrier system (which magically can't work, or something) is critical, sooner the better. Along with internal enforcement priorities moving beyond violent/gang elements to major employers of illegals. The audit of 7-11 was interesting. But time for DHS to adopt a "broad front" in enforcement. Until barriers are up it is the only thing that can dampen the magnet effect of a reviving economy.

A lot of them are involved in petty crime, drugs, and other seedy shit. I'm not aware if they have the proclivity for kidnapping like Hispanics, but I'm sure the dui rate isn't far behind.
It's really an echo from an earlier time when the elites back then also wanted cheap labor so they hired the Irish. This was before blacks started their migrations north. A Bridget was an ethnic slur to refer to any young Irish woman who engaged in menial labor (because most of them were).

I read something interesting a while back.. No idea from who or where or when, so no link.
But the idea was to eliminate prisons altogether. All crimes are punished either financial or corporeally.
Steal something? Cause economic damage? Defraud someone? You repay them damages, enforced via criminal court as opposed to civil court.
Commit some sort of "crime against society"? Or call it a crime against civilization? Rape, Assault, Murder, etc.? You get corporeal punishment, up to and including the death penalty.
Come here illegally? Repay whatever you owe the State, then get Kicked the F. O. back to wherever you came from.
The whole idea of a "prison" as anything other than a spot to hold a suspect until you figure out what's up is felt as inevitable, just a feature of life, but it's kind of a new idea.

People are coming here for goodies and off-the-books work. We also need to address these issues or the wall is only solving part of the problem.
Seems like welfare and min. wage (both Democrat sacred cows) have given incentives for people to come here illegally.

You can go back and quickly find out it was a really big problem. Immigrants came here and quickly got into a lot of trouble. Lots of gangs. We all think of the mafia and the Sicilians and Italians but the Jews and the Irish created a lot of gangs too. On the West Coast they had big problems with Chinese tongs. Since many of the people who came here came from places where poor nutrition and just general shittyness ruled the day, you also had a lot of mental defectives and criminals.
Certainly there wasn't welfare like there is today, but the ethnic groups formed associations that tended to help out new arrivals. They also told them how to vote (surprise!).
Also, there was a lot more room. Immigrants would eventually drift out west where they could start new criminal enterprises like the Irish gangs in Chicago I mentioned earlier. If you're interested look up Dean O'Banion on the internets and follow some links. The Irish had a lot of crime syndicates, but the Italians were more ruthless and destroyed them.
Then a lot of these immigrants were Catholics and that caused all sorts of problems with the Protestant Legacy Americans of the time. All kinds of problems. The KKK was formed largely to counter Catholics. Sure they hated blacks and Jews, but they REALLY hated Catholics.
For all the touted success stories about immigration, there's a mountain of bodies just underneath the surface. It really could've gone in a much more destructive way than it did. The assumption that it's always going to be a net positive is not really valid, imo.

Interesting. I guess I assumed that many immigrants came here through Ellis Island or whatever back in the day, but mainly would move into ethnic neighborhoods and the poorest would be attracted to crime/gangs. I didn't know if there was a serious illegal immigration problem pre-modern times.
