Democrats Give Up on Shutdown; Vote for Cloture on CR Passes, Setting Up Vote to Re-Open Government

The CR will keep the government open just for two and a half weeks, until February 8th.

McConnell offered them his personal commitment that they'd vote on a DACA bill in the meantime, but they say that Republicans already made that offer. And also note there's no guarantee that bill will pass, or what the bill will actually say.

Oh, in the meantime, Schumer has been claiming he offered a grand compromise to the president and the GOP, offering to support authorization for the wall.

That's a con. The wall was authorized in 2006; what is lacking is appropriations for money to actually build it. So Schumer has been claiming he's "compromising" by offering to authorized that which was authorized going on 12 years now. While continuing to not offer what is actually needed, money.

The DACA program that Obama created by EO said to these folks if you register here, we won't bust you.

Trump wrote a new EO that said, yeah, not anymore. In six months, this doesn't apply to you.

That six months isn't up until March. I suppose he could Vader it and alter the deal, but the deal is you sign up, we won't bust you.

I think it can be both, while being realistic about certain areas where the terrain naturally makes it less secure that others.

At minimum, it makes it harder to use a car or truck to cross the border, and anything that requires time to climb over provides more time for Border Patrol to get there. I've seen the "virtual border" in Arizona, and as cool as it is that they have electronic devices that monitor and sound an alarm when a person is detected within the range of their sonar beamed across the border line (or whatever it is), it still requires an in-person follow-up. A walls buys them some time.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. Don't all spending and tax bills need to originate in the House? The Senate doesn't "appropriate" funds, it either approves, disapproves, or modifies what the House sends them.

This Democrat shutdown theater is over the Continuing Resolution that was sent to the Senate by the House. They modified it, then the Dems refused to vote for it despite being in agreement with what it said.

Now they are agreeing to the modified version, which then needs to go back to the House for another vote.

Yes, that was certainly concerning. I have to wonder if all that has happened since he initially expressed this has changed his mind?

Specifically, the leaked memo by the Hillary campaign/Center for American Progress woman specifying how DACA kids are critical in future Democrat victories, and the way that Schumer and Pelosi have treated Trump since they started negotiating.

I am hoping that, plus the outcry from his base might have changed his mind a bit on the issue. Schumer has made sure that this is a win/lose for Trump, that it cannot be w win/win with his insistence on giving him DACA for nothing.

It has taken longer than immediately, but he has done just that.

He did NOT promise that he would deport every DACA recipient.

I believe Gateway Pundit ran a story yesterday of five illegals who were found in either Texas or Arizona dead from exposure to freezing temps a couple weeks ago. They were found by hunters.

Photos are pretty gruesome, several had become dinner for coyotes, etc. Border Patrol said that human coyotes take their money, get them to the border, point and leave them. None are dressed or have water, or provisions to withstand several nights in freezing temps. desert conditions, etc.

The wall in these areas would stop them from trying to cross in those areas. Walls can be used to funnel illegals into areas easier to patrol and stop.

The insertion of 100% effectiveness as an unspoken metric of success is a dick move by the left.

And in conversation, I push back on it at every opportunity. The example I use is seat belt.

They don't save every life, but they are recognized as effective enough that federal standards require them.
And most people in this debate have worn a seat belt.

Bingo. the border is 2,000 odd miles, but only 700 odd miles of that border is in any way hospitable for a hiking illegal alien. The rest is ridges and deserts. How many people could climb a 30 foot wall, and dismount on the side without breaking their necks? Hence my "Olympic material" comment. The Pennsylvania State Police don't patrol every mile of the Turnpike every minute. Every 100 miles or so they have a command center. Officers get into their cars daily and drive from one command center to the next, then return. Probably one every hour. Continuous coverage but not constant.

That's my view of the wall. A fence, then a single lane road, then another fence. Every once in a while it would have two lanes for a short distance to accommodate two cars getting around each other.

From what I read, it says the SF teams used climbing equipment , saws, torches, jackhammers and other tools.

The designs were trying to foil such things, and this is what they were testing.

Also, it said they were just doing this as sort of experiment, and that the final design will likely combine the best elements of all the prototypes.

Every summer bodies are found in the Sonoran desert area of southern Arizona, they're not even publicized very much it's so common. You can't walk across it in the summer, your body will be baked, and you'll be frozen if you try in the winter. And even in spring and fall, you still can't carry enough water to make it the full 150 miles you'd need to walk to get to some civilized areas.

Plus, note that a city abutted The Wall on both sides: not untold miles of trackless desert. That made crossing The Wall a lot easier.

For my part, I'm happy to welcome as many Mexicans into the US who can cross by gliders and homemade balloons. We can work with people with that kind of initiative.

So, everyone else, regardless of parentage, who is born on US soil, is subject to the Jurisdiction of the US, and thus is given automatic citizenship at birth by virtue of the 14th amendment.

This can only be changed by another constitutional amendment which would change and revise that language.
