Democrats Give Up on Shutdown; Vote for Cloture on CR Passes, Setting Up Vote to Re-Open Government
The CR will keep the government open just for two and a half weeks, until February 8th.
McConnell offered them his personal commitment that they'd vote on a DACA bill in the meantime, but they say that Republicans already made that offer. And also note there's no guarantee that bill will pass, or what the bill will actually say. Oh, in the meantime, Schumer has been claiming he offered a grand compromise to the president and the GOP, offering to support authorization for the wall. That's a con. The wall was authorized in 2006; what is lacking is appropriations for money to actually build it. So Schumer has been claiming he's "compromising" by offering to authorized that which was authorized going on 12 years now. While continuing to not offer what is actually needed, money.Comments

If you think that anything short of deporting every DACA recipient is amnesty, well, it is going to be amnesty. But, if you allow for a legal status that is NOT citizenship and does not allow for it other than the ordinary, legal channels (i.e, go back home and apply from there), and in return get modifications to visa lottery and chain migration (I won't say elimination is impossible, but half a loaf, right?) as well as actual funding for the wall?
That is what I think we will get, and you need to gird your loins for that win.

I think it can be both, while being realistic about certain areas where the terrain naturally makes it less secure that others.
At minimum, it makes it harder to use a car or truck to cross the border, and anything that requires time to climb over provides more time for Border Patrol to get there. I've seen the "virtual border" in Arizona, and as cool as it is that they have electronic devices that monitor and sound an alarm when a person is detected within the range of their sonar beamed across the border line (or whatever it is), it still requires an in-person follow-up. A walls buys them some time.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. Don't all spending and tax bills need to originate in the House? The Senate doesn't "appropriate" funds, it either approves, disapproves, or modifies what the House sends them.
This Democrat shutdown theater is over the Continuing Resolution that was sent to the Senate by the House. They modified it, then the Dems refused to vote for it despite being in agreement with what it said.
Now they are agreeing to the modified version, which then needs to go back to the House for another vote.

Specifically, the leaked memo by the Hillary campaign/Center for American Progress woman specifying how DACA kids are critical in future Democrat victories, and the way that Schumer and Pelosi have treated Trump since they started negotiating.
I am hoping that, plus the outcry from his base might have changed his mind a bit on the issue. Schumer has made sure that this is a win/lose for Trump, that it cannot be w win/win with his insistence on giving him DACA for nothing.

What Trump said during the campaign was that he would end Obama's illegal DACA program immediately.
It has taken longer than immediately, but he has done just that.
He did NOT promise that he would deport every DACA recipient.

I believe Gateway Pundit ran a story yesterday of five illegals who were found in either Texas or Arizona dead from exposure to freezing temps a couple weeks ago. They were found by hunters.
Photos are pretty gruesome, several had become dinner for coyotes, etc. Border Patrol said that human coyotes take their money, get them to the border, point and leave them. None are dressed or have water, or provisions to withstand several nights in freezing temps. desert conditions, etc.
The wall in these areas would stop them from trying to cross in those areas. Walls can be used to funnel illegals into areas easier to patrol and stop.

IIRC, there are Lefties attempting to buy up border land to fight against every last mile of the border. I would assume after legal challenges fail they would attempt to destroy the wall physically.

How many people could climb a 30 foot wall, and dismount on the side without breaking their necks? Hence my "Olympic material" comment. Yep, Texas. Brooks county has scores of dead illegals every year even though it's well north of the border. The coyotes take them off into the brush in order to avoid the Falfurrias highway checkpoint, and anyone who can't keep up gets left behind to die. Some are never found after the hogs get done with the bodies. A lot of the female illegals are raped and murdered there too. I met a rancher whose dog brought him a decomposed woman's head. Fun.

The Pennsylvania State Police don't patrol every mile of the Turnpike every minute. Every 100 miles or so they have a command center. Officers get into their cars daily and drive from one command center to the next, then return. Probably one every hour. Continuous coverage but not constant.
That's my view of the wall. A fence, then a single lane road, then another fence. Every once in a while it would have two lanes for a short distance to accommodate two cars getting around each other.

From what I read, it says the SF teams used climbing equipment , saws, torches, jackhammers and other tools.
The designs were trying to foil such things, and this is what they were testing.
Also, it said they were just doing this as sort of experiment, and that the final design will likely combine the best elements of all the prototypes.
They're letting a little competition determine the best type of wall.

Every summer bodies are found in the Sonoran desert area of southern Arizona, they're not even publicized very much it's so common. You can't walk across it in the summer, your body will be baked, and you'll be frozen if you try in the winter. And even in spring and fall, you still can't carry enough water to make it the full 150 miles you'd need to walk to get to some civilized areas.

The news reports said that there was a concern about dismounting from a 30 foot wall (i.e., a three story building). How many people could climb a 30 foot wall, and dismount on the side without breaking their necks? Hence my "Olympic material" comment. Sure, with the appropriate hardware, some training, and a lot of huevos, someone could do it, but most people couldn't/wouldn't want to try.

The bars have a solid header starting around 10 - 15 feet and reaching 60 feet. The top is rounded thus repels grappling hooks. And then, if you reach the top you have to find someway to drop 60 feet with out injury.

These payments are one of the biggest reasons so many illegal aliens come here. It's a huge rip-off of American taxpayers, and it needs to end.

As part of the entire, freaking obvious and logical, total package - secure border, internal enforcement, and a business-like deportation process as is being restored now - border barriers will be highly, highly effective. Total game changer, if you're reference point is - as it should be - the last 30 years of lawlessness.
Knew the guy in charge of the anti-tunnel ops in the San Diego sector. Fun and games for those guys. But of course those very expensive, time-consuming efforts to defeat the barrier were only done for high-value things (drugs) - not remotely relevant to the mass migration that has transformed large parts of the southwest. And they're not that hard to defeat. Big loser for the bad guys - defeating them costs a fraction of the $$$/time it takes to create them.
While we're at it, let's talk about the absurd NPR-level myth that "visa-overstayers" account for most of the massive growth in illegals in the US since '86 (one MORE reason a secure border isn't important). Why not stipulate and stumble over *every* facially ridiculous myth in the collection?

One of the few areas where Levin is just wrong, he lets his ideology blind him. The relevant passage is the first line of the 14th amendment: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State within which they reside."
That is pretty straight language, and it's clear that the only dispute is what the phrase "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" means. Ever since Wong Kim Ark (1989), our courts have worked with the definition that "Subject to the Jurisdiction Thereof" means that you can be arrested by the police authorities (state or federal) if you violate the law. Those who cannot be arrested, such as foreign ambassadors and (at the time this was written) Native Americans who could only be arrested by Tribal Police as long as they were on the res, were not "subject to the jurisdiction of." So, everyone else, regardless of parentage, who is born on US soil, is subject to the Jurisdiction of the US, and thus is given automatic citizenship at birth by virtue of the 14th amendment.
This can only be changed by another constitutional amendment which would change and revise that language.
