12 Cat is currently swanning around the apartment, looking for the best place to rest his butt. He's been sleeping on my feet for a while, but clearly that wasn't up to his standards, because he's on the prowl again. He is, of course, completely ignoring the cat bed and the half-dozen folded blankets and towels set in various strategic nap spots.

15 Happy the cold snap is over. Almost 80lbs of birdseed used in the last 3 weeks. We have multiple feeders in the front and back yards. Also large seed cakes and suet.
Had our first possum under the feeders yesterday. And still have our lone coyote stalking our 5 acres. Husband has a loner rifle but hasn't had a chance to try it on the coyote. It moves too quickly when he exits the house. The 22 did nothing but scare it. Nephew loaned him the civilian version of a M16. Pretty much what he shot in Viet Nam.

39 We're still traveling with our old Weimaraners. Yesterday an RV pulled in next to us with 2 Akita. I don't know much about these dogs except that they can be very territorial and aggressive. Someone walked by with a small terrier and the Akita were outside and they went crazy. The owners had to wrestle them inside their RV. Our dogs don't even want to walk by, but they're older and don't want to get involved in any trouble. We're only going to be here another week and I can keep my dogs away from them. They are beautiful dogs but are they normally this crazy aggressive?

51 Love this thread. Animal stories. What personalities...all of them.

Patch the male of our two Maine Coons loves to find and drag an length of cord, yard, fabric etc. to us (pushes open bath door if not pulled completely shut) and wants to play. His favorite is when we end play with throwing it on top of the cat tree so he can "save it". he wants to play this endlessly. Like a dog with a ball. Meanwhile, Fluff the female cat rummages around in Heidi's jewelry box if she leaves it open.

Chicks...amirite?

52 Since we don't have photos how about stories?
On a thread this week we were talking about greyhounds and I mentioned a wife's company picnic years ago someone had their greyhound that was a former racer. Well to add to that there were 2 other dogs as well that wanted to play fetch. Neither of the other two could out race the greyhound so I took 1 ball and threw it as far s I could, the greyhound was off to get it, then took another and threw it 1/2 as far to give the other 2 dogs a chance.

53 Soooo... the setter wanted out and goodies this am and she and her big sister got out, Meds disguised as goodies and breakfast in that order. I turned off the light and went back to bed. I hear her (the setter) kick her kibble all over the dining room. I don't know why she does this. Some musta landed in the water bowl, cause the next thing I heard was her blowing bubbles and bobbing for kibble. The lab and I just rolled our eyes and went back to sleep.

And that's my story for today. And since the snow mostly melted and uncovered the backyard, I'll go clean up.

54 I wrote on here a while back about someone's outdoor cat getting snatched by a great horned owl. The winged monster carried the poor cat up high, dropped it, breaking its legs, and then proceeded to try to dine on it before the owners rescued it.

Poor thing had to be put down.

Large raptors, coyotes, foxes, and bobcats are now common where we live. Would never have an outdoor kitteh, and would definitely keep an eye on a small dog.

56 What the hell is wrong with people?

Some people think that cats and dogs don't mind the cold because they have fur. They can still freeze to death very easily, though. The cops around here have started ticketing cars left in parking lots with pets locked inside. We just got over a 16-day cold snap, and it doesn't take that long for a cat or dog to develop hypothermia even inside a parked car when the temp outside is 15 F or colder.

Posted by: Basement Cat at January 20, 2018 03:26 PM (3C9q2)

57 Little 16 y.o. Sandy kitty has regressed to being a kitten. At least, that's what she's pretending. Since we had to put her 14 y.o. sister down this past spring, she's gotten needier and more affectionate.

Considered getting another cat/kitten, but she's always been a queen bee, and I'm afraid she'd resent another "friend." We want to spoil her and let her enjoy however much time she has left.

Watching kittens play is better than television. And even when they get old, they still stalk each other and play fight. (Or in Sandy's case, go all alpha female and beat her sister into submission. Just because.)

84 Chicks...amirite?

I named my female cat after Coco Chanel because she's a fashionista-- loves to be brushed and combed and otherwise prettified. She has a turquoise collar with a bell-- the color sets off her dilute tortie coloring-- and she shakes her head every so often to make the bell ring just so any humans in the vicinity will notice her. And she likes to give herself manicures-- sharpens her claws on the cardboard cat scratcher and the cat tree much more often than my dude cat does.

On the other hand, maybe it's not so much chickness as French chic-ness.

It's a good idea to decide how much physical activity you want to expend with a dog, and get one that matches your level of oomph.

We have strict leash laws and signs on the lagoons and ponds warning of the possibilities of gators, but it seems every year someone lets their little dog roam the banks off-leash and "wham!" gator dinner. I don't understand stupid pet owners.

148 Funny story grammie how pets actually adopt their "owners".

My cat was five weeks old (or about) when she walked into my apartment after mewing in front of my door in the wee early hours of morning one day. She apparently climbed a flight of steps to chase crickets. Was going to take care of her for a bit but for a feral cat, she knew what the litter box was for. That sealed the deal and two years later is a chilled out lap cat.

I've known entire sled teams that have escaped and run off on their owners. So, just be aware that you're looking at a lot of exercise.

You might point out that the Eastern Coyote is a hybrid coyote/wolf/dog and as such is the result of human introduction of dogs, not just a wild species trying to adapt to us.

You aren't going to take them out anyway. You might be able to reduce their numbers, though.

That's where we got the late, great Spanky cat. She and her siblings had been fostered by a big, noisy family with a couple of dogs. Most chill kitten ever. However, when D'oh Boy rescued his dog (who loves cats), she loved nothing better than herding Harley and keeping her cornered. Poor Harley used to walk in our door, whimpering and looking sideways for Spanky to appear and go all boss on her.

192 The guy son's dog was rescued from told D'oh Boy's friend (who initially took her in and couldn't keep her) if he couldn't find someone to take her, he'd "just" shoot her.

She is the most sensitive, sweet pup ever. Worships our son. She also gets her feelings easily hurt if she's scolded. It breaks her heart.

The vet says from the best she can tell, she's a pit/boxer/something terrier mix. She's medium size and brindle. When we've kept her overnight when son has had to be gone, she cries at the door for a while, and then settles in. When he comes back to get her, she's the most overjoyed thing ever. Warms the heart. She loves everyone, even total strangers. I was walking her one day, and there were two golf carts stopped side by side with the occupants talking. She suddenly jumped into a cart and into a woman's lap, giving her kisses! So embarrassing.

I wasn't allowed to keep the shepherd mix of course.

220 The big excitement this week at my house was my 8 year old male cat Dexter, he actually got a mouse. Unfortunately, it was 4:30 am when he got it. He brought it promptly to Ms. navybrat, asleep at my side and dropped it right on her boobez.

Such a havoc followed as you would not believe. I am still splitting my sides remembering it.

Then the mouse got away.

221 Not pet related but just observing nature. I am having large numbers of Meadowlarks and Red Wing Blackbirds this winter. Haven't had either around here for at least 10 years.

223 I should get a critter at some point, once I'm in a fully stable situation. Until then I look for the ginger kitty that wanders around this part of the complex. I admit I was a little concerned for the furface what with the snow and freeze and all, but I saw him darting out of the area where my front door is earlier this afternoon.

...oh man, I'm pathetic.

I hated February in CA. I don't expect that to change.

225 It's been very cold where I live lately. The heat is cranked to keep the cats cozy (most are shorthairs) so I'm sleeping with an overhead fan on trying not to melt. Three of them have picked out their favorite heat vents and will literally race to claim them when the furnace kicks on. To avoid being climbed on when I'm eating, I usually eat standing up at the kitchen counter. There's a heat vent just to the right of "my spot". Forget walking over the sink without watching very carefully. Two of the cats take turns laying in front of that vent imitating Marilyn Monroe by getting their fur to ripple in the breeze. Disturbing one of them requires much groveling for absolution. It's annoying, but they're so darned cute!

226 Is the "same pet channel same pet time" popular enough for the youngsters to get it? I grew up watching Batman on TV, and of course the phrase is used quite a bit so maybe so. Discussing the Government shutdown with a young intern and mentioned that a previous one was the cause of Monica Lewinsky getting to know Bill Clinton. He of course responded Monica who? He did point out being born 3 years after the events might give him an excuse.

Lost my aussie Lucy last year about this time. She was a good sport especially when fetching snowballs.
