LOL: Manhattan DA Seizes Newsweek Servers As Part of "Long-Running" Probe Into Financial Improprieties

Police seized six thousand pounds of uncut clickbait, with a street value of twenty-two buck, from Newsweek's servers.

Newsweek itself is left to report on its own humiliation, because no one else cares enough to do so s.

Investigators for the Manhattan district attorney raided Newsweek's offices on Thursday, removing 18 computer servers as part of a long-running probe into the company’s finances, according to witnesses.

The investigators, armed with a search warrant, took photographs and gathered information about the servers and their capacity, according to sources close to the matter. Throughout the day, investigators were seen closely examining the equipment inside the server room.

At about 4 p.m., investigators removed servers and loaded them onto a cart and into the freight elevator of the company’s lower Manhattan offices. The servers they took were not being used, and Newsweek's working servers remain operational in the company's building.

...

A grand jury investigation of Newsweek Media Group, formerly known as IBT Media, has been ongoing for at least 17 months, according to a source familiar with the matter. The probe was likely looking at loans the company took out to purchase the servers.

...

"The company is stable and on a firm financial footing," said Dev Pragad, chief executive of Newsweek Media Group. "In December, we saw the largest audience and revenue numbers in our history." He declined to comment further.

One sign that a company is on firm financial footing is the spectacle of armed policemen wheeling your recently-bought computer equipment into custody.

The article mentions massive debts and laid-off workers -- I guess that's why Newsweek's clickbait game has been so Aziz Ansari-like it its insistence.

Hmmmm. The largest that you, the "new" Newsweek have had, or the largest that any publication named Newsweek has ever had? I know which I choose. Anyway, if it's the former, $0.50 is twice $0.25, but not something to crow about.

As to the largest audience, well, OJ's Bronco chase had a big audience too. I'm not sure that's something to be proud of.

25 @19 How embarrassing...I would be so embarrassed if I was part of Newsweek but these guys have no shame at all.
-------------------

A quote posted either here or over at Instapundit the other day suggested that the low level people actually are embarrassed by the shenanigans of their management. I imagine that they stick around because -

1.) It's Newsweek, and the name still has a tiny bit of prestige left, even if no one actually reads it anymore, and
2.) They're getting a paycheck, and they won't be if they quit.

Posted by: junior at January 20, 2018 04:42 PM (B8vdC)

26 Also, I'm curious. Are you guys still "The Deciders"? That sounds pretty sweet.

29 The servers they took were not being used, and Newsweek's working servers remain operational in the company's building.

++++

Now why would the cops be interested in taking the non-operational servers while leaving the operating servers behind? Because unlike what would happen if you or I were under investigation for tax shenanigans, they allowed Newsweek to backup their data onto new servers, and then switch their operation over to them. Only after Newsweek was able to make sure there would be no interruption to their "business", did the cops cart off the old servers.

Newsweek was bought by a stooge picked by the Democrat Party, because they were scared that Roger Ailes had said he might buy it (never confirmed) and they were desperate to keep a name brand news outlet from falling into some less reliably liberal hands.

EVERYONE who has owned Newsweek since then, including Sidney's estate, has lost incredible amounts of money trying to keep it going.

272 262 one of the reason I like this site so much is that it's one of the only places I haven't ever been banned.
----------------------
Back in the NR Disquis days I had some prick banning me constantly. He would ban people for their ideas. Now that NR is all FB the only ones posting are the pricks. Jonah and gang really suck. If not for Black or Davis I would never check in with them.

273 @250 I thought that cloning is an exact, bit by bit copy of the HD.
--------------------

It might be. I'd have to check up on the various computer terms. But *that* sort of thing takes a lot of time. As part of my job, I do quick and dirty copies between hard drives. A few hundred gigabytes can take anywhere between 2-4 hours, depending on whether you're copying big files or little files (and if there are any problems with the computer or drive that the files are being copied from). That's over either an Ethernet cable, or a Thunderbolt 3 cable (depending on the computer). Copying every last bit with precision is something that takes longer.

Depends on the cloner.
And what exactly you're looking for.
And the actual device is actual evidence.

281 >> I thought that cloning is an exact, bit by bit copy of
>> the HD.

Not usually. The trouble with that is to such a bit by bit copy, the disks have to be the same geometry. Otherwise the low level structures both partition info and file system would have to be different.

Most modern cloning programs are aware, and have to be aware, of the file systems they are copying, and thus know how to copy only used data. Sector by sector copying of partitions can be done for unknown file systems as well, I think.

I've got some cloning programs here, and there are several modes.

But to hold up in a court of law, you've got to have chain of custody preservation and all that.

Now, what they usually do is make copies of the original in varies way and the use the copies to investigate. That way, if they screw something up, they don't mess up the original.

But you're not going to put someone in jail based on only a copy. It's got to be the original.

282 Try the NY Strip. If you wonder if it's worth the extra cost vs. Choice, wonder no more.

The Prime sirloin was only $8.50/lb so I figured it was worth a try. Prime NY Strip was $12/lb

The Prime tenderloin was $27/lb. I can't justify that.

If you're on an Apple device, smart punctuation has been turned on, possibly as the result of a recent upgrade.

Yup, seriously.

Computer refreshes for a big corporation. I copy data from anywhere between 2-4 computers per day. Sometimes it goes pretty quick.

Sometimes it doesn't.

288 167 In December, we saw the largest audience and revenue numbers in our history

Aka, largest click bait hits. And thus, ad dollars.
Different definitions of audience and revenue now.
Posted by: Professor Chaos, Gumdrop Gorilla Channel at January 20, 2018 05:13 PM (UTaNm)

Q4 and Q2 are the big quarters for clicks. November and December in particular. So, I would not doubt they made more money in December via clicks than ever before.

The "largest audience" is squishy - does it include spiders and bots? Do they mean legit pageviews (no bots or spiders)? As for pageviews those stupid "click next" to see the Top 12 Porn Hubs articles would = 13 pageviews if someone views every "next". Unique views (each IP is a one-time unique view)?

If I had a valid subscription to comScore (which is about as close to real data as someone without access to their servers - ha! - for real hits data could get), I could guess what stat they are using for "largest audience".
