I know that you probably are fine with abortion at least to some degree, but you're at least able to separate your personal beliefs from an analysis of the president's actions and words.
The truth is, President Trump probably was all in on abortion until not too long ago, and I think his lovely and talented wife had a lot to do with that. She seems to have done amazing things for him, helping him to be a better man.

Years ago, when on other blogs, I'd see posters who would rather not vote than vote for someone who countenanced any form of abortion.
So if you had a D who was for abortion at anytime for any reason vs an R who was only against abortion after the second trimester and partial birth abortion, they'd sit the election out. They had rationalizations for this, naturally. It just struck me as foolishness.

Saw some lame-ass response from the Vatican on that -the award was not given for her pro-abortion activities.
As a practicing Catholic, I am ashamed. I guess certain tenets of the faith are up for interpretation or can be overlooked depending on other factors.

Shapiro frustrates me greatly. The guy is sharp, and does a good job preaching conservative principles to young people (and epically smacking down those that challenge him), but anything related to Trump seems to make him irrational and reactionary. Unlike most #Nevertrumpers, he at least still has actual beliefs and principles I mostly agree with, which is what makes it so infuriating.
Grant and Sherman had issues, but Lincoln was right to keep them, because they fought and believed in victory. Trump is the same, destroying the left (and GOPe) beyond anything I had realistically expected, and people like Shapiro still piss and moan about ankle-biters.

This is what frustrates me about guys like Sasse and other evangelical leader types. They do not seem to grasp that a man with a very bad past who speaks crudely can be used by God for wonderful things.
How many of them would have condemned Peter, or Sampson, or Jacob, or any of the many rascals, troublemakers, all men used mightily by God, in the Bible? This need for people to pass a certain behavior test or be ideal and holy to do a job is unreasonable and improper.
Its also dubious in terms of justification by faith and Christ's repeated example in the Bible of reaching out to people where they were and who they are instead of requiring them to be "good enough" for our standards.
The woman taken in adultery was an adulterer. Jesus defended her from the men and protected her, in love. These guys sound a lot more like the pharisees angry at him for hanging out with tax collectors and prostitutes than Jesus himself.

From any perspective, Cyrus truly was one of the most remarkable rulers of any time period. Shapiro frustrates me greatly. The guy is sharp, and does a good job preaching conservative principles to young people (and epically smacking down those that challenge him), but anything related to Trump seems to make him irrational and reactionary. Unlike most #Nevertrumpers, he at least still has actual beliefs and principles I mostly agree with, which is what makes it so infuriating.

This is all kabuki theater to try and manage public perceptions - but Schumer let Trump open with the invite, so he already looks subservient in coming. And then he made ridiculous demands like "Tom Cotton can't talk anymore!" as an excuse to blow this up. So it's already over, and Trump has won the first round.
There will be no actual negotiation at all, ever. There is going to be pain, they are going to see how Trump manages it (I think he will manage the pain very well) and then one side or the other will capitulate. And until they capitulate, the pain will continue.
I do see the possibility of a series of 30 day CR's taking place until the November election sorts things out. Because until that happens, nobody is gonna compromise on anything. That's just the state of political affairs we're living in now.

As is the case right now, by far the most important thing is that the issue be made, and appear to be, that the Dems are demanding amnesty and will stop at nothing to get it. While Trump/GOP's red line is border security and real immigration reform (key elements of RAISE).
Trump's tweets aren't going to do it, aren't doing it, and show their limits right now. If the stop-gap bills in fact continue through the campaign season, it is almost impossible to believe that GOP fecklessness will prevent this choice becoming crystallized to most voters. Leaving aside that most of the GOP is as hot for amnesty as the Dems (and Trump has never opposed DACA amnesty in principle).

Yes, but sometimes it takes a while for them to be processed. The best way to do it would be for him to open a U.S. Dollar savings account in his own bank. I have one. Any U.S. dollar checks I receive (say from selling old car parts), gets deposited in that account. I also have an account in a U.S. bank, owned by my home bank, and can do an online transfer from my USD savings account to that one, which has a credit/debit card I can use for purchases while in the USA.

In Ace's defense, this was a rather contentious primary. Some people went a little far...not just the NeverTrumpers, but some pro Trump people started reminding me of Luap Nor supporters! Still sad over losing some regulars around here, but I prefer being red pilled and seeing the masks off the GOPe. I had low expectations for Trump...couldn't listen to him for more than 30 seconds at a time prior to his election...but he's accomplished a lot, and listening to him now is great fun. He's not a lofty Reagan, but a charming as hole with a shit-eating grin that has your back.

So this is pretty accurate.
To be clear. This was a delegation from a country the woman is a politician, one of 10 people from her country. (Think like congressional delegation). They all were awarded the same thing as a group. She made a facebook video where she talked about having received the award for her work on abortion rights and saw it as an endorsement and a sign of how progressive the pope is as compared to others.
So I will concede the Vatican that this was not intended to be such an endorsement. However, when they made their statement about this they did not include a condemnation of this woman's work, nor ask that she take down her video claiming it was an endorsement.
Their PR flack is either not good at his job, or they are soft on this issue. Frank is not home at the moment - in Chile last I checked.
Also for non catholics, there are some huge things going on in the catholic church now. And more things coming this summer. There are already bishops who are criticizing this Pope and I suspect by the end of the year its going to get worse not better.
As an aside, Marian apparition our Lady of Akita (to those who are interested) talks about such turmoil coming about.

He was already leaning leftward at the end of the campaign, talking about universal healthcare and exceptions to deportation etc. He would have been Bill Clinton II, but they started right in the very first day with "tiny inauguration crowd" and riots. And that was after months of crazy in November and December.

After seeing YouTube speeches and such he does, I started watching some of his podcast/shows. He GRUDGINGLY gives Trump credit for successes, and exaggerates failures. Everything is spun as negatively as possible, with anything good presented as fleeting, someone forcing Trump to do the right thing, or Trump dumb stumbling open a correct solution but being embarrassing in the process and not to be trusted to do it again. Between that and the commercials every 10 minutes, I've stopped watching.

Trump had decades and millions of dollars in free product placement of his brand in the public mind so his brand was so firmly established in the public's mind that they weren't able to really take him down. His brand didn't stand for morality, it stood for iconoclasm, plain spoken truth, competence, and success. The country was in the middle of an 8 year drought of these qualities and he was running against Hillary who represented none of these things.
It was something you could begin to appreciate as a potential happening after he got the nomination. Early on, no way. Credit him with seeing that path AND having the nerve to stick to it.
If the country is going to continue to improve post trump - he needs to finish the destruction of the media's credibility and reduce greatly its position in the culture. Because there's not another brand out there strong enough to make it through after him.

Not hardly, from my POV. The Jewish aversion to Trump is that he doesn't give a crap about personal morality or community. It's visceral. Political conservative or liberal Jews all have this "Ick" reaction to Trump.
From my POV, traditional Jews are raised to give people a break about their personal transgressions. You are supposed to think better of people, if you can. I believe President Bush spoke on live feed to a rally as well. He was very, very strong on social issues like abortion. I have gone to Nicaragua a few times. The greenback circulates there about as much as their own currency, the cordoba. I could go to an ATM, stick in my Canadian debit card, and withdraw from checking account in either cordobas, or USD. And many stores, particularly the upscale ones serving turistas, have tills which seamlessly convert. Buy $95 worth of groceries, pay with a C-note, and get a mittfull of cordobas in change.

And that played out in interesting ways. Not many religious people realize that the whole idea of a Devil as a force working here on Earth against the Faithful, the concept of life as a constant struggle between the forces of Good and Evil, represented by Light and Darkness, in fact even the entire concept of Heaven and Hell, actually came from Zoroastrianism and its descendants, rather than from classical Judaism. That's why the OT has so little to say about any afterlife.
Christianity can easily be described as a fusion of the two traditions.

It was impossible to be both pro-life and Never Trump, full stop. If Never Trump had prevailed, Justice Scalia's replacement already would have been writing the majority position for actual infanticide.
While I disagree with Trump about the first trimester, I do admire his courage to attend the March for Life. No president before him had the balls and convictions. No doubt Never Trump, which wanted a president who would have promoted abortions almost all of us oppose, will find fault with his presentation. The gig is up for them. Never Trump has angered the entire political spectrum at this point. No one wants a piece of the True Conservatism they are selling.
