NFL Playoffs Ratings Plunge by 23 Million

Yup.

Yep, every single game was down, no matter how good the games were. And, remember, three of these games were highly competitive in the divisional round this year. Whereas last year only two of the games were competitive. Hell, three of the four windows even feature one of the same teams from last year. And yes, I know, the Cowboys and the Packers played last year and those are the two biggest fan base draws in the NFL, but even if you pull that game out the numbers for the other three games also declined double digits. (The three other games were down 15.3%, 10.4% and 5.6%)

Adding all these numbers up 120.8 million viewers watched the NFL divisional round playoffs in 2018 vs. 144.1 million who watched in 2017, a decline of 23.3 million total viewers.

It's bad enough that Stephen Smith says the NFL needs Tom Brady to get healthy and the Patriots to advance to the Super Bowl in order to avoid a total NFL ratings debacle.

"The NFL has had a rough season, we know why: the protests, the ratings, the negative publicity, all of this other stuff, things that had nothing to do with play on the field most of the time. It’s sullied this brand to some degree, and has obviously raised the eyebrows of folks inside and outside the NFL," Smith said during the lead-in to his Friday "First Take" broadcast.

He continued, "Now you have the Super Bowl coming up. You have a five-time Super Bowl champion, a league M.V.P. multiple times over, a guy that's obviously considered one of, if not the greatest, quarterbacks in the history of football. You remove him from the Super Bowl, and what do you have? Blake Bortles against Case Keenum or Nick Foles. Are you kidding me? The NFL needs Tom Brady desperately, there is no doubt about that, more so than ever before. He is holding the National Football League in the palm of his hands right now, because what’s the Super Bowl without him this year?"

On a personal note, this is the first year I am almost entirely NFL-free. Though I haven't really watched the NFL for a few years, I did occasionally check in with the Giants' standings or click on a sports site to see clips from some games.

This year, I did none of that. I was only vaguely aware that Giants were having a bad season, even by mid-season. I wasn't even full sure of that. When I mentioned this to a friend I used to watch the Giants with, I was vague about the Giants having a losing season -- I vaguely said "How about those Giants?" and waited for him to confirm or deny that they sucked - because I wasn't even sure they had a losing season. Heck, maybe they just had another mediocre season. (Spoiler alert: They did in fact have a very losing season.)

I did not know the playoffs started a couple of weeks ago until I saw Hot Air mention it Saturday afternoon.

I did not know who was playing in the playoffs. In prior years, I at least had some basic sense of the contenders, if not the just-barely-snuck-in-wildcards.

This year, I had no idea. The only teams I know for a fact are in it are the Patriots (saw a headline yesterday that Brady had injured his hand) and the Steelers. (I think on that last one -- I don't know if they won or not.)

No idea at all on the NFC side. Atlanta, maybe?

(No, I think Atlanta lost. First I thought Atlanta won because John Ekdahl is calling himself "Sacksonville" on Twitter, which I thought was a sarcastic, bitter insult to his team, which I figured must have gotten sacked a lot. Now I'm guessing that they did the sacking themselves, and so this is a rare not-sarcastic remark from Ekdahl.)

Oh- I did see a fleeing bit of footage of late-game touchdown in the Baltimore-New Orleans game -- Neil Cavuto played it-- so I guess I know, now that I bother to probe my memory, that Baltimore is in it. (But have they lost yet? I don't know!)

This year may be the first year I completely blow off the Super Bowl. Even if the Dreamy Tom Brady does start in it.

Maybe I also blew off last year's game; I forget. I know one recent year I didn't watch the first half, but tuned in for most of the second after I got the impression from social media and blog comments that it was a competitive game.

Anyway, not really feeling I'm missing anything. Looks like 23 million other people are not really missing anything along with me.

What about you guys? If you've stopped watching, what phase are you in? Are you in the phase I was in two years ago (watched some clips and recaps), last year (checked the paper occasionally, watched an occasional game digest on YouTube), or this year (only saw one football play by accident on Neil Cavuto)?

The comments I saw were all reminding them.

This year, I've not watched a single game. I've not checked any scores, I have no idea what's what, and I frankly do not miss it. NFL hasn't been about "football" for a long time IMO, and I think lots of people are feeling the same way.

He also stated the major sponsors are getting a lot of negative calls and losing business because of the players nonsense and the leagues lack of response.

Which is too bad.

May the whole thing crash down and people continue to burn their gear.

By the way, gear sales, a big income source for the NFL, is also down.

31 They NEED the Patriots for ratings? I'd argue the Patriots have ruined football for many fans (myself included) long before the kneeling. The last thing they NEED in the Super Bowl is the most hated team in the league yet again.

I've watched some football this year, down from my 4+ games weekly to 1. I've been a rabid fan for 40+ years. When you lose me, you've long lost the casual NFL fan.

33 The playoffs doing very poorly is a hopeful sign that maybe this year people will blow off the Superbowl more than last year. Last year everyone was "this game is starting to stink maybe I'll watch something else" but they all lined up to watch the big game.

This year, I hope it craters. Badly. That's really the only way the NFL might buy a clue.

I did see a fun report that the teams with the most kneeling knuckleheads also did the worst or didn't even make the playoffs.

Almost as if focusing on something other than the game hurts your play or something.

36 I'm not really sure why people think the Patriots need to win again to bring people back. Lack of parity is a bad thing in sports. The Patriots are one of the most disliked franchises in the NFL. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd say that the league is going to rig it for them anyway, because in their twisted logic patriots=good and will help cancel out the bad press they've been getting over the BLM crap.

I'm Over The Air (OTA) antenna and streaming. But I don't contribute any dollars or buy from the advertisers. But I've been watching the Philadelphia Eagles -- who have never won the Super Bowl. They won the year before it got called that, though. They had an incredible season with their AoS worthy QB. Till he got double-teamed at the knees by some thugs.

I've read that none of the teams with kneelers made it to the playoffs. I think there's an Eagle who's kind of outspoken, but it's being downplayed locally.

54 I occasionally watched some college football; that was it. Last year I occasionally watched NFL games I was interested in. This year, I did not. I have a lot of things competing for my time. If NFL games become less fun to watch, they fall off the time-sink cliff.

It didn't help them that I got a DVR for OTA broadcasts right about when the season started. NFL games are usually at a time when it is easy to watch them; other things I might want to watch (I finally got to see The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, which always seems to be in re-runs at about 3 AM) weren't, but now it doesn't matter.

Similarly for college football which seem to start earlier than I'd like. I set to record, and when I get up I watch the recording in progress. Due to skipping through commercials, by the time the game is over I'm caught up.

61 I missed the entire 2010-2011 season because Iraq. Except for one game. Giants, Eagles, and I think it was week 17. If the Giants punt the ball a) at least 25 yards, and b) out of bounds... they win and go to the playoffs.

So they punt the ball directly at the punt returner (blanking on his name... just woke up from a nap) and he returns it for a touchdown on the last play.

And that is how I came closest to firing my weapon in anger whilst deployed to a relatively safe FOB in Iraq.

62 I kinda want Jacksonville to get in, because I got to see Blake Bortles play back in his college days, and he was unbelievable back then. He's starting to get back a little of his old spark. Still, J-ville is not that marketable, and would be a disaster for ratings.

---------------------------
I always root for teams that have never won a SB and Vikings clearly qualify. Having said that, they have a peculiar problem similar to the Falcons - they are a one half team. They play the first half like true champions and then give up a ton of points in the second without really scoring themselves. Saw this play out against the Redskins (with 21 starters injured) and the Saints. If they go against the Pats they'd better have a plan for the second half or they will be this year's Falcons all over again.

76 Not watched a game. Checked the standings 3-4 times during the season and to see who made the playoffs. I have checked the playoff scores after the games end, but that is mostly hoping the Patriots lost and seeing that the traitorous Rams lost their playoff game. Every once in awhile I would feel the urge to turn on a game, but it passed pretty quickly. Enjoyed some College football when I could, but unfortunately I work Saturdays and the Noles actually had a truly shit season for once.

79 I'm a lifelong Patriots fan. But now I'm thinking I want the Pats to lose this weekend so Mr. Smith and ESPN will cry.

Lackluster SB ratings means lackluster ad revenue for the 2018-2019 season and ESPN is already suffering.

89 btw, apropos of nothing - worst NFL game of the year was that last cowboys - eagles game, where the cowboys "won" 6 - 0. It was like a contest where both sides were trying as hard as they could to lose, and eagles left their entire first string on the bench the whole game.

and the cowboys played as hard as they could against a second string team and only scored 6 points. pathetic.

93 Was never more than a casual observer/fan (well, maybe when I was a kid, for the home team). All NFL watching for years has been almost exclusively social - group of guys I've known since my yute. It's been a nice hub, venue for that purpose.

That disappeared when the Chargettes moved to LA. Only one gathering all season, to see their glorious failure to make the playoffs (last game).

One of the gang who always hosts a great SooperBowl party had to cancel this year, due to a family situation. Which nicely removes the conflict of not wanting to see the game, but also not wanting to miss the event.

96 A friend down the road hosts a Super Bowl party every year for 6 couples and their over-12 kids.
This year he's having an Unbowl event. He'll be showing some clips of old Redskin Super Bowl plays --- yeah, Riggins running over Dolphins, etc. But then we're watching the Knute Rockne movie with Reagan in it! (THat was an idea some moron here came up with, BTW.)
And they'll also run Remember the Titans because kids love it and the real-life championship was played here in SW VA and some of the peeps have actual ties to Andrew Lewis, the losing school.

Anyway, so far 5 out of the usual 6 invitees have responded favorably. Only one couple is wavering.

Of course, this is a very red area but still......

97 I've been in phase III since the very early 80's. Too many kids and too much stuff to do to forfeit a large chunk of the weekend. Also no cable to the house and much of Vermont is an over the air black hole, so not much way I could regularly watch even if I wanted to.

I haven't watched a game since week 2. I used to follow the Chiefs and the Cowboys. I don't know what precisely the Chiefs did, though the first memoriabilia burning video I saw was a KC fan, so I assume they knelt with their brethren.

And then I spent 36 hours holding my breath the friggin' Jerry Jones would be the voice of reason on MNF, and, nope. They all knelt to show solidarity with my enemies (both with regard to BLM, and as a response to Trump who was speaking for me on the matter).

This was easier it seemed when NASCAR was on, but once the various racing seasons ended, I found I didn't much miss the NFL.

I still run a yahoo pick league for a handful of friends, but all I don for that is dump the scores into a spreadsheet I designed years ago. I don't know if I'll continue it after this year, but I didn't want to shut it down abruptly as I run it as a favor to one of them.

People are mad at endless penalties (especially the pass interference calls that end up resulting in huge gain). Unfortunately, you can't watch the Vikings without also watching the team they are playing AND they go along with all the other SJW BS foisted on them by the NFL.

163 I happily stopped watching this year. Which was great because I was able to put up SO MANY SHELVES.

Seriously, tho, I watched maybe 30-45 minutes of NFL total, all year - and the only reason it was that high was it was on the TV Thanksgiving day when I visited the extended family.

What I DID watch was the wonderful college football play this year - I went to Alabama, my wife went to Georgia, so needless to say we both enjoyed what teams got to the National Championship Game. She wasn't happy about the ending, unfortunately.

175 I'm a Patriots fan, so my plan is to keep watching them until they fall back to mediocrity like everyone else. In other words, any day now and as soon as TB12 retires and the hoody coincidentally hangs it up the next day. I already don't watch any game that doesn't involve my team. If my team stinks, I won't bother with them either. The Patriots were the joke of the league for the first 30 years of my life, so I make no apologies for wringing every second of enjoyment out of their most-hated-status dynasty since 2001. But when that's over, I'm done. I quit Facebook 2 years ago, and that was even easier than I thought. Dropping the NFL will be a piece of cake, and give me one less reason to give ESPN a click every now and then.

It was a tipping point for the country, IMO. A bellwether of how serious people were about America. No one thought fans would do it. I'm proud people did. It was the red line in the sand, even for non-political people. And it tipped the balance.

May everyone continue to endure. Maybe we will eventually get real football back if we do.

When you cut the cable there's a lot of cool stuff you can buy with the savings. First thing I got was what you would consider the bargain basement Tivo -- called a PVR. With storage less than one dead president.

I start recording a football game that starts at 1 pm -- at 1 pm. D'uh. At three o'clock I start watching the recording. FF, FF, FF, FF. At about four o'clock, just as most games end, I catch up to realtime. One hour wasted vs three hours.

No commercials. Replay anything I want.

The cool stuff which is coming out for cable cutters is getting better every day. Including the ability to 'broadcast' OTA to multiple devices.

331 I have watched a few games when my Dad a who is a Super Dooper Broncos fan invites me over. He's a Korean war vet and he told me that he feels like the freedom to protest is why he served. But he also feels like it is totally fine not to watch people protesting if you don't want. It's still a free country he says.

My brothers served and they feel the same way as Dad.
Sometimes we get together and watch as a family, which is how we saw the Vikes (one brother is a Vikings fan) beat the Saints at the last minute. Great ending btw.

Since my dad is 83 and you never know how long you will have them I always go when he invites me over. It makes his day. But otherwise I don't even follow my own team anymore. Hubby gave all his Packer stuff away at the beginning of the year and hasn't watched a single minute of his team.

Sad.

This year, I had no interest in watching any other games, and usually the Lions are about a third of my total NFL time--because I occasionally like to watch teams that know what they are doing--especially during the Matt Millen experiment.

My plan was to watch the Lions until it became obvious that they were out. Well, they hung on all season until ... FRICKIN' BENGALS! (Or as they say in the AFC North: Been-gals)

No other games, and no playoffs, and I'm not going to watch the SB. Superbowl Sunday was on its way to being a national holiday, it seemed.

Now it should be called Goodell-screwed-the-pooch Sunday.

294 I thought one of the best arguments about Free Speech and the NFL, was why did they not kneel before kick-off on the field?

Yeah the timing was designed todisrespect the flag. Itkilled their stupid Muh Principles argument.

They tried damage control by running these crazy PSA's showing players somberly intoning their love for the military and hanging out with vets. It was so staged and phony. One of them starred Malcolm Jenkins who was a driver of the demand list presented to Goodell. Goodell promptly moved millions of the dollars earmarked for veteran charities and even susan komento the BLM NFLers.

Hey these are NFL players. Someone sticks a microphone in front of their face almost EVERY DAY during the season and definitely after every game. They have all have twitter and can get on the local news at the DROP of a hat. The have more ability to make a "statement" than anyone else in society.

Its not like they don't have any other way to get attention. They do it in the anthem to make clear that the whole thing is a giant FU to the COUNTRY. Ok then. Be that way. FU right back.

345 This year, I had no idea.

I don't know!) -Ace-

351 I'll probably watch the Superbowl just because that's where the new years ad campaigns are launched. Commercials are better than the game.

At halftime, I always change the channel to the Puppy Bowl o Animal Planet.

The Allstate Mayhem commercials have been pretty good this year. Did a nice job of building up some anticipation for what they were going to do.

I realize I've come to the End State of modern television. The commercials interest more than the programming does. Probably because they have better acting and far better writing.

418 2 points of hypocrisy

1) if you really care about black lives, you'll spend the 15 minutes necessary to research the Michael Brown case the Trayvon Martin case the Freddie gray case. 15 minutes to discover it wasn't police brutality. They say they care but they can't even do the basic research about these lives they pretend to care so much about.

2) if I thought the government was murdering my people in the streets do you really think my form of protest would be taking a knee during a song? How lame. If they really believe this they would quit the NFL and pick up a rifle. Posers likely compensating for all the interns they've abused in their career.

426 cubbies and cactus league - it amazes me how big a deal that Cactus League has become. When I was a kid in Phoenix (close to the Scottsdale line, under Camelback) the Cubs used to have winter practice in old run down wooden ball park over in Scottsdale, one that would embarrass most high school teams. But it was fun since my brother and I could ride our bikes over there and, behind center field, climb up into the scoring box and watch the practices from there. No one cared back then.

I must admit, though, my boycott/abandonment of the NFL has been coming for a few years now, and not so much because of the leftist politicization of the NFL, but because:

a) It had become like professional wrestling, with pre-determined outcomes based on popularity of the players involved. If I had to watch big dumb Payton Manning be awarded one more last-minute drive by the officials, I would have shat blood.

b) Hockey's a better game, with better human beings as participants. Go Red Wings.

437 "Lets all send her some candy to speed her recovery."

Actually, when a diabetic is having an attack of LOW blood sugar (insulin reaction), a piece of candy (something chewable like a chocolate bar) or a shot of orange juice is exactly what you SHOULD give them in order to boost the sugar level. It can happen if, for example, they take a shot of insulin in anticipation of a meal but get busy doing something else and forget to eat on time. My mom was a Type 2 diabetic and this happened to her several times that I can recall.

Same thing is happening to Star Wars. Burn it to the ground.

The Super Bowl is garbage. It is so hard to watch with all the promotion, constantly, and the stupid vulgar commercials reminding us we're idiots for watching it.

The halftime show takes forever and is a mess. Prince was great, phenmomenal. But the music industry has what? No acts! They wouldn't book Kid Rock, the progs running the networks wouldn't have that.

The Steelers hired a Rooney Rule guy in Mike Tomlin...dude has proven himself to be not the best coach. Big Ben and his crew bail his ass out all the time. It is hard to watch these games with Tomlin and his freaking out because he has no idea what to do. The Steelers won't can his ass.

It has lost all it's innocence and grandeur, for plastic trinkets and fake drama.

Watching some of those old games, they were really good, the announcers had character and could joke freely...Marv Albert!

And let's not get into the scripted feel of these games...sure is some weird shit that happens.

NFL HQ decides that the league needs to spend millions on social justice. I decide to tell the NFL to get bent.

585 Grump928(C): "Defense has too much advantage in Soccer. Modify the offsides rule and allow fast breaks and it would be better."

This.

Unless both teams have superb ball possession skills where crisp passing and designed plays are evident, the game is objectively boring. Scores of 1-0, while exciting in the sense that one screw-up can cost a game, waiting for that one and only screw-up for 90 minutes is tedious. Open it up so that people get opportunities to watch multiple scores rather than breathless replays of the singular exciting event of the game.

I'd even occasionally tolerate guys acting like their spines were removed after a love tap if the scoring was on the order of 7 - 5.

Bahr! You know them?

We (Penn State) won a lot of boring games back then by like 9-7 because we got three field goals.

They all counted as wins.

Sure, I knew them. They played for Neshaminy. A school with like ten times the enrollment of my school. The only team to beat us. Their record? Perfect. Ours? One loss.

I forget, because I got knocked out, but I think one of them put the ball up into my face and I was knocked out half the game. Protocol? Shit, go back in there son. I don't think I've ever been right since.

589 Soccer is a good game for fatherless children to play.
It requires no significant skill or practice at the most elementary level.
Hence, "soccer moms."

Basketball you can practice on your own or with neighborhood kids to develop skills.

Baseball? Nine times out of ten there's a dad around.
You have to have someone to work with you, to play catch with you, to pitch to you, etc.

591 I think it's perfect that Justin Timberlake is the halftime act. I feel like "Nipplegate" was a starting point for this circus aka the Super bowl. 595 Used to watch some NFL long ago, but God converted me, and I started reading the Bible and going to church. Found a good pastor that preached 2 good sermons, with a great halftime of snacks and hanging with other Christians in between.

I still like to watch the UW Huskies on Saturday, but this year was almost all night games, so I'd just watch them on TV, but go to bed at 10p, whether it was over or not, because I don't want to be nodding out in church.

By the way, I flew down to see the UW/Stanford game in Palo Alto, and the stadium looked only half-full. What? Then the band came out at halftime, and just trashed President Trump and spelled out USSR to the boos of their own fans.

But, so far, college football is politics-free. We're a little worried about Chip Kelly at Ucla, but we're happy we've got Chris Petersen. Go Huskies!

596 Completely NFL-free this year, and loving it. Don't even miss it. I decided to stop watching last season because of all the stupid protests, but broke down and watched a few games. Maybe some post-season? I still love watching college football, and some boxing and MMA stuff. But otherwise, watching movies and reading books with my wife. Very enjoyable. Unlike watching a bunch of unpatriotic dimwits disrespect the flag that gives them the freedom to become millionaires playing a children's game.

601 My interest in the NFL has been diminishing for years. The kneeling bs all but killed it.

I hate instant replay - make the call and move on. Delays kill momentum and alter the game - and are often inconclusive to boot. Combined with the increase in ridiculous and inconsistent penalties - esp rules re roughing the passer - introduce a level of randomness that undermines the (real-time) veracity of the game.

Most every rule change the last 30 years has been designed to speed the game and/or favor the passing game thereby diminishing the importance of a running game that keeps the ball in bounds. By far the largest effect has been to amplify and make glaringly obvious the abilities/incompetence of QBs. (Are the league wide differences in QB talent really that much greater than 30 or 40 years ago? Or just more obvious?) The ever increasing value of QBs justifies ever more ridiculous QB protection rules, diminishing the quality of the games.

I will watch random games when I feel like it and the playoffs - if I am not doing something else. But my days of making time to watch the NFL are over.

603 The scene Ace recounted of asking his friend "How about those Giants?" is one that must have happened tens of millions of times. This occurrence happened to me at least 3 times...twice regarding the Rams (my local team) and once regarding the Seahawks. The Seahawks fan is a guy with season tickets and shows up face painted wearing seahawk colors only and this year he sold his tickets to the highest bidder and stayed home. He watched Seahawks games only on TV until it was clear they were not going to make it and then just turned off the NFL altogether.

605 This has been the first season where I've chosen to watch games because I thought they'd be good, rather than because my team was playing or because my buddies wanted to watch the Super Bowl. I've watched less football this year than the last few, but what I saw was better than normal.

Going out of my way to watch the Baltimore-New Orleans playoff and the Eagles-Rams game late in the regular season were totally worth it. Much better than watching Buffalo get stomped by the Patriots yet again.

606 I know this is thoroughly willowed, but I don't care. Esports is really stepping its game up. There's a new thing called Overwatch League and it is awesome. I fully expect this to spur next year's Worlds (League of Legends championship) and International (Dota 2 championship) to even greater heights.

608 I watched half of the Kansas City Chiefs this season, and approached the playoffs with a mixed sense of dread and apathy. True to form, Kansas City blew a big lead and lost. And with the end of their season went the rest of my interest in the NFL this season. I'm a veteran. I do take it personally that these spoiled, narcissistic turds claim the mantle of patriotism through protest at the expense of the fans who pay their hard earned money to go be "entertained" by them. It's not patriotic to jump on a bandwagon. It's not patriotic to bite the hand that feeds you. Burn it all to the ground. I hope the damn thing fails.

I think it's more the fact that I've been weaned off NFL and now look back on spending hours watching football as a silly thing, than it is Kapernick.
