Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | So Much Winning You'll Be Tired of Winning: Walmart Announces Bonuses, Hikes to Starting Wage Due to Tax Reform
One of the big flaws in the U.S. corporate income tax is that it encourages companies to shift revenue, profit, operations, investment and employment to other countries. The Republicans say a big benefit of their tax reform plan is that it would stop companies from doing that. But the Republicans are wrong. Their plan would do a bit — but not enough — to discourage American companies from continuing to use tax gimmicks to avoid U.S. taxes by pretending that they earn their profits in other countries. And it wouldn’t do much to discourage companies from shifting their investment, employment and operations out of the United States, or giving up their U.S. residence through a corporate ownership inversion. In fact, the Republican plan could make it easier. Everyone on both sides of the aisle agrees that the U.S. corporate tax system needs to be reformed, because the current worldwide system encourages a lot of economically wasteful tax avoidance. We need a fair tax system that will raise significant revenue without harming American businesses or the U.S. economy. It’s not an easy task. But while the Republican plan unveiled Thursday would lower the corporate rate to 20% from 35% and establish a territorial tax system, it wouldn’t do much to stop the tax-avoidance gimmicks. Why? Because there would still be an incentive to shift profits to countries that have a tax rate that’s even lower. A few weeks ago, House Speaker Paul Ryan argued that the 20% rate would have prevented an American company, Assurant, from moving its legal headquarters to Bermuda, which doesn’t impose any corporate income tax at all. But the last I checked, 20% is higher than 0%. The Trump-Ryan-Brady plan wouldn’t eliminate the incentive for U.S. companies to shift their operations or to shift their profits using creative transfer pricing techniques. Nearly every tax expert who’s studied this issue agrees that the problem identified by Ryan would remain even after his bill is approved.Well check this, stupid motherfucker: Assurant just announced it would in fact now remain in the US, despite liberal media "experts" claiming otherwise.
Technology companies will thrive from the hundreds of billions in cash parked outside the U.S. coming into the country this year, according to one Wall Street firm. "With the Trump administration and Beltway imposing a 15.5% tax on [repatriated] cash earnings vs. the previous 35% tax rate we expect a surge of overseas cash to come back into the US with large cap tech being the clear beneficiary for 2018 and beyond," Daniel Ives, head of technology research at GBH Insights, wrote in a note to clients Thursday. Ives estimates large U.S. technology companies have $550 billion to $600 billion parked overseas. He predicts they will repatriate $300 billion to $400 billion in 2018, with Apple representing $200 billion of that amount. All this may be contributing to the New Era of High Spirits:

More evidence of inflation. More money circulating at a faster rate through an overheated economy. Higher costs mean higher prices. The Federal Reserve will be raising interest rates to cool an overheated economy. The Federal Deficit will go up because of higher cost of carrying twenty trillion dollars in debts. I was just having a similar discussion with a friend last night about Trump and Churchill. My friend is one of those Trump Curious kind of guys, loves what he has been doing but is put off by his "lack of presidential demeanor". I pointed out that many people had the same complaint about Churchill when he went against the popular belief about appeasing Hitler and all he did was save the world. I think when we look back on the Trump years and we see how close the forces of international leftism and globalism came to taking control of this country and frankly the western world, Trump will be seen in a similar light. Trump's poll numbers (Polls are for STRIPPERS!!!) aren't going up in proportion with the economy for the simple fact that average American still gets their news from the standard sources. They only see the negative. They likely don't know about all the bonuses that have been given out thus far. "Bit of a danger sign there, though: With the economy doing so well, and economic sentiment flying high, Trump should be doing better, poll-wise."
A big part of this is that NONE of the media (with the exception of Fox Business) are covering this, they are trying to pretend that the growth isn't happening, the economy isn't doing much of anything. Therefore the news isn't widespread outside of people like us, yet, and it isn't getting a chance to affect political attitudes because a lot of ordinary people don't see it. YET. and that's the big problem for the left, and the media. They can hide the news for a short while, but the economy eventually trickles into almost everyone's lives, and they begin to realize "hey, things really are getting better, even though my tv isn't talking about it" So that means that Trump is in for a long, slow gain, not a short sharp one. perhaps the country is so hyperpartisan that the old rule, that a strong economy redounds to the benefit of the party in power, no longer holds.
Nah I explained this before. Under an administration that is actively hostile toward business, kept stacking more and more regulations, and passed massive expenses on companies (ACA in all its ways), businesses were understandably nervous and very hesitant to expand, hire, or take risks of any kind. From year to year there was no way of knowing what the next target was going to be, or if you'd be in the sights of the weaponized federal agencies. So they had money, but not will to use it. It would have been unwise to investors and unsafe for owners. With that burden lifted, and under a president that is extremely friendly to business, removing regulations, and lightening expense burdens on companies... they're finally breaking free with a huge sigh of relief. Its like living under a potential avalanche, with the guy in charge throwing firecrackers at it. Now the avalanche isn't there and the guy in charge isn't trying to trigger it. Just that stress being gone is incredibly cheering and liberating. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon They usually buy a huge chunk of land and park a Sam's next to a 24 hour Super Wal Mart. Those that don't need to buy for a platoon, (264 count rolls of tp), shop at Wal Mart. Also, Sam's doesn't sell everything Wal Mart does. I did not renew my membership, because there didn't seem to be any point. Most things are just as inexpensive and sometimes even less inexpensive at Walmart. Snap reactions to Sam's Club closings:
A) I've got the impression that Costco has been eating their lunch in the big-box market B) Wal-Mart has been pushing hard for a while now to transition their logistics network and online retail into a viable competitor for Amazon. "Big-box" stores don't fit into the same niche, and are just a drain on the logistic capabilities they want to utilize in other ways. As promised, companies will begin repatriating hundreds of billions of dollars which had been parked outside of America, permanently, due to favorable treatment of that money so long as it remained outside the US.
Yeah they were making money, they could have afforded to give raises, etc, it was just a really bad business decision because there wasn't consumer activity and the instability of the Obama economy just couldn't justify it. So they invested and parked money until such time they could see reasonable chance of stability and a business friendly environment. In other words, these guys have been sitting on a lot of resources, ready for a chance to hire, invest, expand, and take risks and are now going to do it. Are doing it. And they expect big returns, so they're passing that on to employees Because as someone smarter than me said here a few weeks back: we're moving from an employer market into an employee market and you want to keep the good, trained employees where they are, not looking for work elsewhere. Investment in the US is safer than anywhere else in the world, so tax rates don't have to be lower than the rest of the world, just close enough that the safety out-weighs the marginally higher taxes.
Would you build a manufacturing plant in Afghanistan or the US? I think the answer is US, at almost any tax rate. Would the insurance company spend money to move to the Bahamas? Apparently not at a marginally higher tax rate of 21%. Posted by: Mike S at January 11, 2018 03:51 PM (Gyg4r) 386

Posted by: Puddin Head at January 11, 2018 03:50 PM ----------- Having a big family, I have done most of my shopping at Costco for years (and still do, even though not all live at home anymore). I've never had to buy 6 loaves of bread - just one, although I rarely buy any. I like that I can get roasting chickens for $.99/pound (two chickens per pack, but if I don't need to make two, they are individually packed so I can freeze one). They have great prices on dairy and produce, for the most part (if you know your prices), and the turnover is very swift so the stuff is very fresh. And I never buy those huge boxes of junk food, although it is certainly present in the stores. Posted by: bluebell at January 11, 2018 03:54 PM (kNasr) 419

246 "As promised, companies will begin repatriating hundreds of billions of dollars which had been parked outside of America, permanently, due to favorable treatment of that money so long as it remained outside the US."
--------- Since when has money been going elsewhere? Since 2008? My theory is that companies and individuals feared Obama trying to relieve them of their cash if it remained within reach. They may say otherwise but actions speak louder than words. Posted by: Decaf at January 11, 2018 03:31 PM (/3+Sg) As I understand it, the money hasn't been "going elsewhere". It's money US companies made overseas. It got taxed overseas. If that money was to come back to the US (to hire more people, build more stores, etc), it would have been taxed again. Companies that could afford to let it sit, did so. They banked on the tax rate coming down at some point. Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at January 11, 2018 03:59 PM (di1hb) 445

I've become sort of philosophical about Trump and elections. I think he WILL win re-election in 2020, but I can also see the possibility that he might not need to except as a personal validation thingy.
He ran on what has been described as a three legged stool platform, namely Tax reform Immigration reform Regulation Reform I can see a path forward where by 2020, he will have accomplished what he ran on. Everything after that is purely for the Republican party. If by then the Republicans haven't reformed themselves to be Trump when Trump is no longer there, another 4 years won't matter much. I think he's already a VERY consequential President, so honestly, if worst comes to worse because of the decadence and decay of the US population, he will still go down as a unique success story. @WINNING Posted by: Dougf at January 11, 2018 04:49 PM (Ju9Vv) 475

But the last I checked, 20% is higher than 0%. The Trump-Ryan-Brady plan wouldn't eliminate the incentive for U.S. companies to shift their operations or to shift their profits using creative transfer pricing techniques.
The last time I checked, 20% is less than most of the foreign corporate rates - which these companies will be subject to if they remain in their foreign locations. That was kind of the point to dropping the US rate down to 20%. Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at January 11, 2018 06:03 PM (3NjrP) 478
