Republican Governor of Missouri Admits to 2015 Infidelity

He'd done campaign appearances outside his state, so I guess maybe he was considering one day running for national office.

I don't know if this is disqualifying anymore.

Bill Clinton raped Juanita Broaddrick, and the media seemed pretty understanding about all that.

This story does have a twist -- a claim the governor blackmailed the woman with a budoir photo should she ever reveal the affair.

He denies that part of it.

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens and his wife, Sheena Greitens, issued an extraordinary statement late Wednesday acknowledging that he had an extramarital affair in the past and that the couple "has dealt with this together honestly and privately."

The statement came as a St. Louis television station aired a segment alleging that, during that affair, Greitens took a compromising photograph of the woman and threatened to publicize it if she exposed him. The statement from Greitens and his wife didn’t address that part of the allegation.

Greitens' attorney, James F. Bennett, issued a statement denying the blackmail allegation.

I gotta tell you, I just don't care about this bullshit any more. In fact, I never really did care about this bullshit per se-- I cared about the double standard the media imposed on Republicans.

People are sinful by nature and are going to sin. If I don't care what a CEO is doing with his mistress, so long as he's doing the job I actually care about, which is growing the company I own stock in, and not being faithful to his wife-- what's my interest here?

This is a transactional relationship and should be thought of as such.

We ain't partners, we ain't brothers, and we ain't friends, as both Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy said in 48 Hrs. This is a purely self-interested relationship.

I don't care about this guy's morals. I never cared about any of their morals.

I just cared about the hypocrisy and double-standard of treating Republican indiscretions differently from, say, Clinton's rape.

Now I know the NeverTrump cucks will say, "You brute! You're changing your core beliefs due to Trump!"

And I reply, "No, you quivering phony cuckold wannabe priests. To the extent I pretended to be outraged by Clinton's affairs, and I didn't pretend all that hard, if you check the record, I only cared about fairness in how these things were treated."

I didn't care where Clinton put his dick -- I only cared about the lawbreaking and the double-standards.

If you guys, who I strongly suspect privately hold a much more French, much more cosmopolitique view of infidelity than you fulminate publicly, want to still pretend you give a shit about these immoral guns-for-hire hired only for a specific job, a job which does not include "being my own personal moral exemplar," you are welcome to keep living in Pretendistan, for the sake of proving the two allegedly "conservative" agenda points you still pretend to believe in.

But I never really believed in politicians -- a class scarcely more reputable than lawyers or reporters -- as being moral paragons who would lead me soul into the purifying light, and I strongly suspect you didn't, and don't, either.

To the extent Trump has changed anything along these lines, it's that he's liberated me from the burden of pretending to care about things I most assuredly do not give a wet shit about and never have given a wet shit about.

But if the #MuhPrinciples crowd still feels the need to keep up appearances, in spite of the Rape-Sized precedent set by Clinton, then I suppose tilting at this particular windmill is as good as a time-wasting mission for you to dissipate your excess energies harmlessly as any other.

The blackmail angle, if true -- and I don't think we even have an on-the-record source claiming it is -- would be a more serious concern.

But then: the power of precedent. Check it out.

6 This is kinda an important part of the atty's statement:

'We have been asked repeatedly by reputable news outlets why we believe this nearly three-year-old news story is coming out now. The latest reporting has finally disclosed that the reporting was being driven by a "source" who is the former Democrat state party chairman and who apparently has not spoken to the person in question. This goes a long way to explaining what is going on - this is a political hit piece."

Oh.

As with everything else, when confronted with even the basic facts, vs. the extravagant nonsense the "press" feeds them, they were generally just silent and dumbfounded. And assuredly would say exactly the same thing, a day later, to someone else.

29 A man or a woman is not measured by their private, personal lives but how they perform as public actors. It may have been the right thing to overlook Bill C's little ventures into rape and so forth, but to judge him for his service as President. When one clears one's mind and does so ... Ewww!

32 Ok, I take your point on the Nevertrumpers and Libs. I understand where you are coming from.

My point is still "People show you who they are." Someone who is likely to 'bend the rules and play around' in one area has crossed a psychological barrier where they might well do it in others, imo.

It does not mean they cannot be good thinkers and valuable in that way (see Newt Gingrich.) However, we do elect at least a president on the idea that he will do what is right when it really counts. Not what is convenient or even accepted.

Do I have trouble with Trump's infidelities? Yes. On the other hand, the pickings were somewhat slim on the ground, and thus far he has shown himself to do what is right as far as running the country. He has done damn fine so far, especially considering the climate. FAR FAR FAR better than we have come to expect from the last two republican presidents and worlds and away better than the democratic ones.

58 Not as if people have cared all that much about the affairs themselves when you get down to it. Yeah its the moral flaw of these guys. But its always an aspect that is beyond the affair that is the scandalous part.

Bill Clinton - Rape and abuse of power to sleep with his employees.

Client Number 9 - He was caught in a prostitution sting.

Governor Sanford - He disappeared to engage in his affair and then had a press conference where he talked about it like he was a Freshmen girl in love for the first time.

Posted by: buzzion at January 11, 2018 08:54 PM (lKs2v)

59 Look, it is really simple. I treat politicians as if they were my employees. Do I care about what church they go to? Whether they drink and fuck around in their off hours? Nope. Their youthful indiscretions? Nope.

Now, one of my employees is fucking an intern in the office, while he is supposed to be working, and gets caught up in a sexual harassment scandal, that distracts him from his work, then yeah, I fucking care. I care a lot. Fire his ass.

That just the thing - I don't worship politicians. I don't want to be like them. They aren't my glorious leader, paragon of virtue. They ARE my employees. And they'd better well remember that.

Trump, for his many, many faults, acts like I'm his best customer. He promises stuff, and he delivers. To some extent I don't even care HOW he gets his job done - if he needs to troll the competition, say outrageous things, deal with the dems, whatever. Did he deliver?

That is the difference between the dems and us. How a politician seems, what he says, how he makes you feel, that is ALL dems care about. results? They couldn't give a shit about results.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 11, 2018 08:54 PM (QDnY+)

Big time. ANd Clinton's refusal to resign in the face of his clear guilt was a huge step down the shithole spiral for this nation. EVERYONE thought that Clinton had to resign after the truth of the situation became clear. Even his people at the WHite House and even the MFM turds were all positive that he had no other choice. But Clinton refused to resign. Instead, he took off for Martha's Vineyard and used Chelsea as a press shield (the first time the Clintons had let Chelsea be part of the coverage, BTW).

And then Clinton just held out. ANd he won. Sure, he was a pariah for some years but he was left in office and the GOP then had an excuse to never go after a dem President, again - always citing the delusional "impeachement backlash" which left the poor GOP with nothing but the White House and control of both Houses of Congress in 2001.

And then Barky took all this to a new, unheard of in America, level.

94 I disagree with you, Ace.

The moral character of our elected leaders is of paramount importance.

Clinton's infidelities, as well as the double standards imposed by the media, were key factors in my eventual departure from left liberalism.

You can add also Willie Brown's and Gavin Newsom's infidelities.

If they will fvck over their spouses, can you imagine what depravities they would impose on us? Have imposed on us?

96 This is a good point ace is bringing up. The only reason that liberals bring up morality is because they think conservative prudishness can be used as a tool to dupe and manipulate them into not supporting good candidates.

It's similar to "Trump colluded with Russians. You hate them Russkies, don't you?" and "If you were really a Christian, you'd support open borders, sanctuary cities and Obamacare". They are just slimy, deceptive motherf*ckers. Tommy Flanagans one and all.

103 Yeah, I tend to be a little disappointed when a politician I like is revealed to have had an affair, but I, too, am much more incensed at the partisan double standard.

Even worse is when Democrats engage in actual law-breaking to cover up their infidelities.

The worst, though, IMO, is when other Republicans pile on to enforce that same double standard. Republicans who still to this day refer to underage-hooker aficionado Bob Menendez as "my esteemed colleague" while simultaneously blasting Roy Moore as "utterly unfit for this dignified, august body we call The Senate"; that's the worst part of any Republican sex scandal, IMO.

104 I guess it goes to the quest for heroes. Back in the day sports stars were held up as heroes, the press keeping their secrets. That fell apart ~1970ish

Do we still need heroes, and if so where do we find them?

114 Judge not lest thou be judged. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. If we are to sneak around like Peeping Toms and find out that our leaders are human beings, and then shout it from the rooftops, that is our loss. Judge them for their service. I am sure that most of our heroes of the past were human beings, and thus not perfect. There are few who cannot be brought down by bringing out their failings.

Now, the idea of blackmailing leaders (SCOTUS judges, Senators, Presidents?) to do the bidding of the swamp, that is a different thing. Until our right to privacy is reinstated, this will be a serious concern. If the AI and corrupt swamp creatures take over, we will lose it all. That appears to be the direction we are heading in.

Of course if the "perps" make things public, bye bye blackmail opportunity.

Clinton's misbehavior (as opposed to his criminal perjury) was absolutely reckless and stupid, for the blackmail reason. Incredibly irresponsible. Just one reason he was one of our worst presidents - yet still is often deemed "uh, not so bad" even by reasonable people.

JFK, as I recall, took things to a bad B-movie script level. Messing around with a known East German intel asset, at the WH. At the height of the Cold War. Reckless doesn't begin to describe it.

I know a LOT of men AND women that have done that at least once in their marriage (I didn't, but my ex-wife did), and sometimes you can fix it by fessing up, and sometimes you can't.

265 250 comments in. Just got here so back on topic for me.

I used to expect that so called leaders would be better than me. Experience hath taught that they are worse, and I set a mediocre bar.

To top it off, there's the galling level of hypocrisy it takes to tell us what "our" values are, especially the mantra of "that's not who we are" etc.

Toss in the whaddaboutism and the media bias, and the posturing and they've all gotten my contempt the old fashioned way; they've earned it.

JFK, as I recall, took things to a bad B-movie script level. Messing around with a known East German intel asset, at the WH. At the height of the Cold War. Reckless doesn't begin to describe it.

LBJ was just as bad, but as far as I know, and I could be wrong, he wasn't doing spies and Mafia molls like JFK. Mostly secretaries and his wife's "friends" and other female acquaintances.

280 I feel differently than you do, Ace. I do think the governor's behavior shows a foolish lack of self-control. Yeah, locker room banter about pussies and tits, I know it goes on, but photographing one's mistress in that position in a state of undress shows a certain intentionality and planning. I don't give a shit frankly how his wife feels about it: I don't think highly of enablers.

I get that men think their sexual natures are so strong and difficult to control. What separates the unwise from the wise is the ability to harness and control urges. I mean, we are all born shitting our britches, Ace. That is human nature, the urge to crap and all. Why bother controlling ourselves since it's a strong, uncontrollable urge? There is no difference between the diaper-loading toddler and the adult who cheats on his or her spouse: lack of self-control. Stop giving passes to people who won't practice self-control out of respect for themselves and others. This whole scenario sums Up societal issues.

Damn it, expect more from people. Quit lowering standards.

286 While I take your point about the hypocrisy, I'm still going to condemn the infidelity. Adultery is corrosive to the family. I'm approaching retirement, so most of this is behind me, but the adultery-inspired divorces I've seen friends go through are deeply painful. The left-behind women, and especially the daughters are basicly ruined from that point forward. Little girls grow up thinking that their dads rode in on these great white horses and swept their moms off their feet. When it turns out that Dad is a cad, that little girl can't fully commit to their future husband.

I get it that some marriages just fail (been there, done that). But if you're in a marriage that you've concluded is doomed, then do everyone a favor and man (or woman) up and get out before you go looking for a "little strange".

287 My take on this is that Eric Greitens is either too stupid or too impulsive to take seriously. He responded to a casual flirtation, had a brief affair, and allegedly brought this woman to his home to engage in light bondage (someone he didn't know well!). He did this in 2015 when he was gearing up for a gubernatorial campaign. Tremendously reckless behavior. If he also snapped a photo of her, he's a nasty creep as well.

He'll survive in office or fall based on how much comes out, how he handles the public relations, and whether the state GOP will stand by him.

He can kiss higher office goodbye. Why would anyone trust this goofball has decent judgement? It remains to be seen if he can get reelected. Sen. David Vitter got reelected once in Louisiana.

I'm not going to take up a pitchfork and torch against this idiot, but if he sends me a campaign letter looking for donations I'm going to send it back telling him to get lost.

Posted by: Monika at January 11, 2018 11:36 PM (SJphO)

290 Heh. I used to tell folks back in the late 90's that I didn't care if Al and Bill got it on in the Oval Office; that didn't matter. In the Monica Lewinsky case is was an issue of quid-pro-quo, to which Clinton lied about the affair under oath, losing his license to practice law.

Posted by: jim at January 12, 2018 12:32 AM (gjGvH)

291 I also never cared about where Bill Clinton put his dick.

I DID care about him doing it in the Oval Office, because it was an insult to the American people who have treated his office with respect.

I also think that if you lie to the mother or father of your child repeatedly, then I have no reason to believe that you will be honest in your dealings with me.

Infidelity means not being faithful....ie LYING.

Posted by: DFCtomm at January 12, 2018 07:08 AM (50gG9)

294 Disagree.

Infidelity counts, because if they'll cheat on their spouse -- who they love and need -- then they'll cheat you.

Advice: If you have a cheater who works for you, and you need them because of their talents or competency, then you SHOULD care. And watch them like a hawk.
