Tucker Carlson Rips Trump For Saying He "Trusts" Democrats on Immigration and Would Sign Any Immigration Bill That's Put Before Him

Good shot-across-the-bow from Tucker Carlson.

"It was a weird scene in Washington today," Carlson began. "President Trump, you'll remember, ran for office promising to fix immigration, make good deals and in general do a better job than the corrupt incompetent lawmakers he said were wrecking the country. And he was right, they were wrecking the country."

"And yet today in a remarkable twist, the president held a televised meeting with the very swamp creatures he once denounced," he explained. "He told them he trusted them to craft immigration policy without his input."

"Then he suggested he'd be willing to accept any deal they produce even a bad one," Carlson said, clearly displeased.

"At one point the president agreed with Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California that it would be wise to handle the question of DACA separately before negotiating any meaningful reform of our broken and dysfunctional immigration system," he added.

"Key allies very close to the president on immigration told us this afternoon they were shocked by what they saw in that meeting," Carlson continued. "It was a completely different Donald Trump from the one we watched on the campaign trail just two years ago."

"These are the same people the president now says he trusts to write the immigration bill," he added, "the one he’ll sign no matter what it says."

"So what was the point of running for president?" Carlson asked rhetorically.

I often worry about Trump making some deal with Nancy and Chuck on immigration before; so far, he hasn't. But he keeps talking like he can/will at any moment.

I think Steve Bannon might have counterbalanced the open-borders RINOs in Trump's circle on this point; with Bannon gone, who knows who has Trump's ear.

Now I can see explanations for why Trump sounds dovish here:

For one thing, he clearly didn't know what Dianne Feinstein meant by a "clean bill" on DACA. He thought it meant "not containing anything irrelevant to the topic of immigration," like the debt celing or whatever. She meant just give us DACA and no border security, no wall, no etc.

Another reason for talking about a "bill of love" or whatever is, possibly, tactical. The Democrats are ginning themselves up to shut the government down to win their Replacement Population ideal of DACA with no wall and no increased enforcement. (And I can't wait to watch the media do a complete 180 on government shutdowns-- now they're good and noble!)

The Democrats also seem to be thinking about refusing to pass needed spending authorizations for the military.

Given that circumstance, I could see Trump (to the extent one imputes forethought to him at all) preparing the battlespace to make himself seem to be the reasonable one, open to fair compromise, and the Democrats as the intransigent Replacement Population zealots.

Still, I do have big worries. DACA is bad enough, but to get DACA and no concessions as far as chain migration, the Visa lottery, the wall, etc.? That would be total capitulation -- and, as Tucker Carlson says, the Democrats would have absolutely no incentive whatsoever to negotiate on those topics again.

One small thing I find amusement in, though, is the NeverTrump cucks who are open-borders types laughing that now Trump is going to screw us dummies over.

Well, okay, maybe, but if he does: Isn't that exactly what the Corporate "Conservative" class was promising anyway? Wasn't that their exact plan if they foisted Low-Energy Jeb or Little Marco on us?

They seem to be whining: If we were going to have DACA, like we always wanted, we might has well have had Maaaarco doing it!

Ah, but I disagree: If I'm going to lose, why shouldn't the cucks lose, too? Why shouldn't they be miserable? Why should they get to keep fucking over the rest of the party and getting to remain in the cat-bird seat?

So honestly, if we're going to get fucked over with DACA, I'd rather it be with Senator Little Marco, just because it upsets the crybaby Butthurt Battallion so much.

Maybe next time 'round you'll bother listening to the concerns and complaints of Republicans who don't live inside of DC, and whose money doesn't come from donations from the hinterlands or billionaire's play-money accounts.

That said, if Trump sells us out on this, I'm mostly off the team.

This is NEGOTIATIONS. They OPENED with a "Clean Bill". Which means they won't get one, because Trump and (some) of the Dems know you start with the extreme position and negotiate to what you want.

Trump will get his Wall - partial real, partial virtual using Drones, etc. And Dems will get a path to Green Cards (NOT citizenship) for any DACAs who have NO criminal records.

And the issue will go away, hating Dems who no longer have it to beat up Trump.

BTW, have you seen any Dems attacking the Tax Bill on TV these past two weeks? Remember how they were going to use the Tax Bill to "take back the Senate?" Nope, they saw the polling after it passed and realized how the trend was going - so they shut up.

That's why the little throw-away comment at Camp David last weekend was so discouraging (no support for challenges to GOP incumbents).

Seriously? Has the WH legislative shop done any head-counting lately on Trump's priority agenda items, esp. immigration?

He did add that he needs more GOP of the sort that will support his agenda. But there's no use in throwing away perceived worry or pressure by GOP incumbents that they'll eff up and end up being primaried, with WH backing.

I think Trump is smart enough to know that if he caves on this, he's done. And I think Republicans are smart enough to know that 2018 will be a bloodbath if they give the store away to Dems on this as well. So they won't outright cave. That is political suicide and even the RINOiest RINOs understand that much.

but

I also think Trump and the GOPe will fall for some sort of "future border security" in exchange for instant amnesty bullshit deal. The GOP is Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. They know damn well Lucy will yank it away, but they just can't help themselves. And Trump just wants a deal and he figures, well we get "border security" so that will make the rubes happy, fuck it, we have a deal.

So what we end up with is instant citizenship for "the kids" (who are 40 years old in some cases), an extra 500 ICE agents to be hired in 2019, a few drones on the border and funding for 100 miles of a "barrier" to be built in 2020, with a promise to build the other 1500 miles of "barrier" sometime in 202never.

76 I guess I'm not what you would call a true believer, and I'm surprised at the number of folks here who seem to be.

Trump is going to do a lot of things we like. He is also likely to do some things we don't like. However, on balance, he does things that he feels help this country be everything it can be, without running it down or bowing to enemies or giving away the farm. He is honest and straightforward about most things, and he is serious when he needs to be and silly when he doesn't.

I don't think we can hold him to a higher standard than we held Reagan, can we?

He isn't going to give the country away to the commies, so sit tight and see where this goes.

Either way, he's a damned sight better than Hilary, and for that we need to be somewhat grateful.

Just wish the WH would realize this may be their best opportunity for pushing their max immigration agenda, that they hold the cards, and they should not just aim for actual legislative wins but also to raise the political profile of the issue even further, and force the Dems to tighten their death-embrace of illegals.

"Sanctuary" lawlessness, "dreamers", unsecure border, massive legal migration - these things are all unpopular (even in many electorally "blue" states). for any DACAs who have NO criminal records.

And the issue will go away, hating Dems who no longer have it to beat up Trump.

BTW, have you seen any Dems attacking the Tax Bill on TV these past
two weeks? Remember how they were going to use the Tax Bill to "take
back the Senate?" Nope, they saw the polling after it passed and
realized how the trend was going - so they shut up.

#Winning

Deed, not words.

Did anyone actually READ "Art of the Deal?"

#Resist was all the other side would say. So Trump got them in an unfamiliar circumstance in the meeting, talked softly, and they started sounding like human beings for a while. Trump owned the room. Even Wolf Blitzer said something nice until the bosses told him to knock it off.

The nonsense from the Wolff book is gone, are you going to believe that book or your own eyes? Trump let them talk and then reiterated he requires his same details as before, a wall, an end to chain migration, and ending the lottery.

Again, did ANYONE actually read Trump's book?

This was my big worry before the convention and then the election. So far, I think he has surprised the hell out of me.

Maybe before, he did not think in terms of hardball politics but of dealmaking. I think what he has been through this past year, painful though it might have been for him, opened his eyes. He's no dope and a quick learner.

I'll support him up until the moment he sells out. And I don't think he will. In any case, what use is there in worrying?

147 The thing is, if the conservatives took a stand, the country would be behind them.

Problem is, there is almost no one in DC to make the argument.

If they said, "only productive members of society." and a policy similar to most of the rest of the world, then how do you argue with that?

If you received benefits, then how is that good for the actual citizens? And remember, barry expanded benefits to just about half the country and most illegals. So how are they going to prop up the tax base, or whatever if they are living off the dole?

The Left's argument is nonesense - we need these people to do out jobs and pay our taxes, and we want the ones who are on the dole.

This is an easy argument to refute, and it would eliminate 60% of daca. But no one in DC makes it. The libertarians have a couple voices in DC, and the media, but those assholes want anarchy. Where are the sane voices arguing for even what they have in Europe, with limitations of benefits and no chain migration?

Let's be honest, until he ran for President in 2016 (Trump had been sort of running for President since like the late 80's) he had never really said a word about cracking down on illegal immigration. In fact, he criticized Romney for being too harsh on illegal immigrants with self-deportation.

211 There's no way any deal of any sort for "dreamers" is NOT a path to citizenship. As noted by others, the courts will see to that. And, in that case, they will probably be correct. Only way to block this would be for the "deal" to make "dreamers" non-immigrant visa holders, in perpetuity. I don't see that happening, even though it would be less vulnerable to (sane, lawful) court action.

Just applying the requirements from the old, illegal DACA EO should in fact reduce the numbers substantially, if commentary from knowledgeable immigration types is correct. Don't even have to add new limits.

But this is the only train in the station, in terms of leverage for Trump to force Dems to agree to his big immigration items. That's why I say load up the table with demands, politicize and popularize them, don't settle for less than a lopsided win on any DACA deal, and continue to push the rest. And any DACA deal must be phased, and slaved to milestones in barrier construction, full implementation of new policies, etc. All of Trump's demands up front, DACA in phases, later.

I've noticed Trump does this all the time, he did it in the campaign, one day one policy, the next day the exact opposite, I thought it was a little crazy if you will, but it might be he just does it to lower the noise of the opposition for a while. But a clean DACA would be a total sellout.

But this is the reason why the repubs in congress should have been legislating like hell the first two years with a majority, but I guess we all know by now they have a MINO - majority in name only.

One nice thing about President Trump: people who bet against what he has the balls to do, usually lose big. Israel is among the bigger beneficiaries of that mentality, and we should start handling illegals like they do.

I am always amazed at my leftist friends' use of illegals to do their menial labor, and then they lecture me about what a horrid person I must be to want to deport them. Seems a bit of a conflict of interest, since they are getting something for nearly nothing.

I have been known to cut my own lawn and clean my own toilets, but according to them, I am keeping perfectly good illegals from the slush fund I am supposed to be paying them.

And then they want the government to pay for all of their "services," including free medical care, housing, etc.

Which they will get, so long as they steal an identity and social security number and game the system.

So, enabled, by the folks who think, somehow they are entitled.

Does not compute.

Let's get real. Back then, Tricky Dick was trying to exploit a Sino-Soviet rift in order to salvage the Vietnam debacle, and save the Republic of (South) Vietnam.

Blame the Lefty Congress for throwing in the towel after Watergate, or blame Tricky Dick for covering up Watergate, or blame overzealous Republican operatives for not realizing the 1972 election was in the bag, but nobody has THAT much foresight.

Go forward to Uncle Ron. He sure dropped the ball on the Southern Border, but back in 1986, the Evil Empire was much more pressing.

Today? Immigration IS the pressing issue, and Donald gets that even if the Bushyrovie GOP dolts still do not.

What if he knows the Republicans in the House and Senate are not gonna agree on anything without him being involved that would be something he would sign in the first place?

238 Tuesday's TV thing was just that, TV thing. Trump had to make it appear - since he's the one that ended DACA - that he wanted congress to do it's job and it's his job to lead them.

I think he knows that if he signs "anything" presented to him, it will mean one of two things:

1 - he got what he wanted (wall, end chain immigration visa lotter) or;
2 - squish Rs went the Ds. In this case, he says I tried and you need to vote these guys out because Trump will be around another 2 years and if you want comprehensive immigration, then give me folks who will do what I want.

His comment on the wall, i.e., "where it's possible" is an attempt to show he understands the issue. It's a throwaway line to seem reasonable.

But more importantly, it shows the country that no matter what Mueller is horse shitting today, Trump is still in charge and has all the power of the presidency.

Trump very well may want to be liked the glitter elites, but he understands that they only like him when he does what they want AND he doesn't want to go down in history as the guy who backed out of his biggest campaign promise only to screw his base. It's the latter of these two that will keep Trump from folding like a cheap suit.

Posted by: Steve_in_SoCal at January 10, 2018 06:18 PM (bB4HN)

Dude ... "W" went for Amnesty. The GOPe only backed down when the same Tea Party wave that got them in started bitching.

Which explains a couple things. One - why the GOPe decided to shit-can the Tea Party. And Two - why no matter what the GOPe does ... there'll be GOPe Apologists long on faith and short on memory.

Posted by: ScoggDog at January 10, 2018 06:23 PM (fiGNd)

292 "It comes from being locked up in GOPe's basement for the past thirty years where we've only been feed Kaboom and the improvement in morale due to the beatings has been just around the corner for decades."

Amen. And sometimes when we're winning at life and eating our fill of Trix and Frosted Flakes and have left the Kaboom far behind, we're gonna find ourselves - God help us! - kinda missing that losing taste.

But it'll pass. I promise.

297 I am always amazed at my leftist friends' use of illegals to do their menial labor, and then they lecture me about what a horrid person I must be to want to deport them.

Its akin to their treatment of all minorities, and partly why they despise Asians. They can't abuse and take advantage of Asians on the whole, they aren't useful mascots to show virtue or dependable voters. The left generally likes minorities as a theoretical thing, the noble savage they don't have to actually associate with, but not actually in person as friends or co workers.

That's not universal of course. But often true with white urbanite lefties in gated communities with only the gardener and nanny to interact with.

I haven't known a lot of black guys. A few west Africans, a really crazy creative but wonderful guy who designed clothes, and a huge guy who played football in school. Not a lot in Salem really.

329 Negotiation Horde, negotiation! No one has agreed to anything yet. They are presently establishing their strength and their power. They are working to minimize if not neutralize their weaknesses. Because this is politics - and they need the support of the voters - they are testing the waters with their base to confirm the negotiables and the non-negotiables. Trump did the hour long live feed to:

1. Document that he is anything but enfeebled
2. To establish his position
3. Set his supporter's and opponent's positions

It is what he does. What he has done throughout his adult life and professional career. And he's good at it.

Posted by: CatchThirtyThr33 at January 10, 2018 06:35 PM (GtBcI)

362 "He thought it meant "not containing anything irrelevant to the topic of immigration," like the debt celing or whatever. She meant just give us DACA and no border security, no wall, no etc." ha ha - Trump knew exactly what she meant, and he corrected her, to what that ACTUALLY meant.

So many times Trump has outwitted and outlasted his adversaries. Part of negotiating is both pounding the table, then giving in, then reversing course. Make them desperate to grab a deal.

And here is what the deal will be - DACA, chain migration reduced but probably not eliminated, no lottery, and $20 billion for border security to spend as Trump decides. Which means a fucking wall. And I can live with that.

There's a reason these people are pundits and not actually out there doing real things.

Tucker should know better. He actually came around on Trump pretty early. Not super early, but a lot earlier than most did. He actually paid attention and noticed something was happening.

He should have read Trump's book, though.

378 3-dime chess: Trump links his ink to a bi-partisan DACA deal. What are the odds they come up with one? Is possible but a low risk for Trump who seemed more interested in getting the room into a more flexible position than coming up with a policy, leading by listening yet controlling the agenda, sympathetic to DACA yet acknowledging security, showing them how to deal. It was all process, not substance but it puts pressure on the Dems to deal now that he has modeled the virtue of dealing.

Here's the way I think of Trump:

It seems like there's more to him than he lets on.

He's surprised me, before--and I'm don't just mean in gadget ways, but in substantive ways.

Whenever you dread what he's going to do, it might be that part in action.

I think Rush is right. Don't take Trump literally. He's going to say what he needs to maneuver--even if that's something you wish he hadn't said. And who knows, maybe he'll be right.

Trump, regardless of what he will do, was STILL the best chance to get a wall.

445 Plus side, if Trump does sign DACA as the Dems want we get to laugh when he tries to blame " illegal votes" for losing the popular vote in 16 and likely getting landslides in 20. This is a "Read my lips, no new taxes" moment.

I hope I am wrong but this just feels like another in a long stream of right (Or at least right of center) politicians thinking they can do the impossible and the grabbing the hot coals won't burn them.

I guess we'll see, but if Trump gives the Dems what they want on promises of future concession to arrive at some point in the future he may find out what being politically on an island feels like.

I've never seen a political set-up like this.

Doing this sort of thing doesn't require being a 12-dimensional chessmaster or a Machiavellian genius. It mostly requires a strong understanding of human nature, the drive to make changing the world worthwhile, and several cubic-fucktons of self-confidence to carry it through.

486 DACA is a complicated issue...

-The US (as I do ) donates to many third world countries to help children.
-Trainloads of 'unaccompanied' minors (including some over 18 yo) streamed into the country and were bused to undisclosed locations within the US by the Obama administration..
- Trump did recently sign an EO to stop human trafficking in the US...
-Many children have spent some years in the US and really have no home to go back to if deported. (much like former residents of Detroit)
- Trump has named DACA an "Act of Love"...
-Trump maintains his stance on chain immigration, deporting criminal illegal immigrants, building the wall ect... I don't know hot it happened but many illegals are even veterans???

Posted by: Voter Dude at January 10, 2018 07:18 PM (U5Xeq)

Yes, deal making is an art and it's Trump's table and it's Trump's deal, and he's clearing the table and openly stating that he's willing to negotiate anything in good faith.

He's placing the onus on Congress to bring something totes "reasonable" and not too "insane" to the table, - but this won't happen and he's counting on it. This is because they're all political scum with shit-tons of political baggage and a lust for chicanery.

They will leave Trump with no choice but to assume the dominate stance and negotiate accordingly. "Hmm, and we need to get shit done now, so will it be bullshit legislation or executive order?" Nobody in Congress will be able to say they weren't given an opportunity to act nor a fair shake.

499 Trump is placing this issue in the congress - he's asking his base to put the pressure on them. He said as much in the meeting. He knows what kind of issue this is,and how quickly it can motivate people... he's going to need motivation in 2018.

He's waiting - if congress does hash out a shit deal of amnesty now amnesty forever... he will simply say "This need security which means it needs a wall, needs end of chain migration"

The monkey wrench will be thrown... but I don't think it gets that far. The public will kick in before that. Trump's meeting in front of cameras set another shot - this won't be some backroom deal that nobody reads.

Posted by: Reality Man at January 10, 2018 09:43 PM (Ch0fq)

500 Let's go over some specifics
Daca Kids In
Wall Built
Chain Migration End

Democrats want Daca kids, but can not survive their own base if the wall gets built and chain migration ends.

Republicans - well the wall was a promise and while Daca kids was to, I think Trump survives his base if he gets a wall with chain migration - especially with a roaring economy.

He downlplayed "security" yesterday - left it vague for a reason, because when he loads it up the dems will scoff and leave the table - and they will look unreasonable and crazy - fighting for what... no wall? It will be crystal clear at that point... Trump was willing to deal, willing to take care of the the Daca kids - just wanted to protect the country - and democrats said no.

Posted by: The Gipper Lives at January 10, 2018 10:55 PM (Ndje9)

503 The telling exchange was Lindsay Graham's...It was obvious to me that Lindsay was saying we could vote for DACA amnesty if the President was willing not to primary them. All the time the President was saying give me a bill I can live with - wall, chain migration and lottery - and I will back you on DACA amnesty.

Those republicans in that room, as pro-illegal as some of them are - are settled on giving Trump a big portion of the wall and huge concessions on chain migration. it is obvious.

Posted by: doug at January 11, 2018 01:06 AM (89il5)

505 "He told them he trusted them to craft immigration policy without his input."

I don't think that's what he said. I don't think he ever said he would have no input. He only said he would sign whatever was produced. I took that to mean he would have a LOT of input.

Trump is fighting a two-front war here. First, he destroys the false narrative that he is an idiot. Clearly, he is directing the discussions and making his expectations clear. Second, he IS putting forth the image of the person open to compromise; DACA for the wall (which all those bitching Democrats are already on record as supporting). Though he will have to fight ANOTHER battle getting his message out, the Democrats shut the government down at their own peril.

Trump is hearing the opposing views and offering them this for that... if they turn it down, thinking THEY still dictate terms, it will cost them.

Oh... and if the Democrats shut down the government, they shut down Mueller's investigation.

506 I'm reminded of the Japanese movie Yojimbo. In order to clear out the corruption of the small town he visited, the wandering swordsman played both sides of a local gang war against each other to inevitably force a clash in which both sides lost and their grip on the town lost.

If this is Trump's strategy and he causes the GOPe and the Dems to collapse on themselves, he might truly be able to drain this swamp.
