Where "Sunday on the Island..." shows the leisure of the upper classes and well-off, the second, "Bathers at Asnieres", is supposed to be the leisure of the lower, working classes. It's supposed to show, according to some, the divide of the Classes by showing how and where they spend their free-time. Only the upper-classes can afford to be ferried to the nicer, shadier island, and it became a status symbol. The poorer are forced to be in the sun. On the far right, one of the youths is calling over to the Island. If you put the two works together, the backgrounds almost match.

I am going to kinda agree, and kinda disagree. I think that anyone who joins the US Military for a complete enlistment successfully should receive in exchange a US Citizenship. Yes, anyone. That includes people who came here illegally.
I am okay with that. Saying you have to be just a potato peeler and no speeding tickets is just piling on.
My wife, who is a legal immigrant, is most annoyed by the illegal immigrant because of the fact that at your naturalization ceremony, you have to take an oath that you will take up arms to defend this country. As a natural born citizen, I didn't have to do that (though I did.) An illegal immigrant never has to make that pledge. So - if they enlist (meeting all requirements) and successfully complete - a citizenship is a just reward.

There are places in FL that are heavily into the "birth tourism" scam too. There was a fairly well-publicized case a few years ago when some middle-eastern millionaire had his preggo wife, who was having a high-risk pregnancy with lots of complications, fly into Miami right before her due date to give birth in a hospital there. They wanted the kid to have dual citizenship, and they also wanted first-class medical care at U.S. taxpayer expense, which is what they got. They left the U.S. after the birth without paying any of the hospital bills.
Some FL politico, may have been Mario Rubio, made some public comments about how this type of taxpayer-ripoff has been going on for years but nobody ever does anything about it (isn't that YOUR job, Mario?), but of course, nothing was done.

Is this method called Pointalist or something? Its a pleasing technique in that it gives the "eye' something to think about as all the points of color assimilate into coherent picture. The implied detail that leaves are on the trees or the building in the background has windows and other textures lets you brain fill in the gaps where the detail is missing.

The Pe-8, Russia's only long range bomber in WWII, bombed Berlin in 1941, but that was just a one time morale boosting bombing. It was mostly used to bomb German-held territory in Russia & eastern Europe.

And when they did join up illegally and we found out, we discharged them and turned everything over to INS. I personally can't say if they were deported or not, but we did notify the Feds and gave them everything we had.

The ship's captain had wanted to ask the harbormaster to unload his ship quickly, but he was prevented from calling attention to his cargo by Army security regulations, so it sat in the harbor unguarded for several days as many other ships were unloaded first.
The Luftwaffe attack should have been opposed by fighters, but the American command had pulled out all of the air support because they didn't think the Luftwaffe was a threat in that part of Italy anymore. So the attack was unopposed, a pure turkey shoot for the German pilots.
Men were pulled from the harbor suffering horrible blistering burns and many died from lung burns. Doctors had no idea what they were treating and the army forbid telling any of them what had actually happened because the information was classified. So almost none of the victims received proper treatment in time, and most died.

I have two (2) things, but I shall discuss only one now so that I have content for the future.
I got taken on a base tour by the commandant of the Lancieri di Montebello, an ancient cavalry unit which today runs both mounted and armored cavalry. (He showed us all the horse stuff, not so much the armored shooty stuff). The HQ is strictly British equestian, it's amazing.
Anyway, this unit has about the most tradition in the Italian army, going back to I think the 1870s. Took its name from a battle to overthrow the Austro-Hungarians back in '59.
So, the cool thing I learned: when the Nazi effort in Italy was collapsing they were going to infest Rome and fight a nasty defensive battle there. My guide tells me that the Lancieri were the first Italian unit to openly fight the Nazis. I saw the front lawn at the Hippodrome where they got together and said hells no. And they and another unit did keep the Nazis out of Rome.

Cassino was not too far from our house, and an easy day trip.
Hell, we sometimes went to the chinese restaurant there in town for dinner, after Mrs VIA hit the shoe outlet about half way there.
So yeh...standing at the Abby, one can understand the commanding view of the plain and valleys, as well as the tactical significance of the location.
And Mrs VIA's Great Uncle was part of the bomber crews which bombed the area.
Yet I tend to believe the local lore that the Germans did not actually use the Abby proper as is often stated.

That's not just a valid question, its an absolutely necessary discussion for the US government to undertake. Under President Trump, judges have decided their power and jurisdiction is infinite.
They aren't just deciding they can rule on any decision or policy, but they can rule on things that were undone. Its absolutely ridiculous and there has got to be a rollback on this before things get ugly.
The Supreme Court has to make a ruling on this, not the individual decisions but upon the limits of judicial power.

Long ago perhaps. I was a field recruiter in the late 80s. At that time, such was a non-waiverable disqualifier. I expect it still is. The reason for that is it is essentially coercion.

I agree, for the executive to continually bow to the courts on every ruling, no matter how outrageous or idiotic, means the courts are supreme and the other branches are subordinate to them in all matters.

In the summer of 2008 my wife and I went to Chicago on a meetup-trip. She had worked there for a number of years in the 90s and I had grownup with relatives there that we visited often.
I wanted to see the Shedd Aquarium as I'd loved it as a kid back in the 50s/60s along with the Museum of Science and Industry. The Shedd was not as I remembered it and had a depressing PC-Green ambiance. Never got to the other.
The best thing was a coffee mug I got there that is 24 oz and shaped just as I like. It's still my morning mug but the cost of the visit was not worth one good mug.

My Zone Supervisor once spent a day with an applicant from inner city B'more, basically blueprinting, and scripting him.
They both came back into the office, where the Zone Sup said he was good to go, and start paperwork.
I told him he would be the first CRF in years to actually put someone in the Navy, as I was going to put him under the Zone Sups ID as Recruiter of Record.
The young man didn't process.

The judicial branch has basically ruled the United States for the last 60 years. Before that, the Supreme Court was mainly looked to for things like interstate railway disputes, not significant cultural issues.
It's basically impossible to remove judges, about the only check to their power is appointing the "right" ones.
The Founders screwed up this branch of government which is why people like Thomas Jefferson had major issues with it, they saw what a tyranny it could become.

I had a boss who was a former clerk from the 9th Circuit. Yale grad. Brain-dead son of a white-shoe lawyer on Wall Street who paid endowments to get his son into Yale. Didn't believe in legal precedent and stare decisis. Every issue was a matter of opinion and not established law.

And for these judges, this is as high as they get, they're never going to the supreme court. So there's no professional pressure to control their urges, either. Even when their decisions are vacated as in "that was so stupid we're all going to pretend it never happened," they just don't care.

Yep, that's exactly what it is. The courts are pretty powerless... unless nobody ever does anything to check them and simply obeys everything without the slightest question.
Congress has the power to limit judicial action and control these federal courts, but chooses not to. They have the constitutional authority to limit what judges can and cannot rule on.
The problem is... judges cannot rule on most of the stuff they are trying to now with President Trump. They have no constitutional authority to tell the president he cannot implement immigration law. They have no constitutional authority to tell him that he cannot rescind a previous president's order.
So they are already overstepping the lawful boundaries of their authority. How do you stop that?
Ignoring it is one option, simply say "they have no authority to make such a call, so who cares what they say?"
Another is for the Supreme Court to stomp on them and issue another "you cannot rule on this" order in such a way that it applies to any other similar such order.
Ultimately there's going to be a showdown, these guys are forcing a constitutional crisis by overstepping their jurisdiction and assuming powers they are not granted.

Story time! Freshman year of college (reminder, I attended religious colleges for undergrad), our NT survey prof had everyone fill out a form saying which version of the Bible did they use primarily. He then assigned everyone verses to learn in the other version. Why? Because then you had to learn them, not just repeat them by rote.

The easiest way to determine if a Bible is heretical is to turn to Isaiah 7:14. If it says "a young woman will conceive" it is heretical. If it says "a virgin will conceive" it's good to go. So, KJV, NASB, ESV, NIV are ok, RSV is heretical. Although I'm sure Gail Riplinger would disagree.

They would then be fired, lawsuits would commence, and then the Supreme Court would intervene and likely punish the Executive Branch for ignoring the judicial branch until everything had been settled by them.

Ultimately there's going to be a showdown, these guys are forcing a constitutional crisis by overstepping their jurisdiction and assuming powers they are not granted.

the problem is that letting this wind through the court, takes WAY too much time... especially to the Supremes.
They still have not heard ONE word on the Travel Ban stuff... and Judges ruled against the latest travel ban, even though the Supremes had told them whatever they ruled was moot.
But I agree, Congress IS a large part of the problem... they spend so much of their time on things they are NOT supposed to do (Fed takeover of Health care) that they don't do what they ARE supposed to do (spending bills and reigning in the power of Judges).

If it says "a virgin will conceive" it's good to go. So, KJV, NASB, ESV,

The Message is not a translation. It is a paraphrase for easy reading. Sometimes I'll read it to get the contemporary sense of a passage, but never as a translation.

Why? Because for all of the bluster and Tweeting and the "yuge" and "bigly" and insults Donald Trump is an intelligent, careful person. He follows procedures and over the past year he has been winning by doing so. I do not see any value in doing "smash-and-crash" and risking everything. I do not see Donald Trump giving any of his political foes one opening to use on him and that is all I can see that will result from the path you are suggesting.

Yes, the King James is very poetic and is wonderful for passages such as Psalm 23. However, the translation from the Greek is not the best or closest. For instance, the word "greyhound" appears in the King James, but is translated something completely different in all subsequent translations. (I can't remember the actual word). It was simply poorly translated.

Yes. We want translations closer to the original languages, not paraphrases. Translators should not be commentators. How can the reader know what the writer (Moses, Isaiah, Paul) meant, if the translator doesn't keep to the original as close as possible?
