I really kinda wanted to know what were the top five selling handguns for 2017. Why does everything have to be a video? And why does the first 30 seconds of that video have to consist of 2 assholes trying to be funny? I guess i'll just wonder what those 5 gun were. It won't make any difference in the end.

So it's (left to right), Mosin-Nagant, M-1 Garand, w Lee-Enfields (?), then two scary semi-autos with the thing that goes up (no idea, FAL?), then the PPsh-41. Can someone fill in the blanks?
"PPsh" stands for pistolyet pulyemot shpagina, Shpagin machine pistol. Being the commie place it was, in the USSR very few things had names other than codes or numbers (excluding nicknames they might pick up). Only exceptions were aircraft (design bureau chiefs' names were used - Yakovlev, Tupolev, etc.) and small arms. Thus the PPsh-41, named for its designer Gerogiy Shpagin, and the famous AK-47 (avtomata Kalashnikova-47), named for its famous designer, who died not that long ago. Here is the webcast link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PWu3BRxn60 This is the first launch of 2018, and will be from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral. Zuma is a classified payload for the U.S. Government. Usually classified payloads are identified as Air Force, Navy, National Reconnaissance Office, or whatever. What's unusual about Zuma is that nobody is claiming responsibility for it. Zuma was originally supposed to be launched from Pad 39A in November, but SpaceX discovered a problem with a payload fairing on another rocket and took this one back to the hangar for further investigation. In the meantime, Pad 40 came back online and SpaceX wanted to convert 39A for the Falcon Heavy, so this rocket was moved to Pad 40. The launch is scheduled for 8:00 pm EST. MisHum, Riverside (I think) is a "good" county - you might actually get a carry permit there. Most of coastal/urban CA is "may issue", not "shall issue", which ends up being "rarely issue".
Naturally there's a stalled court case (Peruta vs. Gore, SD Sheriff). First 3-judge panel ruled in favor of Peruta - with a lengthy masterful bit of verbiage that basically lifted much of Heller, thus daring the 9th to reconsider the ruling and reverse it, thus giving SCOTUS the finger. To which the 9th said "hold my kombucha" and promptly did so, of course. There are some more infuriating angles to the case, but this isn't the place. So for now, "may issue" continues to essentially deny most people the right to carry in CA. Just one of many cases hanging in the 9th on gun rights. If SCOTUS ever gets around to reasserting the "S" part of its title, there might be hope. But as of now the circuits have "over-ruled" them on Heller, in effect. The picture of the gun room looks nice, but I wonder if the walls are anything stronger than concrete blocks? If it's not something tougher, I would think someone could get into it in a few minutes with a sledge hammer.

Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at January 07, 2018 07:07 PM (WQ3tJ) Agree 100%, this is what I use. I got a squeeze bottle of something called "MILITEC-1" for Christmas. It's a lube and is supposed to work at extreme temperatures. Last week I slathered up my 1911 with it and went to the range. It was -2F that day, and I left the 1911 laying out on the table to cold soak while I shot something else. When I got around to shooting it, it cycled just fine. This was with considerably more lube than I would normally use. I've had problems with other lubricants getting too thick at low temps and causing problems. This stuff seemed to be OK. I've never had that problem with CLP, either, which is one of the reasons I like it. Posted by: Iowa Bob at January 07, 2018 07:29 PM (DNH+H) 64
fortunately for me, my wife knows *exactly* what our firearms are worth, and how many we got at a bargain price as well, when people sold things w/o due diligence on their part.
there is a local toy store that has a bad rep fro ripping people off when they price out things people want to sell, but, every so often, when we stop off to check their used rack (the only reason to deal with these asshats) there will be something there worth more than what they're selling it for. we got an AR Sales M1-A that way, 'bout $700, IIRC. One outstanding pick-up from a gun forum was using ChoreBoy copper scouring pads. Tear off a bit, wrap around old brush of appropriate caliber. Scrubs lead out of revolver barrels very effectively (make sure to use the 100% copper ones, not copper-coated steel). Highly recommend this for anyone with stubborn leading. Also in rifle barrels, if you use lead (I don't). Retired SEAL buddy gave me a bunch of FrogLube stuff. Works well, smell reminds of me of some candy or gum from childhood. Non-toxic. Probably should use it most of the time, no point in exposing yourself to the strong stuff more than necessary. This house we moved into last Feb belonged to a big game hunter. In the upstairs storage room is not a safe, unfortunately, but a nice gun cabinet that has plenty of room for all our guns. It's really nice to have a good rack (behave!) for the long guns. The cabinet locks but a crow bar would pop it right open. Keeps kids out though.
The house also has a small wet bar with a wine fridge. When my cute niece heard this she said, wow, storage for booze AND guns--that house is perfect for Aunt stace! Posted by: stace at January 07, 2018 07:38 PM (6HFDU) 92
Battlefield Vegas, I think, probably other places with full auto rentals. And yes $$$ for ammo is the issue.
Ran into one of the organizers/owners of the Big Sandy Shoot a few years back. It's in western AZ, on BLM land. Similar to what I think is the big full-auto shoot in KY. As I recall he had several BARs, a Maxim gun, and an M1919. Like an idiot I didn't take him up on it, he said to come the week before with a few hundred $$, the organizers have their private shoot before the masses are allowed to. While we're at it, any users of "corrosive" surplus ammo who don't already know, clean-up is almost the same as for regular ammo. Only additional step is to pour boiling water down the bore, before normal clean-up (Windex adds nothing to the picture, the evil potassium salts are water-soluble). Very small deal. Some people get all worked up about it.
Talking bolt actions here. If you use corrosive in a semi-auto, you're crazy. Can be cleaned up, but (depending on climate) vastly more involved than a bolt barrel. Senior officials were stunned when the president asked if any of part the White House grounds could be paved over and used for go-cart races. After an uncomfortable silence, one department head told the president that she would look into it. Trump proceeded to tell repeated and rambling stories of riding go-carts in his youth. 124 . . . lots of internet FUD that leads people to believe there's some magic about corrosive ammo.
Posted by: Very Unstable Semi-Genius, AKA rhomboid at January 07, 2018 07:49 PM (QDnY+) I recall reading that early noncorrosive priming wasn't as stable, long-term, as the older corrosive priming, and that's why military ammo continued to use it long after pretty much all civilian ammo makers switched. Might also have just been bureaucratic inertia in the military procurement system and not based on any real difference in performance. Posted by: Iowa Bob at January 07, 2018 08:04 PM (DNH+H) 168

Iowa Bob that sounds right - about corrosive ammo originally having longer shelf life. 30 carbine was "born" non-corrosive, I think - might have been a first for a military caliber. I knew, but have forgotten, if US M-1 ammo during the war war already non-corrosive, or not.

Yea, gun thread.
Yesterday took my 9mm PPQ to the range, testing the 'dip' or flinch I seem to have picked up that's making me shoot low, consistently with my G21. And, yes, it looks like it is a flinch. Thanks to whoever suggested going down a caliber to check it. I only had a pair of 'dipped' shots, the PPQ shoots like a laser for me to point of aim. So it was easy to eliminate the gun from the equation. Now I have to figure out how to train the stupid flinch away. I want to go back to .45 as my carry caliber but it looks like I'll have work to do. Related note: The PPQ remains a great pistol, not 100% reliable like my Glocks and XDs (I had one weird failure to feed and it also wouldn't extract the round), but a very comfortable and accurate gun. As a safe rule, any US GI 30-06 made after 1955 is non-corrosive, anything before 1950 is corrosive, and anything in between may or not be, depending on where and when it was made. Mark that's good. Only real solution is practice practice practice (dry, and actual range time). I find that focus is key, too. When my focus drifts even a little bit, I'll pull semi-auto shots (all calibers/platforms except the CZ-83 in single action) low/left. Shot a steel match yesterday with my XD9 and sure enough, on stages where I stayed focused almost no misses, including on the small 4-inch plates - and on a few, pulled it left of large (2 X 3 ft) rectangular steel plates.

Posted by: Steck at January 07, 2018 08:33 PM (LlRQB) 237
With the flinch/dipped muzzle thing, basically it's your subconscious mind butting in and trying to take control because WOW BIG BANG DANGER DANGER. It's not as if you're doing it intentionally. The thing is, ALL pistol shooters do the same thing from time to time. Hell, after 30+ years I STILL do it on occasion. So you have to kind of Jedi Mind Fuck your subconscious into thinking that everything's cool. First, I've found it pretty effective to diligently work on good stance/grip. Then your mind realizes that you're in control and it doesn't have to jump in and make an ass of itself. The other thing that works for me is what I think of as Tense Body, Relaxed Mind. If you're in a good shooting position, your body will be tense, by design. It needs to be that way in order to provide that steady, firm shooting position. But your mind reads that as DANGER, because in a dangerous situation your body will tense up. So I try to relax the mind at the same time that my body tenses up for the shot. Works surprisingly well, for me at least. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at January 07, 2018 08:33 PM (eXA4G) 238

I have a .357 SW revolver, a Marlin .357 lever action and a Ruger .38 special revolver. If I sell, I will probably buy a Mossberg 12 ga. that I think will be legal just about anywhere. This is a concern because I am planning a 3 month camping trip in BC, Alta. and Alaska this summer, and do not want to become bear shit. I remember years ago going through Canada and my Ithaca 12 ga. and box of slugs did raise any eyebrows with the Canucks.

Mark, somebody had a Kel-Tec 9mm carbine at yesterday's match, not sure it was the Sub2000, or maybe it just had a different fore-end (was sort of slim and perforated, like an AR fore-end).
We finished early and then it was play time, some guy set up a chrono which was nice to time my 9mm loads, and got to fire the fancy S ampersand W 9mm race-gun revolver (forget model #). I get those race guns - the trigger pull, tuned by the owner, was ridiculous, and the recoil slight - but they simply don't interest me. Guess I'm a stock-car racer when it comes to guns. 241 I am thinking of selling my present guns. I live in Moab, UT where there is no particular concern about safety, BUT I plan to be traveling in places like CA, OR, WA and Canada where anything I have is probably illegal.
Posted by: Ruthless at January 07, 2018 08:34 PM (md3fh) Ruthless, everything you own there should be legal anywhere in the US and Canada. Shouldn't need to sell any of them. Canuks raise their eyebrows at any gun, a shotgun or rifle isn't really a problem there. They're really twitchy about pistols, though. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards now with TLJ review linkage at January 07, 2018 08:35 PM A friend of mine caught me flinching while shooting .40 and after the usual ribbing handed me his 44 mag. He had loaded it with a combo of light and heavy handloads. Told me not to worry about the target just shoot the thing. Well, the heavy loads really rocked. Without trying to be precise, it was grin inducing. Going back to the .40 seemed like childs play so the moral of the story is start with your big calibers and move down at the range and the flinch goes away. Downside? Big ammo costs money. Now I have to figure out how to train the stupid flinch away. I want to go back to .45 as my carry caliber but it looks like I'll have work to do.
Easiest way to get rid of the flinch and the low left hits. 1. Empty weapon, cocked, PENNY on the slide behind the sight. Continue to cock and pull the trigger making sure the penny doesn't move. Take penny off, load weapon, pull trigger like the penny was still there. 2 Low left - tilting/ dipping the head. Stand up straight, head straight - focus on the target, bring weapon up to the target, not your eye down to the weapon. Remember the penny. Ruthless, believe it or not, I'm not sure whether you can travel into CA with handguns not on the roster. But I *think* so - because that's how most such guns get here - and you CAN self private-party in the state (yeah, like that makes any f***ing sense for a supposedly "safety based" roster). People move to the state, sell their off-roster handguns.
So I'd say hold your horses a bit. ITC might know, or red if he's around. Otherwise look on CalGuns.net, a few sub-forums where questions like this come up constantly. And while you're at it, you need to be up to date on stupid gun laws in all those places you'll be going, of course. My general rule is don't sell a gun if you like it and use it. Have not yet sold one. You could always put 'em in storage. If you're ready to move on from them or use the proceeds for something else, that's different of course. For cleaning, I favor Hoppe's No. 9 cleaner and lubricant. A friend of mine swears by Break Free gun oil. I've also heard good things about Ballistol and meant to try it sometime. I've given up on the cheap Chinese ammo. My brother gave me several cases, and it doesn't have enough oomph to consistently advance the next round in my favorite handgun after firing. I only used that ammo for target practice, but it just got to be too much of a nuisance. I'm not a re-loader so commercial American made ammo makes the most sense for me. I've noticed just what you're talking about on days I bring the .45s and 9mms to shoot. After 100 rounds of 45, the 9mm feels like a toy. My concern is I want to my 45 ACP my primary carry caliber (after decades of 9mm, I finally tipped over the line between the two). So the 'dip' seems to happen most often in the first magazine, when I MOST need accuracy, God forbid. Posted by: Jill v2 at January 07, 2018 08:49 PM (v86Kx) Everything you said makes sense I've stopped buying Tula ammo too. Too many malfunctions in my guns. I first learned about corrosive ammo about 55 years ago when I bought my first "real" rifle, a .303 that I sporterized for deer hunting. Never previously used anything but .22 and non corrosive ammo. The Enfield was in cosmoline, probably never used, and I fired some crappy mil surplus ammo through it. Two days later the barrel was fried. Damn! Oh well, I think I paid $20 for it, or maybe less. That was back when a dollar went a long way.

285 I see Ruthless getting the same (good) advice from everybody. For transportation within CA, not that complicated (just stupid). Regular car, locked in the trunk. SUV-type vehicle, inside a locked container (undefined, any normal case would be OK). No ammo chambered, no loaded magazines in guns; loaded magazines not in guns OK. That's pretty much it. Posted by: Very Unstable Semi-Genius, AKA rhomboid at January 07, 2018 08:48 PM (QDnY+) For transport, that's the way things were as of 3 years ago when I moved away. I don't THINK they made any changes on transport, but a check with the folks at CalGuns should set things straight. On the case thing, I just used a little combination lock on my pistol soft case. And carried the unloaded and cased pistol in my EDC bag virtually everywhere. Totally legal in most places. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at January 07, 2018 08:54 PM (eXA4G) 303

ITC, nothing has changed on transport AFAIK. Hope not - those are the rules I follow when taking guns in a car. Unloaded and in the trunk covers everything, if you have a trunk. Only SUVs or trucks without trunks gets into (small) complications.

Love the HK VP9.
Posted by: Notorious BFD ---------- Ah. A fellow traveler. Aside from being a nice firearm, in the functional sense, the ability to 'shape' the grip is particularly nice. For those who do not know, if you observe the picture at the top of the link, you will notice that there is a hole at the lower left corner of the grip. There is a roll-pin which can be driven out, that releases the backstrap. Sliding the backstrap down releases it, and the two side grip panels as well. I am uncertain as to whether or not there are aftermarket backstraps/side panels available, but HK has three different sets, with different profiles/thicknesses. That makes for six different grip configurations. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 07, 2018 09:05 PM (w1zJX) 319
As far as the Santa Fe knock offs, they are worth buying if at a good price for the novelty and all. One man's junk is another man's treasure so to speak. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at January 07, 2018 08:53 PM (EoRCO) As long as the Santa Fe conversion was based on a No 4 at a decent price, I'd jump on it, just as a bruiser. I have a really rough (seriously bubba'd) Savage-built No 4 sporter conversion that I picked up for super cheap to have it converted to 7.62x39 by SIA. Of course, before I could get it sent over, they stopped doing the conversion. Later on, I decided to have them do their 45 Auto conversion instead. Of course, they stopped doing that one too. They occasionally still do a run of the 45 Auto conversion parts. I'll have to pick up a kit and either do it myself or have it built for me. Effective January 1, 2001, no handgun may be manufactured within California, imported into California for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale unless that handgun model has passed firing, safety, and drop tests and is certified for sale in California by the Department of Justice. They say you can't envision how it's going to go down the day you need your gun, so you need to prepare for all eventualities.
However, I'm fairly sure that if I need one, it will a) be dark 2) be close up, whether in the house or the street III) be a suprise So my go-to has been a .380 with crimson trace sight. I can't say enough good things about that set-up. Take it to an indoor range where I can better see the dot at least once a year to make sure it's calibrated to point of aim, and I"ve every confidence that my shots will be close enough. I'm equally confident that I'll not have time to get into a stance, get a good sight picture, and squeeze nicely. In all likelihood I'll be using one arm to defend myself while I'm going backwards or falling. I sure don't want to shoot that arm, but I am going to want to get a shot off before I'm prostrate. Posted by: redc1c4 at January 07, 2018 09:07 PM (mahnP) Yup. For anyone foolish enough to move TO California, as of 3 years ago when I last checked, you could bring your guns in (no assault weapons, normal-capacity mags etc of course) even if they aren't on the handgun list. You do the handgun registration form with CA DOJ, and once you've established CA residency you can sell them via person-to-person transfer within the state. Which is how a lot of non-handgun list pistols get into CA legally. The rest are by cops buying them via the cop exemption and selling p-to-p. But that gets dicey for the cops anymore. State DOJ started clamping down on that a few years ago, charging local cops as unlicensed gun dealers. Posted by: IllTemperedCur at January 07, 2018 09:16 PM (eXA4G) 340

Friendswood gun range closed after accidental shooting By Lindsay Ellis Updated 6:21 pm, Sunday, January 7, 2018 Best Shot Range in Friendswood closed Sunday after a gunshot injury caused by a weapon malfunction. A man was shooting a handgun at the range, and when he attempted to clear the weapon, the gun discharged, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. That agency, in a post to Twitter, called the discharge a "malfunction" and said the shooter was hospitalized in "good condition." The shooting range's management said in a statement that an investigation is underway and that all safety measures were taken.
