Easier Problem - Black To Play

20180106 - Problem 1.jpg
4r1k1/1p3q2/p1pQ4/2P1R1p1/5n2/2B5/PP5P/6K1 b - - 0 1

It's mate in 3:

1... Nh3+!
2.Kg2 (If 2.Kh1 then 2...Qf1#)

2...Qf2+
3.Kxh3 Qf3#
(or, if 3.Kh1 then 3...Qg1#)

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20180106 - Problem 2.jpg
k3K3/8/7R/N6p/8/8/8/q7 w - - 0 1

Once you see the correct first move, the rest of the decision tree is pretty much a straight line:

1.Ra6+! Kb8
2.Nc6+ Kb7
3.Rxa1 Kxc6
4.Rh1 Kd5
5.Rxh5+ and wins

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

47 When I was in high school, there was no chess club at the school. So, on a whim, I set up a new chess club.

Four kids showed up. I tested them out by playing each of them a game. Unfortunately, they weren't very good, and I knew we had zero chance if we played any other schools.

So the club, for its brief existence, was entirely nothing but me giving "blindfold exhibitions" agains the other four members. I would play all four at once while blindfolded, four separate games.

I'm actually not that great at blindfold, but the other players were all so bad that it was the only way to make the games a fair fight. I made a zillion embarrassing blunders, but they made even more blunders, so I'd end up winning anyway -- at last those times where we could even get to the end of the games during the lunch period.

The great apes kind of creep me out because they're so similar to humans, but off.

A couple I knew got a pair of squirrel monkeys, because squirrel monkeys really are cute by any standards. They built the monkeys a large enclosure outside. Then they came into possession of rabbit, so they put the rabbit in with the sweet little monkeys.

The male monkey fucked it to death. The female monkey held the rabbit down for the male.

Sooooo, that's all needed to know about owning monkeys.

89 There's something that's been bothering me regarding the dossier, which is available online for anyone to peruse.

The slightest examination reveals it to be poorly written in the extreme, with prurience inserted for prurience sake. The broken English is laughable, text book attempt to appear credible. The few known facts are classic building block attempts at credibility building too.

Simply put the whole thing is totally embarrassing and hundreds of thousands of dollars were supposedly charged for its production. If I had paid for it and received that work product I would have demanded a refund immediately.

Anyone who discusses the dossier with any level of seriousness is ridiculous, right? Yet it's still happening.

I wouldn't be too sure. I think sometimes the "Asiatic look" develops as a spontaneous mutation in Caucasians. Consider: Peter Lorre (who played an Asian), Christopher Walken, Charles Bronson, and especially former Congressman Jason Chaffetz. In any case, how did Asians arise in the first place? I think it may have followed that path.

134 90 Very funny picture OM. And I like the second model / dress.

Posted by: NaCly Dog

YThis brings up the interesting issue of endogamy vs. exogamy.

Byt "the second model," do you mean the tall blonde one?

The question is, are you more attracted to her because she's "in your gene pool," or because she's specifically NOT in your gene pool.

"Endogamy" means "being attracted to women who look like your ethnicity," while "exogame" menas "being attracted to women from a different ethnicity."

The anthrolopogists will tell you that the very existence of different ethnicities and races means that most men MUST be more attracted to women who look like then men themselves, elsewise different ethnic types would not have arisen in the first place.

But a competing theory says that mena re attracted to "exotic" women because men seek "novelty" in sex partners.

So let's take a poll

The Endogamy vs. Exogamy Poll

generally speaking, all other aspects being equal, are you more attracted to

1. People of your own ethnicity or who look like yourself
2. People of different ethnicities -- the more different from me, the better
3. Honestly, if it moves, I want to stick my dick in it. Ethnicity never plays a role at all. I luvs wimmins!

Discover magazine mentioned this in an article back in the 1980s. They were talking about standards of beauty between the races. The author got to talking about women with some Fore dude (men are the same everywhere, they like talking about women). The Fore dude was happy with Fore-ettes and didn't understand what white guys saw in albinoes with floppy hair and 'misshapen breasts'.

I guess "racist" is the term when one realizes that they think certain black women are stunningly gorgeous but it's because they pretty much look like dark skinned white women.

Halle Berry is the only example I can think of off-hand, but she's mostly "meh" to me. An easy nationally-known name, though. Which makes my point, I guess.

Posted by: rickl at January 06, 2018 05:47 PM (sdi6R)

193 There's a difference between having a preference for a specific type (whether like or unlike) and just being able to assess the beauty of one who might not be your preferred type. A white guy might be into oriental chicks but that doesn't mean that he doesn't recognize beauty in white chicks or doesn't consider some white women to be more beautiful (and attractive to him) than some oriental women. The preference only comes into play when "all else being equal" is operative.

I prefer white women but that doesn't mean that if a picture of Vanessa Williams is in a collection with a bunch of white women it wouldn't be easy to recognize that she is likely the best looking one, by far. That says nothing about my preferences but only about an immediate assessment of beauty.

Another way of parsing it would be, maybe all people have a sense of aesthetics and that this may not be related to their own ethnicity as such.

As for me, I think Nordic women objectively look the best, so I'd go with the second one. But I'm not Nordic, and I don't think that plays into my aesthetic sense. Same as if I were comparing two products and tried to figure out which gave me the best value for money. It would be a totally objective decision and would have nothing to do with my personal attributes.

217 The "endogamy vs exogamy" thing reminds me of a question about sexual orientation for those who think it's genetic. Now, I don't think that is genetic, it's more due to early experiences and relationships. But let's say it was genetic, for the sake of argument. Does the mechanism work like: "attraction to the opposite sex/attraction to the same sex", so heteros would have the former gene, homos the latter? Or would it work like "attraction to women/attraction to men", so hetero men and lesbians would have the former gene and hetero women and gays the latter?

267 The
"endogamy vs exogamy" thing reminds me of a question about sexual
orientation for those who think it's genetic. Now, I don't think that is
genetic, it's more due to early experiences and relationships. But
let's say it was genetic, for the sake of argument. Does the mechanism
work like: "attraction to the opposite sex/attraction to the same sex",
so heteros would have the former gene, homos the latter? Or would it
work like "attraction to women/attraction to men", so hetero men and
lesbians would have the former gene and hetero women and gays the
latter?Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at January 06, 2018 05:59 PM

318 134 90 Very funny picture OM.

I'd have to say Endogamy, as Jules familt and mine lived about 10 miles from each other in the borderlands of Scotland in the 1600s. It was weird when I figured that out yrs after we got together.

333 Men are cursed. My nose hairs grow about the same rate as my ear hairs, really fast. My head hairs follicles are dead and gone . My lower good parts don't work any more. Life is hell.

Hey Muse! Long time no... sQueaK!!
Fond greetings, fair morons. I'm a lurker of many, many years. Pleased ta meet'cha.
Muse, I wanted to let you know that Voltaren wasn't even on my radar when you brought it up. Now it's one of the best things in my arsenal for breakthrough pain. Thank you, Sir!
You continue to be a blessing to me even after all these years. Good to see you -- and in such good company! This chess thread has to be one of the most congenial places on the net along with the book thread you and good CBD manage.
Cheers to all. Thanks for allowing me to wiggle my plague way in.
((( poof)))
