Douche Bags Gotta Douche

Or why as a "True Blue Conservative" Brett Stephens still wishes Hillary Clinton was our president.

Tax cuts. Deregulation. More for the military; less for the United Nations. The Islamic State crushed in its heartland. Assad hit with cruise missiles. Troops to Afghanistan. Arms for Ukraine. A tougher approach to North Korea. Jerusalem recognized as Israel’s capital. The Iran deal decertified. Title IX kangaroo courts on campus condemned. Yes to Keystone. No to Paris. Wall Street roaring and consumer confidence high.

And, of course, Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court. What, for a conservative, is there to dislike about this policy record as the Trump administration rounds out its first year in office?

That’s the question I keep hearing from old friends on the right who voted with misgiving for Donald Trump last year and now find reasons to like him. I admit it gives me pause. I agree with every one of the policy decisions mentioned above. But I still wish Hillary Clinton were president.

I didn't vote for PDT to be the president of my church council. I didn't elect him to be my BFF. I voted for him to enact the measures that Brett Stephen thinks are good but not good enough. F*ck you.

Yeah, I want to be governed by an unindicted felon and lectured to by a douche bag.

5 Really weird article: "I got everything I want, but I hate Santa".

What's even stranger is that not a single one of those things would have come with Clinton. So there must be something Clinton would have brought to the party that he cares more about than the some total of everything he lists as Trump accomplishments. What in the world could it be? He doesn't say.

Very odd guy.

9 I agree with every one of the policy decisions mentioned above. But I still wish Hillary Clinton were president.

Which ultimately means: he does not really agree with those policy decisions. None of them.

Because if you think Donald Trump is morally icky, you have to see the same thing in the utterly corrupt, repugnant Hillary Clinton -- or worse. He lies, she lies. He has done nasty things in his past, she has done nasty things in her past.

There is no critical moral difference between the two in terms of the past, not in character, only in detail. The big difference is that President Trump appears to have learned and grown. He still lies outrageously, but he's abandoned his womanizing past, from all evidence.

No, the real problem is that Donald Trump is too much the Al Czervic in the golf club. He's crass, he talks the wrong way, he's crude in his speech. He doesn't go to all the right parties, he doesn't hang out with all the right people.

And that's a hideous, unbelievable attitude to hold.

This past week they did at least run a long article about how bad it is to get any government project done in the city. Speaking of a new subway tunnel and what it takes (money) to get anything done. Agreements with the unions, politicians costs billions more than it should. I can see why Trump cancelled US help to build the Hudson river tunnel, even if it is needed. Don't give me that 'overall economic benefit' crap. This isn't trickle down, its about you and your benefit and maybe other parts of the state in several removes might get a ha'penny.

Obama was a mix of Dinkins (identity politics) and Lindsey (triumphant idiotice liberalism), with a smidgen of Abe Beame (fiscal irresponsibility).

Just like the nimwitz quoted above, NYC MSM hated on Rudy the full eight years, even when positive change was self-evident. But the voters disagreed, and Rudy even won Manhattan when he got re-elected. History can rhyme.

I said that with Trump we'd get someone with Mad Media Skillz -- necessary for an R President right now -- and Rudy Giuliani pragmatism. Trump's doing on a bigger scale what Rudy did in NYC.

What will kill self-appointed Thought Leaders like Brett Stephens is that they're going to wind up on the Wrong Side of History.

80 It's not just Trump is Al Czervik in Caddy Shack. It's not Hillary over Donald.
It's not just the Deep State versus the plebes.

Donald is a living refutation of the illusion of the elite governance of America. All the lies and half lies we've all be fed for generations through Mass Media are in danger of being refuted by the existence of Trump.

Hillary and Bill, Obama and his OFA followers, the editorial board of the NY Times, or the WaPo, are underneath, just as coarse, vulgar, corrupt and totally human just like Donald Trump.

The difference is that Donald Trump is just who he appears to be. If he would adopt the illusion of the idiotic Elites that have manipulated us for decades, they would accept him.

They feed us a bucketfull of altruistic lies about Open Borders, Dreamers, the downtrodden poor, Pseudo refugees from the Middle East, Islam is the religion of peace and on, and on. They expect us to swallow all this and be the good submissive citizens that the majority of us have always been.
Eight years of Obama had a lot of us ready to barf it all up. Another term with Hillary was just too much.

People around me still remark how STUPID people are that voted for Trump. I wonder if it isn't really the reverse. People want the comfort of belief over thought, they want the pretend world that existed for years. They want to be sheep or shepherds.

They don't really want to be Free Men and Women.

And that's really the lie that Trump has exposed. A lot of so-called Americans actually reject the idea of freedom. They want a heirarchy, with all us deplorables doing the work, keeping the wheels turning, chanting about the American Dream whatever that has actually become. And Bret Stephens, David Frum, Bill Kristol, Cokie Roberts, Walter Cronkite, Huntley and Brinkley, Scott Pelley, and all the rest, preaching to us every night about how the world SHOULD be.

Putting aside her many failings while in her appointed office, on style and intellect alone, is Hillary really that smooth and sophisticated? I find her delivery harsh and grating and her ideas stale.

I think they are perplexed that we have someone in the White House who wasn't a lawyer or of the professional governing class. Kind of like how Eisenhower was only a military man, forgetting his administrative genius.

If one reads the reader comments at the NYT, one will be lectured by hundreds of douchebags.

The irrational anti-Trump hatred seems to boil down to three things in both the disgraced establishment talking heads and
the public:

1. Style. A shallow obsession with apoearance over results. This extends way beyond Trump's unprecedented abrasiveness to the traditional leftist predeliction for valuing noble-sounding promises over actual tracking of real outcomes.

2. Ox gored. They benefit directy or indirectly from the globalist/big government/welfare state status quo and simply believe the new situation is going to break their rice bowl.

3. Ego. The experts were humiliated by being proved wrong again and again. The Hillary voters were utterly wrong. Trump, and by extension us, did that to them. As Ace has noted more than once, the Orogressives want to be part of a carved-out moral and intellectual elite. That tribal status is more important to them than even their own long-term survival.

Yes, I'm too old for this shit but it was grand and now I OWN this little neighborhood because nobody else has shoveled theirs and the a-wipes of the HOA haven't even had our little street plowed. Trust me that they will get a piece of my mind on Tuesday. :-)

But Stephens would have preferred all that under Hillary, because Trump is uncouth, or something.

225 But I still wish Hillary Clinton were president.

As others have pointed out that invalidates any conservative intellectual or ideological argument he's pretending to make. Keep in mind, the NYT and WaPo have rigid expectations for the "conservatives" they throw 6-7 figure coin at. Even the editorial opinion contributors they occasionally let through the gates.

He's giving his masters what they want-propaganda to diffuse Trumps real accomplishments among any centrist to conservative readers who remain at the old gray whore.

227 Where are all the Fake Feminists in support of Iranian women and girls??

Posted by: Soothsayer SLX Pro Series II Platinum Turbo at December 31, 2017 03:20 PM (+iFQS)

They can't be bothered, because their true purpose is to undermine America. They don't give a rat's ass about women per se.

Here's the proof: women have a squawk about something. Do the feminist throw a shit fit, or not?

You can't answer the question, because you need to know where those women are, and whether their squawk could be used to undermine America.

QED.

I've done this to liberals before: quoting a news story to them, including the pertinent facts but omitting the crucial details that they need to decide which way to jump. I'd have two essentially equivalent stories, and whichever way they did jump - if I could force them to choose - I'd cite the other one to them.

My best exploit: I quoted a news story that had three thugs beating up a college student. My liberal interlocutor was full of sympathy for the three thugs, they probably were deprived, should be treated with leniency, etc.

Then I sent him the link. The three thugs were white, the college student black. Gotcha.

229 So yesterday I cashed in a surprise late Christmas present I had been paying into for a couple of months:

Took my three Kids (21, 18 and 10), their cousins visiting from the Old Country, (South Africa - 13 and 17), several boy and girlfriends of my Kids and even, shockingly, my Evil Ex- and her Mom, to the indoor skydiving place in Tukwila Washington.

It was universally acclaimed as "The Best Day In The Whole History Of Days" and even the Ex- was pleased.

Next stop: jumping out of an actual airplane.

Or
perhaps He knows they have been found out, the mask is off, He would Prefer a govt that demands all from us while stealing from everyone , dividing us into hate and feafrul groups all at the mercy of them, to be pulled out, wrung out, in their ficklness and who is useful to them for that day for a cudgel against others.

I imagine he didn't mind hillarys servers, the pay to play schemes, nor the selling of of uranium to russians, guns to terrorists in the east or cartels to the south of us while trying to strip Us of the same.
I imagine he didn't care at all of ambassadors being murdering, and video guys being arrested to cover for Her sleazy ideas and graft.

This one is somehow different. Instead of centralized protest with "elites" in Tehran and universities, this one is in the boonie city/towns and diffuse. That makes it hard to put down. Also I think the 2009 group was more tepid, afraid and wanted "reform" and this one the rioter/protesters want the Islamic "terror elite" dead. I think it is a classic preference cascade like in Romania. When a preference cascade is squashed it comes back much worse next time. There are also some parallels with our own 2016 election and results from the hinterlands. The citizenry are tired of being the terror financiers and cannon fodder and impoverished to do it. They weren't asked if this is what they want. It obviously isn't.

With humility about how little we know about what's happening inside Iran, this much is clear: it's an Iranian moment and not anyone else's. But the rights of people to protest peacefully and voice their aspirations are universal and governments everywhere should respect that.

It has been amazing - and illuminating - to see just how important mere cant is to some people.

O'Rourke is famous for his "WE BE BAD" quote (which I will not copy here as it fall afoul of the mu.nu Gods) which I thought would put him firmly in the Trump camp.

I guess I was wrong and he really didn't mean it.

370 Reading the year-end wrap ups from the NeverTrumpers I conclude they love his policies but regard them as standard GOP fare. What pisses them off to no end is that a garbled speaker like Trump is enacting those policies. They hate his pugnaciousness and his grandiose bluster.

They make lots of errors in punditry, obviously, but the biggest one is the first: No Republican would do what Trump has done. Not a single fucking one. You see the proof every day in the mealy-mouthed Rubio comments, and the disappearance from public life entirely of the rest of the field. The exception to all that I just said, of course, is Ted Cruz, He is supporting almost all of what Trump is doing and, I hope, taking careful note of how to fight a trench warfare political fight. He will need those lessons when he himself runs again for President.

Maybe then the NeverTrumpers will get what they claim the want, an articulate Republican. A genuine conservative.

I don't believe them though. I think they want people like McVain, or Romney. People who lose gracefully.

Hillary Clinton seems to be a significant exception to the rule that
people who reach the top levels of power are the type that get by on
very little sleep and have extraordinarily good health.

She's sickly, messed up, and sleeps like a cat. My guess is in a
Hillary administration she'd do virtually nothing in terms of actual
policy, mostly a hermit avoiding the press and making few appearances.

If Hillary would have won, would Valarie Jarrett still be running the country?

Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at December 31, 2017 05:50 PM (UsCnO)

375 I can understand someone voting third party; I can't understand anybody wanting Hillary. Even on whatever one finds personally distasteful about Trump, where does Hillary score better? Respectability from the press, I suppose. But she is a spiteful woman; very credible reports have her drunk and swearing at staff; she blames the media every bit that Trump does. The FBI Director laid out the case for her having committed a felony. I don't get it.
