EMT 12/31/17 - Happy AoS Lifestyle Day!

This is the hallowed day where AoS morons can really let themselves go with all that drinking and carousing, without the concern that their drinking and carousing will be looked at as a departure from normal behaviors like it is for the other 364 days of the year.

Yes, this is that one day where all your bad habits are lost in the noise of the year-end reveling of "normals", and you can make countless resolutions that to your addled brain will seem like attainable compacts.

Jan 2nd will see the crash to reality for most, as they show up to work still reeking of cheap alcohol that none of your coworkers exhibit, given they took all of the 1st to sober up.

But forget all that for now: You will have all of next year to indulge in self-recriminations, but Today is YOUR DAY.

Carpe Ipsum!

1 Good Morning Morons today is Sunday, December 31, 2017. On this day in 1759 Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000 year lease at 45 pounds per annum and started brewing Guinness beer. They now have a brewery in the US in MD.

2 Morons, it is not safe to vacation in Mexico. There are too many nice places to vacation in the US to take a chance on Mexico. Hell, go to Charleston, it is becoming THE vacation spot for the US.

5 Trump halts yet another Obama crap-fest plan. He agreed (supposedly) to finance half the $13B cost for another railway tunnel between NJ and NYC that would only benefit NJ commuters to NYC. Trump says there was no record of any such agreement and since this was a local project for the benefit of locals the federal government would not finance any of it. I love it.

49 Witnesses told local media they saw Bradley being chased by gunmen who shot him with a 9 mm handgun about 4 a.m., Mexico News Daily reported.

However, police weren't called for four hours, and when they arrived they found Bradley's body in a parking lot, the website reported.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that Bradley was unmarried and did not have children.

Mexico's unsafe! That's why we need to bring them over here. Even the criminals. So they can kill each other over here I guess, along with the occasional citizen.

54 A GOP senator is calling for a Justice Department probe into alleged “SWAT-ting attacks” on conservative bloggers, as dozens of conservative bloggers observed a “day of silence” to draw attention to the pranks.

SWAT-ting involves placing a fake 911 call reporting a shooting that prompts a full-throated emergency response to the victim’s home. U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) on June 5 sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder demanding an inquiry into instances of SWAT-ting.

“The use of SWAT-ting as a harassment tool is apparently not new,” Chambliss wrote in the letter, “but its use as a tool for targeting political speech appears to be more of a recent development. … The emerging pattern is both disgusting and dangerous.”

Well, let's not be too hasty condemning this. Do Hector, Sure or BSG live in California?

Seriously though, interpreting this law this broadly (originally to address phoning individuals to harass them) would prevent anyone posting anything critical of anyone or anything on FB. If applied uniformly.

Pretty built up, with restaurants and hotels and such. And there are hills...it isn't flat. You have to drive a long way to get to a deserted beach like the one in the movie, and even then I wonder about the color of the water. That looked Caribbean or South Pacific to me.

It was a fun place to go in the 90s, but nowadays the crime in that part of Mexico is insane.

88 Good thing Trump killed Obama's war on coal plants before this record big freeze hit. Just imagine the disaster this would have been if Scankles had been elected.

But burning coal causes global warming which melts the polar icecaps which weakens the polar vortex which makes the winter colder.

So paradoxically the best way to keep warm in the winter is not to heat your house.

I do hope he cuts off the Highspeed rail funding, if he hasn't already. One interesting article in the NYT (surprised me) by way of Drudge. The cost of building a subway tunnel in NYC is huge, and I mean huge. A comment by a Paris person said I thought their costs were high. Two or three times the number of workers on the project, with everyone taking a cut. Billions and billions for each mile. I can see where Trump doens't want to fund the Hudson river tunnel. The tunnel could probably be built a half the cost most places. The existing tunnels are very old, but the politicians want to get in on the gravy train, so to speak..

I think she survived the fire because she was in jail at the time.

As virtually a lifelong New Yorker, I will say that we absolutely do need the rail tunnel. Now that said, public works projects here are an absolute nightmare of political corruption, construction union thuggery and bureaucratic insanity. When shit gets done, that is IF it gets done, it costs perhaps 50 times more and takes 10 times as long to get done. And then it breaks down.

I have given up on this city in that regard. They'll never let go of their iron grip on things but the only real solution is privatization of certain transport and infrastructure.

Steeling wiring became a big problem when copper prices went through the roof. Home builders for a while here had to hire night guards after the wiring was installed. Imagine the cost of that 00 meter box cable alone.

Vic,
I beg to differ.

I was surprised to see it. The statewide ban has a loophole, for the tourists.

When
the Transient Occupancy Tax exceeds a certain amount, boom, the ban
goes away. It's not just for beer and wine either. Check it out.
Richland and Lexington counties are also exempt.

That only applies to sale of liquor by the drink in restaurants in counties that hold a referendum to approve it. Package stores are prohibited from opening between 7 pm Saturday and 9 am Monday.

255 CA police have arrested the asshole who called the Kansas police in that
swatting case we reported yesterday. They do not say what he will be
charged with.

If it is a felony charge then he is really toast because of the felony murder statutes. Death resulting from the commission of a felony etc.

256 I took the holiday break to re-read "Anathem" by Neal Stephenson. It was a tough read the first time through, as Stephenson had reached the point in his writing career when he seemed to find it necessary to invent a new language. Also, coming after "Snow Crash" and "Diamond Age", the monkishness of the story threw me off initially. However, I always found the ideas in the book fascinating, and the re-read was very enjoyable.

This world is split between secular powers and academics, with the academic world sub-divided into groups that only interact with the outside world for 10 days every 1, 10, 100, or 1000 years. This long attention span vs the instantaneous gratification of the secular world is interesting (and also the subject of Vernor Vinges work on Focus in "A Deepness in the Sky") and really says a lot about our current situation. You have people who can turn their focused attention to an important task for weeks, months, years vs. scatter-brained twits who cant look up from their phone long enough to miss getting hit by a truck.

Yet the desire for that immediate news feed, the gratification of a retweet is always there, a siren song of the digital age.

Anyway, a great book if you have the time and remember - Twitter makes you stupid. (You can find me on Twitter @motionview).

258 The MOVE bombing happened in W. Philly - Powelton Village. I remember seeing the plume of smoke from my window. At first I assumed it was a refinery incident.
