Anti-Government Protests Spread to 20 Cities In Iran

Day two of mass protests against the Mullahs.

How did the protests start?

The demonstrations began in the north-eastern city of Mashhad - the country's second most-populous - on Thursday.

People there took to the streets to express anger at the government over high prices, and vented their fury against President Hassan Rouhani. Fifty-two people were arrested for chanting "harsh slogans".

The protests spread to other cities in the north-east, and and some developed into broader anti-government demonstrations, calling for the release of political prisoners and an end to police beatings.

On Friday, despite warnings from authorities, the demonstrations spread further to some of the biggest cities in the country.

They represent the most serious and widespread expression of public discontent in Iran since mass protests in 2009 that followed a disputed election, correspondents say.

What are people complaining about?

What began as a protest against economic conditions and corruption has turned political.

Slogans have been chanted against not just Mr Rouhani but Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and clerical rule in general.

Demonstrators were reportedly heard yelling slogans like "The people are begging, the clerics act like God". Protests have even been held in Qom, a holy city home to powerful clerics.

There is also anger at Iran's interventions abroad. In Mashhad, some chanted "not Gaza, not Lebanon, my life for Iran", a reference to what protesters say is the administration's focus on foreign rather than domestic issues.

Via National Review, the mullahs' armed thugs may not be willing to shoot upon protesters calling for the death of the cleric tyrants:

From Glenn Reynolds, Trump has issued a declaration of support of the protesters:

Because Trump has sided with the protesters against the terrorist-hiring apocalyptic dictators, David Frum, Jen Rubin, Tom Nichols, Bill Kristol, David French, and the rest of the #MuhPrinciples gang will have to swing swiftly to urging Obama-like support of the mullahs.

Then the mass protests happen on Barry's watch, and the silence was deafening.

Trump's statement of support is a good start, but we've been at war with Iran in various ways since at least the hostage crisis, and it spiked when they were killing American troops in Iraq, but the response has been mostly crickets.

That was basically true of Iraq as well, and well, you saw the same war I did.

Of all the places where regime change had the best bet of producing a stable, Western-friendly government and reasonably enlightened nation, Iraq was A #1 By Far.

And again, well, look at it. I still think the Iraq War was right and just and not a total failure, but it sure didn't go the way I had hoped.

Some but not all Iranians are pro-American. The Shah repressed the Communists, so leftist Iranians are anti-American, just as leftists everywhere are anti-American.

(Because of that, the Iranian Communists initially supported the Islamic Revolution. Then the mullahs rounded them up and exterminated them. Heh.)

I thought - and think - the same thing. Besides Iraq being the pick of the cultural litter in the Middle East, it has oil, unlike some countries there, and most importantly, unlike Iran, it's Arab.

If W had succeeded - that is to say, if the Reds hadn't scuppered him at every turn - and set Iraq on the path to an enlightened, democratic, pro-Western course that could have served as a signal example to the other Arab countries. In so doing he would have changed world history for the better, and would have outshone Abraham Lincoln by miles (since his impact was solely in the U.S.).

So it was a bold and noble attempt of potentially historic significance.

Just my $0.02.

Supposedly one of the things the protesters are most angry about is the money that was sent to Iran is being sent to Hezbollah the Houthi rebels in Yemen and not spent on the people. I've seen tweets were that is exactly what the protesters are chanting about.

Not everyone in Iran is a religious nut, some of them just want to live their lives and not be ruled by religious nuts.

If I remember a bit about this "12th Imam" business, it illustrates the difference between Christian end-times theology and Muslim end-times. Starkly.

The Muslims must bring about the Apocalypse, by going nuts and bringing anarchy and chaos to the world. You know, got out and go ISIS. Or even better, start a nuclear holocaust.

Then, and only then, does the Messiah come. So, a good Muslim must work to bring that about -- by going full blood and gore jihad.

237 >>Didn't Trump hold a meeting of Muslim nations in Saudi Arabia months ago, with Iran excluded. Is it related to this new development in Iran

His very first international trip was to Saudi Arabia to meet with a newly formed coalition of Sunni Muslim countries. He told them that there was a new US policy where we would know longer do the fighting for them but if they took the lead we would have their back. We was excoriated in the media for this trip and called naive and disrespectful for going to Saudi Arabia first instead of doing like former presidents and going to one of our long time allies first.

Subsequently, Saudi Arabia has kept that Sunni coalition together and has been having numerous meetings discussing how to deal with terrorism and Iranian expansion including in Yemen where nobody has been watching and they have been making significant military gains against the Iranian backed Houthi rebels and I predict very soon in Lebanon against Hezbollah. And I have no doubt that Israel has been a part of a lot of this behind the scenes.

In short, yes, I think this is directly related to what we are now seeing in Iran.

I'm sure TGE has taken the gloves off on covert operations to do stuff like destabilize govts. and that sort of shit.

There was a story I read about him. Some general (who it was, didn't say) came to him for his approval of doing something in Syria/Iraq against ISIS. Something that (under previous rules) required presidential authorization.

Trump asked, "Well, what does the guy in charge on the ground say?"

"He's wants to do this, he's asking".

Trump: "Well, what the hell are you asking me for?! Do it!"

There's something I remember about a similar moment with Reagan.

I'm afraid you're right. The vast majority of people want to be taken care of. They're actively afraid of freedom, because they could fail without a safety net.

People on the right side of the bell curve are more likely to want freedom. The people on the left side want no part of it. And some people on the right side don't want it either.

Which leads me to the conclusion that the people who truly want freedom are in the minority. And that probably has something to do with why the Founders wanted nothing to do with "democracy".

The Shia-Sunni split, I dunno. IIRC there was talk that they were too integrated in the cities and institutions to make a clean split, but what we did do wasn't exactly A+ work either.

And more practically, to ensure that there's no going back.

Thank God this is Barrett's last game. Part of me is glad that Ohio State didn't make the playoff because they probably would have been against Clemson and having a month to game plan against him has to be easy. Not like you need that strong of coverage more than 15 yards downfield. Probably should have beaten Wisconsin by 3 touchdowns if the Buckeyes had a QB that could throw an accurate deep ball.

I think the whole Liberator pistol program was a giant waste of effort and resources. Very few of them ever got distributed. And if you are going to arm an insurgency in enemy-held territory, the last thing you want to do is to give them weapons that are unmistakeably made by you. Simply being in possession of a Liberator pistol, or a .45 cartridge would have been a death sentence in occupied France. It would have made more sense to manufacture cheap knockoffs of Nazi pistols, chambered to use Nazi ammo. That would at least have caused some degree of puzzlement to Gestapo agents investigating the deaths of occupiers or collaborators. Was it Resistance action, or a private vendetta?
In the case of Iran, I'd want to find out what are the standard-issue sidearms issued to Iranian cops, military, and Revolutionary Guard, and purchase or make knockoffs of same, and deliver those to the Resistance. Plausible deniability.

On the other hand, I see Kentucky beat a couple of good teams this year, and barely lost to a couple of others. All of that base infrastructure was to support the out-of-area Somalia anti-piracy patrols. The JMSDF and Chinese Navies were part of the forces off the coast of Somalia.

The Chinese had a very tough time at first, as dd the Japanese. Both did not have a lot of logistic tail for at-sea replenishment, hence the port-side bases.

ISTR the Chinese said Japanese divers were driven off before a Chinese ship in port was inspected, in one incident I heard about. Still with the bad blood between those naval forces.

549 Well since WWII resistance came up, just read an account last night about the catastrophic f***-up that was the British SOE effort in the Netherlands. It was so bad, the Gestapo guy in charge on the other end started to worry that *he* was the chump - he couldn't believe the Brits hadn't figured out he had captured all their agents and was orchestrating their messages.

He also was overwhelmed trying to make up enough stories that tracked with each other, from different captive "agents" - since he'd captured all 50+ operatives sent to link up with/organize a resistance. Der "Englandspiel".

The fiasco was never truly and squarely examined or revealed by subsequent investigations.

621 One of Britain's biggest intelligence cock-ups happened during the Phony War period when there was a struggle inside British intelligence to succeed "C" as the guy in charge.

It happened in IIRC Belgium or it might have been Holland when Britain decided to combine their two separate networks under one control. Then along comes a German SD plant saying he can get the Brits in touch with anti-Hitler factions. The local British agents did not want to deal with the possible double agent, but those in England said meet.

So a meeting was finally arranged just across from the German border. And before the locals could intervene, both British agents were nabbed and whisked back across the border where they spent the rest of the war in prison.

The big problem was SOE. The talent pool was not that deep then. There were many indications of issues, like agents transmitting duress codes without alarming the radio lasses in the UK.

Most of the agents were Dutch, and the Dutch thoroughly investigated this after the war, executing some turncoats

The best agent runners were MI-5,
there was never many of them, and their focus was deception. MI-6 and SOE should have been aligned, but for some reason MI-6 did not have as good a war.

Over-simplified, the current regime represents the "extreme" in Iran, and they've overseen nearly 40 years of domestic tyranny and murder, international terrorism unlike any other, and regional expansion of influence to where they are the principal problem for the US and its partners in the region. Not to mention collaboration with their Axis of Evil pariah partner, North Korea, on nukes and ballistic missiles.

It's difficult to see how any new regime would *not* be a big improvement. The worst external aspects of the regime do not really have wide support or resonance in other political elements there.

705 The Kansas Man who called the police and reported a hostage situation is guilty of filing a false police report which is a crime.

If the gamers can identify the man, the police can id him also.

707 When the Mullahs stole the elections in 2009, the world was watching.

And by "world", I mean Obama, Clinton, Lynch, Comey and McCabe.

708 The ones agaimst the mullahs just might make the mullahs look tame. Imagine if Tim Kaine, the VP candidate's son, obtained political power. He would be wearing a rainbow arm band as he welcomed conservatives at the camp light rail station.

711 Barky fellated the mullahs and let the Green Revolution down with many innocents killed for nothing, later curiously supporting the uprisings seeking to install the Muslim Brotherhood, e.g., Egypt.

This one looks srsly srs and dollars to donuts Trump comes out a reverse Jimmah Carter and the Ayatollah and mullahs exit leadership. There is too the rest of the ME rooting for a free Iranian people, especially Saudi Arabia, Iran's mortal foe (with Israel) which has a visionary leader in MbS.

Interesting times indeed.

712 How do you say "tea baggers" in Farsi?

713 "Because Trump has sided with the protesters against the terrorist-hiring apocalyptic dictators, David Frum, Jen Rubin, Tom Nichols, Bill Kristol, David French, and the rest of the #MuhPrinciples gang will have to swing swiftly to urging Obama-like support of the mullahs."

They should swing on trees. They've elevated their banal class culture to the level of "principles" and as a result, lie like crazy about normals. They're so vacuous that they're worse than worthless, by fronting like "conservatism" stands for the exact same elitist globalist socialist establishmentarianism as "liberalism" does.
