Mini Chess Thread 12-30-2017

Many of you have asked about when I'm going to bring back the chess thread. I really don't know the answer, but I'm going to try an experiment here and put up a smaller version. Instead of 5 problems, there will be only two, an easy problem and one that is more challenging. And of course, a bit of dress pr0n. My goal is to gradually bring in more and more material until the old thread is back, but time will tell if I can successfully do this. I don't know how this will work out, or even if I'll be able to do it every week, but let's give it a whirl and see what happens. Thank you all for your patience.

Of course, this is an open thread, so there is no such thing as being off topic.

Easier Problem - White To Play (132)

Hint: Take advantage of Black's fatally weakened king's side

20171230 - Problem 1.jpg
rnbqkb1r/pp1np1pp/2p5/3pp3/8/2NB1Q2/PPPP1PPP/R1B1K1NR w KQkq - 0 1

More Challenging Problem - Black To Play, White to Win (173)

Black is thinking about playing 1...Bxc2. Let's say he goes ahead with it. Now why is White smiling?

Hint: Create mating threats on the 7th rank

20171230 - Problem 2.jpg
r3r1k1/1q2pp1p/p5pB/1p6/8/2N1Q2P/PPP2PP1/3bR1K1 b - - 0 1

Dress Pr0n For the 'Ettes:

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - White To Play

20171230 - Problem 1.jpg
rnbqkb1r/pp1np1pp/2p5/3pp3/8/2NB1Q2/PPPP1PPP/R1B1K1NR w KQkq - 0 1

A mate in 3:

1.Qh5+ g6
2.Bxg6+ hxg6
3.Qxg6#

More Challenging Problem - Black To Play, White to Win

20171230 - Problem 2.jpg
r3r1k1/1q2pp1p/p5pB/1p6/8/2N1Q2P/PPP2PP1/3bR1K1 b - - 0 1

1...Bxc2 is bad for Black because White will then smash him with:

2.Qe5! f6 (which is the only way to stop 3.Qg7#

3.Qe6+ Kh8
4.Qf7 Rg8 (to prevent the mate on g7)
5.Rxe7 Qxe7
6.Qxe7 Raf8 (if 6...Ra7 then 7.Qxa7 and White's material and positional superiority are enough to ensure the win)

7.Nd5 Bb3
8.axb3 b4
9.Nxf6 Rf7
10.Qxf7 a5
11.Qxg8#

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

37 Finally back from a month and a half in South Florida, only to have to fly off to KC on Tuesday for a required company meeting. I'll find out then when I start back to work.

And then at the end of the month, we close on a new piece of property in a mountain community. We had been trying to buy some property in this community for the last ten years and finally found something we could afford.

And then in May, my granddaughter graduates from Clemson University. So far, the end of 2017 and beginning of 2018 is looking very good.

175 There are 20 possible first moves for White: 8 pawns to the first square, 8 pawns to the second square, and 2 possible moves for each knight.

The number of queens on the board sounds tricky. Each side has the original queen and 8 pawns, so it looks like 18 is the maximum number, but those pawns have to get past each other to promote, which means some captures are involved. I don't know the answer.

183 Interesting bit of trivia: In the early form of chess played in the Arab world, the piece next to the king was the vizier or general. A pawn reaching the eighth rank was promoted, sort of like a battlefield commission.

As chess spread to Europe, that piece gradually became identified as the queen. That made things awkward when a pawn was promoted to a queen if the original queen was still on the board, because polygamy was frowned upon in the Christian world.
