Interested in a visit Montmartre? I'm not particularly interested in visiting at this time, but the history of the place is fascinating. It was named for Saint Denis, who was beheaded by the Romans, way back in 250 AD.

According to Hilduin, Denis collected his head and carried it as far as the fontaine Saint-Denis (on modern impasse Girandon), then descended the north slope of the hill, where he died. Hilduin wrote that a church had been built "in the place formerly called Mont de Mars, and then, by a happy change, 'Mont des Martyrs'

A lot of drama and gypsum mining occurred on the hill before this:

This hill outside the city was settled because, during the nineteenth century, the emperor Napoleon III had given much of the prime land inside the city to his wealthy friends, who were charged with the task of developing it. The original inhabitants were forced to move to Paris's outskirts where they quickly established their own "town" sans the rules and regulations of the city.

That's part of the reason why Montmartre quickly became a popular drinking area, and by the late eighteenth century, along with the liquor came a number of entertainment establishments that were less than reputable, like Moulin Rouge and Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat).

After the defeat of Napoleon III, Montmartre became the center of the short-lived Paris Commune.

But It's almost New Years Eve. Let's discuss music and dancing. Montmartre is, of course, the home of the famous French Can-can, originally danced by both sexes.

The music we know as "the Can-can" is actually "The Infernal Gallop" from Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld":

The operetta is an irreverent parody and scathing satire on Gluck and his Orfeo ed Euridice and culminates in the risque Galop infernal ("Infernal Galop") that shocked some in the audience at the premiere. Other targets of satire, as would become typical in Offenbach's burlesques, are the stilted performances of classical drama at the Comedie-Francaise and the scandals in society and politics of the Second French Empire.

Bringing Offenbach's spirit closer to today, here's what some guy in Poland did with the piece:

Offenbach also wrote some music that wasn't satirical.

Europeans have a different sense of humor. This is what some of them do during an evening out. Is this sexist?

Are you going out for some fabulous nightlife on New Years Eve? Or are you staying home with a few drinks and snacks? There are some fine recipes herein. See the sidebar.

Have a great weekend and a great New Year.

8 OK, so, I saw Springsteen last year for the first time in like 30 years and I noticed the venue was NOT sold out.

It dawned on me as I looked around that as old as I was, I was younger than most in attendance . I thought, either most Springsteen fans are like my Mom's Guy Lombardo fans or the oil bust hurt my city worse than I thought.

I think they are afraid the Public outrage over what the Court did, would kill the FISA court system, which is in the process of having Congress renew it.

That is just infuriating. The "swatter" doesn't even care that someone died because of what he did. He talks from beginning to end like his actions were no big deal.

With any luck, he'll be someone's girlfriend in prison very soon.

However, this is what drives me insane about all movies that take place in Philadelphia dating back to Rocky and earlier: no one has a Philly accent!! The public may be clamoring for faster response to reports of mayhem in schools, movie theaters etc, but only a few idiots really want the police to bust down doors and come in with guns blazing to break up a family fight, even a deadly one. SWAT deployment into a home w/o a burglar alarm or other indication of a break-in should require on-site fact gathering before they go into action mode.

Trump is about to become the first president since Dwight D. Eisenhower 64 years ago to skip a visit to California during his first calendar year in office. And he doesn't appear to have any plans to take Air Force One to the country's most populous and economically powerful state before he marks his first full year in office Jan. 20.

Offenbach was not the only guy who wrote musical satires. In the Gardening Thread is Saint-Saens' parody of The Infernal Gallop. I used to play it on the piano.

Saint-Saens did not allow publication of some of the Carnival of the Animals until he died, in order to prevent offense to other composers. He did release The Swan.

265 The public may be clamoring for faster response to reports of mayhem in schools, movie theaters etc, but only a few idiots really want the police to bust down doors and come in with guns blazing to break up a family fight, even a deadly one. SWAT deployment into a home w/o a burglar alarm or other indication of a break-in should require on-site fact gathering before they go into action mode.
Posted by: PaleRider, simply irredeemable at December 30, 2017 12:09 PM (84F5k)

That's just it. The fake call was actually one of the few situations you should activate SWAT for (if real, of course). But too many departments tend to use SWAT for all sorts of shit from minor drug busts to person of interest track downs.

It's interesting if you watch First 48 (IMO it's must watch reality TV). Typically, at some point a strong suspect in the murder is identified. Sometime that person hears about it and turns himself in. Others the PD has to track down that person.

I've seen everything from 2 detectives with vests and pistols knocking on doors (as it was done for a hundred years) to a group of detectives and cops to the SWAT team. A few years back on one of the episodes the SWAT team had a discharge while breaching the house and killed a young girl asleep on the living room house.

I'm all for the cop going home at the end of a shift but the overuse of SWAT IMO tends to increase the chance that an innocent or unarmed offender gets wasted instead. Too little training, too much adrenaline and tactics more like military combat CQB with fingers on triggers ready to kill.

It's actually even more annoying than an NYC or Chicago accent. And before anyone bitches, I grew up w an NYC accent but tamed it.

Posted by: keena at December 30, 2017 11:55 AM (RiTnx)

I lived there for a few years (actually in north Delaware, which is linguistically just a suburb of Philadelphia), and also came to hate that accent. So much so that, even though I do pretty good regional dialect impressions, I cannot do Philly except for single words...cannot form it into coherent sentences.

Your description is right on. If you say "wooder" instead of "water", you are very close to saying it like you are from Philly. Also, they have a peculiar way of saying the letter "l", like they are swallowing/choking on it. Thus one of the tells for a real Philly accent is the way they say the word "Philadelphia".

On a related side note, although I am originally from SoCal, when on business trips I would occasionally get asked if I was from upstate New York (i.e. around Schenectady). My mother was, and I must have picked it up from her (and her mother, who lived with us), but to this day I have no idea what defines that accent, except that it doesn't sound anything like NYC. Perhaps you, with your NYC background, have an idea how you could recognize someone from upstate?

CA new gun laws have had a chilling effect on our gun club, too.

In my conversations with a couple of club officers, the club seems to have decided to put rifle CQB matches on hold, because they don't want to have to deal with people who may show up with illegal, in CA, firearms.

I believe the chilling effect started when we had local cops shooting with us, investigating one of our members, a nationally ranked shooter, who eventually went to jail for a few months on gun charges.

The gun charge was BS and it's not like there wasn't something else the cops could have done with their time. Oddly enough, though, the cops thought it was perfectly safe to shoot with a bunch of people carrying guns. Imagine that.

Anyway, after finding out our local cops would come after our club or a club member, I guess it was decided to put a hold on certain matches.

305 So I went searching to see some of the stuff about Iran's last effort at voicing opposition to their regime in 2009. First thing I found of note was from several months in earlier in February of 2009 where its noted that Obama's team had been talking to Iran and Syria for MONTHS. After being President for less than two weeks, and the media is losing their shit over Trump's team having any contact at all with Russia.

307 Blake, that's sickening, and surprising.

We get somewhat frequent questions at a range where I am an RO about the "CA legal" stuff. Club policy is that we don't enforce laws - we enforce club rules. And no instances of any law enforcement doing the truly s***y dick-move of actually going after anyone for gear. That's one sick, off the rails PD you've got there.

One suggestion: ban law enforcement from matches. This has been discussed at the place I shoot matches (different place than the other club). Smaller place. And former law enforcement are among those leading the discussion.

As to new ammo law - still waiting for the lawsuits to drop. Impossible to believe the usual suspects won't have multiple lines of attack. Though I'm thinking the best one would be the one based on principle, and the 2A, not inter-state commerce: burdening a right. Sentient beings already marvel at the lawlessness of the US, the rot of the judiciary and the hollowing out of the constitution in so many respects.

But piling burden upon indefensible harassing burden on firearm owners, none of them related to public safety - while such things as voting do not even require ID documents - is as good a monument to America's degradation as any.

Interesting if an Iranian revolution were successful and they became an ally instead of one of the "Death to America" gang. It could be symbiotic.

One area where we might get some help from them would be in the area of refugees. We could incentivize them to rehome our Syrian and Somali refugees, and perhaps some of Europe's as well. If their economy were booming and they had an Islamic culture awaiting for them, it would be a welcome development for all, except for Democrat politicians who would be losing votes and who would be losing an Identity Politics/white guilt bludgeon to force Americans to stop expressing or promoting their native religious beliefs and culture.

Not so fun fact: Springsteen (born 1947) is the same age today (6 that Guy Lombardo (born 1902) was in 1970 and Lawrence Welk (born 1903) was in 1971, the year his show went from network to syndication. Meanwhile, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Paul McCartney (all born 1943) are the same age that Lombardo was in 1976, when he did his final NYE show (he died in 1977).

All these mega-scandals (4 and counting), with tantalizing hints that, at last, things will break wide open with IG reports and documentary evidence etc. - up against the corruption of the law enforcement establishment, the uselessness of the political branches, the indifference/ignorance/dumbing-down of the citizenry - it's almost like a physics question.

What happens when the unstoppable force of multiple mega-scandals that are well documented and undeniable meets the immovable object of institutional integrity collapse, Beltway degradation, and popular disengagement?

Trust me, we understand we're not cops and we have no control over what people bring to matches.

However, the process is the punishment any more.

DA's are looking to make a name for themselves and are interested in padding their resume so they can move on and up. So, DA's just don't care how much it costs to investigate and prosecute, because they know, in the end, they have deeper pockets then most people.

My point being the Bill of Rights and the presumption of innocence are pretty much gone any more. Our club has every reason to believe they could very well become part of a "kitchen sink" investigation and we know we cannot afford to have the cops and DA on our backs.

As of right now, we have every reason to believe the cops would gladly come after us if we had a bunch of people show up at a match with "illegal" guns. And, since CQB matches are advertised, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the cops would shoot the match, hoping to catch a few people with firearms they shouldn't have and then our club getting hit with "Aiding and Abetting." (we have good reason to believe this could happen)

332 Taxonomy question. How many mega-scandals?

1 - IRS

2 - Clinton crime wave @ State - Espionage Act, Federal Records Act, various anti-bribery/conflict of interest laws, and associated obstruction of justice

3 - Uranium-1

4 - FBI/DOJ "investigation" of Clinton crime wave and Uranium-1

5 - Hezbollah investigation quashed for Iran deal purposes

6 - FISA/surveillance/"dossier" re Trump campaign/transition team

Seems 2, 3, and 4 overlap so much they merge into one giant rambling complicated scandal. And even 6 might be incorporated in that blob.

337 Iranian protests started over the poor economy, among other issues. What is truly amazing is the the Iranian GDP in 2015 was a little over $395 billion dollars, it's fourth straight year of decline (from a peak in 2011 of $592 billion), and in 2016 Obama gave the country back it's $150 billion. And that's the admitted amount! Of course, we all believe there were any number of side deals that meant billions more from the US to Iran, but that's beside the real point, which is that in cash the Iranians got an amount equal to nearly 40% of GDP. Cash money.

How could the country still be in terrible straits? Well, funding war all over the middle east (Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Gaza) takes a lot of money.

360 Blake, thanks, I know what CQB is, was just wondering how"CQB"-ish it was.

Steel targets @400 yds is not really CQB, of course. Typically CQB would be very short range, as the name implies. The action handgun matches I do involve movement, cover, paper and steel, depending on the month.

There are action rifle matches with movement/cover, steel out to 200 yds. I used to use my Mosin-Nagant, but the only other bolt-action guy switched to an SKS, so I switched to M1.

Both the Mosin and Garand have a tendency to cause trouble - cut the chains the steels hang on - but the contrast with most shooters, who use ARs, is fun. Can be difficult to determine if the AR shots are hits at all, whereas the Mosin/Garand hits - if they don't take down the target entirely - cause a dust cloud and a swinging steel.

We can ban CA law enforcement all we want but, in the end, they'll still send someone.

As for CA compliant, that's been discussed but, we don't want to be in the position of setting ourselves up to act as cops because if someone cheats, and they will, we're still screwed.

CA is a difficult place to be a gun owner, to be honest.

CA is using lawfare against gun owners and the DA's and cops are more than happy to play along.

It was fueled by Slavophile expansion and a feeling of common cultural ground with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Spoiler: It was a resounding failure. Cossacks, being Cossacks, soon resorted to rapine and slaughter, they pissed off the local tribes and the Europeans, and their colony was shelled by the French. Ashinov was exiled to the Volga River region.
