If you're low or depressed, and need a reason to feel good about yourself, take this quiz on Roman numerals. You'll get 100%. I thought everyone knew the Roman numeric system with all the L's and X's and stuff. I know it because I had it beaten into me by fascist nuns back when I was in 3rd or 4th grade in Catholic school, so I don't think it's particularly difficult. What *do* they teach kids in schools these days?

I had thought the Swedes had been clever enough to keep them in no-go zones. I guess now they're stepping it up a notch though and attempting to "integrate" them, the quicker to wipe out the indigenous population.

The thing to keep in mind: the parents think they deserve this, the children are probably brainwashed into thinking they deserve it. The "refugees" certainly think they have the right to do this.

Therefore, everyone's happy. They're all getting what they want. There's no reason to think of this as unfortunate.

Amazon tells me that my copy of the Moron Cookbook is at the post office and I should go get it.

I have to go to the post office to get my mail because the snow plow keeps knocking my mail box down and throwing it off into the forest. and if the cookbook is that big, they wouldn't put it in the mailbox anyway.

Before I can go to the post office I have to clear the snow from my driveway.

If I can make it to the post office, I should continue on the other twenty five miles to walmart and get groceries because the cookbook recipes will require stuff I don't have, like food.

The weather service says it might not snow for a couple of days but the roads are still ice.

131 I think the Swedes have an inconsistent viewpoint which is part of their problem. On the one hand, they want to think of the "refugees" as human beings, so they allow them into their schools and communities, and attempt every possible way to be nice and accommodating to them.

On the other hand, they regard them as subhuman, like animals. And animals aren't responsible for their own actions. To punish them would be to punish a sweet, innocent creature that had no idea what it was doing.

Because of this inconsistency of thought, they feel morally obligated to allow animals to roam among them, and morally obligate to do nothing when these animals attack, maim and kill them.

258 exdem13, Churchill had his own plans for Norway that his own government initially resisted. Of course the Norwegians were not keen either.

But Narvik was the shipping point for Swedish ore sailing to Germany.

As the Kreigsmarine was landing the forces to take Norway, the Royal Navy's plan R4 was kicking off to occupy Norway. HMS Glowworm, while searching for a sailor swept overboard, encountered the invasion force lead by Lutzow and Admiral Hipper. Instead of fleeing the outgunned destroyer turned and rammed Admiral Hipper before sinking

Meanwhile the main part of R4 swept into Narvik after the Germans took it and shot the Hell out of the German navy.

By the end of the Norway operation, Germany had lost half of its destroyers, Admiral Blucher, another cruiser, and many of the supply ships. But they controlled Norway.

They let in a mix of violent sociopaths, and they set up arbitrary rules by which they ignore them, or give them favored treatment that allows them to abuse other students. The parents think, "Oh well, these are the experts in education, psychology and sociology. I suppose they know best and we ought not complain". To move away from that is probably impossible in Sweden.

It used to be that men were in shape because they played sports or did manual labor, not because they spent hours every day in the equivalent of beauty parlors.

People complain that the standard for women's beauty is too much determined by gay male fashion designers. But I think increasingly the standard for male looks has also passed into that territory.

Peter Strzok is married to a woman named Melissa Hodgman. Hodgman is a career lawyer with the SEC which overseas corruption in public companies and other large financial entities like say the Trump companies or the Clinton Global Initiative

Hours after hundreds of thousands of Hillary's emails were found on Weiner's laptop, Hodgman was promoted to the deputy director of SEC's Enforcement Division.

Check out the date, October 14, 2016.

Interesting....Before we moved we had a lot of refugee families at the public pool. The kids were terrors, the moms ignored them, stayed huddled together talking. Kids would splash, yell in my son's face, just all around feral jerks. If the dad was there he would be swimming, enjoying himself while mom was covered head to toe by the side of the pool.

369 The Sweden story is beyond disgusting. I think this is part of a non-judgmental European sensibility that has been around for a while.

In 1993, Monica Seles, number 1 ranked woman's tennis player in the world, was stabbed while in a tennis match by a psycho. The scumbag was seemingly infatuated with Steffi Graf and thought that by stabbing Seles, he was helping Graf regain her #1 ranking.

The criminal received a suspended sentence and probation.

Miss Seles, in addition to being injured and traumatized, was affected for many years afterwards, not only by the stabbing itself, but also by the insanely lenient sentence.

When a government refuses to protect its own people, and the people do not demand protection, that country is destined for decay and rot.

We're seeing that in Europe now, and seeing stirrings of it here.

372 I'm re-posting this from earlier today. If you look up the Wiki on Michael Hastings his death looks fishy as hell, like a possible bona fide Deep State murder.

---

The MSNBC analyst who thinks voters should not determine policy, Elise Jordan, was married to a reporter named Michael Hastings who died in a mysterious car crash, Hastings had embarrassed and criticized the Obama administration. Like a number of other reporters he was spied on by the Obama administration.

In the period before his death he was agitated and afraid. He said his car was being tampered with. The car finally sped out of control in a manner at least one commentator said was consistent with a cyber attack.

Small world.

You'd think she'd be more skeptical of an autonomous government that's unaffected by the wishes of the voters, aka the Deep State.

Die Hard is a christmas movie because christmas movies must have at least 2 of the following:

-Take Place entirely or predominantly during the christmas season
-Prominently include christmas music, or imagery
-Include "Christmas themes" as central to the plot

Die Hard satisfies all 3.

438 There were a few factors to consider in regards to the Kreigsmarine.

Until they got bases in Norway and France, the chances of any surface combatants getting loose were slim because of starting point. Even Brest proved to be sub-optimal as it was in range of the RAF.

Hitler was never a big supporter of the Germany Navy and his relationship with Admiral Raeder about how useless the navy was became quite acrimonious. So in the end ships like Tirpitz and Sharnhorst became attack dogs chained to Norwegian fjords more often growling than being actual threats even as British sought to neutralize them. Graf Spee and Scheer had the same effect, diverted and diluted the British naval forces but was never truly decisive. Unlike the U-boats.

Raeder and Hitler also shared a similar fear, of losses. Hitler because of bad PR, hence Deutschland became Lutzow. Raeder because his fleet was so much smaller than the British. And the one time German ships were ordered to actually engage the British fleet, Bismarck was gang-raped by the Royal Navy after only sinking HMS Hood. Then Tirpitz almost succumbing to the same fate at the hands of more Swordfish made Hitler issue the order the ship would never leave Norway if there was a hint of a British carrier in the area.

Underneath all this after reading German Raider Atlantis is some shoddy planning on the part of the Germans. Even though they had experience in WWI with commerce raiders, for WWII the Germans were disorganized in how to equip and use them.

467 There is already more than enough hard evidence to prove the massive corruption of Hillary, the FBI, the DOJ, and the Obama domestic spying machine.
It doesn't matter how much more comes out nor how many crimes have been committed.
No scandal will come of it.

You cannot have a "scandal" without the media.
The Valerie Plame incident in reality was a non-event but in perception it was a Big Scandal. Worthy of a movie it was! Pravda made it so.

And since there will be no scandal, there will be no legal penalty. After all, if a real crime were committed, wouldn't Pravda tell us so? Wouldn't there be Outrage?
If no Outrage, no big deal. Any prosecution would just be "political," probably fascist --- and therefore deserving of Outrage against the VRWC.

That said, I welcome any hearings, gathering of documents, etc. For the record. For the Truth. Even if hardly anyone will know or care.

521 we can only hope the NYPD and others kept copies of the evidence they passed on to the FBI and other entities in DC. Because it seems pretty clear Obama/Holder etc ... the whole lot were scrubbing evidence as fast as they could.

Even when Trump was in office, someone was confidently leaking texts of his phone conversations with foreign leaders. They seem quite confident that they have control of the real levers of power.

So far, except for a few emails that show incredible bias, they don't have the hard evidence. They have "hints" of an insurance policy that are maybe enough to get them fired (with full pension), but not hung from a lamppost as deserved.

They had/have Lois Lerner, but she seems happily retired. They had Hillary ... FBI covered as much as possible, MFM did its job ...

It better be one helluva job on that "report". And will the prosecutions be under way when we get the report, or is the report the end. "Mistakes were made ... move along, nothing else to see here"

522 "It is odd that branches of the British Army got the "Royal" tag at one time or another: Royal Artillery, Royal Tank Corps, and probably others. I wonder what the rationale for giving these names was?"

I'm pretty sure it had to with where the funding was coming from. Starting at the Civil Wars, Parliament made sure to keep control of all the army funding, so that no King could use the army against them again. However, Parliament was also very cheap about big ticket items such as cannons and ships (what Parliament or Congress isn't?) so that left an opening where a King could step in and get same fame and popularity by finding a way to fund them himself.

Despite the surveys showing low public trust in media, despite the existence of the web and other sources and voices.

Doesn't tell us how it will turn out. But validation of Margarita's thesis stares us in the face every day - or rather, doesn't.

Any of the mega-scandals - real ones, confirmed, about which there is no doubt, and only the details remain in some cases unknown - surrounding Clinton, and now the FBI/DOJ, if they occurred under a GOP president ...... do I even have to finish the sentence?

As I say, you wouldn't be able to find the weather forecasts or the sports scores, so insane would the media hysteria be, so blanket would the coverage be, if even a *diluted version* of any these things had happened under a GOP prez.

At the time, the IRS scandal was the worst one in American history - in terms of how outrageous an inversion of the American spirit and principle of governance it was, weaponizing a key govt. agency to persecute people on political grounds. It's now got company. FBI/DOJ. And the Clinton Crime Wave at State.

Any one of these dwarfs anything that ever happened in US history. Watergate wasn't one weekend of work in any of these lurid spectacles.

And where's the media frenzy? Questions being shouted at principals every time they appear? Dem politicians forced to squirm and take a position? There's a chance things will turn out right, but not only is the media vastly more distorted than it has ever been, close to half the country just doesn't care about rule of law, not in the slightest.

Could be. After further thought, it may have something to do with the British Army's Regimental System. For example, the Royal Artillery is formally titled the Royal Regiment of Artillery, I believe. The Kriegsmarine didn't have the best record - always wondered how much of that was due to seamanship or lack of damage control training...Posted by: Anon a mouse at December 14, 2017 12:24 PM (MINbv)

I don't think it's a lack of seamanship as much as it's Germans aren't a seafaring people
====
I recommend the books Dreadnought and The Steel Castles as excellent treatment of the age of the battleship and related naval thinking. The technical and design matters could be their own thread. However, the author's contention was in the end the German Navy lost out in the psychological and strategical venue.
1. Both Kaiser Bill and Hitler were reluctant to risk their big beautiful and expensive ships. the Royal Navy risked their big beautiful ships all the time. (Or at least Winston made them do it. ) Avoiding costly battle gains no victories.
2. The German Navy in both world wars never had a good strategic plan for taking on the Royal Navy. Their obsessive min-maxing never worked because any appearance by German ships generally brought the strongest possible response from the Royal Navy.
3. The Royal Navy had a reputation as the #1 navy in the world, ready to prove it any time, any place. "Rule Britannia! Britannia rules the waves!!" Every German captain who faced a Royal Navy force at sea did so with that song playing in his head.

At which point I think they rescinded the policy, in an outbreak of common sense.

Overall I think so too. A recent article argued that net neutrality impeded progress because in essence it mandated, among other things, that if everyone didn't have something, no one could have it. You could see where Obongo could sign on to that idea, and where he would take it.

Don't know if that was true, but if so, it would make improvements difficult to effect. Instead of a gradual roll-out of an improvement, with early adopters paying top dollar and thereby financing the further roll out, a company would have to have an enormous war chest to roll out the improvement everywhere, at the same time, and at the same price.

637 So everyone is always confused about Roman numerals... they make math so unnecessarily hard, right?

It's because of their calculating devices--they used a variation of the Salamis tablet... or pebble board. Calculii is actually "pebble" or something like that.

With a pebble board, you use pebbles to represent numbers (they eventually devolved into abacuses). Putting pebbles on various lines was like entering numbers. It was easier to use a negative concept, so you could use less pebbles: for example, you can enter the number nine as one pebble on the 5 line, and 4 on the one line--which is 9. You use 5 pebbles. Or, you could put one pebble on the ten line, and one on the "negative 1" side, also equalling 9, and only use 2 pebbles. So: 9 is represented by VIIII, or IX. When people have replicated the roman counting boards, then Roman numerals totally make sense, versus our system of 10 digits today.

Counting boards also explain the ancient practice of using base 10, 12, and base 60 numbers--the Babylonian base 60 system on a counting board allows a huge range of numbers to be used with only a few pebbles.

Counting boards actually were pretty ingenious little devices, and someone who could run one could do all sorts of calculations a lot quicker than we would imagine. Abacuses are less powerful actually. More portable though.

NN was a SOP to content providers, wherein the FCC, and admin agency overstepped it's authorizing legislation. JEF couldn't get crap through Congress, so he usurped Congress' role, again. Otherwise, it was another instance of fedzilla creating opportunities for graft, where, previously, there had been none.

The hysteria over NN was misplaced, as there are sufficient FTC and other agency powers to protect consumers. The repeal of NN unleashes the horrors of internet of 2015 on us, you know, where google, facebook, twitter were not censoring conservative viewpoints.

Imagine your electric company demanding you pay more for electricity if you use a GE refrigerator versus another brand instead of charging for the amount of electricity you use.

Posted by: Hikaru at December 14, 2017 01:15 PM (CMbMd)

Basically it boiled down to forcing all content providers to pay the same hourly rate for transmitting their content regardless of how much bandwidth they used.
Look at this way, should your neighbor who uses 10,000 gal of water a month pay the same water bill as you who only used 2,000 gal?

What the government got out of it beside bribes from big content providers was a foot in the door for control of internet content. The last place conservatives can get real news.

Net neutrality isn't.

It sounds like a levelling of the playing field, but it actually tilts it.

Before the FCC decided to regulate ISPs, the ISPs and edge providers were regulated the same way - pretty much not at all.

The FCC decided that the ISPs were Title II entities and that they could regulate them.

Edge providers remain unregulated by the FCC.

Presumably they will have to disclose this in the contract, yes? Then I have no problem with them QOSing themselves out of my business. I'll go with another of the 7 possible providers I have available.

668 As I understand the issue, without Net Neutrality, Google, Facebook, Netflix and possibly their users may have higher fees, because they use up a huge chunk of bandwidth. With Net Neutrality, every company pays the same no matter how much they use.

So, the Obama era Net Neutrality rules favored huge providers like Google and Facebook, who had contributed heavily in order to bring this about. The change made today removes the political advantage Google and Facebook had bought, which is why those company's are astroturfing some protests to try and pretend this is some political issue.

Its not a political issue, its just a matter of do we allow corporate giants to buy the type of regulations they think will serve them best.

I think they also feel guilty merely for being a first world nation. It's an irrational feeling akin to survivor guilt. It doesn't really obligate you to anything, it's not really a moral notion. Let leftists leverage it to gaslight people.

Exactly. NN supporters are regurgitating content provider agit-prop. You can be against NN simply because the FCC does not have that authority without Congressional enabling legislation.

Get Congress to do its job if you want NN so bad. Otherwise, quit your bitching.

677 Grump- I'd be on your side if everyone had 7 providers available to them. Instead, something like half the population only has one and it is not practical to introduce many new ISP's because of the infrastructure demands - i.e. having your roads in a perpetual state of being dug up for new lines to be run.

Don't really have time to explain it to you but I worked in the field of building and helping maintain the internet for years including things like peering and transit agreements.
