Food Thread: Our Long National Nightmare Has Just Begun: The Moron Cookbook Is Here!
[Why bacon? Why the hell not?]
Horde, we did it! We, the Moron Horde of Ace of Spades HQ, are published authors! Congratulations, and many, many thanks to ALL OF YOU who sent in recipes. The cookbook is a wonderful sample of Moron cuisine from all over our country and even around the world. We loved reading the stories of how you all came to have these recipes, and feel honored that you shared the best of your kitchen with us. Besides the contributors, we also wish to thank the following people by name (well, nic): Bandersnatch, for all the artwork, including that awesome cover; Muldoon, for his limericks sprinkled throughout the book; our proofreaders – JTB and Mrs. JTB, moki, Miley the Duchess, westminsterdogshow, cfo mom, and booknlass; and RedMindBlueState, who gave us some valuable advice early on in this endeavor. THANK YOU!! Thank you also to everyone who encouraged us from the very start, including our early cookbook committee! Very special thanks goes to CBD, without whom this project would never have gotten off the ground (CBD, you’d better not change one word of this). He went to Ace for us and requested and received permission to go forward with this project, posted the submission website for us on the sidebar for three weeks, gave us much-appreciated counsel behind the scenes, devoted lots of space in the food thread to this effort, whenever we asked him to and even when we didn’t, and did so much more. We couldn’t have done it without him, and that is the truth. And of course, our heartfelt thanks to Ace, who let us dream up this audacious project and see it through to completion right here on the blog. At his request, the net proceeds will all go to charity. We will split the money 50/50 between Toys for Tots and Fisher House. And finally, because I (bluebell) am writing this, I wish to thank Weasel, for proposing this project, bringing me into it, and doing all the hard work, and no, I’m not kidding. He did a ton of research, talked to countless publishers on the phone, submitted applications and paperwork for all sorts of things, handled all the communication with our publisher, and did all the technical work with CreateSpace, Kindle Direct Publishing, and Amazon. And, AND, was very supportive and patient with his plodding co-editor. If it were not for Weasel, there would be no Moron cookbook. Weasel, you’re the best.

Here's a Christmas cookie recipe that sounds like fun.
(Annotated slightly by Bluebell)
• 1 ½ cups sugar
• 1 egg
• 1 teaspoon vanilla
• 2 ½ cups flour
• 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ½ teaspoon almond extract
• red food coloring
• ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
• 1 1-oz. square unsweetened chocolate, melted Line bottom and sides of a 9 x 5 x 3 inch loafpan with waxed paper. Cream butter in a large mixing bowl; gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add egg; beat well. Stir in vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl; add to creamed mixture, beating just until blended. Divide dough into thirds. Add almond extract and 5 drops red food coloring to one portion; spread mixture evenly in prepared pan. (You’ll have to pat it in there.) Add pecans to second portion; spread mixture evenly over dough in pan. Add melted chocolate to remaining portion; spread mixture evenly over dough in pan. Cover pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Turn dough out of pan, and remove waxed paper. Cut dough in half length-wise; cut each half crosswise into 1/8-inch slices. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool. Store in airtight container. Yield: 5 dozen (although I must slice them a little thinner; I usually get at about 6 dozen).
Oh hell, I completely forgot to tell you maniacs that there will be three cookbooks given away during this thread. Hopefully Weasel will explain, but in the meantime, there are three random numbers that have been chosen, and the authors of comments that correspond to those numbers will receive a free cookbook! Won't surprise me if in a couple years they start offering "SUPER Prime," where for $200-$300 a year (instead of $100) they send you everything FedEx overnight.

Frustrating when you're excited for something. And I can understand delays during this time of year-- everybody and their dog is mailing tons of stuff out-- but I've found Amazon has trouble getting out items on time throughout the rest of the year, as well.

We understand that some people feel that way about Amazon, but they really represented the best solution for printing and distribution. It is available for retail sales channels to pick and carry, should they want to, but the printing will still be done by Amazon.

Rare to medium rare is how I like my steaks cooked.
I want to buy my husband some tomahawk steaks from Allen Brothers for Christmas. They're really expensive. I miss having a butcher shop.
I'm going to ask the local market if they can cut me some of those first.

What I liked most was there was no frou frou stuff, you know, lilac and lavender and gold leaf. All the ones with nuts had a great nutty flavor. Even the deplorable white chocolate one with tart lemon creme was delish. Every single piece was quality

It's bad here today. It was supposed to be over 80 degrees and it's 50 because of the smoke. It's raining ash here, the smoke has blocked out the sun all the way to at least Cayucos.
Monticeto is under mandatory evacuation in some parts, rincon has burned. The fire is in the hills above summerland, carpinteria, and Monticeto. My niece goes to Westmont college and she's evacuated to San Luis.
This is the worst fire I've seen.

I can get harris ranch beef. He really liked those tomahawk steaks. We had those at a restaurant in Hawaii. They were Allen brothers. I told him I would order some and I never did.
He doesn't want anything for Christmas and I think it'll make him happy. Unless el rancho market can cut some for me or order them. Hitching post may cut me some too if I ask.

You bread the fish and fry it in oil. Cut the fish into chunks first. Serve with corn tortillas, chopped cabbage, chopped onions, cilantro, lime wedges and salsa.

In the cookie recipe, is the salt necessary chemically for the cookies to rise properly? I make one kind of cookies somewhat regularly, and I omit the called for salt to no apparent ill effect.

We usually cook up a pile of food on Sunday then eat it over the course of the week. So it's not as extravagant an expense as it seems.

And I am celebrating because the children's Christmas Pageant is done and finished for the year, and I don't have to worry about another one for 8-9 months!! Only two nosepickers!!! Woohoo!!!!!!! For my food contribution today, we were making chili for dinner, and didn't have a mix, so I made one up. I'll let you know how it tastes, but this is good advice to check your spice cabinet more than once a month to make sure you are well supplied. And now is a good time to buy spices because there are coupons, and buy two get one free specials that help with the cost.

boneless skinless chicken thighs browned with onions, chipotle powder and garlic and ground pepper.
Add hot Pace picante sauce, simmer and slowly break down the chicken. (I use a wooden spoon so as to protect the cooking surface)
Simmer until moister cooks off, serve as tacos with regular fixin's, save leftover meat for chicken enchiladas. (freeze)
Takes a while to make but the house smells great during the process.

Uncle Palp, there are over 500 recipes in there. Weasel did an index by contributor's nic because you can well imagine that some of the names didn't necessarily convey any information about the recipe, lol.
But our goal was to use at least one recipe from everyone who sent in a food recipe, unless we had a serious formatting issue or sent numerous emails for clarification that were not answered, which only happened to very few. There's always the possibility of error, which would be all mine. But anyone who sent us a food recipe should be in there.

I ordered the hardcopy cookbook because it is so awkward to lug the desktop into the kitchen. I suppose I could hand copy the recipes from the Kindle app. Of course, if I had a printer, which I don't, I could print out the recipes..
So anyway, Amazon doesn't know when the cookbook will ship; they will email when it does. Don't know when it will arrive in the mail during the Christmas rush; could be January.
All y'all make it sound so interesting that I couldn't wait, so bought an eBook copy. I notice you start right off with the liquor. Makes sense.
Mark Andrews Edward's Beef and Noodles reminded me of a similar dish my mother used to make. Simple enough for an old and lazy loner. Can of beef, package of frozen egg noodles, can of stewed tomatoes and there you go. Variations, as many as you can imagine. Thanks for the reminder.
Mother wasn't a great cook, but she made Toll house Chocolate Chips cookies that were unbeatable; soft, not crisp, full of chocolate. Best when right out of the oven with cold milk. I could sit in the kitchen and eat'm faster than she could bake'm. Unfortunately the secret recipe she used she never wrote down.

we have a Fisher-Pykel (sp?) two door dishwasher. bought at Lowe's as a floor model @half off.
it's awesome: they are designed to be kosher, hence the two drawers, but we like it because you don't have to wait for every dish and glass in the cupboards to get dirty before you run a load. and, on the Fast/Eco setting, it's 38 minutes, start to finish.
that means, IF you're entertaining, you can clean as you go, and not have a huge pile of stuff to wash at the end, or the next day. seems to be reliable too, as we've only had 1 problem, solved by a single replacement part, in over 10 years of steady use.

After that, and on topic, we were on a quest for Trader Joe's. We had one in Reston, and were without one for 6 long years. I missed their hummus.
We wove in and around shopping areas on the quest. No iPhone. No tablet. As primitive as can be.
I did not want to stop at Macy's. It was close. But she agreed with me. Onward to Trader Joe's. We continued moving east when we saw *sob* a Container Store. We had to stop. My Elfa goddess wanted to stop so bad. Alas, it's a private company. I'd buy stock after that visit.
Finally Trader Joe's. But where was the 2 Buck Chuck? -- our Ur-source for cooking chicken? Only in the Missouri store. Still, we stocked up on a few items and headed home; West into the late sunset. All the frozen and refrigerated goodies like hummus, quinoa, and tortellini were in the cooler for the trip home. And Dover Sole for later.

I do not have a Bosch ~ but I have several friends who do ~ whose kitchens I have cooked in. A lot. And the Bosches are excellent. As set forth the drawers are a great way to run things as they allow half loads. They also clean very, very well. I highly recommend.

I've got one, Infidel Had it for about 3 years now. No problems at all so far. It is extremely quiet, and does a great job cleaning. Also has an express cycle (30 min.) which comes in handy.
My favorite features: I got the one with the third rack, which is a small rack at the tippy top that holds all your knives, forks, spoons, etc. Really, really frees up space not having to have a utensil basket. Also, it doesn't have a heating element for drying, so I don't have to worry about putting plastic on the bottom rack. I don't know how it dries them, but it does. (I did read something in the owner's manual about condensation, blah blah blah, but I just glazed over it because, you know, sciencey.)

You know what's funny ~ there is a fondue restaurant down the street from were I live in Westchester. Have not seen one since the last time I went skiing in Colorado. ( Breckenridge) a few years back. I am sure there must be one somewhere in Manhattan ~ but have never seen one ~ and yet here's one down the street. DO love fondue. Had it years ago in Switzerland and very much enjoyed. The Redux kids love it now too after having it in CO.

Actually, sandwich-sliced Swiss and Fritos are pretty good... if you have no other bread or cheese but do have wine.
'Minds me... several days ago, one of the Horde Back East, mentioned something about proper NYC bagels. (Oy!) Milady mentioned as how she had some bagels in the freezer - bet they're just as good. Then we larfed until we couldn't see straight.

I looked at the key numbers of a Bosch dishwasher and a Samsung and decided to save myself about $500. No regrets.
They're both quiet as hell and do a great job. I do like the sterilize (not what it's called) feature on the Samsung.
You can perform surgery with the stuff after it's done. If necessary.

There use to be (or maybe still is) a restaurant in Chicago that was all fondue. One of my favorite places when we lived there. You had to have reservations and I think they only did 2 seatings a night.

The really funny thing is I spent more. My wife was impressed. I'm getting with the program fine.
I wanted to get some stout containers to stow scientific glassware for my business. Some of those distilling heads and columns are pretty pricy. It's a lot cheaper than cabinetry, rolling toolboxes, or workbenches with bespoke shelves.
My cookbooks arrive the 15th, since I never pay for shipping with Amazon. One of the copies is my Christmas present for my foodie neighbor up the hill. She had a massive collection of cookbooks that fill a bookcase up to the ceiling. She showed me her family cookbook from 1908.

I'm in Jersey, rickl. If I order on Amazon Prime with the 2-day delivery, I frequently get stuff on Sunday. However, I believe it is usually the post office that delivers it, not UPS. They have this agreement whereby the shipment starts with UPS and they just drop it all off at the local PO for final delivery. Not everything, just sometimes.

My friend works for the SB county fire department. She gets paid 1,500 a day while she is onsite for a fire like this. She's not even a firefighter. Nice work if you can get it.

I do have a couple of comments regarding the submission process, but I hope they will be viewed as the constructive criticism they are intended to be...One reason why I only submitted one recipe is because I found the online form a bit primitive. It didn't have the same features we have come to enjoy in our AoS comments box. I have a fantastic recipe for Bailey's Irish Cream Cheesecake, but the submission box just didn't look like it could handle the directions for making it very well.
Also, I think it would be neat to include some pictures of our culinary creations next time, though I do realize this will significantly add to the cost of the final product. Maybe a select few pictures at the beginning of each chapter? Good cuisine is as much a feast for the eyes as for the belly!
Anyway, kudos to all of the Morons who contributed to this project (myself included), and an extra helping of hoboburgers and Valu-Rite to the Weasel, bluebell, and everyone else who put this amazing project together!

It really does have real honest-to-goodness recipes, but yeah, take a look. Starting on page 2 with the drink recipe submitted by our thread host, which he named after himself.
I would say at least 95% of everything is perfectly normal; the remaining 5% might have a little language (no f-bombs though), innuendo, or political incorrectness. PG-13 is what I'd call it, to be safe.

I have access to both a raclette machine and a fondue set, and have used both in the last year. The raclette machines with individual cheese trays are pricey, but fun. The key is finding the right cheese.
I posted this yesterday, but had the BEST ham this week at an early Christmas party. Recipe was to put the ham in a crock pot and cook it on low for 12 hours. That's it. Pulled apart tender and juicy just with a fork. Planning to make it for Christmas Eve dinner with sides, hopefully some of the sides ones provided by the Horde in the cookbook! Excited to try them.

BTW we get two deliveries from the post office per day on occasion, and this was happening even before Thanksgiving. I am buddies with my mailman, and he confirms they are doubling up because of peak volume. Plus they are delivering on Sundays. Here at least, USPS is really stepping up.
