Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"I am horrified to learn again just how invasive this witch hunt was into nearly every part of every major Wisconsin conservative’s life. Now it's confirmed that it reached my own, even so far as to collect private medical information included in my emails with my daughter … The thought of my government intentionally and illegally targeting me is sickening." WI State Senator, Leah Vukmir-Republican

Frightening.

Quote II

“I had a boyfriend many years ago, he was my first boyfriend who had his own house, and one day I went outside to see what he was doing, and he was hoisting an American flag up the flagpole in his front yard. And I instantly felt very weird. It didn’t make sense, but I felt … scared." Sarah Silverman

Quote III

“Why? Because there are things in this world that are more important than ourselves. Freedom. The Constitution of the United States. Our way of life. Mom, baseball, apple pie; these things and so many more that make us uniquely American. We belong to something greater than ourselves. As complex and diverse and discordant as it is, this thing, this idea called America, binds us together in citizenship and community and brotherhood.”Lt. Heather "Lucky" Penny.

Sarah Silverman, if you weren't such a despicable piece of shit, you might learn something from this woman.

Quote IV

“The appalling House vote for concealed carry reciprocity puts all New Yorkers at risk. This legislation would let individuals from out-of-state convicted of certain crimes carry hidden, loaded weapons in New York, in violation of New York’s much better, safer law. Only the NRA could propose something so ill-considered, dangerous and vile. New York passed the strongest gun safety measures in the country, and instead of joining the fight against senseless gun violence, Washington is trying to make New York and the rest of the nation less safe.”Governor Andrew M. Cuomo (D-NY)

What f*cking laws, Andy?

*****

Firearms manufacturers and the conundrum they face.

Gun store owners say they’re seeing a drop in sales as a result of bargain hunting and President Trump’s pro-Second Amendment support, Bloomberg reported.

The maker of Smith and Wesson — American Outdoor Brands Corp. — said it has seen its annual profit drop by as much as 45 percent as gun purchasers look for better deals elsewhere. The report credits the president’s staunch pro-Second Amendment support giving gun owners security that their firearms will not be taken away or restricted as in past administrations.

Despite the mass shootings, which in the past have drawn gun owners to stores as they fear impending lawmaker restriction, gun store owners say they have not seen this so-called “fear-based” buying.

The ONT thinks that most Vets who use VA facilities would like to have prompt treatment and be shown respect. But, let's add quackery to the lousy service.

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has announced (VHA Directive 1137: VA Provision of Complementary & Integrative Health) that acupuncture, reiki, and reflexology, among other “complementary and integrative health [CIH] practices” will now be included in the standard veterans’ medical benefits package. [Translation: You, the taxpayer, will foot the bill.] The VHA found “adequate evidence exists to support the use” of some of these CIH practices, despite their own evidence review showing otherwise (“List I”. These must be offered at all VHA medical facilities, either on-site or by referral to community providers. Other CIH approaches (“List II” will be included in veterans’ medical benefits because they “are generally considered to be safe,” any pretense of efficacy having been totally abandoned; whether to offer them at any particular facility is optional.

I have heard that this time of year cookies and milk can be comforting as well. Fruit cake optional.

Gloria Steinem and others of her ilk assisted in releasing the proverbial genie from the bottle in the 1960s. The summer of love. Women's liberation. Yadda, yadda, yadda. By God we will tell you what Erotica is good and what is bad.

“It is a hub that, in this moment of consciousness that is engulfing this country now, we must realize is the source of the poison that is in our system,” Steinem said, the New York Daily News reported.

Steinem said that erotica is healthy but that mainstream porn was not healthy erotica, arguing that Pornhub normalizes the degradation of girls and women.

I suppose when you are old and want to remain relevant you'll do just about anything for attention.

It's really bizarre when you think about it. The Presidents who did the shittiest things to American citizens were Democrats. The political party of the people who did the shittiest things to American minorities were Democrats. The political party with the greatest affinity for fascism and communism is the Democrats. So why are they so scared of Republicans?

49 Regarding the VA quackery: none of those "disciplines" are science-based. But in many cases, all that a patient really needs is a sympathetic ear, and if a reiki practitioner provides that, and the patient feels better for it, is it wrong?

Might even be cheaper for the taxpayer, instead of endless "medical" intervention for what may be a non-medical problem.*

Read all the steps in the Chilton's manual before dismantling sexism and misogyny, make sure you have the right tools before you start, keep an empty egg carton or magnetic bins on your bench so you don't lose the parts you need when it's time to reassemble the sexism and misogyny. Stuff like that.

We went to the tree farm and walked for several hours in sub zero temps. Had to avoid hungry wolves and a rabid coyote that tried to pee on us.

Near freezing to death, my wife finally said, "I don't care if the next tree is decorated or not. Let's chop it down"

197 Gloria Steinem's cherry was popped by Paul Desmond, the guy who wrote "Take Five." Very cool guy in his way, from a very cool era, and he treated her well and turned her on to art, music and the great philosophical trends of their time, which was after all quite a while ago now. But it was an affair; he did not plan to make her into a Mrs. Desmond, and she DID NOT get over that. The rest of her mad career is easily attributable to that ONE thing.

If I ever meet her, and she's from about a mile away so dude, could happen, I intend to ask her, There's just one thing about your life I've always wanted to undertand, and I wonder if you'd...

199 31 Speaking of crazy ass feminists, this ten things to ask on a first date is making a splash on the web.

1. Do you believe that Black Lives Matter?
All lives matter, including unborn babies'

2. What are your thoughts on gender and sexual orientation?
People should be judged as individuals, not as members of a group.

3. How do you work to dismantle sexism and misogyny in your life?
I've not been a victim of sexism.

4. What are your thoughts on sex work?
There are better ways to earn a living than by f**king icky people for money.

5. Are you a supporter of the BDS movemen
What the hell is that?

6. What is your understanding of settler colonialism and indigenous rights?
World history consists of various ethnic groups migrating into areas of other ethnic groups, sometimes resulting in fighting. None of us are indigenous if you go back far enough.

7. Do you think capitalism is exploitative?
No more so than any other system, including communism.

8. Can any human be illegal?
I don't know, why don't you try moving to Mexico with no documentation?

9. Do you support Muslim Americans and non-Muslim people from Islamic countries?
They need to support themselves, I'm fed up with people coming here to go on welfare. As far as non-Muslims from Muslim countries, our churches are full of Christians and Catholics from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. I've known Catholics from all these countries.

10. Does your allyship include disabled folks?
What the hell is allyship? Another made up liberal issue? I spent 5 and a half years taking care of my Alzeimers father. That's what family does.

227 This isn't true, but it's the way the story used to be told. A "yard" was supposed to be the proper length of a longbow arrow, and the yard around a building was by extension the distance you could shoot an arrow from the doors and firing-slits. So "get out of my yard" is a lot more telling than "off my lawn." I don't know, maybe loses something in re-calculation, like the metric stuff.

Anyway, "cloth-yard shaft" means 3 feet, and a cloth-yard is just what it sounds like, a fabric thing. Also, a pound of feathers is heavier...

My response to people, who want to run Trump out of office, is, "Welp, then we get Pence." I used that on my liberal sister in law and she said, "But Pence is too conservative and overly religious." Exactly. The system works.

That's the problem with old people who have been married a long, long time. We don't need anything, and we are much more focused on getting rid of stuff, rather than collecting more of it. Then I was saved. I heard an ad on the radio for a local shooting range. Christmas is saved! I went to his favorite range and got him a nice gift card.(And, yes, I already ordered my cookbook. Can't wait. These kind of cookbooks are fabulous. Real food cooked by real people that don't require every bloody pot and pan you own or most of the fricking day to prepare.)

Sometimes it goes the other way. The Spooks learn some interesting astrophysical thing using their advanced secret shit, but can't tell anyone without letting the cat of the bag.

So, it was with the gamma ray bursts. They knew about those a while before it the astrophysical community learned of it. It some secret gamma ray detection satellites used for detecting nuclear detonations. To reveal they knew, would reveal they had gamma ray detection equipment of a certain sophistication.

Once it became know, they shared their own data, somehow.

343 The Seattle Seahawks-Jacksonville jaguars game turned ugly late after a scuffle on field and near-scuffle between a player and fans.

As Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles took a knee to run out the clock in the final seconds, two Seahawks defenders hit him late, starting a fracas on the field.

Seahawks defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson was ejected for fighting, and as he made his way into the tunnel, turned back to argue with nearby fans in the stands. As the two parties exchanged words, someone appeared to throw an object on Jefferson, setting Jefferson off. Jefferson tried climbing into the stands to fight the fan, but was stopped by security before the situation escalated.

In the 7 years I worked there I saw many patients get dramatic relief from back pain. I occasionally go for upper back pain that results from standing and working (like cooking, chopping, stirring, etc) using counters that are too low for my height.

Back In Black was issued in 1980; per wiki

In the U.S.A., eight-track cartridges were phased out of retail stores by late 1982.

I recorded a shit-ton of 8 tracks in the 70s, but by 1977 I had switched to cassette recordings. Still, I didn't dump the 8-tracks until the 80s.

371 Speaking of crazy ass feminists, this ten things to ask on a first date is making a splash on the web.

1. Do you believe that Black Lives Matter?
All humans have an inalienable right to life. But if you attack someone in a way that justifies lethal force, your life is forfeit, sucka.

2. What are your thoughts on gender and sexual orientation?
Gender: XX female, X*Y male. Orientation: non-hetero usually caused by sexual abuse or other forms of abuse in childhood.

3. How do you work to dismantle sexism and misogyny in your life?
If you mean "how do I work with activists for this cause", I don't. If you're asking if I battle it within myself, I don't. I don't see the need in either case. To assume there is one is like asking "Have you stopped beating your wife?"

4. What are your thoughts on sex work?
Adults should be free to do that if they wish. Of course they should be protected against violence, coercion, etc. When it comes to sex trafficking, I'm with Liam Neeson.

5. Are you a supporter of the BDS movement?
I'm in favor of the freedom to boycott whatever entities do evil. I practice that myself. I'm not convinced Israel is doing anything evil. I'd much rather our government would sanction the PA instead of sending them aid.

6. What is your understanding of settler colonialism and indigenous rights?
It makes me sick to think of how the indigenous inhabitants of Constantinople, Egypt and Israel had their rights infringed by Muslim colonizers. I think colonialist efforts by the West have been a huge blunder, mainly because the left uses it as an emotional bludgeon to convince it to commit suicide.

7. Do you think capitalism is exploitative?
It can be exploitive. The important point is that it is not coercive. It would be stupid to trade for a system that is *both* exploitive and coercive

8. Can any human be illegal?
This is a semantic game. If an activity is criminal, it is by definition illegal. If a human can be labelled a criminal, a human can also be labelled an illegal. It's apparent to everyone what that means without forcing people to say "a person who committed a crime" or "a person here illegally", in place of calling them a criminal or an illegal.

9. Do you support Muslim Americans and non-Muslim people from Islamic countries?
This is like asking if I support red headed people. I would have to look into the individual case. You cannot generalize the problem beyond that. If you think so, show your work.

10. Does your allyship include disabled folks?
Yes, except for mentally disabled folks in Chicago. I like to torture them wit my homies and post the videos on facebook, as if you cared about that. But seriously, what does "allyship" cash out to? We have automatic doors, parking spaces, seeing eye dogs, all of these services. What are you trying to guilt me into doing that hasn't already been done?

Yeah ... that's pretty much what I thought. For me, 8-tracks were really a feature of elementary school (the 70s). By the time I was in high school no one (around me) had 8 tracks. There were already jokes about people with 8 tracks, still, at that point - at least in my neck of the woods.

I'm not saying I doubt the pic - I don't - just that when I think of 8-tracks I think of much older albums than that.

Overladen trucks tumping over is always amusing.

I was most impressed by the number of motorcyclists and bicyclers who actually stood up and walked away. One advantage of plastic over metal front-ends.

I was thinking, what if there had been so many dashcams around in the 1950 and '60s. We wouldn't have seen quite so many disintegrating toy vehicles.

437 If the VA wanted to do something useful for vets with difficult to control high blood pressure they would offer massage, and for diabetics, pedicures. Seems expensive, but those work better than medines that cost mulriples more which they try to push in levels I couldn't tolerate. Losarten only lowers bp a few points, now that I have gone to self pay, even to meds as my doctor isn't on their list, I had to dump Losarten. Just that savings will be going to message and foot help, which will take bp down 46 to 60 points or more... or has, for me.

I just need ssa to deal with the paperwork I keep sending them and they keep losing. Been on ss for thirty years, they up and decided I shouldn't be. Too many illegals, no longer time for 100% disabled vets.

As is they only push what is least effective, most harmful, and most intrusive. If they want more documentation (experimentation), want practice for interns, or it's patented by friends? Cool. If it is relatively cheap but effective, or cuts out doctors, then nubs.

But 2017 already has broken the post-Sandy Hook panic buying in late 2012 though 2013.
