I read Derek Hunter's column on his mother from the sidebar. Very touching. Perhaps most of us love our mothers to the same degree as he did. I lost my mom a little over a year ago. She was everything a mom should be and more. As the oldest, I always felt I was her favorite but honestly, upon reflection, with seven other sibs and her working full time, I'm not sure she had enough time to have a favorite.
I do know she always could read my mind, especially as an adult. She was the first one I called when both my wife and my son passed. Each time, all I had to say to her was "Mom. . . .". She said the same thing both times - "Which one?" with all the tenderness a human could muster.
She talked me off the ledge when I needed it, gave me hell when I needed it, and said nothing when I needed that too.
Mom worked midnights as a labor and delivery nurse for 40 years. She imparted her wisdom to her children sitting at the breakfast table in her slip, half-asleep with a cold cup of coffee and a 2 inch ash on the tip of her cigarette.
How she could keep that ash from falling always amazed me. Still does.

That's a paper on making a relatively cheap watt balance. Out of Lego parts.
It's accuracy will not be that of the NIST's latest watt balance (which will be used to define the standard kilogram for us in the US) by a long shot, but it's something cool you build for less than a $1K.
The paper will go through the theory, which is very interesting. It's two quantum effects that allow electrical power to be expressed entirely in terms of Planck's constant and some frequency measurements, plus some others. No other standard is needed.
This allows mass to be measured, once Planck's constant is known.

That's basically it. You get a coil of wire and pass a ginormous current through it. I mean something ridiculous that requires those high current capacitors that can support some YUGE discharge current (briefly).
Now, that makes a magnetic field. You then explosively compress that current loop and magnetic field. For the short term, you can think conservation of Magnetic flux (this hold on the short time scales).
Now, this makes a YUGE time varying magnetic dipole, which is what you want to make a YUGE EMP.

Inflation is caused by too much money chasing too few goods. It doesn't matter what the money is, SPAIN had inflation problems in the 16th and 17th centuries from the gold and silver coming from the Indies.
It is just that when you have a fiat currency it is incredibly easy to increase the money supply. Digital is even easier.
At least gold gives some sort of control

Copper wire wrapped steel tube, with about a 2 in., smoothly machined inside diameter.
A rare-earth cylindrical magnet, machined about .01 smaller diameter than the tube's bore. Said magnet to be sleeved with a tightly fitted nylon tube with a .005 thickness.
The nylon-sleeved magnet is inserted into one (outside threaded) end of the wire wrapped tube, and the (inside threaded) firing chamber containing 1 oz. of C-4 is secured thereon. The C-4 to be initiated by a standard blasting cap, with wires led through a small hole at the rear of the chamber.
When fired, the rare-earth-magnet accelerates to a significant percentage of the C-4's +/- 24,000 ft. per second blast-wave front.
As it passes down the tube, an enormous EMP is generated in a wave along the longitudinal axis of the tube. Although the device is self-destroyed upon use, the pulse exists in the microsecond as the magnet flies down the bore, and before the tube explodes behind it's travel.
Popular Science featured this about 20 years ago, speculating that an enemy could scale one up to about an 8 in. bore and 30 ft. "barrel" length, and take out a major city's grid with one shot.
I'd think this 2" version would neatly take out an unfriendly road convoy, comms center or UAV control Conex.
Problem is, experimenting with one, even ONE test shot, would trip every dot-gov alphabet out there, and HELL would rain down on the home brewed mad scientist.

Boy, I had no idea this was going on. Since the mid '90s, the electrical industry has been defining electrical units differently, based on defining Planck's constant (and the electronic charge), and has been using this ever since, not true SI units.
That it, with a properly calibrated digital MM, you are measuring "conventional volts, amps, ohms, etc).
These differ from the SI equivalents by about 1 part in a billion or so. No practical different of any import save for the most sensitive measurements.
But that is something I did not know. By the upcoming 2018 rejiggering of SI units, SI will be brought into agreement with these.
This is something I didn't have a clue had happened. They didn't ask me.
But I had no idea.

As a 12 year old, I made an electric arc furnace, poking holes in opposite sides of a ceramic flower pot, taking the carbon rods out of two D cell "batteries," sharpening them in a pencil sharpener, wiring them up, connecting them to the mains, touching them to each other, and then carefully withdrawing them slightly to strike the carbon arc.
Surprisingly, I didn't electrocute myself, but if I did it today, I wonder if the broad band white noise from that arc would take our every WiFi for a considerable distance.

Welding arcs would wreak havoc with the local AM radio stuff around here. I've got an inverter based ESAB MIG unit, a big one, and that thing's switching frequency will really play hell with any radio plugged into the local service.
Some of it is radiated, but a lot gets on the local wiring. I have no idea what it would do to WIFI nearby.

As a 12 year old, I made an electric arc furnace, poking holes in opposite sides of a ceramic flower pot, taking the carbon rods out of two D cell "batteries," sharpening them in a pencil sharpener, wiring them up, connecting them to the mains, touching them to each other, and then carefully withdrawing them slightly to strike the carbon arc.
Surprisingly, I didn't electrocute myself, but if I did it today, I wonder if the broad band white noise from that arc would take our every WiFi for a considerable distance.

I live in the great northern forest where the wilderness grows wild with every tree disease known to foresters. Absolutely no management of the forest is done. When enough trees survive to reach marketable size, the woodsmen come in and harvest the marketable timber and leave the slash pile where it falls.
This is called 'slash and burn' without the burn.
My hovel had trees growing right up to the building. I had the big ones pulled down before they fell on the structure, and cleared out much of the rest by hand.
Every time the winds blow, the power goes out because the power company doesn't keep the right of way clear.
My worst fear is a wild fire.

Lots of chi-chi liberals here have bought houses that back onto canyons that are overgrown with mesquite etc. and that run E-W.
I guess they don't have canyons in the Northeast, because when I look at those houses, I picture a Santa Ana roaring up that canyon toward the ocean, bringing 100 degree temps, 10% humidity, and a kick ass brush fire with it.
A friend of mine originally from the Northeast had to evacuate, and came within a block of having his house burnt to the ground a couple years ago.

And a 200 watt Linear Amp behind a CB radio will blank the ever
lovin' hell out of a Wi-Fi network or device, too. For a radius of some
hundreds of feet.
Makes a decent jammer to many common comms frequencies, period.
Components are cheap enough to be essentially disposable, and left
behind with a stout rubber band holding down the "transmit" button.

that was before the Trump campaign, back when I still liked all of them. They were all amusing, but Tucker absolutely stole the show at the end. that surprised me, because at the time, I knew him mainly as the preppy guy who used to wear bow ties. Other surprising things about Tucker: he's from California (I was somehow sure he was an East Coast WASP), he got married young, has 4 kids, used to chew tobacco, and loves to hunt. never would have guessed it.
But they were all pretty chummy and seemed to be personal friends. Now, Tucker is riding high and the others (well, I don't know about Rob Long) are stuck in NeverTrump irrelevancy. Carlson criticized Bill Kristol's stupid Trump hatred on the air. I wonder if he's still buddies with the others.

Well, anyway. Friend narrowly escaped the fire's path last night, and with winds mostly N/NW, he should be OK (plus the huge scorched area just north of him acting as a firebreak). He said the "air quality" was so bad he's not going outside.
Controlled burns. My favorite, all-time, was back in the 90s. The "controlled" burn near Los Alamos (the famous one, not the other one, near CaliGirl, that I love) got, well, out of control. Ended up burning down the town - the lab was OK. As I recall, a new Forest Service manager, from out of the area, wrong time of year, etc etc. Pretty amazing.

Those houses are beautiful, nice views but I would never live in a canyon like that. Especially in LA with small winding roads. Tough to fight fires or evacuate in those conditions.

That reminds me. I want a plasma cutter. Those things will cut anything (metal) with the finest thin kerf. It's amazing, you just use compressed air and some fancy electronic driver to create a very high temp arc, 7000F. It's N2 in the air IIRC that can make a very hot arc.
It's very tiny, and just goes along and vaporizes a tiny little kerf, but with very little overall heat input to the rest of the metal.

Supercharge your arclight....take one wire from the wall socket to one of the carbons in the flower pot. Take the other wall socket wire to a pot of very salty water and then the wire to the other carbon rod. Plug in and use insulated tool to put carbons close and enjoy. Also about 12 y/o project.

Just visited my friend up there a few weeks ago, we went up/through Ojai for the first time (for me) in 30 years, over 150, the highway where crude oil seeps out along the side of the road. Ventura's a nice small city, downtown/main street's come back, of course the setting and climate are fantastic, and the growth hasn't yet changed the place that much once you get off the 101.
Sounds like Carpinteria, Camarillo, and the coastal area up towards SB - but not quite to it, hopefully - will burn tonight if they get the winds forecasted.

I have engineered, in my mind, a gasoline powered water pump using a large in-ground swimming pool as a reservoir that will put a water fog over my entire two acre lot.
For extra credit, I would include a water canon that would shoot a stream of water several hundred feet down into the canyon where the wildfire approaches.
Fire can't burn through a water fog, for as long as the swimming pool has water in it.
If I had the money. Which I don't.

I suppose there are examples up in the burn areas, but I know in other parts of SoCal, people who choose to build in remote, very fire-vulnerable locations can and do use all the tricks in the book of modern fire-resistant construction, and have survived some blazes.
I'm actually puzzled as to how many of the structures in Ventura, or earlier in Santa Rosa, caught fire. Built-up areas, apparently modern construction. Just can't figure how a house catches fire in that situation, absent abundant fuel (vegetation) right next to it.

Thanks. We have already been to the vet. She has pneumonia. We have her on the usual meds. She has been drinking lots of water but not eating. We hit upon baby food this evening and that is going well so far. Looking for alternatives in the event she gets tired of baby food. We are probably going back to the vet tomorrow for appetite stimulants.

Was that because Canadian smokes were stronger than American ones? I've never smoked but I seem to recall a smoker (I can't recall whether American or Canadian) saying the Canadian ones -- Export 'A' or Player's -- were stronger.
I've read in reference to WW1 and 2 Germans that they preferred Turkish tobacco cigarettes to Virginian ones although I don't know if that's based solely on 'taste' or on nicotine fixes.

But there was that one time when they served their intended purpose. The sentries at the post heading into South Ossetia, from Stalin's hometown, were friendly enough. But I was able to give them each a carton. They knew, coming from an American, they were the real thing. They were ecstatic.
Wonder if such things still carry much weight now? Early on, such luxuries were not common, but now I'd think things have changed.

highly unlikely, given the distance. much more likely: arson, vagrant/illegal alien encampment, cigarette butt from a passing car, really hot fragment from a catalytic converter (started a major fire a few years back off the 91 in the canyon into OC) etc.
the other Valley fires were well over 10 miles away. hell, i live between the two, and all we've gotten is micro ash, not even flakes.

You could do it on the cheap, just enough to protect your house and immediate grounds.
You know those cheap, inflatable rim, INTEX brand swimming pools they sell at WalMart? 'Bout $200 when on sale.
Start buying them, as you're able, till you have four to six of 'em in your storage.
Buy that Honda engine powered water pump.
Meetup with a contractor in the Commercial Fire Suppression business. Sprinkler rigs, like you see in the ceilings of businesses.
What you'd want to do, is build a pipe frame skeleton to sit over the outline of your house.
Probably between fifty and a hundred sprinkler heads.
You can build it, then unbolt it down in to quick-to-re-assemble sub assemblies. Those systems are made with metal collars with internal rubber seals, which simply bolt (tightly) onto the pipe sections. Easy peasy.
When fires threaten, erect the skeleton, break out and fill the pools, in a circle around your Honda powered pump.
Drain the pools sequentially, as needed.
You might lose the vegetation on your acreage. But you'd likely save the house and contents.
At least, I'd like to think so.
Having lived a good chunk of my life out there, I've seen what creosote bush and chaparral do when they burn and rampage.

I was in Belarus right after the USSR breakup. All the new countries had their own cute currencies because we're grownup countries now, Dad! Belarus' had bunny rabbits on it.
Of course, nobody outside accepted any of the currencies, so that whole part of the world ran on barter.
I was visiting the state monopoly cigarette manufacturer in Grodno. Their deal was roll tobacco into cigarettes. Tobacco doesn't grow in Belarus, so they had to barter with Moldova where tobacco grows.
Now, you can sort of see that working unless you're a communist. The cigarette company was under the agriculture ministry, Minzelhozprod, because tobacco is a thing that grows. Minzelhozprod decreed that agricultural companies could barter no more than 10% of their output.
That sort of makes sense in the "we need to keep food here" sense, but we're talking about cigarettes.
So the company would make cigarettes and barter 10% of them for raw tobacco. Rolling tobacco in paper is not a high value added proposition, so they'd only get so much. Then they'd make that many cigarettes and barter 10% of those for tobacco.
It took only a few iterations of that game to have a factory with 2,000 employees to be working at 2% capacity.
Cigarettes are the world's best product: addictive, subject to brand loyalty, and cheap to produce. The commies managed to fuck that up.

Levis in the USSR. Late 70s, I got over $200 (in rubles, at official rates) for one pair. Not even brand new. They knew what they were about. They immediately checked the bottom hem of each pant leg - that area shows the wear first/best.
One guy in the program brought almost nothing but new Levis, Marlboros, lady's hose, and Beatles records. He scored a few thousand rubles, and would usually eat at the tourist hotels instead of the cafeteria. He probably didn't speak 500 words of Russian, but he had a good time.

Do a Web search, and see if the same generic or equivalent can be found in a Mexican pharmacy, for cheap dollars. Some of those drugs are sold OTC in mexico.

At least around here, most vets sell Hills Prescription Diet in several different formulas, a couple of which are good at enticing dogs to eat without the extras (like onion extract) that a lot of baby foods contain. Urgent Care and AD come immediately to mind. They are also available online, and I don't think you really need a prescription to buy them.
Cheap sliced turkey (not the expensive stuff from the deli counter, the stuff you buy in the packaged luncheon meat section) has also worked for me (as a pill delivery system) in the past. This stuff has a little too much salt, but it isn't too fatty and usually my dogs will eat it even when their appetite is not 100%.
If you want to make the food yourself, skinless boneless poached/braised chicken (I generally use the thighs) chopped up and mixed with white rice can entice some dogs to eat. Maybe worth a try.
Pneumonia is usually treated with a course of antibiotics, and these can affect the digestive system to the point where the dog isn't that interested in eating. Probiotics and even plain yogurt can help counteract this, although the antibiotics will keep fighting the positive effects. See what your vet says about this. Cerenia is a specific treatment for nausea (kind of expensive), and metoclopramide (cheaper) helps the digestive system move things along which can help with appetite as well.
Also, if you have trouble getting your dog to take the pills, a lot of the antibiotics can be administered SubQ, which is definitely preferable to them missing a dose.
Hope your dog feels better soon.

For a small fee, the grumpy babushka with the keys to the museum opened up for us (group of 3 foreigners).
Anyway, the rail car was cool. You Know Who's seat was at the head of a conference table. Can't recall if the others were labeled - but it would have been Zhukov, Voroshilov, Molotov, others. And of course we sat in their seats.

Thanks. We have her on an antibiotic Clavimos (sp?). Your suggestions on anti-nausea meds is much appreciated. We have always tricked our dogs into taking their meds with food but that is not working here so I have resorted to the pry the mouth open, drop the pill in, hold it closed until the swallow happens. Kind of like a low rent lion tamer.

My dog who had cancer - we had to get him to eat a lot more than usual to keep him from losing weight. We got a prednisone prescription. It's cheap and he ate like a champ while on it. Kept his weight up right until the end.
On the food front, in addition to his usual food, we gave him spam and mac and cheese, which he found irresistible.

it's a common problem: Mom and Dad go see this doc here, and get an Rx filled... then they go see that doc, and get one filled, etc...
they don't remember what is what, and who can blame them? i'm the biz, only take a few meds and I don't remember the exact names, albeit i know why i'm taking them, the dose, etc.
also check the med cabinet, or where ever they keep them all, take *everything* in for the review. chances are that they have outdated, superseded, or duplicate meds that they still have and might even be taking, either through confusion or "waste not, want not" mentality of "i paid for this shit, i ain't throwing it away"

At a Hungarian shoe factory in 1984, the director told a funny story about a shipment of shoes he had sent to Kiev.

Clavamox is an amoxicillin-based antibiotic (they mix it with an additional ingredient which is supposed to make it more effective than just amoxicillin). I've used it before. Since you have already started with that antibiotic, I am pretty sure you have to finish the course (otherwise you risk the development of a resistant strain of bacteria). Yogurt should help with the digestive issues, though. If this should happen again, or if they feel they need to treat with a broader spectrum antibiotics, you might ask about adding Convenia, which is an injectable antibiotic that lasts 10-14 days and does not have the same effects on the digestion.
The Hill's Diet foods are the consistency of pate and you can take a little blob and toss it down their throat (even with a pill inside), which is handy.
Finally, I probably don't need to say it, but the most important thing is not food, but rather water/hydration. I once had a dog eat almost nothing for almost two weeks, but because she got enough fluids she pulled through. Sometimes if a dog is drinking but not drinking quite enough (due to feeling ill) they can get dehydrated and make themselve feel even worse (actually my wife did this to herself once as well, but that's another story), but can be perked up quite quickly with SubQ fluids. I am sure your vet will check for this, although it couldn't hurt to ask as well.

Story from the cold war.
Location: Russian-Norwegian border, close to the arctic circle. Ca. winter 1972. Conditions cold to witches' tits cold.
A colleague of mine, Robert, was then a non-com stationed there with the Russian border forces. The border was watched and mined. The garrison was a cross section of the Russian population, including Finns, Kazachs, heritage Germans, Mongols, etc.
In the middle of winter an alarm went off because a tracked vehicle hadn't come to replace the watch. In the meter deep snow were tank tracks leading through the minefield directly to the Norwegian border.
Apparently, as impossible as it is to believe, the entire watch along with their replacements had disappeared together with their vehicle in the direction of the class enemy. This group, btw, consisted of Finns, Germans, Kazachs, and Russians. Seven men in total.

i'd want to see staffing levels, an org chart, and other details, because there's lots more bottom people than top, in most hospitals, among other things.
i doubt a community hospital in a town that size has a huge number of ICU beds, or specialized ones, or the whiz bang surgeries that require top gun crews (docs usually aren't on hosp payroll) so, unless they have way too many admin pukes, i'm confused.

Well you are partly right. No union here. No SEIU, which is a big hospital employees union in Cali and other states. But this particular hospital is admin top-heavy. Their administrative costs are around 28% of total hospital revenue, compared to most of the other hospitals in the state in the range of 15-22%.
Except for the psychiatric hospital which run about 35% admin costs.
There are a bunch of these inpatient psychiatric-only facilities cropping up. They do some scary stuff.

Oddly enough, this hospital, being somewhat geographically isolated by the Rocky Mountains, does have a disproportionately high number of ICU beds, but also has a disproportionately high number of Family Medicine physicians on the medical staff (many of the ICU beds are on the Family Medicine service). And the hospital does employ a substantial number of the doctors, which is what I suspect is dragging the average salary up.

Nowadays, you pay extra for a nice oaken toilet seat. Most of them are plastic, or mdf board coated with melamine. Actually, one of the finest toilet seats I ever came to appreciate was one in the outhouse at a fishing camp in Ontario where I spent several winter months, and it was -40 nearly every day. They had placed an inch-thick layer of that soft, pebbly sort of styrofoam on the seat, and as soon as one's bare ass touched it, it reflected the warmth right back, and was toasty warm.

Speaking of infections, my father nearly lost his hand one time back in the late '80s. He was working on something, replacing a bearing in a grain dryer, that had a lot of nasty crud on it. Rotten grain residue.
He got a little puncture wound in the heel of his hand. Nothing, he thought, happens all the time. Well, that sucker got infected. He did it on a Friday, and by Sunday, that sucker was hurting like hell.
He waited to go to the doctor until Monday morning. When he got to the office, his doc looked it at, called the hospital and told them to prepare for emergency surgery.
My father said what the hell, and the doc told him you're about to lose your hand, and I'm taking you to the hospital right now. No, no time to go home and do anything, we've got to go right now.
He was within hours of losing that hand. They had to go in there and clean out the infection.

My Mom told me a story from before I was born that she once kept a sick puppy alive with scrambled raw egg and milk.
The dog I had as a pal when I was a kid got a regular after Church Sunday treat, while we were eating breakfast, of scrambled raw egg and milk, with a touch of vanilla. She'd lap that up, always finishing with a look that said, 'Is that all there is? More, please.' Well, except for the 'please' part.
You might try soft scrambled eggs, too. Maybe with some chopped up cooked beef or something.
