They were dispatched prior to the start of the war to serve as a deterrent - the same reason the US fleet was earlier concentrated at Pearl Harbor. Additionally, when entering action there were air units assigned to provide air cover for the ships which was available (as limited as it was) to cover the vessels during their withdrawal. Force Z did not request air cover at the appropriate time.

I figure that his biggest blunder is his long-standing obsession with the Mediterranean and the "soft white underbelly" of southern Europe. A lot of British Commonwealth combat power in WWII was wasted on trying to control the Med. Not to mention the various actions in Africa and Italy.
Other than keeping control of the Suez Canal, I don't see how it was worth the effort.
He made the same mistake in World War I with the Gallipoli Campaign. So it was a deeply held obsession, and a distraction to his main mission in both wars of defeating Germany.

The Japanese dispatched a considerable fleet to reinforce and expand their Aleutian invasion. In the longest naval engagement ever, a limited US fleet delayed them enough to render the decision moot.
I met an old guy who was there, as a gunner. Don't know if related, but he was the damnedest shotgunner I ever saw. Sawed off handle, taped, and shot doubles from the hip, by feel. Did not miss much. Said it was just like hitting a ball with a bat.

right. Here is where I think we differ - I look at FDR's (and the other two's) tenure segmentally - before WWII, during WWII and after WWII. You look at it linearly. During WWII Stalin and USA's interests converged, GB was a bit on the outside, "The Empire" and her interests above all. After WWII , USA's and GB interests converges and USSR's diverged.

I made this point a few days ago to someone: If Trump is a smart person (and the person I was talking to conceded that he was) and if he's been thinking of running for President for a while (we have statements from what, the 80's?) wouldn't it be logical to assume that Trump knew they would go over his life with a microscope? Donald Trump also strikes me as a careful person who tries to do things correctly the first time. Despite all the calls by partisans for him to fire this person or go all executive order like Obama, Trump doesn't do that. He follows procedures correctly, as they are set down. None of his foes have yet, to my recollection, caught him in some procedural error. I think that must be frustrating the investigators, that for all of the blustering and tweeting, he really isn't doing anything illegal. And obstruction of justice for firing Comey? Well Trump did fire Flynn for lying to him and the vice-president, why wouldn't he fire Comey also for lying to him and Congress?

Granted. But colonial interests were peripheral to the survival of Great Britain. In WWII, Britain was under DIRECT threat from Germany. In that situation, diverting a large portion of your professional soldiers and equipment to fight over the colonies while the home country is being plastered by the Luftwaffe and the Nazis are trying to put together Operation Sea Lion seems to be an unnecessary risk.

However, when I drove the car up the ramp in the employee parking structure, it shut down on me when I tried making a turn. The wheel locked and nothing happened when I tried shifting gears. I had to restart the car and then it happened again as I was parking it. The battery light went out - but I just got the damn battery replaced in July and when I got my oil changed in September, they checked the battery and said it was OK.
I'm really pissed off - I've got this stupid crown to (partially) pay for and now the car and of course it's a crappy month to incur extra expenses. But winter is a crappy time to have your car break down in Wisconsin.

Well, the NYT, and locally, WXYZ and WDIV both seem to be saying that he's not going to run for re-election, he will finish out his term and that he endorses his relative for the job.
Retiring in "2019."
However, there is a Des Moines Register story saying he's resigning today.

structure, it shut down on me when I tried making a turn. The wheel
locked and nothing happened when I tried shifting gears. I had to
restart the car and then it happened again as I was parking it. The
battery light went out - but I just got the damn battery replaced in
July and when I got my oil changed in September, they checked the
battery and said it was OK.

Another thought. The search for bank records is sounding to me like Mueller is starting to scramble to find something, anything to charge.
(1) With Flynn pleading to lying to the FBI and not any underlying crime that says that one is a dry well.
(2) Obstruction of justice for firing someone when the investigation continued anyway sure looks like nothing was obstructed.
(3) Something financial because there has to be something there - well, I don't know. If there were any irregularities those would have (in my opinion) been leaked over the past two years.
(4) Showing disobedience to Hawaiian judges by appealing their orders and Misogyny in the First Degree by denying Hillary her Crown.
Oh, and Trump has plenty of money and lawyers of his own and can wage a legal war of attrition, which must be frustrating as all get-out.

No, most of it was under control of the Austrian or Ottoman empires up until WWI. Poland was constantly in flux between self rule and being partitioned between the great powers. After WWI, those areas got their independence and proceeded to fight territorial disputes among themselves that left them vulnerable when Hitler rolled around. The Poles actually beat back the Russians in one little war. Russia has always wanted to create a pan-slavic empire but it's never quite worked out for them.

The US army was being shipped to the Pacific or being demobilized. One concern the Army had about invading Japan was that they were going to invade with a lot of raw recruits since a good chunk of troops from Europe had the points to exit the service.

The Russians were actually running out of men by the end of the war. Divisional strengths were way down.
I've gamed it out, and the Allies would prevail. A lot of dead ground troops on the US side, and a lot of dead troops, airman, civilians, dog, cats, & chickens on the Soviet side.
However, the level of war weariness was such that there was no will to fight a new war on any side. Governments would have fallen, and in some cases, they did.

The Russians were actually running out of men by the end of the war. Divisional strengths were way down.
I've gamed it out, and the Allies would prevail. A lot of dead ground troops on the US side, and a lot of dead troops, airman, civilians, dog, cats, & chickens on the Soviet side.
However, the level of war weariness was such that there was no will to fight a new war on any side. Governments would have fallen, and in some cases, they did.

Max Hasting's book "Churchill's War" covers the UK's Med strategy and failures in depth. To the Navy's credit, whatever the debacles in the Levant, Malta held and the supply lines to Egypt were secure.

We've now been at War for 16 years... but only because while we have troops in combat worldwide, the Civilians here don't really feel it.

This whole charade was cooked up by the failed Hillary campaign out of nothing to delegitimize Trump's victory.
The FAKENEWS media flogged it like a rented mule. Now that it has been set in motion, corrupt Mueller and his crew of partisan hacks are not going to stop until they find something, ANYTHING, to hang on Trump. To spend millions to come up with a silly conviction of Flynn for lying to the FBI would be a humiliation.
The whole thing is nothing but an attempted slow-motion coup. That it even got this far is appalling. That Sessions recused himself is inexplicable. Trump should take his case to the public and then fire the whole lot of them.

The logistic lines to the strategic bomber groups and wings was still to England. That would have remained. However, the highly polished Tac Air Forces based in Germany would have won decisive air supremacy.
Later, you could have moved the strategic bombers to new bases. Most runways in Germany were not set up for B-17s, B-24s, B-29s or B-32s.

Some of that might, could have happened, but there wasn't enough financial or human capital left among Imperial adherents to do all that. And that was Churchill's portfolio.
England was essentially a socialist country and a Soviet ally from the 1920's on. It's one of history's little mistakes that Churchill even came to power.

John Conyers doesn't know where he is most of the time. His handlers wouldn't allow the Detroit press to ask him questions during the last election.
He was run as a front for others in Detroit to make sure the graft pipleline continued and the relatives and friends all continued to have jobs. Conyers lawyer the other day during a Detroit press conference was trying to shame all the staffers who have come forward as being ungrateful for the fact that John has given them, their daughter and their friends jobs.
I'm not kidding, I couldn't believe he said that.
There was a rally Sunday for him at some black church in Detroit. The usual suspects were denouncing Nancy Pelosi , saying she didn't get to decide when Conyers would leave Congress that was up to him.
Me thinks they all protest too much.

And the idea that it had become a "socialist" country and a Soviet ally from "the 1920's on" is ... ludicrous. Churchill was a pariah not because the UK was "socialist" but because because he opposed the Government of India Act (1935), supported Edward VIII, and the Conservatives held absolute power in Parliament with Prime Ministers Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain holding the reins.
A Soviet ally? Hell, Chamberlain sold out the Czechs because the alternative would be a Soviet alliance. There were serious discussions in 1939 between France and the UK over whether the Allies should provide military and naval support for the Finns during the Soviet invasion of Finland.
As for Gallipoli, the dithering of the RN and the RA gave the Germans and Turks time to build up their defenses. Yeah, the Brits lost a lot of battleships, but if they should have gone all in. Easy to say now.
