6 Casabianca
The boy stood on the burning deck
Whence all but he had fled;
The flame that lit the battle's wreck
Shone round him o'er the dead.
Yet beautiful and bright he stood,
As born to rule the storm;
A creature of heroic blood,
A proud, though childlike form.
The flames roll'd on...he would not go
Without his father's word;
That father, faint in death below,
His voice no longer heard.
He call'd aloud..."Say, father, say
If yet my task is done!"
He knew not that the chieftain lay
Unconscious of his son.
"Speak, father!" once again he cried
"If I may yet be gone!"
And but the booming shots replied,
And fast the flames roll'd on.
Upon his brow he felt their breath,
And in his waving hair,
And looked from that lone post of death,
In still yet brave despair;
And shouted but one more aloud,
"My father, must I stay?"
While o'er him fast, through sail and shroud
The wreathing fires made way,
They wrapt the ship in splendour wild,
They caught the flag on high,
And stream'd above the gallant child,
Like banners in the sky.
There came a burst of thunder sound...
The boy-oh! where was he?
Ask of the winds that far around
With fragments strewed the sea.
With mast, and helm, and pennon fair,
That well had borne their part;
But the noblest thing which perished there
Was that young faithful heart.

23 A dangerous adventure began on the 19 May 1798 when Napoleon sailed from Toulon to Egypt, capturing Malta on the way. On 1 August, Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson sighted French flags in the Alexandrian harbour which was full of shipping. These flags did not belong to any ships of the line, but the French battle fleet was subsequently sighted anchored in Aboukir Bay, 15 miles east of Alexandria, by the Banard built British ship 'Zealous', 74 guns. Nelson, in his flagship 'Vanguard', 74 guns, immediately headed there and launched and immediate, late-afternoon attack on the anchored enemy in what subsequently became a devastating night action.

34 The explosion of L'Orient was one of those rare events that truly did decide a battle, which in turn decided the fate of Egypt at the time. It was the flagship of the French fleet; when it's magazine detonated, it was reported that people in Alexandria, 50 miles away, heard the explosion. It was such an awe-inspiring explosion that the entire battle came to a dead stop for a few minutes.

As a result of this victory by Nelson, Napoleon lost any hope of sea borne contact with France, and he eventually abandoned the army he had taken to Egypt and was forced to sneak back to France by himself.

Napoleon's abandonment of his army in the Middle East later became ammo for his enemies. He had the following painting made to counter those charges. In it he is depicted as almost god-like, walking among his plague-stricken soldiers, reaching out to touch their boils as if he had a healing touch. Look at how the other French officers recoil at the scene, but not the General. He cares, dammit!

No argument there and I didn't mean to imply otherwise. In fact Vic addressed that Winnie was a fucking goof regarding the need for D Day. However I think FDR squandered the need to unite against the Georgian cocksucker on the postwar settling of accounts.

I've got some other things to do (shockingly I have a real life) so I have to terminate this for now. I appreciate this discussion because you're carrying it on at a good level (i.e. not calling me an asshole over a subjective disagreement) and we can either carry it on thread hopping or maybe revisit it on the Sunday book thread where other people are familiar with Winick's book. No, he didn't. He was in two columns and went up against the Franco-Spanish line and broke it into three pieces. He did not want a controlled fleet action, he wanted a general melee where he was certain that his well-drilled crews would beat the stuffing out of the poorer trained French and Spanish.

The French moored their ships along the edge of the harbor, expecting that Nelson couldn't sail between their ships and land. They moved the guns from the land side of the ships to the port side, increasing their firepower.

But Nelson realized that there was room, and sailed between the French and the shore, and kicked the shit out of them.

Yeah...he was just better than anyone else.

83 This painting lacks the dynamic feel of newer maritime paintings like those used on the Patrick O'Brian covers. Of course, the scene is not on the high seas with wind driven waves and full sails. But I love the colors used in the water and the detail on the ships. The explosion of the powder on the destroyed ship really gives a feel for the violence of naval warfare as the debris gets lost in the roiling smoke rising above the shattered shell of the hull. This must be even more impressive in a large painting on display. The Wiki page has another of his maritime works in (I think) pen and ink which is excellent.

Thanks CBD. I always enjoy these 'age of sail' paintings.

His Lordship came to me on the poop, and after ordering certain signals to be made, about a quarter to noon, he said, 'Mr. Pasco, I wish to say to the fleet, ENGLAND CONFIDES THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY' and he added 'You must be quick, for I have one more to make which is for close action.' I replied, 'If your Lordship will permit me to substitute the confides for expects the signal will soon be completed, because the word expects is in the vocabulary, and confides must be spelt,' His Lordship replied, in haste, and with seeming satisfaction, 'That will do, Pasco, make it directly.'

110 FDR's best decision throughout WW2 was that he let George Marshall control overall strategy and didn't interfere with him, and he let Nimitz be in charge of the Pacific War and didn't interfere with him, either.

this greatly distinguishes him from military disasters like LBJ and Jimmy Carter, who felt compelled to interfere with every military decision that was made.

Churchill gets a lot of credit for being daring and for getting the big picture right sooner than anybody, but Churchill insisted on directing British military strategy, and he made some colossal blunders along the way.

For starters, ordering the Repulse and the Prince of Wales to Singapore with no air cover. Fine ships and crews lost to bad orders.

It's not so much the cake is gay. It's a case of trying to coerce people to cater or participate in a ceremony that they feel is immoral.

The French Fleet for the most part was anchored and tethered into a rough line along the mouth of the bay with only the seaward facing guns having crew assigned.

Donald Trump also strikes me as a careful person who tries to do things correctly the first time. Despite all the calls by partisans for him to fire this person or go all executive order like Obama, Trump doesn't do that. He follows procedures correctly, as they are set down. None of his foes have yet, to my recollection, caught him in some procedural error. I think that must be frustrating the investigators, that for all of the blustering and tweeting, he really isn't doing anything illegal. And obstruction of justice for firing Comey? Well Trump did fire Flynn for lying to him and the vice-president, why wouldn't he fire Comey also for lying to him and Congress?

Cuba and the Philippines might beg to differ.
You could argue that Cuba was a colony of the Confederacy. Before the Unpleasantness ever began, Southern interests were sure it should be ours.

Germany and the US got into the colony business late, and each in its own way tried to hurry things up. Although there was considerable debate in both countries, when Germany is in a hurry, asses get kicked.

Another thought. The search for bank records is sounding to me like Mueller is starting to scramble to find something, anything to charge.

(1) With Flynn pleading to lying to the FBI and not any underlying crime that says that one is a dry well.

(2) Obstruction of justice for firing someone when the investigation continued anyway sure looks like nothing was obstructed.

(3) Something financial because there has to be something there - well, I don't know. If there were any irregularities those would have (in my opinion) been leaked over the past two years.

(4) Showing disobedience to Hawaiian judges by appealing their orders and Misogyny in the First Degree by denying Hillary her Crown.

No, most of it was under control of the Austrian or Ottoman empires up until WWI. Poland was constantly in flux between self rule and being partitioned between the great powers. After WWI, those areas got their independence and proceeded to fight territorial disputes among themselves that left them vulnerable when Hitler rolled around. The Poles actually beat back the Russians in one little war. Russia has always wanted to create a pan-slavic empire but it's never quite worked out for them.

The Russians were actually running out of men by the end of the war. Divisional strengths were way down.

And Stringer, not to start a thing, but I don't think "millions" perished in the then-East Prussia during the Soviet offensive, or even in the ugly aftermath/settling of scores/movement of Poland west-ward. Seems way too high. Incredibly nasty, obviously, but that was of course a direct consequence of what was unleashed by the Germans there, which had no parallel in modern times. Of course going back before that, like most of the world, it was one appalling mess of depredation and atrocity after another.

The British fully expected to hold Greece and environs as a tenant state, fully expected India to sit down and shut up, and expected a reverent Commonwealth from the African states. Some of that might, could have happened, but there wasn't enough financial or human capital left among Imperial adherents to do all that. And that was Churchill's portfolio.

England was essentially a socialist country and a Soviet ally from the 1920's on. It's one of history's little mistakes that Churchill even came to power.

399 That's why Conyers is still in the House at age 88 - he loves the power and is arrogant enough to believe Congress needs him. Same for John McCain and many others. You're ALL replaceable, guys, as it should be.

John Conyers doesn't know where he is most of the time. His handlers wouldn't allow the Detroit press to ask him questions during the last election.
He was run as a front for others in Detroit to make sure the graft pipleline continued and the relatives and friends all continued to have jobs. Conyers lawyer the other day during a Detroit press conference was trying to shame all the staffers who have come forward as being ungrateful for the fact that John has given them, their daughter and their friends jobs.
I'm not kidding, I couldn't believe he said that.

There was a rally Sunday for him at some black church in Detroit. The usual suspects were denouncing Nancy Pelosi , saying she didn't get to decide when Conyers would leave Congress that was up to him.
Me thinks they all protest too much.

400 Historically... any Democratic Government has about 4 years to prosecute a war before anti war forces really start.

We've now been at War for 16 years... but only because while we have
troops in combat worldwide, the Civilians here don't really feel it.

The US Military is at war... the US populace is not... because our Government does not even talk about war anymore.

The length and military/civil distinction is not new (frontier wars, Central American and Caribbean occupations) but the scope is quite different. As the Air Force Association likes to point out, the Air Force has been on a war footing and continuous operations since 1990.

===========================
Britain was bled out after the First World War. Not as badly as France, but depleted in terms of leadership and manpower. And the idea that it had become a "socialist" country and a Soviet ally from "the 1920's on" is ... ludicrous. Churchill was a pariah not because the UK was "socialist" but because because he opposed the Government of India Act (1935), supported Edward VIII, and the Conservatives held absolute power in Parliament with Prime Ministers Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain holding the reins.
A Soviet ally? Hell, Chamberlain sold out the Czechs because the alternative would be a Soviet alliance. There were serious discussions in 1939 between France and the UK over whether the Allies should provide military and naval support for the Finns during the Soviet invasion of Finland.
As for Gallipoli, the dithering of the RN and the RA gave the Germans and Turks time to build up their defenses. Yeah, the Brits lost a lot of battleships, but if they should have gone all in. Easy to say now.

402 249 Nelson was a great and aggressive admiral, but for sheer lunacy and daringet you want to look at Cochrane. Great Britain, where he posed every body off with his victories. Chile where afterm winning the naval side ofor the San Martin's revolution in record time they had a dispute about pay and he pirated one of the Chilean ships carrying pay to troops in Peru.
Then he was the Brazilian admiral in that revolution.

He died of a bladeer stone surgery
