As for Matt Lauer: It seems unlikely that NBC president Andy Lack just heard of this allegation against Lauer, because Variety and the New York Times have been working on stories about him for "weeks." Further, it seems unlikely that Lack believes that it merely "may" be the case that additional allegations are put forth, as he almost certainly knows the Variety and NYT stories are about multiple women.
Further, it appears that the allegation that caused the firing was about a "non-consensual" bit of touching (or worse), that is, some kind of sexual assault. I learned this the hard way a number of years ago when I was accused of felony rape by a woman I had literally never even seen. She was a certified public accountant in Indiana, upstanding member of her community and also apparently delusional. Her claims were grotesque, but they were highly specific. The assault she said took place in the back room of a restaurant in Louisville on a specific day at around 10:30 p.m. She included loads of graphic and horrifying detail. It was stomach-turning. And, yet, none of it, none of it was true. I spent the next two months trying to stay out of jail. I couldn't tell my children because I knew they would be ashamed. I couldn't tell my employer because I knew I would be fired immediately. I spoke only to lawyers and I paid them a fortune. I took a polygraph exam from the former head polygrapher at the FBI. I never stopped worrying that the charges would become public and destroy my life. Everyone accused of sex offense did something wrong. Everybody knows that. And I knew no one would believe otherwise. This isn't a defense of sexual harassment or misbehavior, obviously. It is just a reminder that real life is complicated. More complicated than sermonizing on Twitter. Sometimes the mob is wrong. Sometimes the innocent are crushed. That's always a tragedy, no matter what the charge is. Of course, crushing the innocent also may be the point of the exercise and we are seeing that.

I didn't do it, and apparently she just disliked me for some reason. I didn't even know her. My car was kind of old at the time, and was kind of beat up, so it was believable and I had no idea how to defend myself. Amazingly, the guy who actually did do it showed up and owned up to it, getting me off the hook. Pretty awkward for her, but she just stormed off.
The entire incident was just really, really weird.

How do I know? Because Leftist people and institutions generally treat their employees terribly. I know someone who worked on Capitol Hill, who was quite left-wing, who admitted that conservatives in Congress had a far better reputation for treating their staff well than liberals.
And as anyone who knows someone who has worked for a "We're Saving The Planet" nonprofit knows, organizations that brag about how wonderful they are generally treat their employees like dirt.
It makes sense that given that these people and organizations treat their people badly anyway, that sexual harassment would just be part of that.
Hollywood is just the purest exemplar of that - left-wingers boasting about how wonderful they are, coupled with thousands of beautiful women competing for the chance of being one of a handful of stars who are wealthy and famous, provides unparalleled opportunities for exploitation.
The Left thought they could use this to bash Trump, and pick up a Senate seat in Alabama, but are discovering to their horror that if there is going to be a Sexual Inquisition, they are going to be the ones in the cross-hairs.
Expect increasing calls that this has gone too far, and needs to be shut down.

I don't know that reporters have any credibility left to lose, but if they do, they need to lose it.
If there *were* any decent reporters, they should be on the story of why Hollywood/LA's courts have been so co-opted by the entertainment industry that entertainers regularly get away with crimes that would crush anyone else.

Take the Keillor allegation about touching a woman's back under her shirt. Is he a pervy old man? I don't know. But his story - while silly on its face - is also entirely plausible. Depending on the shirt the woman was wearing, where they were standing in relation to each other, what else was going on around them, its very possible that what happened was an honest, embarrassing accident. It's equally possible that he was looking for a quick grope b/c he's a pervy old man. I don't know. I wasn't there. I don't care for Garrison Keillor and I think his schtick got old a long time ago, but that doesn't mean I enjoy seeing him tarred and feathered for the kind of mistake that could happen to just about anybody if the situations were the same.
That goes for a lot of the most recent accusations swirling around out there. A lot of them read like accidents (as in Keillor's case) or clumsy attempts at flirting with disinterested women. If we start demonizing and dehumanizing men for trying to flirt with women who have no interest in them, and treating it like sexual harassment, we can just kiss the human race goodbye. Society is conditioned for men to make the "first move" in a new relationship, and if we start treating any unwanted attempt at a "first move" as sexual predation, we're doomed as a species.
That's NOT to say that every sexual misconduct allegation out there is "just flirting"; not by a long shot. The stuff that's been described about Weinstein, Spacey, Rattner, Conyers, and others is not normal, healthy behavior. It's gross, lurid and deserving of ridicule. It's also deserving of investigation to prove veracity. I happen to believe the accusations against these men, among others; I believe that Matt Lauer was also deservedly fired, because the speed with which he was terminated indicates there was real evidence of misconduct. There's no way NBC would summarily terminate the employment of their most high profile, highest paid talk show host without SOMETHING concrete backing them up. But I still want to know more, because I don't like scapegoating ANYBODY; it's far too easy to imagine that monster turning in my direction, or the direction of someone I love, and I want to rein it in.

Here's the problem. Laws cannot be 100% exact and specific because they have to deal with a wide range of various events and circumstances. You cannot make a law that says it is illegal to murder someone then list all the possible ways, to make sure they're covered.
But at the same time, that's supposed to be controlled and tempered by wise, learned, judicious, and understanding judges. Its supposed to be in the hands of people more interested in justice and truth than career or politics. Jurisprudence is not just a fancy word.
And we just don't have that any more. We have sleazy scumbags, political monsters, fools, career climbers, and corrupted people in every level of law and government. There cannot be justice this way. There cannot even be civilization.

So my brother kept his job - but he had some sleepless nights and it cost the company money to investigate.
Just as some employers might be reluctant to hire minorities (although they would never admit it, of course) because of concerns the race card will be played, hiring women might become problematic because of liars like that one. I think it all depends on the industry. I know of co-workers who have made accusations in regards to a verbally abusive boss (which were accurate) and all he received was a talking to and then, after several more times, he had to go to "anger management."

Plus, you have to look at the surrounding area. When Kevin Spacey was accused, 90 more people stood up and said "yep" and the press mentioned "everybody knew."
The more outrageous and bizarre the claim, the less likely I am to believe as well. Saying "he told me I had to swallow little Bill or I'd lose my job" okay, maybe. Saying "he said I had to dance naked in front of the police department then use the ficus as a dildo" ehh, now you're losing me.
Mere accusations with a flat denial, and no supporting evidence I cannot just believe. Especially if its from decades ago.

I saw a local tv anchor/reporter fired under this clause. The best part was that the station's investigative unit was doing a piece on a third party and stumbled upon the fact that the anchor/reporter was involved in a romantic relationship with the target of the investigation, who was married. They had secret footage of her working in public with the guy being investigated for corruption.
And that's how she was able to afford a new Jaguar.

thats part of why i got out of teaching elementary school and other good male teachers like me. Fathers already mistrust male teachers and as commenter's here have said several times "something wrong with men who want to be around little kids". Meanwhile, and i mean this in the strongest terms, female teachers are emasculating their sons. Blacks are overrepresented as criminals, therefore try to cover for them, under report, hide their identities.
Homosexuals are overrepresented when it comes to underage sexual abuse, so cover for them.

Note, I'm not defending sexual abuse. I'm saying that liberals claim to be concerned that *innocent* members of their *favored* groups will be unfairly targeted because of perceptions, but that doesn't seem to be an objective principle for them. They don't give a shit that innocent members of other groups will be unfairly targeted.
They seem to be falsely claiming to believe in a moral principle so that they can cheat: arbitrarily go with one side and use false arguments to favor them, and then use false arguments to persecute those on the other side who are innocent.

Time for my confession...
My fraternity in the early 80s was by and large an Animal House. Brothers go on a vacation to Florida and do time in prison for trying to buy and bring back a kilo of coke. Sofas tossed through closed upper story windows. Farm themed mixers featuring hay, chickens and goats.
We had a tradition called the "flying barracuda" at our weekly mixers (when high alcohol levels were reached) where 4-6 guys or so would grab another, carry him flat but face up, then charge through the crowded mixer floor to some young lady and he would bit her on the ass.
By and large no one, even the victim, seemed to mind that much. Don't recall any real scenes or slappings or reports to the university. Mixers were packed every week. Now, we didn't get much action with the finest sororities on campus, but we seemed plenty attractive to all of the party girls, some of whom would travel in each week from the big city to bang some rotating subset of fraternity brothers (often more than one a night).
