Updates on Matt Lauer, Garrison Keillor

As for Matt Lauer: It seems unlikely that NBC president Andy Lack just heard of this allegation against Lauer, because Variety and the New York Times have been working on stories about him for "weeks." Further, it seems unlikely that Lack believes that it merely "may" be the case that additional allegations are put forth, as he almost certainly knows the Variety and NYT stories are about multiple women.

Further, it appears that the allegation that caused the firing was about a "non-consensual" bit of touching (or worse), that is, some kind of sexual assault.

And it's not just the alleged touching -- it's the alleged intimidation of victims.

"Among the worst" in a grouping that includes Harvey Weinstein? This sounds like it will get worse before it gets worse.

As to Garrison Keillor, apparently there are allegations from two women, or two women reporting the same event. Keillor only seems to acknowledge a single event, which he claims was innocuous and a misunderstanding.

In a statement to the Minneapolis Star Tribune Keillor wrote: "I put my hand on a woman's bare back. I meant to pat her back after she told me about her unhappiness and her shirt was open and my hand went up it about six inches. She recoiled. I apologized. I sent her an email of apology later and she replied that she had forgiven me and not to think about it. We were friends. We continued to be friendly right up until her lawyer called."

...

He indicated in that email that two employees had made allegations.

"I have to respect the privacy of the two employees who made the allegations," he wrote. "I have my own recollection of events, but I don't want to take issue with Jon McTaggart's decision. I think the country is in the grip of a mania -- the whole Franken business is an absurdity -- and I wish someone who resist it (sic), but I expect MPR to look out for itself, and meanwhile I feel awfully lucky to have hung on for so long."

There's that "my recollection differs" defense we've heard from fellow Minnesotan Al Franken.

Speaking of the My Recollection Differs defense, magnate Richard Branson says he can't remember if he groped a woman in his Caribbean home or nah.

Richard Branson says he has no recollection of an episode at his Caribbean home in 2010 that led a woman to accuse him of sexual assault.

The billionaire has been accused of putting his face in the breasts of an American who was working as a backup singer for the English artist Joss Stone. The group was attending a party at Branson's Necker Island.

"He went 'brrrrrr' and just walked away. It was surreal, totally out of the blue," Antonia Jenae told British newspaper The Sun.

"His behavior was disgusting. I feel like it was sexual assault," she added. "Everyone was wondering why I wasn't angry because I'm usually a firebrand. But I was just too shocked."

His statement says that it's not just he himself who doesn't remember this, but his "family and friends" who were with him at the time. So this edges towards an actual denial (without quite being one).

Tucker Carlson had a very good commentary about the power of accusations, and the fact that some accusations are false. He even disclosed the (false) rape allegation made against him by a woman he calls "delusional." Definitely worth a watch, just as a reminder that not every accusation is true.

[N]ot everyone accused of a sex offense is guilty. Not every accuser is telling the truth. I learned this the hard way a number of years ago when I was accused of felony rape by a woman I had literally never even seen.

She was a certified public accountant in Indiana, upstanding member of her community and also apparently delusional. Her claims were grotesque, but they were highly specific. The assault she said took place in the back room of a restaurant in Louisville on a specific day at around 10:30 p.m. She included loads of graphic and horrifying detail. It was stomach-turning.

And, yet, none of it, none of it was true. I spent the next two months trying to stay out of jail.

I couldn't tell my children because I knew they would be ashamed. I couldn't tell my employer because I knew I would be fired immediately.

I spoke only to lawyers and I paid them a fortune. I took a polygraph exam from the former head polygrapher at the FBI.

I never stopped worrying that the charges would become public and destroy my life.

Everyone accused of sex offense did something wrong. Everybody knows that. And I knew no one would believe otherwise. This isn't a defense of sexual harassment or misbehavior, obviously. It is just a reminder that real life is complicated. More complicated than sermonizing on Twitter.

Sometimes the mob is wrong. Sometimes the innocent are crushed. That's always a tragedy, no matter what the charge is.

Of course, crushing the innocent also may be the point of the exercise and we are seeing that.

15 It's horrible, being accused of something you didn't do, especially something so shameful. Luckily I never had it as bad as Tucker, but I remember a time when I was about 20 when someone's car had been sideswiped in our neighborhood and some older woman came out and told the car owner that she had seen me do it.

I didn't do it, and apparently she just disliked me for some reason. I didn't even know her. My car was kind of old at the time, and was kind of beat up, so it was believable and I had no idea how to defend myself. Amazingly, the guy who actually did do it showed up and owned up to it, getting me off the hook. Pretty awkward for her, but she just stormed off.

The entire incident was just really, really weird.

79 Although you will run across the occasional right-wing sexual harasser, I think that the vast majority of sexual harassment cases are on the Left.

How do I know? Because Leftist people and institutions generally treat their employees terribly. I know someone who worked on Capitol Hill, who was quite left-wing, who admitted that conservatives in Congress had a far better reputation for treating their staff well than liberals.

And as anyone who knows someone who has worked for a "We're Saving The Planet" nonprofit knows, organizations that brag about how wonderful they are generally treat their employees like dirt.

It makes sense that given that these people and organizations treat their people badly anyway, that sexual harassment would just be part of that.

Hollywood is just the purest exemplar of that - left-wingers boasting about how wonderful they are, coupled with thousands of beautiful women competing for the chance of being one of a handful of stars who are wealthy and famous, provides unparalleled opportunities for exploitation.

The Left thought they could use this to bash Trump, and pick up a Senate seat in Alabama, but are discovering to their horror that if there is going to be a Sexual Inquisition, they are going to be the ones in the cross-hairs.

Expect increasing calls that this has gone too far, and needs to be shut down.

As Kurt Schlichter has noted, The Left is going to hate playing by the rules that they have established.

89 I'm just hoping that people don't get attached to enough fake accusations to derail the process of clearing the scum out of hollywood and politics.

That process isn't and can't be perfect or complete, and doesn't have to be.

Unfortunately stupid crap tribalism and hysteria are pretty much always in the way, so it's going to be a rough road.

It does look like the process is continuing, though, and it needs to.

I'm really hoping for prosecutions over actual (for real) assault and child abuse and rape.

*As much as possible* serious charges need to be adjudicated and not just result in quick denunciations and then get dropped. Because the end result there is going back to the old status quo after people realize there were no lasting consequences.

The GOP is largely insulated from this purge because any guilty Republican is destroyed at once, and the GOP is not the goal.

The donk purge will undermine GOP protestations of innocence later.

107 The Leftists used the sexual revolution against the squares to gain ascendancy. Until a few months ago it appeared as if they were completely successful and yet today it looks like the revolution is eating its children. Good!

It was also only a few months ago that I thought of the pendulum swing theory of events. Something, in this case the Left ascendancy, only goes one way more and more until it reaches its limit. Then suddenly the pendulum stops and begins its swing in the other direction. I didn't know at the time that we were on the cusp of the pendulum swing.

Another analogy for our social upheaval is how people describe going bankrupt, slowly and then suddenly.

134 I really want a definitive, bright line drawn between sleazy behavior and actual sexual assault. "He grabbed my rear end" is sleazy, but its not sexual assault. "He molested me when I was asleep and shoved his tongue down my throat" is sexual assault. "he grabbed my hand and put it down his drawers" is sexual assault. Not "he put a pube on my coke can" or "he said he wanted me to sit on his face."

This is as bad as the 90s, I remember the crap men had to put up with then. Anything you did that a woman didn't like was firing, even if she liked it from the guy in the corner office. There have to be objective standards, you can't just announce a guy did something that gave you bad feels and have him fired.

142 I'm with Tucker on this. Much as I delight in seeing the self-absorbed leftist media and political spheres being brought low by these sexual misconduct allegations, I'm also 100% certain that many of these claims are grossly inflated at best, completely false at worst. It's a witch hunt, and witch hunts are never good, even if the witches being targeted are people we don't like.

Take the Keillor allegation about touching a woman's back under her shirt. Is he a pervy old man? I don't know. But his story - while silly on its face - is also entirely plausible. Depending on the shirt the woman was wearing, where they were standing in relation to each other, what else was going on around them, its very possible that what happened was an honest, embarrassing accident. It's equally possible that he was looking for a quick grope b/c he's a pervy old man. I don't know. I wasn't there. I don't care for Garrison Keillor and I think his schtick got old a long time ago, but that doesn't mean I enjoy seeing him tarred and feathered for the kind of mistake that could happen to just about anybody if the situations were the same.

That goes for a lot of the most recent accusations swirling around out there. A lot of them read like accidents (as in Keillor's case) or clumsy attempts at flirting with disinterested women. If we start demonizing and dehumanizing men for trying to flirt with women who have no interest in them, and treating it like sexual harassment, we can just kiss the human race goodbye. Society is conditioned for men to make the "first move" in a new relationship, and if we start treating any unwanted attempt at a "first move" as sexual predation, we're doomed as a species.

That's NOT to say that every sexual misconduct allegation out there is "just flirting"; not by a long shot. The stuff that's been described about Weinstein, Spacey, Rattner, Conyers, and others is not normal, healthy behavior. It's gross, lurid and deserving of ridicule. It's also deserving of investigation to prove veracity. I happen to believe the accusations against these men, among others; I believe that Matt Lauer was also deservedly fired, because the speed with which he was terminated indicates there was real evidence of misconduct. There's no way NBC would summarily terminate the employment of their most high profile, highest paid talk show host without SOMETHING concrete backing them up. But I still want to know more, because I don't like scapegoating ANYBODY; it's far too easy to imagine that monster turning in my direction, or the direction of someone I love, and I want to rein it in.

And good on Tucker for pointing out that not all accusations are true. If you haven't seen The Hunt (Jagten) I highly, highly recommend it. It's about a man who is falsely accused of sexually abusing a child. It really nails the hysteria that can develop around such allegations.

What's interesting is that it's a Danish film, which goes to show this is a matter of human nature, not anything unique to American culture or politics.

It's about as believable as Harvey saying...

172 I really want a definitive, bright line drawn between sleazy behavior
and actual sexual assault. "He grabbed my rear end" is sleazy, but its
not sexual assault. "He molested me when I was asleep and shoved his
tongue down my throat" is sexual assault. "he grabbed my hand and put
it down his drawers" is sexual assault. Not "he put a pube on my coke
can" or "he said he wanted me to sit on his face."
----

The law is pretty vague and far reaching:

http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-charges/sexual-assault-overview.html

In other words, all men should, at all times, be at least two arms lengths away from all women other than your wives and possibly your mothers.

And don't talk. That's just inviting sexual harassment.

But at the same time, that's supposed to be controlled and tempered by wise, learned, judicious, and understanding judges. Its supposed to be in the hands of people more interested in justice and truth than career or politics. Jurisprudence is not just a fancy word.

And we just don't have that any more. We have sleazy scumbags, political monsters, fools, career climbers, and corrupted people in every level of law and government. There cannot be justice this way. There cannot even be civilization.

Unfortunately for the liar, she had emails saying that she meant to get my brother fired. Also long emails sent to her boyfriend that were very sexually explicit.

So my brother kept his job - but he had some sleepless nights and it cost the company money to investigate.

Just as some employers might be reluctant to hire minorities (although they would never admit it, of course) because of concerns the race card will be played, hiring women might become problematic because of liars like that one. Which hurts women like me who would never level a false charge against someone.

It's not that women who make accusations should not be believed. They should be taken seriously and then investigated until such time as the allegations are verified or shown to be false.

And the man who stands accused should be innocent until proven guilty.

Another coworker said Garrison was already a creepy heavy breather in his monologues and it wasn't a stretch.

However, if Lauer put his hand six inches up inside the back of some woman's shirt, that's not a misunderstanding. Putting your hand on some woman's back or shoulder is one thing, sticking your hand six inches up inside her shirt is very different and not an accident.

Pervy men have a way of seeing just how much they can get away with. They know exactly what they're doing. As a woman you learn to put a stop to it. Some women don't have the backbone to be mean. There's nothing wrong with say, "Get your god damn hand off me."

I want to see it happen, but the way feminists reacted to men sharing their stories as part of the #MeToo campaign tells me it won't happen. As someone said on twitter, the Maenads would go ballistic, claiming men are appropriating female suffering blah blah blah.

The only way we'll start to see women suffering consequences is if OTHER WOMEN come forward first to complain about unwanted lesbian advances. That's what will open the door. I'm sure it's happened, too; I just don't know if victims will be keen to come forward and risk being called homophobic.

318 The only way we'll start to see women suffering consequences is if OTHER WOMEN come forward first to complain about unwanted lesbian advances. That's what will open the door. I'm sure it's happened, too; I just don't know if victims will be keen to come forward and risk being called homophobic.

Our neighbor's daughter used to be passionate about softball, practicing it all the time, playing in tournaments and such all over the place, then suddenly dropped it like a bad habit (literally, in the space of a week).

Her mom marveled to me about the sudden change, but I suspect that lesbian advances may have had something to do with it, particularly as the girl is quite interested in boys (who are also interested in her).

329 but if the only defense you can put up is "My recollection differs" I think I have to defer to the accuser for the time being.

Right. The response of the accused factors into my reaction as well. Harvey Weinstein didn't say "that never happened" he went into a sex addiction resort spa and sort of waffled on it.

Plus, you have to look at the surrounding area. When Kevin Spacey was accused, 90 more people stood up and said "yep" and the press mentioned "everybody knew."

The more outrageous and bizarre the claim, the less likely I am to believe as well. Saying "he told me I had to swallow little Bill or I'd lose my job" okay, maybe. Saying "he said I had to dance naked in front of the police department then use the ficus as a dildo" ehh, now you're losing me.

Mere accusations with a flat denial, and no supporting evidence I cannot just believe. Especially if its from decades ago.

I saw a local tv anchor/reporter fired under this clause. The best part was that the station's investigative unit was doing a piece on a third party and stumbled upon the fact that the anchor/reporter was involved in a romantic relationship with the target of the investigation, who was married. They had secret footage of her working in public with the guy being investigated for corruption.

And that's how she was able to afford a new Jaguar.

401 And good on Tucker for pointing out that not all accusations are true. If you haven't seen The Hunt (Jagten) I highly, highly recommend it. It's about a man who is falsely accused of sexually abusing a child. It really nails the hysteria that can develop around such allegations.

What's interesting is that it's a Danish film, which goes to show this is a matter of human nature, not anything unique to American culture or politics.

thats part of why i got out of teaching elementary school and other good male teachers like me. Fathers already mistrust male teachers and as commenter's here have said several times "something wrong with men who want to be around little kids". Meanwhile, and i mean this in the strongest terms, female teachers are emasculating their sons. Oh yeah, and theres the openly gay male teacher who celebrates Justin Beibers birthday in their classroom and have his photo up behind his desk.

402 Again, completely OT. But I don't have the time or ability to keep up with all the content or comments on this site. Maybe I should just retire, as I have tried, from this site. But I believe that this site is still read and considered by some very important people. Maybe my opinions and thoughts will still be consideryed by people with the power to actuallly affect policy.

Please be patient with me as a 10 yr contributor of comments on this site, but my health (physical and mental) is failing. I can't read through 400 comments and more and affirm or dispute them anymore.

I only ask that the commenters do a better job of self-polilicing the other commenters, by sarcasm or just outright criticism, and improve the site back to its original quality, and respect.

403 This is what I don't get about the liberal media.

They'll say:

Blacks are overrepresented as criminals, therefore try to cover for them, under report, hide their identities.

Homosexuals are overrepresented when it comes to underage sexual abuse, so cover for them.

Muslims are overrepresented when it comes to terrorism, or domestic crimes like honor killings or FGM, so cover for them.

BLM are overrepresented when it comes to hate crimes, so cover for them.

Ok great. Why don't they say, men are overrepresented when it comes to sexual abuse, so let's cover for them?

Note, I'm not defending sexual abuse. I'm saying that liberals claim to be concerned that *innocent* members of their *favored* groups will be unfairly targeted because of perceptions, but that doesn't seem to be an objective principle for them. They don't give a shit that innocent members of other groups will be unfairly targeted.

They seem to be falsely claiming to believe in a moral principle so that they can cheat: arbitrarily go with one side and use false arguments to favor them, and then use false arguments to persecute those on the other side who are innocent.

Time for my confession...

My fraternity in the early 80s was by and large an Animal House. Brothers go on a vacation to Florida and do time in prison for trying to buy and bring back a kilo of coke. Sofas tossed through closed upper story windows. Farm themed mixers featuring hay, chickens and goats.

We had a tradition called the "flying barracuda" at our weekly mixers (when high alcohol levels were reached) where 4-6 guys or so would grab another, carry him flat but face up, then charge through the crowded mixer floor to some young lady and he would bit her on the ass.

By and large no one, even the victim, seemed to mind that much. Don't recall any real scenes or slappings or reports to the university. Mixers were packed every week. Now, we didn't get much action with the finest sororities on campus, but we seemed plenty attractive to all of the party girls, some of whom would travel in each week from the big city to bang some rotating subset of fraternity brothers (often more than one a night).
