Willow'd (once again!) in last thread: 655 I guess their endgame now is to cleanse/purify and then, filled with self-righteous indignation, go nuts on Sexual Harassment Trump in 2020. Posted by: Organ Chart at November 29, 2017 01:48 PM (qYCgM) Their timing is a bit off, then - by about a year. The American public has the attention span of fruitflies. By 2019 everyone will be sick to death of the topic. The left normally understands the value of timing - which is why the Roy Moore allegations just came out. (Even then, I would say they're losing their touch. Should have waited until about 1 and a half weeks before the election, like they did with Dubya and the drunk driving allegations. Enough time to get the word out and smear the candidate - not enough time to mount an effective rebuttal. ) Posted by: Donna and V. What exactly does acting presidential mean? My nephew who I love and respect used that excuse for not voting in 2016. Wouldn't vote for Hillary and couldn't bring himself to vote for PDT. Not presidential. I'm confused. Who writes the job description for president of the US? Isn't the president supposed to be a representative of the people of the US. We're not all alike. Somebody yesterday said NFL merchandise sales were down 20% (from last year/same time? dunno).
Anyway, have been wondering about that, and franchise revenue (the non-TV $ that owners get to themselves). Suppose it's impossible to track, since privately held companies. Read one of Travis' ESPN analyses, seems he thinks they are doome for fundamental, not political, reasons. Same reason newspapers and some other legacy media are in trouble, actually. Much more the biz model changes than their wildly unprofessional, distorted version of journalism, probably. Impossible to quantify or prove, but anecdotal evidence is overwhelming. ESPN needs to understand their demo ...
then either demand athletes not wear "kill the cops" socks and that they DO stand for the anthem. OR ... cover sports where more liberal beliefs are exercised, where "everyone gets a trophy", or basketball teams are required to have whites in numbers that fairly represent the population? Or women's soccer prime time Sundays, (losing to 15 and under boys teams). Or increase viewership in countries that dislike America as much as ESPN. Good luck marketing Budweiser to the 2.5 billion in India and China. Or if they think their market is the liberal coastal elite, maybe some French wine makers would pony up a billion or so to replace Budweiser? The internet and other issues may have made it hard on ESPN, BUT their way out was to provide superior sports commentary ... draw people into being fans for traditional sports reasons.
Instead they thought they'd add political commentary ... which just happened to mostly be contrary to their viewership's opinion. Or even to the non-political viewer, too invasive into their sports watching time. PC Sermons by some arrogant little dweeb like Costas. I've read that the NFL is down by about 20% since 2015.
It is my understanding that many NFL season ticket holders only go to a few games. They make money by selling the tickets to finance the games they go to or to make extra money. Now it is one thing when you might break even but it is another story entirely when you are actually losing money on the proposition. Even breaking even would be pointless since you have to expend time and energy which would still be a technical loss. And I've also read stories about bars and restaurants that play the games being near empty because of the protests. Again, it is my understanding that these establishments pay a fee to get a package that allows the games to be played. I could be wrong here. So I figure that there will be a lot of season ticket holders not renewing and a lot of sports bars not paying the fee for games. That means the death spiral is only beginning. The season ticket holders and the sports bar situation hasn't been factored in yet. Posted by: Moar Cowbell Please at November 29, 2017 02:29 PM (ILs+b) 248
Sure there are "secular" reasons the NFL is hurting, but though not empirically demonstrable, don't think there's any serious doubt that this year's woes are mostly due to the anthem antics. And the owners'/league office's ridiculous response.
On the "professional" bit, seems the NFL's degradation just mirrors that of much of society. The stupid "celebration" after 78% of all plays, things like that. Interesting that such crap is not allowed in other levels of the sport, or in other sports, generally. But my favorite is the unsportsmanlike penalties costing teams games. Even key games, playoff games. Astonishing. And (maybe only a Chargers issue, seen the last few seasons) also the inability to even run a team as well as a good high school team - not being able to organize and field your 2-minute offense, personnel mix-ups leading to penalties and wasted time-outs, things like that. Yeah. More sports, more variety. Cover the stuff not getting attention and that's interesting. Focus on the actual games and play. Fewer interviews. Fewer talking heads. Less analysis.
They've lost their ability to run the big sports with each one building their own network. Fine, just do wrap up stuff and maybe one show a week on each sport. But go for the rest of the sports. Don't try to build your network around tentpoles, it doesn't work any more. You can't run the best baseball and football games any longer, the leagues don't need you now. Just run sports, and love of sports and people who love and play sports. Look at what the league channels are doing. MLB is freaking great, emulate that. Don't keep doing what you are now, for crying out loud. Its like watching someone commit suicide with sandpaper. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 29, 2017 02:36 PM (39g3+) 286

Each year the NFL turns more and more into arena-style football to "up the excitement" and the game suffers. For one, there's not 32 quality QBs to run that kind of offense so if you don't have one you're SOL.
Now with the concussion concerns I feel like actual tacking will be even more rare. All the damn penalties hurt defense enough already. Might as well go play Madden. The game just isn't even what t was 10 years ago, and it's only getting worse, even without teams moving and the stupid politics. Posted by: brak at November 29, 2017 02:43 PM (WjCgM) 325

The senator has been accused of multiple instances of sexual harassment in recent weeks.

Still, every so often, instant judgment would be pretty welcome. Devoured by worms. Swallowed by the earth. Fire comes out of the altar. Something.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 29, 2017 03:01 PM (39g3+) Not to overthink this, but I think there's something to the idea that the stories of instant judgement like that are from people who really knew God, so their sin and rebellion were inexcusable. The assholes now we'd like to see zapped have no idea what they're doing or who they're rebelling against, so the judgement is deferred. That's what I tell myself, anyways. Posted by: alexthechick - Ragebunny. Hopping all around. at November 29, 2017 03:00 PM (mf5HN) It's the Colin Cowherd strategy of covering sports. For the little bit of time I used to listen to Cowherd on the radio, he basically said that ESPN only covering the Yankees and Red Sox made sense because they were the only teams that mattered. In other words only focus on the top dogs. However, you can't do that in sports because if the other teams in the league are worthless, your sports league is worthless.
