26 You know what the opposite of fear is?

Trust.

The left does not trust anyone, and demands they be given the power to implement their utopian schemes or everyone is evil, hateful, racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobic and everything else they scream.

Because they are afraid. Afraid of the world, afraid of everyone else, afraid of the future, afraid of the unknown, and afraid that maybe, just maybe those crazy people might be right.

They have no trust, so they only have fear.

Thanksgiving is about gratitude and trust.

57 This is life as a cutting-edge progressive:

http://www.berkeleyside.com/2017/11/22/intentional-vegetable-feast/

You must now be allergic to EVERYTHING, including:

- gluten
- dairy
- soy
- eggs
- nightshades (potato, tomato, eggplant, pepper, etc. etc.).
- alliums (onion and garlic)
... etc. etc.

Basically, everything that might imaginably be edible is now in the "allergy" spectrum.

And as a true hipster, you MUST be allergic to ALL of them!

We, meaning I, have been doing Thanksgiving for years as the YankeeFifths' Refugee Thanksgiving. My complaint about the turkey is the time. The sides are easy it is just having enough ovens to get them all done simultaneously. The pies are a bitch because if your oven is not calibrated just right you burn the crust then the whole thing is ruined.

The pies are done the cranberry bread is done and the house smells wonderful. Older daughter's turn to host this year, just a short drive in local
(read non existent) traffic so I don't worry.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving, people. We really DO have so much to give thanks for.

103 Happy Thanksgiving horde! From Casa Redux. Heading to a friend's place in CT for the day (compete with local HS football game viewing) ~ then off to a place we rented in a small coastal town for the weekend. I already finished my contributions to dinner: two pecan pies, butternut squash soup (to be served with sour cream, grated cheese and pine nuts), blackened Brussel sprouts with bacon, walnuts and onion and, of course some lovely American Sauvignon Blanc. I am also bringing the materials to make a round of signature cocktails to start: Cranberry Manhattans with Knob Creak bourbon. My friend is doing the bird and the potatoes and a pumpkin pie and some other stuff. She also just got a new puppy. It's a rescue mutt from post hurricane Puerto Rico. Will snap some pics for the pet thread. In case I don't speak to you all between now and then, blessings upon all ~ thanks to God for our wonderful Republic ( as messed up as t is right now it is still better than just about everything else) and remember to give thanks for the fact that Hilary Clinton will never, ever be POTUS.

115 When I was in grade school, Thanksgiving Eve was Bomb Drill Day. We called it a "Going Home Drill" because we went home early. The idea was that we had enough advance warning of a Soviet nuclear onslaught that we could go home and die instead of die in the school's hallway.

Of course they never called it that. It could be a drill for any emergency, like a tornado -- but sending children outdoors during a tornado threat didn't make sense, so we were practicing for Russian nukes.

I would always take these drills seriously. I'd walk home quickly according to the drill, and I wouldn't look around lest my eyes glance at the flash of an A-bomb on the horizon and go blind. Then I would stay in my house for the prescribed 30 minutes and cower in make-believe fear that the world was ending. Then I'd go outside and play football with my friends.

I miss the Cold War. The true meaning of Thanksgiving is lost without the Red Menace and its thermonuclear arsenal. Nowadays, I never happen across a building labeled as a fallout shelter. Now, it's all about turkey and Black Friday sales. We still have the turkey, but there's nary a thought about World War III. This makes me sad for the current generation of children who never prepared for a thermonuclear exchange.

Ah, well. I'm just being nostalgic, I guess.

117 if things get icy at thanksgiving dinner, remember, you can pull out this factoid:

"hey, did you hear, robby the robot just sold for the highest price ever for a movie prop - $5.4 million!"

this will deftly move the subject potentially disastrous political conflict to subjects everyone has an opinion of: pop culture and money. it's especially good for giving the smug a chance to feel morally superior by being against money. everybody wins!

Do whatever it takes, if you cook for a lot of people often, which I gather you do. It's wonderful. It's a luxury for sure, but when you have a big family and you're the one who hosts all the fiestas for both sides (me me me me), it's very worth it.

198 About a couple hours ago, I watched Charlie Brown try to kick a football but Lucy Van Pelt pulled it away. He did a flip in the air and landed on his back. It's a wonder the kid isn't paralyzed.

I haven't watched much football over the past couple of years, so I picture him playing ice hockey. Lucy's on the ice, too, being Lucy. Finally, Charlie Brown has had enough and he drops his stick and gloves and pulls the back of Lucy's sweater over her head and gives her what she's got coming to her. The ref gives him a five-minute major.

But here's where I get stuck. Sitting in the penalty box, would Charlie Brown say "Good grief" or "Rats"?

Canadian Thanksgiving is in October, after most of the crops are in, and weather is still normally amenable to travel.

205 It'll be a quiet T-Day here this year. Just the three of us: Mrs. JTB, myself, and Prince The Dog. So it will be a relaxing day. The turkey is done and the spuds, other sides and desserts are kept simple and easy. Bach CDs playing in the background, good coffee and an adult beverage to sip, with good books in reach. A cold morning walk with the pup. Our idea of a slice of heaven.

This will be Prince's first Thanksgiving with us. He smelled the turkey cooking for hours. Now he's resting to make sure he has the energy to chew tomorrow. For a dog, he's very good at planning ahead.

Well, I won't know how many maimed or injured until tomorrow. But I made jello (involved boiling water). I made cranberry sauce (involved boiling water and putting cranberries in). I made sweet potato casserole, which involved boiling water AND 4 ingredients.

I'm exhausted.

So for those things, and many others, I am thankful. Thank all of you and may you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Posted by: bluebell at November 22, 2017 09:56 PM (UoSKV)

Were you absent that day?

They had split up because he finally came out of the closet. (First thing I said to my husband the day we met them was 'That guy is gay'.) This guy was really wealthy. Owns the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn here in this town...along with various other hotels around the midwest, apartment buildings and a couple of restaurants.

Anywho...his gay lover asked him to meet him at a seedy hotel down the hwy from here. He did and it was either outright murder or sexual asphyxiation gone wrong.

So the lover calls a friend to ask him to 'help him with something' and goes to pick up the friend. While driving back to the seedy hotel he tells the friend he killed, let's call him 'Mike'. They go to the store and get tarps and cleaning supplies. Go to the apt. Mike was living in and take all his watches and some credit cards that were there. Go back to the seedy hotel and wrap 'Mike's' body in the tarp and put in back of Mike's Porsche SUV. While driving around trying to decide where they're going to hide the body, a cop pulls up behind them for something like a tail light being out. They proceed to tear ass down the hwy., get off on an exit, drive through someone's yard, through a fence and hit a tree. The two get out and run. 'Friend' was caught right away. Cop took him back to the car and went to look in the SUV...'Mike's' body was wrapped in a tarp in the back.
Took the cops a couple more hours to find the other guy.

Still both in prison awaiting trial...although the killer did try to escape prison by diggin with.a.spoon.

275 Two days of appetizer cooking. Good stuff.

We have 4/6 of our family with us on the Farm this year. We used to do all of the cookingl, but as the kids are excellent cooks in their own right, John just does the turkey and a couple of pies. I do the mashed potatoes, and this year the apps which come out at 11 and count for lunch horse ovaries.

I don't know you people from Stanley Miles but you may find this tale amusing.

The house is all decorated for Thanksgiving. Lots of homegrown pumpkin and gourd displays, old times Golden Wheat dinnerware set to go, festive cloths, etc. Except for the actual dining room table which has just a beautiful cloth. So I mentioned the other day that the only thing I had left to do was a centerpiece for the table.

Daughter Kat said in jest, "Hey! Tony can do that."

Her husband Tony is a wonderful man. Very smart. We've known him since he was a first year grad student working with John. He spent 20 minutes the other day looking for Tukey's famous EDA book that they found for me. [Insert so many more stories which speak to the breadth of his knowledge and good humor] But I would not have listed interior decorating among his strengths.

So he did some research on centerpieces. Worked on it for two days. Concluded that Thanksgiving centerpieces were basically attractively arranged dead plant material.

He asked this morning-- and this was hilarious-- if I had a candle holder, the kind Scrooge would have carried. Of course! And then if there were more leaves to be added to the table. He needed scale.

What he came up with was beautiful. And personal on a level that only someone whose known you for only years and years, and who fell in love with your daughter, could have come up with.

Three very old books (I have thousands), all pertaining to food, stacked up in vertically random fashion, topped with a hurricane lamp and doused with a pile of colorful leaves.

I am thankful that along life's way John & I have collected some really wonder friends and sons-in law.

Thanks for your thoughts, Ace. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

282 "Indigenous People Day"

Happily my parents (no family lived near us) when I was growing up just focused on a full on food celebration for T day. So my memories are only happy. Feel kinda bad for people that grew up in a SJW version of it improved like an Ivan Reitman movie. So tomorrow I will be thankful I grew up more like Beaver Cleaver than whatever they push now.

285 Thought I'd pop in before lights out...in about an hour.

I was puzzled over this phrase above:

"I do the mashed potatoes, and this year the apps which come out at 11 and count for lunch horse ovaries."

I could not understand it. Or decipher it. I thought, well, I'm not a farm girl, but horse ovaries sound like a weird thing.

Then it clicked. Apps were appetizers. And lunch horse ovaries were lunch hors-d'oeuvres. I laughed so hard I had tears.

Omgosh. Autocucumber strikes again, and it's a classic.
Horse ovaries, the Thanksgiving of kings.
