The Tragedy Of The Commons: Thanksgiving Style!

John Stossel is a bit too libertarian for my taste, but he makes rational and powerful arguments for economic freedom and privacy. The example he uses in the video to show the stark difference between the commons and private property is childish, but powerful nonetheless.

And maybe childish is good, because the leftists I have spoken with have been, in the main, pretty damned childlike in their ability to use logic.

14 Libertarianism, rightly understood, is a viable theory of the state and its relationship with the citizen. Unfortunately, it has become a shell of itself, outside of a few thinkers who are by no means popular with self-identified libertarians (LOLbertarians). It's a shame - it seems a natural fit for a free people, as once we were and might become again.

Much like what happened to the TEA party movement... the media chose the Libertarian spokesmen... who then defined the Libertarian movement.

So, what do you call someone who wants a strong military, closed borders, rule of a few JUST laws... smaller government... and a much smaller Foreign Policy?

Someone in the last thread talked about a story in the Krautish media which I didn't find and forget what it was because I got distracted by an argument about cod fishing regulations.

The tragedy of the commons is the reason that libertarians do support environmental regulation. If everyone can scoop up all the cod until they're gone, then they're gone, and the responsible fishers don't benefit.

Also, omg, the East Sea cod they were catching are tiny. New England and Maritime Canada cod stocks have been devastated and even at our worst no one kept cod that small. Unless there's something entirely different about East Sea cod genetics they're about a week away from not having any fish.

Other capitalist benefit of environmental regulations is pollution. Factory A sends its waste to the waste fairies who cleanse it for $100. Factory B dumps its waste in the river and can sell its products for $100 less. Its not as if the cost has gone away, the cost is being borne by the river. This cost is called an externality.

So, good work Stossel, but for god's sake please shave.

When they talk about less taxes, less regulation, less bureaucracy, I'm right there with them. Something like this I mentioned to JackStraw yesterday. OMG the lobster tails I *can* buy in my area are tiny. Pitiful little creatures. I won't buy them on general principles -- they should have been thrown back and given a couple more years of life.

68 Stossel is an honest guy, even if he does take the Libertarian thing a little far. Not as bad as a lot of other so-called modern Libertarians.

But it's compensation for all the Statist thuggery thinking that takes place among our betters. You know, "the Elites".

Heh. I've mentioned before that your husband's town has a graveyard with a headstone from 1624. I like to think that the Puritans were so annoying that it only took four years for him to run away and die a few miles up the coast.

(In fact there were fishing outposts all over the area before Plymouth was established).

The common area called Central Park was in bad shape and became an eyesore and crime-ridden place. I have new plates and getting the rusted screws out of the old plates was a nightmare. In fact on one, we had to cut the plate b/c the screw wouldn't release. Actually, the screw is still in there I think.

We used WD40 liberally to get the others out.

But any good advice? I can have some guy do it, but I hate that. They are L.P. for goodness sake. Not the transmission.

So, bottom line, rustproof screws for L.P.s?

If you're going to invoke the deity here, mind examining what else He issued in that regard? Hint: This little, too-often forgotten thing called "stewardship". A nice concept that, the idea that you take care of a thing so that you can make use of it, but future generations can, too. Not "strip it bare". Not "hands off forever". Show some self-discipline and everybody wins.

It does, of course, need some provision for what happens when someone won't go along with it...and that's where libertarianism, whether sanctioned by the divine or the merely mortal, tends to fall down.

When Governor Bradford finally gave each family their own plot of land, Philbrick says that entire families came out and worked their land, because they saw the value in having extra to sell and trade. The American work ethic was born. Though the Pilgrims had many more difficulties, they never again went hungry.

There are many externalities, especially in crossing borders. But since we are fighting wars and providing welfare for the poor, I'd at least like to see there be motivation for moving out of the welfare class and UP to the working class. As is, many are comfortable on welfare, and there are some levels of income (iirc) where making more has tax penalties.

The thing about the commons is that if a community does own it in common, generally it regulates itself, because if it doesn't the stocks crash and everyone is out of a living.

The problems occur when outsiders come in to make a killing, when there are subsidies where the catch is less important than actually catching, or there is serious economic problems that mean the participants have the choice to over -fish or starve.

There is such a thing as "economic extinction" of fishing stocks, that is where the catch is less than the cost of catching it, and the cost the fishers have to charge to keep going is so high the consumers won't pay it. Historically, with traditional fishing techniques, the economic extinction level left enough for the stocks to recover. Now I'm not so sure.

Government subsidies or supports make the actual cost unimportant, and only make the catching and important, that leads to overfishing

Put a little Vaseline on the screws when you put them in next time.

I put petroleum jelly on the base of any new light bulb that I install, and when they burn out, they can be removed without breaking off in your hand. This works especially well outdoor bulbs, which get really stuck after a few years. Put it just on the threads, not the electrical connection part on the bottom of the bulb.

I'd expect it to work for screws too. There is some reaction between unlike metals that causes them to get seriously stuck. I'm sure one of the Morons can explain this problem. If you put petroleum jelly on the screw, the two metals never actually touch. Done and dusted!

They sell nylon screws and nuts for that purpose, but I don't like them, because in extremely cold weather, the nylon screws can snap, and you lose a plate.
Most auto supply stores now sell plastic snap-in captive nuts, along with self-tapping hex head screws to go into them, expressly for mounting license plates, and most new cars are equipped with some version of that. Even if the screws become rusted, you can get them out of the plastic nuts. And the cold brittleness is not a problem.

174 Pretty anything you can buy in mild steel can be found in stainless. Try a auto shop, and if that doesn't pan out try a hardware store.

The main issue is finding the right fastener, some cars will take a lag-bolt and others need a machine screw of some sort.

'Course I once asked a mechanic to drill and tap a diamond plate bumper and used a bolt and lock-washer because I was tired of faffing around with plate holders that kept breaking.

182 Yeah Russia's pollution is horrendous. I remember a special in the National Geographic that showed pollution across the USSR, and Russia looked like a biohazard. I don't know if its ever been cleaned up but there's an entire lake not far from Moscow that is radioactive. Just a dump for radioactive waste. China is at least as bad if not worse, certainly their air pollution is incredibly bad.

In other words, they'll say the Earth is our "common" field and we can't escape that and insulate other nations from our carbon terrorism. Therefore there must be worldwide governance (like the Paris accord) to usurp what was formerly the decision making powers of sovereign nations.

They take the tragedy of the commons, expand it to a worldwide scenario, and then propose their own bozotic solution to it.

Of course they are full of horseshit since they are inventing non-existent problems and actually hurt third world countries by hobbling economic development. I'm just pointing out another stupid trick of theirs.

And yeah - he's too libertarian for my tastes too. (He fails to recognize the real damage that legalizing recreational drugs - yes, including my favorite, alcohol - does to society and society's right to outlaw such damaging commerce.)

However, I don't really feel that Stossel is exactly "childish" in his presentations. It's more that his tone of presentation is a bit "golly-gosh-gumbucks, can't you see the truth here". But counterbalancing that Pollyanna tone are multiple trump cards in the form of compelling demonstrations of irrefutable results that usually dispostively prove the larger point he is making.

And this, his Thanksgiving "special" video, is a powerful example of exactly that.
Can't wait to show this too my Bernie Sanders supporting finance.
