The Science Is Settled: Scientists Discover "Wetlands" Are a Major Producer of a *Real* Greenhouse Gas, Methane; "Models" Have Failed to Account for Large Amounts of Methane Being Produced by Wetlands

In other words, a major real greenhouse gas, methane, has been undermodeled in these #FakeNews models, so that increases in temperature have been attributed to carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas so weak it's an open question if it should be classified as a greenhouse gas at all.

But you're a Science Denier for reading this actual science.

COLUMBUS, Ohio–A study of a Lake Erie wetland suggests that scientists have vastly underestimated the number of places methane-producing microbes can survive -- and, as a result, today's global climate models may be misjudging the amount of methane being released into the atmosphere.

In the journal Nature Communications, researchers at The Ohio State University and their colleagues describe the discovery of the first known methane-producing microbe that is active in an oxygen-rich environment.

Oxygen is supposed to be toxic to such microbes, called methanogens, but the newly named Candidatus Methanothrix paradoxum thrives in it.

In fact, 80 percent of the methane in the wetland under study came from oxygenated soils. The microbe's habitat extends from the deepest parts of a wetland, which are devoid of oxygen, all the way to surface soils.

I think that means the methane being produced by wetlands is 500% what it had been estimated as. They assumed it could only be produced in the 20% of wetland soil that was oxygen-poor, but it turns out it can be produced from oxygenated soils too (that is, all soil, not just the 20% they previously assumed).

"We've always assumed that oxygen was toxic to all methanogens," said Kelly Wrighton, project leader and professor of microbiology at Ohio State. "That assumption is so far entrenched in our thinking that global climate models simply don't allow for methane production in the presence of oxygen. Our work shows that this way of thinking is outdated, and we may be grossly under-accounting for methane in our existing climate models."

More work needs to be done before researchers can determine exactly how much more methane is out there, but the microbe's habitat appears to be global.

...

Researchers have long known that wetlands are Earth's largest natural source of methane. They've placed estimates on the amount of methane produced globally based on the notion that only the oxygen-free portion of any wetland could harbor methanogens.

In just the last decade, ocean researchers have seen evidence of methane being produced in oxygenated water, and dubbed the phenomenon the "methane paradox," but no microorganism has been found to be responsible.

...

When doctoral student Jordan Angle analyzed the samples, he found something strange: Soils that were rich in oxygen contained more methane than soils that lacked oxygen.

"I didn't believe it, and thought he'd gotten the samples mixed up," Wrighton said.

The new methane-generating microbe will be given the common name "Al Franken's Busyhands," because it smells like ass.

Carbon dioxide is .02% of the atmosphere. Thats .0002. Its "global warming" affect is highly deabteable.

Methane is 0.00017% of our atmosphere. Draw your own conclusions.

Water .... on the other hand is MUCH better at being a greenhouse gas and the carrying capacity of the atmosphere for water is HUUUUUUUGE. Is so huge.... that when the carrying capacity is exceeded..... TRILLIONS of gallons of water falls from the sky and accumulate on the face of the earth in what normal thinking human beings call "rainfall".

But... not even scocialist envrio weenies are ready to call for the regulation of water on a planet that is covered miles deep in water over 70% of its surface.

I always like the story of an evolution debate in the late 1800's between a pastor and Thomas Huxley. 115 All this is completley ludicrous. Because the system self-balances, as it has for over a billion years.

All the studies show massive "global greening" around the world, as the "greenhouse gases" in the atmosphere act as airborne fertilizer -- which is why they're called "greenhouse gases," duh.

All that "global greening" results in plants re-absorbing the carbon out of the atmosphere and putting back into the plant structures.

So in the end, the amount of carbon in the atmosphere goes back to normal.

This is and endless cycle that has been going on since life began.

If there is a lot of carbon in the atmosphere, then there is a lot of plant growth, and the crbon is used up.

If there is a deficiency of carbon in the atmosphere, then there is diminished plant growth, so the carbon is allowed to accumulate more.

Back and forth, in a contant cycle, since the dawn of time.

The entire brouhaha about "greenhouse gases" causing deleterious "global warming" is 100% science-free balderdash.

153 I think there are more fundamental problems.

Earth's atmosphere/troposphere is not a "greenhouse" - or it remains to be demonstrated that, with all the systems of systems taken into account, it *acts* as a greenhouse.

Given that, the concept of "forcing" caused by "greenhouse" gases remains entirely uproven, and quite dubious. If you don't have a complete understanding of how an entire system of systems acts, and comes to equilibrium, or changes it equilibrium, how do you draw conclusions about the relative contribution of different supposed factors?

Also - not trivial - there is no evidence that the earth's climate (itself an over-simplified concept) has indeed warmed since human measurement became possible, or that it was warmed more than was observed/documented (though not precisely measured) in earlier human times. Sorry - the data "adjustment" when corrected does not leave any clear picture.

And in a system of systems that is more than a billion years old, the proxy data absolutely does not point to the eye-blink of history for which there are any measurements being unusual - that is, not entirely "natural" and explicable without any human contributions.

Correct, the theory seems fundamentally sound involving greenhouse gasses, but the problem is the atmosphere is monstrously more complex, and has various forces in play on it that a lab study lacks such as solar influences, oceans, etc.

Basically what works in "science land" of your sterile lab where you strip out all outside influences doesn't necessarily in the real world.

well ... the greening is indeed probably due at least partly to man's contributing CO2 to the atmosphere (beyond the normal swings) ... it's a good thing. (I don't know what methane does, or other carbon molecules) But there are other greenhouse gases much more abundant, like water vapor. The 400ppm CO2 has a greater effect as a "fertilizer" than it does as an insignificant greenhouse gas.

And the "greenhouse gas" name is because of the radiation effects of those gases "trapping the heat" (like in a greenhouse), not the airborne fertilizer benefits.

Its possible yeah. They never get it ALL out, because it becomes financially unfeasible, like gold mining. There's still gold in those mines quite a bit, but it would cost more to get the gold out than it would produce, with current methods. That's why you can go back to very old mines abandoned in the 19th century and get more today.

So it could be the remainder coming out of the nearby strata and filling the well slowly over time. Its very likely that is what is going on. Of course, some of it could be renewable petroleum being produced as well.

Not to mention that any measurement pre-digital is questionable whether they had accuracy to 0.1C. And before direct measurements of temperature models and surrogates like tree rings certainly can't produce a number to 0.1C, yet all of the climate charts show temperature variations through the years of 0.1C. My favorite memory from visiting relatives in Missouri was my grandma's new crotchety old husband trying out the black powder rifle at the fair. He handed his Pabst to my brother, shouldered that old boy up and cut loose.

The sound alone hit me like a fist, and I wasn't near. The cloud of smoke was so dense I could barely see the old man knocked on his ass. It was hilarious. He swore like only an old reprobate can. I learned new words.

"Multiculturalism, the “religion” of the European Union (EU) elites, enforced by many EU states through “diversity” programs, has begun to lose its luster."

I laughed only b/c they lost their "luster" 3 years ago when Merkel said "multiculturalism does not work."

That was before the influx of millions of migrants. When she single-handedly open the floodgates to the EU...not just Germany. And then refused to reverse her decision.

So they have not "begun" to lose their luster. They have been failures for over 3 years. Totally rusted out with decay.

Say what? I well recall seeing on one of the "sciency" channels just recently a report claiming that according to the "We love Science sexually" scientist crowd the largest source of natural methane on the planet was the ocean floors of the world; that just underneath the seabed there are huge deposits of methane. Not only that but that these deposits do bubble to the surface and into the atmosphere from time to time.

Wish they'd get their stories straight...

I own a .62 caliber flintlock/doglock pistol, a working English Civil War-era reproduction. It's a ginormous thing, with a metal plate on the butt for using as a club after the shot is expended. That gun sure puts the boom in ka-boom when you shoot it. Loud? Man, it's loud, with a big ball of flame and a cloud of black powder smoke.

More fun than a human being can stand.

Posted by: aelfheld at November 20, 2017 04:00 PM (IxDhF)

400 Be careful. Methane doesn't last long in the atmosphere when it's released--just a matter of weeks.

Many alarmists tout methane release as an extreme danger (re especially the cathrates at the bottoms of the oceans and the tundras.) And cows. Oh those stinky cows who 'release' a lot of it.

but, as I said, it doesn't last long in the atmosphere though a byproduct of methane chemical breakdown is, wait for it, CO2.

But the CO2 is ALREADY COUNTED as it spreads all around the planet. That's the important thing.

The climate models of much bigger problems than 'not counting methane'.
