Quote of The Day

Washington, D.C.
October 3, 1863

By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the Eighty-eighth.

By the President: Abraham Lincoln

William H. Seward,
Secretary of State

The true story of Thanksgiving.

In case you wanted to drop a turkey or two out of a plane. It's legal for now.

The annual, reasonably disgraceful tradition of an “anonymous” pilot dropping live turkeys from hundreds of feet in the air in Yellville, Arkansas, continued this fall, with several birds dropped on Oct. 14. The FAA said then they were looking into it, but it conceded to HuffPost on Saturday that there was nothing they could do to stop it.

Officials say the event, which is known locally as the “turkey drop,” is out of their control, because the pilot doesn’t appear to be breaking any state or local laws. The FAA told HuffPost they examined their own statutes relating to the matter and came to the same conclusion.

Types.
Deletes.

Never mind.

What will be a point of contention at the Dinner Table tomorrow? Trump/Clinton, Bears/Packers, Yankees/Red Sox? Green Beans, fruit or vegetable?

Whether you love them or want to eradicate them from the Earth, you'll probably see green beans on your Thanksgiving table this year.

And since you can't avoid them, you may as well impress your relatives with this fun bean fact: the green bean is actually not a vegetable, but a fruit.

At least to a botanist, anyway.

As long as they have Campbell's Golden Mushroom Soup and a boat load of French's French Fried Onions on them I really don't care.

Are you entertaining tomorrow? Are you feeding the gang turkey? How to carve that bird.

In just a few short hours Black Friday will be here. Need some extra cash for those presents?

4. Donate a Testicle. The payout for this is $35,000

On a episode of “Extreme Cheapskates “a Las Vegas man figured out a way to make some money by signing up for medical trials. He saved himself more than $750. That inspired him to take it one step further. Most recently he also agreed to donate one of his testicles. But they didn’t just leave him hanging. They replaced it with an artificial one and paid him $35,000. It was reported that he used the money to purchase a Nissan 370 Z.

Thanksgiving and other holiday dinners often include alcohol. How to set the mood.

The desired mood of your Thanksgiving meal should determine what type of alcohol you serve: red wine for a sleepy, relaxed atmosphere or spirits for a sexy, confident air. That's the conclusion of a new survey analyzing how different types of alcohol make people feel. The reasons behind the feelings aren't fully understood, but researchers say there are clear trends in the emotions certain alcoholic beverages brought out in 30,000 people, aged 18 to 34, from 21 countries. For example, more than 60% said red wine made them feel sleepy, while 53% said it made them feel relaxed, reports the Guardian. Similarly, nearly 60% of participants said spirits made them feel confident and energetic, while 42% said spirits made them feel sexy.

Let me guess, puking up a 12 pack on your host's shoes is not a good idea?

Do you have a nap planned for tomorrow? Don't blame it on the turkey.

Here’s the lowdown: turkey contains the amino acid L-tryptophan, which produces sleep-promoting serotonin and melatonin. But turkey has about the same amount of tryptophan as other meats. It may even have a built-in secret weapon against sleepiness: an abundance of protein, which can regulate insulin levels and actually combat fatigue. So don’t blame the turkey for your tiredness; the heavy load of carbs that made up the rest of the meal are likely the culprits. Here’s what turkey really does to your body.

Arkansas has no laws on the books regarding cruelty to animals? I would think that dropping semi-flightless birds from a plane, where 2 out of the 12 dies on impact with the water, would constitute cruelty.

WUT

Posted by: bluebell at November 22, 2017 09:56 PM (UoSKV)

Were you absent that day?

They had split up because he finally came out of the closet. (First thing I said to my husband the day we met them was 'That guy is gay'.) This guy was really wealthy. Owns the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn here in this town...along with various other hotels around the midwest, apartment buildings and a couple of restaurants.

Anywho...his gay lover asked him to meet him at a seedy hotel down the hwy from here. He did and it was either outright murder or sexual asphyxiation gone wrong.

So the lover calls a friend to ask him to 'help him with something' and goes to pick up the friend. While driving back to the seedy hotel he tells the friend he killed, let's call him 'Mike'. They go to the store and get tarps and cleaning supplies. Go to the apt. Mike was living in and take all his watches and some credit cards that were there. Go back to the seedy hotel and wrap 'Mike's' body in the tarp and put in back of Mike's Porsche SUV. While driving around trying to decide where they're going to hide the body, a cop pulls up behind them for something like a tail light being out. They proceed to tear ass down the hwy., get off on an exit, drive through someone's yard, through a fence and hit a tree. The two get out and run. 'Friend' was caught right away. Cop took him back to the car and went to look in the SUV...'Mike's' body was wrapped in a tarp in the back.
Took the cops a couple more hours to find the other guy.

Still both in prison awaiting trial...although the killer did try to escape prison by diggin with.a.spoon.

This reminds me of the story about the Canadian man who was banned for life from attending hockey games simply because he continued a time honored tradition (I think also ~50 years) of throwing an octopus onto the rink.

I'll make sweet potatoes, but I am the only one who eats 'em.. so a bit of dark meat, a big helping of dressing, some sweet potatoes and a ton of gravy, and I am good to go.

So.. tonight I made a whole pan of turkey necks just for me and my wife.. OMG were they good! 3 hours in a 350 degree oven with only salt/pepper and butter.. dayumn good! For those of you who have never partaken in turkey necks.. you must some day try them..

We're hosting 3/4 of our family, and this is wife of a little over one years first time meeting most of my family. (We live half a nation away from them).

Being of Italian descent, she has let her inner Dago freak flag fly creating Italian food for the feast, which of course includes all the traditional stuff.

Beef and Sausage Braciole, Beef and Sausage lasagna, Antipasto, Zuppa Toscana soup, Minestrone and Pasta Fagiole.

Folks had better be hungry and take go bags as this volume of food is insane. 2 refrigerators are already full.

And trust me, it's worth the trouble of typing true north old Martin and a Mandolin in the search box at utube. Worthy of being put up on an ont post even. As are a number of their songs - hint hint.

Of course, it's just old guy, singer/songwriter stuff... a lot of it anyway.

And weak lyrics at that.

Daddy made it through the big one
Home in forty five
A photograph of momma
Is what he swore kept him alive
A purple heart and an old guitar
Given by a dyin' friend
Daddy promised him he'd play it
If he made it to the end

An initiative proposal in California would, if it were to be verified for the ballot and pass, abolish the direct election of members of the state Assembly and state Senate, to replace them with delegates from "working committees".

Look at it this way, you probably couldn't eat more than two or three pounds of food if you had to. It isn't possible to gain more weight than what you consume. In point of fact, probably not half of what you eat can be converted to body mass. So, max damage couldn't be more than a pound or so.

That's my story, and I'm going with it.

171 Gotta share:

I was watching the TV Land original series "Teachers" last night. Anyway, I think at least one of the writers is a bit of a secret moron.

There was a scene where a young student catches his female teacher smoking, in her car. When the student calls her on it, she denies it even though it was obvious she's guilty. "I wasn't smoking!"

The kid replies, "sure you were! I saw you. Now I know both my heroes smoke! You, and Obama!"

Anyway, I thought it was a cute jab.

"Sec. 3. So how does that work? Is it like a conclave where the Roman Catholic cardinals have to select a new Pope? Doesn't that have the potential to get rather messy and drawn out? It does sound like a clusterf*ck.

390 Just got back from an early Thanksgiving dinner with my friends -- turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and (fresh!) green beans, topped off with pumpkin pie and whipped cream. But the real topper was a big slice of melodrama: the 1942 Bette Davis/Olivia de Haviland movie In This Our Life. Make that a slice and a half. After that we're all taking the day off tomorrow and just relax (although I have to go to work at 11 pm).

So, to all my fellow 'Rons and 'Ronettes at AoSHQ, a very Happy Thanksgiving!!

413 Infidel, thankfully family is coming to our house. Namely my other sister, her husband (they're estranged but get along just well enough to get through the holidays relatively bloodlessly) and their kids, my 16-year-old nephew Chase and 12-year-old (to be 13 in 201 niece, Skylar.

I especially try to have conversations with Skylar, but it's tough. She's a budding early teenager and is already getting pretty stick of grownups. I tell everyone, I'm not excited for her to turn 13 because it'll probably be 8 years before she will talk to any of us again.

Skylar is smart though. I joke she'll have a system: eyeroll to the left means 'yes,' eyeroll to the right means 'no.' ;-)

419 @ qdpsteve.

El Paso is lovely, in an arid desert kind of way.

The Hill Country NW of a line 'tween San Antonio and Austin, is spectacular.

S.E. TX, East South n' East of Houston? Less (flatter) terrain, more humid. But the saltwater proximity cannot be beat.

SOUTH Texas, Corpus down to Brownsville. More rural (to the extreme), and certain areas therein are BLUE STATE populations.

Do your diligence, and proceed accordingly.

And avoid the D/FW area at all costs.

Plano and Carrolton are Horde level conservative.

But the traffic and over built congestion make Houston look like Hooterville.

I have a sister and bro-in-law who, like me, don't want to wait until California is literally Apocalypse Now to leave. They want to pick up and move everything to another state, too.

As you all know, I personally like Nevada and Arizona, but am open-minded about the whole thing. Anyway, my bro-in-law likes... El Paso, Texas.

Anyone here from there, or lives there? Any thoughts? I know it's pretty hot in the summer.

An interesting place. The nicer parts of town are the portions further from the border. I agree with Jim: it is nice, in a desert, arid sort of way. I can see its appeal to people from CA: it has something like 300 days of sunshine a year. (Be advised that it is also a blue area.) It's a major city: about 550,000 people live there. The city across the river (Juarez) has a million IIRC.

I live in the Panhandle. Flat, featureless for the MOST part (except for overpasses). Of course, you hit any of the nearby canyons and it is spectacular. The cotton crops are being harvested so the sides of the roads have lots of cotton balls. Like El Paso, not much humidity up this way, though we have ag up here. Around El Paso, not as much.

If you want a larger city, El Paso seems fine to me.

You're allowed. I can understand that.

But it's an informative song. Dealing with the depression that a huge percentage of women incur after abortion.

It should play on a loop inside every Planned Parenthood.

509 Dang! Just clicked the link below the top photo that goes to Arlo Guthrie doing Alice's Restaurant. I was in the audience the day he first performed it on stage at the Newport Folk Festival. Unbelievable hit with the crowd because of the humor much more than the anti-war theme. In HS a friend and I used to perform it. He played guitar and I did the lyrics. A lot of fun. I suspect I can stll do swatches of the song. May have to find out later today.

513 Here is the insidious evil of the MSM.

Hollywood Reporter article called Style Notes:

"Melania Trump wears Stella McCartney to pardon Thanksgiving Turkey, J. Crew to close 39 stores."

Now why do you juxtapose two completely unrelated things?

These people need to be destroyed.

Woke (in the correct sense of the word) for a brief time this Thanksgiving AM. I'm thankful to be in western PA with part of my scattered birth family. I'm thankful to be here in little gray boxes land with some of the funniest, wisest and kindest folks with whom it has been my pleasure to share laughs, sorrows, prayers and stories.

May merciful healing and grace be granted to all those in need of it and may we remember that keeping the spirit of a free and independent people going is perhaps the best thing that we can do for our descendents. I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand.

A Happy Thanksgiving to all y'all!

Me? I'm headed to a buffet today, and I did enough visiting yesterday to last me a year. Maybe 2. I'm not all that sociable. Or for that matter, civilizable. And damn it Pixy, civilizable is a real word.

Happy Turkey Day all.

I would be unsurprised if the number of rifles that had a stoppage that could not be cleared by immediate action was zero.

Given 5000 rds on hand, I'd expect someone to bring multiple rifles to swap dre to barrels heating up, though.

Mid-80s, we swapped M16A1s for A2s. As part of that, we had to do a familiarization fire (not qualification). Basically, get used to the new trigger with burts instead of full auto, longer barrel, different handguards, etc. Fun shoot! 2 basic loads (420 rds total). After 4 or 5 mags, I needed to put on a glove to hold the handguard. That was bursts of 2 to 3 rds 5 secs or so apart.

522 I think original reports were 2 or three jammed rifles, he was in a hurry and with so many it jammed ( I assume he had a few w/ Bump Stocks that jamb easy) why clear just move to next?

523 512 ... Yeah. I can still hear the tempo and every intonation as I read your comment. Good memory. Saw a recent picture of Arlo and noticed we both have white hair these days. Guess it has been a while since high school.

Thanks! Dolly, our 3 yr old Brittany, informs me ours is headed in the right direct. She just came in from her pen, which is downwind of the pellet smoker. She came inside, smacking her chops.

First time with a turkey in that, as I got it in Sep. Been using a propane vertical box one for the past 15 yrs.

Put my sniffer by the smoke stack and I have to agree with ehr.

If I was lawyer for Rand Paul I'd seek the Internet records of the violent neighbor. See what he was browsing just prior to the attack. Then name names like Huffington Post, Daily Kos, WaPo, etc.

All the media who are creating this climate of violence on the left.

532 Addendum to #529 --

You can't prove a negative. For example, I don't believe that Elizabeth Warren leaves bowls of antifreeze around her house in order to kill neighborhood dogs, but no one can prove that she has never done this. Now you can truthfully say that the possibility that Elizabeth Warren poisons dogs has been considered, and there is no proof that she doesn't engage in this psychotic, depraved activity.

Does Senator Warren poison dogs? Well, that's just a question. At some point, it becomes a fair question. I'm just asking questions, after all. By the way, Senator Warren has never condemned this activity as far as I know.

Posted by: FireHorse at November 23, 2017 07:03 AM (zkGZ8)

533 The Sultanknish write up thought Warren will play the Sanders roll but also it will be a woman who will be the Democratic nomination, put the house on it
