The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Wish I had one of those. It would make getting dinner a lot easier than finding a straight stick and coaxing termites out of their mound. Not to mention keeping that leopard who lives in the next tree from eating me! You people are stupid that way...you have better weapons than just flinging poo but you are too afraid of them because...um...hell, I'm just a chimp.

sears gun.jpg
[@Author1971]

We have become a nation obsessed with danger, and most of it is imagined. The media and the Left conspire to change the country's opinion of guns. When once they were a fixture in many homes, and simply a tool in many cases, now they are a totem to be feared. They are a potent signal of the rapidly expanding divide between the coastal elites and the rest of the country.

Gun violence seems to be independent of gun laws, yet the no-nothings who govern us are hell bent on restricting our rights even more. There are two bills before my state legislature that will make illegal mail-order sales of ammunition, and further restrictexpand the definition of "assault rifles" to make them ridiculous. And why? Because the Democrat legislature has a new, compliant governor. Say what you will about Christie, he didn't sign any gun control bills while in office.

FBI: US Homicide Rate at 51-Year Low
homicide_51yr.JPG

The US homicide rate in 2014, the most recent year available, was 4.5 per 100,000. The 2014 total follows a long downward trend and is the lowest homicide rate recorded since 1963 when the rate was 4.6 per 100,000. To find a lower homicide rate, we must travel back to 1957 when the total homicide rate hit 4.0 per 100,000.

Homicide rates were considerably higher in the United States during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, but over the past 25 years, have fallen nearly continuously:

Interesting that the Gun Control Act of 1968 and the subsequent destruction of our rights seems not to correlate with the desired changes in homicide rates. However, the Immigration Act of 1965 sure correlates with the wrong sort of change.. So a rational argument could be made that to have any substantive effect on gun violence we should close the borders and return to pre-1968 gun laws.

Works for me!

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said Sunday the White House would be okay with dropping the repeal from the Senate plan. The House bill passed last week did not include the repeal of the mandate.

Walmart does what the other big boxes to- Strong-arm manufacturers into lowering prices which in turn forces them to lower the quality. Sears would not do that. What I can see is a board meeting in about 1999 where some young exec showed them Amazon.com and explained how Sears could do it bigger and better and was shut down by the stodgy old execs who proclaimed that people wanted the heft of their catalog in their hands or to see the merchandise on the shelves. Mere shadow of what they could have been. Legend is their engineers invented digital photography twice. Once in the 70s, and again in the 80s. Shelved both times. Didn't want to disrupt film sales. Could have built a new business model around digital, but didn't have the foresight. Now they are reduced to a few printing kiosks.

Either they didn't bleed your brakes properly, or other lines are corrupted.

Shimmy under breaking can be from numerous related problems.

Shimmy at specific speeds might just be a wheel weight knocked off.

Shimmy in drivetrain might be from additional rust / sorrosion related problem. Like the Spring Perches.

Manson, though, was no devil but a human being, as his death makes clear. I don't say that to soften or absolve him. But I don't believe in demons; people are frightening enough. Indeed, to accept Manson as a person, to see him through the filter of his humanity, is to acknowledge what we resist: that he was perhaps not so utterly different from the rest of us.

For those who have faith in an afterlife, I suppose there's some solace in imagining he will get his karmic comeuppance. But it makes more sense to me to see him as an agent of the hells we create on Earth.

Manson was a killer, yes, and he was a psychopath, but he was never otherworldly. The violence and the hatred he embodied may be his most human attribute.

Case dropped, or judge dropped it, I forget ... but AFTER Durbin's opponent lost under cloud of "under investigation by the FEC". 274 In an exclusive television interview, her first since The Washington Post revealed her story earlier this month, Corfman addressed critics who have questioned why she failed to raise her allegations earlier, telling TODAY's Savannah Guthrie, "It's very simple, really - I did tell people," including her friends and family and, later when she was an adult herself, her children.

And why did it take so long for you to sit for an interview? "Well, it took me some time to find a cadre of people who would vouch for my claim that I told them. And they all had to come up with stories about why they dismissed my claim or told someone else who did nothing."

Heh. My aunt was BFFs with the widow of a founder of KPMG, who had more money than she knew what to do with. The good thing is she always passed on her "used" cars to other family members, so her nieces and nephews were always taken care of.

Not surprisingly, White violent crime rate was about the same as you see in most European countries, and better than some; the Hispanic violent crime rate was a little bit better than what you find in most Latin American countries (but high), and black crime rates were - yeah, you guessed it. But on the big game hunting ban thinggy.

Seems he is implying he's unlikely to change his mind, and decide to approve the change to end certain import restrictions. He says it's hard to see how lifting them could help preserve elephant populations.

Unless things have changed, this seems misguided, or at least too generalized. Properly run preserves and parks have, for many years, in fact derived a lot of their revenue from fees for hunters. And game management absolutely does sometimes involve reducing numbers or changing the balance within herds.

At the height of the ivory crisis of the late 80s, happened to be in a meeting with Kenya's parks director (son of the famous scientist Leakey, of "Lucy" in Olduvai Gorge), and he readily acknowledged that well-run parks such as those in South Africa, Botswana, and (I think, back then) Zimbabwe needed that revenue, and that they were models of how things *should* work. He of course stressed that in Tanzania and Kenya, rule of law and border (translation: Somali poachers) issues simply made that model impossible at the time, thus the need for an ivory ban.

And I don't see any of that statement as being exculpatory or sympathetic towards Manson.

Quite the opposite.

Manson's evil was so evil precisely because it was Human in nature. No need to apply any special recourse to the demonic (any more than you would for any other human evil, that is).

Acknowledge his evil for what it is without watering it down as somehow different or special or in need of a special origin story. *That* would be exculpatory/sympathetic.

Perhaps i'm missing the gist of the argument though.

Plot of new film? Two gay men, one only 17, getting it on in Italy. *rolls eyes*

What IS it with all the pedo films lately?!? Geez louise. It's like the left had a creeping agenda and Perveywood blew that to smithereens.

Also, sounds like Armie Hammer's family tree is crawling with filthy rich marxist communists, one of them he is named after. Nice work if you can get it!

Some enterprising young screenwriter should just read up on the story behind Lawrence v. Texas. Perfect Oscar bait. Kevin Spacey would have been perfect as one of the leads before... you know.

343 >>>>off to the VA for another episode of "Indifferent Health Care"...

The Unofficial VA Motto:

Nothing is too good for our veterans.
(But we have to give them something.)
.
.
.Good luck. I got into it with the VA after my emergency room visit for chest pains and the ER Doctor said something bad was happening with my reflux and I needed the camera down my throat.

The VA said I need to do three years of ever increasing doses of different reflux meds before they can *allow* me to get the endoscopy.

I told the Doctor they were intentionally trying to kill me and then she said I need to avoid spicy food. I lost it after that.

I used to enjoy working on cars, but I'm just not physically able to do much any more. I hurt for days afterwards.

350 Apparently Tarantino's script for his new Manson film is the hottest thing, Sony snatched it up. What is his angle going to be, is my question. And what good he sees in dragging this all up again.
Posted by: LizLem at November 20, 2017 12:40 PM (hvf9s)

Knowing Tarantino, it will be insipid and nothing but gore, but a genuine biopic of the events, if done properly, could be good.

I am reminded of "Wonderland" (2003), about the infamous John Holmes and his involvement with a petty theft criminal gang and their subsequent murder. That was actually well done, at least to those of us in Cali who remember how all that went down.

I read something where Tarantino said the film didn't deal specifically with Manson or that Manson's murders were just a part of the film.

If I had to guess, probably someone stumbles into the middle of the Manson murders ala "Pulp Fiction" and the guys falling into the clutches of the rapist rednecks-

or maybe gets invited to the party where they were all killed and thinks that they've made it to the Big Time but.......*sad trombone*

Both of those would fit Tarantino's modus operandi.

As it happens, I've encountered a few genuinely evil people in my lifetime, real-deal psychopaths, men who liked hurting others because it felt good and because they could. Like Charles Manson, there was nothing 'otherworldly' about them in the religious or superstitious sense, but they really are another species. I hesitate to call them human.

Did Hillary really say Bubba would never have been re-elected if Fox News had been around? That seems like a stupid thing to say. Quite apart from the standard Dem crap fare about biased Fox, she's acknowledging she needs friendly media to make it. That's an admission no intelligent politician would make.
And did the father of the idiot basketball refuse to say thank you to DJT? I'm not sure about that story but that seems stupid on top of being ungracious. And any sentient being knows the father would be getting an invoice from the Chinese for a single bullet if Obama was still president.

364 Sad that the Moore stuff is getting so much press. AFAIK, the only two accusers who had borderline illegal stories are problematic. The one who claimed to meet him after talking on her phone (that didn't exist) and said that she told everyone at the time, seems to have her own issues not related to whatever she is alleging now. The other one has the clumsy forgery (initials after signature) and Allred.

366 Indeed, to accept Manson as a person, to see him through the filter of his humanity, is to acknowledge what we resist: that he was perhaps not so utterly different from the rest of us.

I'm trying to understand what the writer of this is trying to say, what is their point? We're all psychopathic monsters who stab pregnant women in the stomach with forks? We all carve swastikas in our foreheads? The guy was horrendous.

Yes, objectively he's no more hellbound than anyone else, outside the grace of God. But that doesn't make him no worse than the rest of us.

Yes, he's not some supernatural unearthly being. He's no demon. He's just a human being. But the inability to distinguish between moral character is a horrific, suicidal flaw.
