Thread before the Gardening Thread: The Gods of the Market Place [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

mktplc.jpg

The Forum is connected to the Marketplace, etc.

Happy Saturday, Horde! What a week. It's been kinda of hard for me to keep up with the latest approved opinions from our Gods of the Marketplace. The ground seems to be shifting under some of them. In the midst of all this, a troll-type guy in another venue accidentally reminded me of the video in which Bill Whittle recited Kipling's poem, The Gods of the Copy Book Headings. You may have seen it. It's below the fold if you would like to watch it again.

When Whittle re-worked Kipling's poem for modern ears, he replaced "Gods of the Market Place" with "Gods of the Here and the Now". That phrase takes on added meaning for me this week, with all the transitory moral posturing that has been going on. Prostration to each new pronouncement is still expected, it seems.

What statement from the Mount Olympus network surprised you the most this week?

Kipling's "Gods of the Copybook Headings" also became Whittle's "Gods of Wisdom and Virtue" for the purposes of the video. Speaking of Wisdom and Virtue, Maggie's Farm linked a piece on A Europe We Can Believe In. It includes 36 conservative tenets and is signed by a number of European intellectuals. I can hear the howls from the Gods of the Here and the Now. But it included some interesting ideas:

Paradoxically, Europe's multicultural enterprise, which denies the Christian roots of Europe, trades on the Christian ideal of universal charity in an exaggerated and unsustainable form. It requires from the European peoples a saintly degree of self-abnegation. We are to affirm the very colonization of our homelands and the demise of our culture as Europe's great twenty-first century glory--a collective act of self-sacrifice for the sake of some new global community of peace and prosperity that is being born. . .

There is a great deal of bad faith in this thinking. Most in our governing classes doubtless presume the superiority of European culture--which must not be affirmed in public in ways that might offend immigrants. Given that superiority, they think that assimilation will happen naturally, and quickly. In an ironic echo of the imperialist thinking of old, Europe's governing classes presume that, somehow, by the laws of nature or of history, 'they' will necessarily become like 'us'--and it is inconceivable that the reverse might be true.

This was followed by a different point further down the page:

Only empires are multicultural.

Take a look. What do you think?

Hope you have a great pre-Thanksgiving weekend. Doing anything interesting?

we just need to have a common/ideal tradition. and if that common tradition isn't upheld we go to cht.

I don't like the shortcut of calling harassment of a sexual nature 'Sexual Harassment'. It blurs the meaning.

It either is, or is not, harassment of a sexual nature. Obviously you can harass someone without it being of a sexual nature. Bag of dog poop, porch, ignite. Later, rinse, repeat.

Run what Franken did through that filter and it's obvious that photograph, taken on the plane ride home, was the culmination of repeated pattern of harassment of a sexual nature. He's a pig, unworthy of the title of Senator.

But I had expected a repeat of the first time I had it done: one cut, and I was clear. I guess I was just lucky that first time. Because of the extent of the cutting they did and the location, I had to get a plastic surgeon to stitch me up. Now I have a shiner and wear dark glasses everywhere. I know women who get their eyelids did go through this but this was not a vanity procedure and I reserve the right to kvetch...yada yada yada.

I have only one thing to say in closing: Morons, please stay current with your six month dermatologist visits if you have any history of skin cancer. I'm not even going to proselytize against sun bathing, just be reasonable about it. But those tanning booths are deadly.

I don't give the "governing classes" that much credit. They want to destroy the existing culture, so they import a hostile culture as a means to that end, and use emotional blackmail in order to trick their own people into being submissive and putting up with it.

Feminist writer Kate Harding wrote in the Washington Post that she doesn't think Sen. Al Franken should resign over sexual assault allegations because he is a Democrat.

Harding, the author of "Nasty Women: Feminism, Resistance, and Revolution in Trump's America" admitted that having Democratic abusers resign would be harmful to her own political goals, and thus those sexual assaulters and harassers should be forgiven. Franken is accused of forcibly kissing a woman and there is a photo of him groping her while she is sleeping.

No. You admonish Europeans to downplay their own culture, and encourage the immigrants to have a chip on their shoulder, as if they've been wronged in some way, of course there will be no "assimilation".

151 " Brattleboro would rather have the economy grow at 1% with a Presdent of Color rather then 4% with that H8ter Trump !!"

It is very useful to understand exactly why this is so, and to do that we must understand the purpose of economic growth. Economic growth does NOT primarily benefit the Elites; they have already got it made, they are already in control. In fact, by creating more wealth and empowering new persons and groups, economic growth can threaten their control.

Economic growth always primarily benefits those who need jobs, those who are up and coming, those who are young and are looking for work, and those who have a bit of ambition and who are looking forward to starting some new entrepreneurial enterprise - perhaps a new restaurant, perhaps their own firm. THESE are the people who need economic growth to flourish, and the elites have no use for them.

THAT is why a policy of economic growth does more for both the poor and the middle classes than any liberal policy ever devised can possibly do.

And the Elites hate it, and the Elites have always hated it.

I know you're a chick, I should have used the term wing chick but it doesn't have the same ring to it.

I tried to get my husband to be my wingman at a wedding. He sucks. We only knew the parents of the bride. I had a whole back story of who we were. He doesn't think I'm funny.
The guests were a bunch of nerdy engineers and they bought it. I told them my husband was my pilot. He did throw out a 10 hours bottle to throttle for me but his heart wasn't in it.
He was the DD that night. I was drunk.

Just for the record, Leean Tweeden was a civilian entertainer when that photo was taken. I don't think the photo itself is proof of groping; it's clearly a "gag" photo, with him mugging for the camera, but given the history of petty sexual harassment perpetrated by him against Tweeden, it's also clearly disturbing. Posing the photo itself could be considered an act of harassment in this instance, given the history.

Yeah, that's where the argument falls apart.

Many women simply don't think things out. They're told that Republican conservatives hate women because they believe in traditional family values.

Many liberal women don't look at the Big Picture and see that women who live in traditional families and have a stable marriage have better lives and emotionally healthier children.

They just rely on Traditional Values= Republican = Bad, and let The View, etc. tell them what to think. It's easier that way.

We don't know if he actually grabbed her or not. The photo isn't sure one way or the other, and who knows (as President Trump says) where he put his hands after that photo was taken.

But it doesn't really matter. That picture even if he wasn't touching her would get you fired from of 99 out of 100 jobs. Not to mention the nasty tongue kiss story, and the stalking story.

I don't believe stories just because they're told. A bare accusation is not enough. But a bare accusation plus the photo plus an admission? Now I'll buy what people say about him, yeah. Now he has to give some kind of compelling evidence that they aren't true.

The war against the West has been coordinated ... the PC left keep grabbing us, trying to stick their PC tongue down our throat and demand we accept their alien probing. But they claim rape if we stand up to them, or even try to speak on "their" campuses.

And as Franken did to his victim, even when fully rejected, he tries to ridicule and demonize the victim while we are sleeping (as America has been, mostly, for the last 50 years). Now we are deemed deplorable and racist, worthy of punching, if we don't accept the Franken Forked Tongue. Bite it Off next time.

If you want to impeach someone, you don't take it to the people, you try to convince your fellow congressmen. This isn't about impeachment or Trump at all. Its just fundraising.

I stopped the regular check-ups because I got sick of it. (I had to go every three months due to a melanoma.) The basal cell carcinoma that wasn't detected until last month grew to such an extent that they had to take a piece of skin the size of a quarter off my forehead. (The lesion itself pre-surgery looked about the size of a grain of wild rice.)

I usually don't like to post about medical issues. I'm doing this because it seems a lot of people dismiss the skin cancer reality, as did I, even having a case history - and it really is nothing to play with. It always seems to behave way off the template, too. Srsly, how much brain power does it take to realize that you have leverage when your support is in play? And conversely, when you're 100% in the bag already, you have ZERO leverage?

Any group too stupid to figure that out shouldn't be voting at all.

244 "Multiculturalism" commits the Odd Couple fallacy. Different nations can appreciate aspects of each others' culture, some of one's citizens can be friendly with citizens of the other. That does not mean it's a good idea to force them to live together.

And of course there's different types of multiculturalism. African Anglicans have a different culture than we do. If we must be multicultural, they would be preferable to machete wielding Somalis. Being more selective about immigration is also being multicultural.

And I still it's stupid that liberals think multiculturalism is a moral obligation (like reporting a crime). It's an aesthetic preference along the lines of preferring one flavor of ice cream over another. It can't be pushed on everybody.

256 The persistent problem with churches is that they always get infested with virtue signallers too, ESPECIALLY the liberal protestant churches these days. (ok, the reformed jewish movement too)

meaning that a goodly number - in some churches I've seen, I would even say most - aren't there because they believe in any particular thing, they're just there so other people can see them being there, and that makes them feel good about themselves. The only good thing about SJWism is that as it grows, these types are giving up on Christianity as a vent for their warped self expression and just moving into pure SJW-dom full time. And the true Christian Church is far better off without them.

286 Hearing Grannie talk about her congregants in Wisconsin, I'm reminded of my dear departed german grandparents from Milwaukee. And when I say German - grandma Irma was born in Milwaukee, but didn't learn to speak English until she was 9, when WW1 started and speaking German went out of fashion here in the states. Her dad had snuck over to the states by hiding in a coal barge of a freighter back in the 1880's. (so I guess I'm descended from an illegal alien)

While deep down they were decent, they were also constantly critical of everyone around them and themselves, if they talked at all. (theirs was not what you would call a happy house) You could tell when they were happy with something you did when they didn't say anything, and if they were really overjoyed they would look in your direction and kind of grunt a little bit. I remember when I was a kid that the first time I ever saw my grandmother acting truly happy was after grandpa had died. (even though to be fair she was usually the instigator of most of the arguments)

And if you're in a congregation of people like them, I can only pray for you.

Sure it does. Just more slowly maybe than a tanning bed. If a light is truly full-spectrum, it has the same spectral distribution as sunlight.

UV-A, the ultraviolet wavelengths down to 320 nm, comprises the vast majority of the UV incident on the earth's surface, and is responsible for most tanning, skin cancers, AND vitamin D production.

Essentially he points out that they've been trained to react and emote rather than think. And they've never learned that you can disagree with someone without it being about them or the person. You disagree with ideas, and you can only do so by understanding the idea you're disagreeing with.

You could tell when they were happy with something you did when they

in your direction and kind of grunt a little bit. I remember when I

NFL losing customers. News media can't pay it's bills. Disney can't seem to produce a money making movie and wants to unload ESPN.

The thing is, your church sounds a lot like mine used to be: lots of northern european immigrants and their kids, raised with a different culture than a lot of us. They don't express their appreciation or emotions the same. They care, they just don't show it by talk or sentiment. When you need them, they are there. When you don't they presume you can stand on your own and need nothing, as they would prefer to be thought of. Its kind of unsettling if you aren't used to it.

The very genesis of the insult 'redneck'.

Actually, I believe that it comes from the red scarves worn by the Covenanters during the 17th century wars of religion. The term originally meant "religious dissenter," and since the Scotch-Irish were mostly Presbyterian it gradually became an ethnic term.

Nope. Raised in Chino Hills, CA, an affluent suburb 40 miles east of L.A. with a mom and a dad. Brother Lonzo was signed by the Lakers this year. Dad is an obsessive, obnoxious media hound who apparently raised all three of his boys to be pro ball players, and nothing else really mattered.

This is a bit silly, trading on the ambiguity of the term "latino".

Just because he's from Cuba doesn't mean he's non caucasian. Looking at him, it seems obvious he has about as much non-caucasian lineage as Elizabeth Warren. His family are basically Spaniards who emigrated from Cuba.

He can't claim to be an ethnic minority like Cubans or Central Americans who have Indian and African ancestors in their lineage. As I said, playing the Elizabeth Warren card.

In fairness to the crook Menendez, he himself did not use the word "racism," for the obvious reason that he is white. He claimed anti-Latino bias, which is just as ridiculous and loathsome.

I suppose he is playing to his next jury. He cannot possibly believe that Obama (Holder/Lynch=Obama) would have gone after him out of ethnic hostility.

I wish the sleazy bastard had spoken the truth (as I see it.) Obama, who let all kinds of corruption and crime pass, went after Menendez because he dared to openly oppose the capitulations to Iran and Cuba.

But Menendez won't say that because (1) Democrat and (2) sleazy bastard. BIRM.

That's funny because in her interpretation of 1984 in What Happened, she made the government ("leaders, press, and experts") out to be the good guys. But one of their mottos was "he who controls the present controls the past", which means you can revise and rewrite history.

420 If multiculturalism means giving up your virgin daughters in the West Midlands of England to muslims immigrants then WTF is the purpose of an empire? A few bucks for the rich. Appointments to governor positions in remote countries for you elites. And then turn over your civilization to vandals.

Same thing here. What is the purpose of Amazon, Google, The Internet, and the whole Tech Revolution if we have sacrificed the entire black family culture and lower middle class to import some diseased, ignorant, third world ne'er do well to mow yards, nail boards, destroy school districts, decimate healthcare, and kill our women and children.

My guess is illegal aliens cost about $250 to $500 Billion per year. Who knows, maybe a Trillion. In my lifetime (hope I last another 20 years) there is no way to assimilate the illegal and legal immigrant population into our Judeo Christian society. That means we will become more multi-cultural society and accept more violence on women and children, more corruption, and more depravity. It sounds fun until it is your 10 year old daughter groomed to be a sex slave, your son forced into gangs, and your wife raped.
