EMT 11/12/17

Sunday EMT.

If you don't hear from me next weekend, I probably dropped either a tree or a minivan on myself.

The tree is a tulip poplar that went bad. Entire core rotted and although it is growing remarkably strongly around that, bits up high are threatening to fall due to the rot. Its family will tell you that it was just turning its life around, and thinking very strongly about going to college. But I am resolute in my judgement.

The minivan is a new/used purchase '12 Honda Odyssey. My 3 yr old girl spent 20 minutes exploring it, then stopped, looked at me and said "Daddy, I love this minivan so much!"

That said, it does need new front brakes, and I will do a brake flush while I put on new rotors and pads.

So it's pure redneck for the day - vehicle goes on blocks, and someone holds my beer while I drop a widow-maker.

1 Good Morning Morons today is Sunday, November 12, 2017. On this day in 1936 the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opened to traffic. I have been across that bridge many times and let me tell you, on a motorcycle it is an experience with all the wind gusts coming through the bay.

5 krakatoa how do you know you need new rotors? Normally unless you let the pads go to metal-to-metal contack and have to mill off too much of the thickness of the rotor to get rid of the scoring you don't have to replace the rotors.

6 Moore is fighting back at the WaPo essentially calling them liars and says they have a political agenda. That's a real no-shitter and we don't have to dig up scammers from 40 years ago to tell.

10 RINO Romney weighed in on the WaPo propaganda against Moore this week. And he came out with this totally ridiculous statement:

Careful taking down that tulip poplar, krak. They're comparatively weak trees. A damaged one could be unpredictable. Remember the 32 feet per second rule. Tie if off, if you can.

I had a couple of them hit by lightning a while back and they tore themselves into about a million chunks of wood. Really pathetically weak trees. But I said that already, but it bares repeating. Hardly worthwhile burning in fireplace or woodstove.

Innocent until proven guilty is for criminal convictions, not elections. I believe Leigh Corfman. Her account is too serious to ignore. Moore is unfit for office and should step aside.
__________________

Romney is such an ass-wipe.

Know who else gave an account of sexual misconduct that was "too serious to ignore" and had other sources backing it up? Jackie Coakley of UVA. She told a tale, full of lurid details, of being gang-raped at a UVA frat party. She had her friends tell the Rolling Stone reporter about how her boyfriend, Haven Monahan, who set her up for the "rape," had called them and sent them texts, both before and after the "rape." Only problem was, Mitt, it was all bullshit. Just because somebody tells a story with lots of details, and gives names of other people who say it's true, that doesn't mean it actually is true.

Nobody, other than the woman telling the tale, has corroborated the story about Moore molesting her when she was 14. The WaPo story says her friends recall her telling them it happened. That's not proof it happened, just that she told them it did.

The only part of the story that has been corroborated is that she and her mother were at the courthouse in 1979. The mother says they met Roy Moore and he was nice to them. So maybe the daughter, whose parents were in the midst of a divorce, wanted some male attention, and maybe she fantasized having a relationship with Moore. None of the girl's friends claim they ever saw her with Moore. The only thing they have said is that she told them she was seeing him. But teenage girls sometimes make-up stories about non-existent boyfriends to make themselves feel better (especially at stressful times, like when their dads have just left and their parents are divorcing).

We don't know what, if anything, happened between this girl and Roy Moore nearly 40 years ago, and we'll probably never know. But without more proof than just her word, it's unfair to condemn Moore as a child molester.

Tulip populars are in my opinion anyway, trees with little value. They drop a whole lot of crap on the ground, are weak as can be, and have little btu value for heating. They do get really tall, if you like really tall, really weak trees near a house. That's kind of a bad combination.

I've probably taken down a dozen or so in the time I've lived here. The easy ones, where I can easily duck behind another tree a couple feet away at the sound of the first *crack*.

I just hope all these GOPe types like the new standard of proof: all allegations of wrongdoing against a GOP candidate must be believed, regardless of how long ago the alleged conduct occurred, regardless of the lack of corroborating evidence, regardless of the credibility (or lack thereof) of the accuser. So long as the accuser makes a "serious" allegation, it must be accepted as true.

People from Alabama have been posting on FB that Moore's accuser, Leigh Corfman, has made several sexual misconduct allegations against several different ministers in Alabama. One person posted that Corfman's claim against one minister had been dismissed by some church board, after the board determined that she was not credible. I hope Moore's people are looking into these reports.

As we get closer to the 2018 Governors election, he seems to be morphing into a RINO in order to compete against the 12 or so Democrats seeking to run against him.

Rotors are so cheap, and easy to replace on a car like that (no fussing with wheel bearings necessary) that replacing the rotors is cheap insurance. It costs more to have the rotors turned.

Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at November 12, 2017 06:45 AM (ul9CR)

There is a Jane magnolia that is commonly referred to as a tulip tree. Tulip popular trees are exceptional choices for a landscaping if you consider their value as they grow in to your design. However, they take care and patience. They usually take about 8-10 years to start to produce blooms. With a lot of care and feeding, I've been able to get them to bloom at 5 years. If not overly prune, the trees can be quite beautiful when they bloom. The blooms are very large and complex. Usually the tree will put out 6-10 blooms, 25-30 the next and many, many blooms the following years. The leaves are great looking, many saying that the tulip shape of the leaves is where it derives it common name. In the fall they turn a bright yellow and then a burnt orange . One problem we have here in the Berkshires is that they retain their leaves until the first week of November which can be a problem if we get an early snow, like Halloween a few years ago

There are some old tulip poplars around here. But they are close to the roads and have been pruned to death by various crews that clear powerlines. The first branches maybe 40 feet off the ground, rendering the blooms unseeable. I've raised about 30 from 25 gallon containers over the last 25 years. I have two at the end of my driveway that have grown together to make a tunnel. Two weeks ago they were magnifique.

160 Replacing rotors mainly because the OEM parts used on that model year were made poorly, with lots of reports of warping and brake shimmy.

Figure while I'm down there, might as well.

I agree with all the derogatory comments inRe poplars. I'd have made them myself, but I didn't want to be called an arborist.

About all they are good for is running through the chipper for use around the raised beds. They really don't last more than a couple years, but I have a lot of trees left to take down, but just 2 more that are menacing: This one and one more tall one that I'll need to attack with felling wedges to keep it from falling into the forest and getting hung up.

I think they all have a fungus. Leaves turn spotty almost immediately in the spring.

Around the Berkshires we have a trash tree people call popple. They grow really tall and really fast, get diseases, cough up lots of limbs and a 18" section is heavier than a section of oak when green. It makes splitting tough but we make small starters out of it. I think it might be related to the aspen. I've cut down hundreds if not a thousand trees and never a tulip tree, but many popple

236 F1 race today should be interesting with Louis starting at the back. compare how well he comes thru the backers verses Max in Austin. Wonder if a risky pass on Ferrari by Mercedes is as bad as one by Red Bull.

238 Oh, and what GMC did with Chinese rotors should have put them out of business. What? Well what do you know!

One ton truck, driven gently, rotors all around, in two installments, before 10,000 miles. "Professional Grade." Reminded me of the tires and brakes and shocks and mufflers we used to get during the price wars in the 60's.

Chinese rotors are garbage. Chinese parts in general are garbage. I have run across Chinese parts where the word china was spelled CHIAN. How fucking trash do you have to be before you can't even get the spelling of your country right.

DJT sent everyone to their fainting couches clutching pearls because he said what he thought -- Devil take the hindmost. Moore appears to be similar.

DC HATES truth-tellers more than anything else in the entire world. Dangerous to speak truth to power.

Agree or disagree on various issues, the more truth-tellers elected to office the stronger we are as a polity.

Pretty much where I am. I have no idea if the charges are true, nobody does, and I do have a problem with 30+ year old guys hitting on 14 year olds. I have a problem with it if it is a Republican or a Democrat.

But I'm beyond sick to death of the one sided righteous indignation and if I was an Alabama voter I'd vote for Moore just to stick it to the blatantly biased media and the hypocritical left.

What was the last spending estimate for the Senate (R)s in AL -- $30 million, more? Unless you buy in, you can not join. Talk about Country Club Republicans.

Faith Hill evidently doesn't remember the lesson from the Dixie Chicks
on shitting on your fan base. She has joined the anti-gun nutters
calling for more gun control. This is what happens to a good TX MS girl
when they get famous.

248 plus WGAS (who gives a shit) about gun control talk from anyone who has bodyguards, a security detail when/where they work, and who lives in a gated community.
Triple for celebrities who have ever fired a weapon in the course of making a movie.

Unless gun control statements precede or are followed by "and so I am giving up my personal weapons and my bodyguards," WGAS.

250 We bought a used Odyssey 2 years ago (2013 coming off a lease), the kids love it and it's super useful. I just don't care for the way it drives - like an Accord, nice and smooth, but I prefer the bouncy body on frame feel of a full size truck or SUV. I would love an SUV that had rear sliding doors, why is this not a thing?

Anyways, I changed the oil on it about an hour ago. I'm probably in need of replacing the front rotors and pads soon.
