They announced this only yesterday, giving the reason that Hurricane Harvey had pushed the 9/11 "Fun Run" back to today, and they couldn't host both at once.
They chose...poorly.
Yesterday morning, local talk radio host Michael Berry, (KTRH AM 740), took the reins.
Berry also owns a very large entertainment venue, the Redneck Country Club, in Stafford, TX, a suburb contiguous with Houston on the South West side.
He announced that his club, and the City of Stafford, would take up Houston's slack and hold the parade, in conjunction with the club's already planned celebration of the USMC Birthday, a Saturday observation in order to accommodate as many who wanted to attend.
In under twenty four hours, the parade got fully organized. Vintage cars. Mil-Surp vehicles. Veterans organizations in uniform, in step, in the parade. Extra BBQ pits and cooking teams. Enough to feed thousands, in fact. Marching bands. Parade Princesses.
And the Grand Marshall, "Mattress Mac", the owner of Gallery Furniture, one of the most generous businessmen this country has.
The parade is just now wrapping up, and the grounds of The Redneck Country Club are a sea of well fed patriots, loving one another, their respective Services, Texas, and the United States of America.
I'll try to find some links to news video.
But I wanted to get the story told, soon as I was able.

I was just looking. Many printmaking techniques will flip the original image. So that explains it. It would be quite common from photos to be printed that were mirror images of the actual scene.
Not I'm talking about old film techniques, not modern digital stuff.

That is Sgt Major Rudy Weiners, who served from 1942 to 1967. Purple Hearts from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. There's also a Silver Star in there.

Easy to get away with if there is no writing in the image. But harder when dealing with machines. For example the M-60 above. Or flipping a photo of an F-51D Mustang in Korea, only because the landing light is in the wrong wheel well and the pitch of the propeller blades was reversed gave it away.

38 I live in a smallish town in Central Washington State. On a gloomy, misty overcast day we celebrated Veteran's Day with a parade. We had a big crows who cheered. Yes, cheered, for the men and women marching. People saluted the flag,hand over heart. There were three gentlemen from a Civil War re-enactor's group. One in Gray with a Battle Flag. No one died, no one fainted. For damn sure no one protested. No cops in evidence as they already knew the parade would be peaceful. So glad I escaped from the festering cesspool that is Seattle.

Yeah, but that's like saying if there were no Industrial Revolution.... It's not like there was a single event that could have prevented it (or the Russian Revolution). There *is* a single event which could have prevented WWII, and that's the fucking French enforcing their own fucking Treaty of Versailles when Hitler remilitarized the Rhine in 1936 with less than a regiment of lightly-armed troops and the French had the best tank force in the world. They could've crushed the Bosch which would have led to a military coup against Hitler and that would have been that. I'd have more family members alive today. Thanks, Frogs. When a total stranger says, "I forgive you" to a bank robber or murderer do those words have any weight to them as opposed to when a victim of such a crime says them? That stranger is just virtue signaling.
Too often those of us who did serve face a similar situation. Total strangers going "Thank you!" if you in passing mention that you served. It always leaves me scratching my head because I volunteered and served but didn't do anything spectacular and oh yeah who are you?

We have seen this repeatedly - the mainstream media uncovers an old scandal involving a Republican candidate, holds on to the story, and releases it at a point to cause maximum political damage.
They don't do this to Democrats, for some reason.
We saw this with George W. Bush's old DUI arrest, which was released by the Washington Post four days before the election (and nearly elected Al Gore), and we saw it again with Trump and the Access Hollywood tape (released by the Washington Post a month before the election).
One reason why the Hillary campaign was so self-confident about winning is that they **knew** that the Access Hollywood tape was coming out, and figured that that would destroy Trump, and give Hillary a landslide victory.
The Washington Post basically serves as a wing of the Democratic Party in the timing of releasing these things.
So, they pull the same trick with Moore, after it is to late to replace him on the ballot, and figure that that will give them a Democratic senator in Alabama(!). Not surprising that there is some pushback.

I look back to those who served in less military friendly times. Those who were spit on when they returned home and called "murderers", "baby-killers", and such. I would rather a brief display of unearned gratitude from a stranger than have any veteran have to go through that crap again.

What does Stalin do? Probably kills a lot more of his own people. He was a paranoid bastard. Does he turn his eyes from inward to the West?
How does America fare? The war did a lot to further transform the agrarian powerhouse into a more industrial one. Does Japan still kick things off? Do they still choose to attack America instead of British holdings (remember, in this timeline, the British are not under threat and still have their empire.) Or, when faced with unoccupied rivals all around, do they choose to find better things to do with their time- other than their Chinese and SE asian adventures that had already begun?
It is an interesting question.

Turns out that yes, there is a combat 'v' device on the COM if it's awarded for, oddly enough, valor in combat.
I've never seen one with it in the wild, which isn't surprising given the particular community I was in. Mostly I've seen a COM as an end-of-tour award for Lieutenant Commanders+ and Senior Chiefs (Senior Chieves?)+ because they're too senior for another Navy Achievement Medal that junior people get for an EoT award.

I've never found it condescending or self-serving. My discomfort comes from the knowledge that I never saw combat, while my baby brother served three tours in Iraq.
But I know that it's sincere, almost always. The exception being when it comes from a politician or the NFL.

Sometimes it got hairy "wait we just lost an engine and still have five hours of jungle?" and sometimes it was boring "why am I shivering in this van?" Along those lines - Suppose Germany doesn't start a war, but instead decides to forge a new pan-European alliance which they would control; they could gradually transfer all state functions over to the international body, and of course due to the wealth and diligence the German Government could actually control all of it, and slowly let all but the purely local functions of the national governments fade away.
But what to call it - European... confederation? no, that's not right, gotta be something better out there....

It depends on when: 1938: Yeah, you probably have a Germany reminiscent of pre WW1 Germany that's in the catbird seat in Europe. I think you have a Cold War situation between Germany and the Soviets, with the Soviets eventually funding insurgencies in France and the Balkans, which is where you get a possible flashpoint. Germany remains intact as a superpower in Europe.
1944: The Junta starts purging itself of any Nazi influence and tries to cut a separate peace with the Western Allies, offering up lots of senior Nazis to sweeten the pot. The Germans fall back to the Siegfried line fairly quickly and shift as much manpower as possible to the east. Sane military leadership, likely under Rommel, just might have stalled the Russian advance, possibly allowing them to be brought to the peace table. Germany winds up in a similar position to that post WW1, likely losing East Prussia though.

Ok, the biggest question of Germany fending off a Soviet invasion is: how. They would be in exactly the same situation as the US was with the Soviets: extraordinary disparity in manpower. On the other hand, their military tech would be far in advance. But let's leave nuclear off the table for the moment.
So, defense in depth? Preemptive defensive invasion/encirclement of the invasion? I do not know a lot about the US plans for a Soviet invasion of the West.

I think one of the biggest lessons of WW1 & 2 is that an invasion with even a huge army can be quickly blocked if that army isn't heavily mechanized. And before the US pumped the Soviets full of tanks and equipment, the Red Army was little more than a mob of peasants with rifles, especially after Stalin purged the officer corps.

The New Deal asserted the primacy of the Federal government over the states, and also took steps to centralize control of the economy. The wartime mobilization cemented many of those things in place. By the 1950s, hardly anybody was talking about rolling back the New Deal. It had become the "new normal".

Failure to have the infantry as mechanized as the panzer units meant the tactic of Kern unt Kessel failed because the infantry was too slow to respond when the panzers encircled large Russian formations. So the Russian forces slipped through to fight another day, assuming the NKVD did not shoot them for desertion.
Not taking Leningrad. That should have been done and then worry about starving Russians later. That siege ate up a lot of men and material. And it might have kept the Finns from The Continuation War.
Army Group South should have been given one mission, not two. Either the oil fields or Stalingrad. Not both.

Someone already mentioned this, but if the Soviets start a war in this context in say 1942 with a Wehrmacht dominated Germany post Hitler, I think you see something similar to the Winter War for the same reasons (I.e., shitty leadership due to the purges, perhaps even getting Zhukov), only against an opponent that can punch back HARD. The Germans likely would have been more pragmatic with the locals once they got into Russia: Instead of alienating pissed off Ukrainians and Belarussians, they would have allied with them. They would have stood a good chance against the Soviets.

Given that many of us were in the service when spitting on us was considered de rigueur in certain circles.
When we were advised to not wear our uniforms in our own country. (and we received a very heartfelt thank you in other countries.)
When the constant drum beat from the treasonous media was that we were baby killers and drug addicts and would kill and murder innocent people here.

Military modernization was getting under way, belatedly, and the officer corps had been devastated by purges. Things were in very bad shape. Stalin showed zero serious interest in using actual Soviet power, as opposed to int'l commie intrigues (which were essentially free, and easy), outside Soviet borders, prior to WWII. Military modernization was mostly defensive in nature, lots of resources into fortifications. If war hadn't literally forced him to adjust course, who knows how far the military purges would have gone.
He was focused on killing millions of his own citizens,crushing all institutions that might challenge him, and creating the insane mass terror he actually achieved by the time of the army purges, which were the last before the war.

It's only two dimensional if you don't flip it. That makes the two axises vertical and horizontal. But, if you stat thinking about looking at it from the back, the flip side, you are adding a 3rd dimension.
You can "rotate" a picture in either sense. But, there is a definition of terms in photo manipulation. Rotation refers to rotating in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.

One of the things Hitler was probably thinking: "Stalin is preparing." The thing is, I am not sure if he knew about the army purges (the most recent Military purge before Barbarossa went all the way down to the sergeant level, I believe- and it was not small.)
He probably thought that speed was of the essence in order to attack the Soviets before they were ready, when- if he had just waited- Stalin might have left himself in an even worse spot for defending against an invasion the following year.

The trouble with "Thank you for your service" is that it is formulaic and glib. To an extent, formulas and glibness make the world go 'round. Have a nice day -- what could be less offensive? Yet, there you are. Once a thing catches on, you start getting sick of it right away. Even, or especially, if it relates to something important. Stupid people are going to say it to you.
I notice fewer winter "White Sales" (!), and not as many used car specials on presidents' birthdays that have had to move over for other holidays. And now we see special shopping opportunities on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, "in honor of those who served." Certainly none of that is intended as a tawdry bastardization of good men dying too young. But, it works out.

The Japanese should have controlled the excesses in the Military, which would have required direct intervention from the Throne, with no certainty it would work.
A withdrawal from non-Manchurian China and the resumption of trading in oil with the US would have been the smart move.

I got two things out of that: a bill that made me gasp, and my new card.
Guess. Go ahead, guess what my new account number is.
And then I immediately got a followup to tell me that my account number will be changed sometime in the next year to avoid displaying the SS number, and that I will have to contact all my providers to notify them.
This is going to be great. I can tell already!

The problem with identity theft is that companies are allowed to issue loans and do business with people on the flimsiest of credentials and then, somehow, we are held responsible for the irresponsibility of those companies.
I remember, back when online sales first became a thing, that I was astounded at how much easier it was to charge something online than it was in person. And then all the stories about identity theft (and how people were given credit and stuff in other people's names with nothing more than a few numbers presented) started piling up.
It still astounds me that vendors and lenders can be totally irresponsible and the victims of that irresponsibility are held liable (and even if they aren't they are still found publicly "guilty" by the credit report services) for it. It's insane, really.
But ... now we're in the days when I can't carry around $10,000 of my own money without a note from my mother proving that it isn't "drug money" or funds for some other type of illicit activity. I'm no longer allowed to carry around my own cash.
So, I guess the insanity has completely woven itself through our system. Better than just a half-assed job, I guess ...

So - take the Dutch East Indies, and present-day Brunei - but don't attack US forces. The Pearl Harbor attack was literally designed to pre-empt interference with the southern offensive. No need (as subsequent events confirmed, to the extent that can be done). Absent an attack on Hawaii or US forces in the Philippines, good luck to FDR getting us into a war with Japan.
And good luck to any US attempt to interfere with Japan's seizure of Indonesia, Borneo, Malaysia, and Singapore. With the land-based airpower they had in the region and (at that time) basically superior navy and naval air, Japan could probably have easily weathered any US effort to thwart the southern offensive. And devastated the US military even more than it was up to the fall of '42, probably the low-point in our weakness in the Pacific.

Indeed. Fact is, the Japanese slaughtered at least twice as many as the Nazis did, and in ways that would make a serial killer puke. Not because of a lack of supervision, but as a function of national policy.
There's that scene in the recent Godzilla remake where Ken Watanabe pulls out his father's Hiroshima watch and basically tries to shame the American admiral when they're talking about nukes. That shit pissed me off. I expected that the admiral should have repeatedly nut-punched Watanabe while screaming "Nanking", "Bataan", and "Unit 731".

They're a large population living on a resource-poor archipelago, this is natural selection at work. In a few generations, the Japanese population will be smaller but more genetically fit. The cult of Hiroshima used to be mocked by many in Japan, but it's never received the scorn and refutation it deserves elsewhere.
It was a bomb, just a big one. Nothing magic about it. Not really, in context, a game-changer (as the utterly ruthless but rational Japanese army leadership sincerely reported to the throne following the attack). Casualty figures naturally are unreliable due to war-time chaos and destruction, but Tokyo's losses March 8/9 are in the same league as Hiroshima, and double that of Nagasaki. And that was just one raid. The major Japanese and German cities endured dozens of raids, many massive.
In its absurdity *and* moral imbecility, the faux controversy over the atomic bombings was really the model for all contemporary idiocy of that sort. If the emperor and his key adviser hadn't seized on the bombings as a rationale for surrender - as opposed to a reason for surrender, which from a military perspective they weren't - then Japan would have suffered a true holocaust, with vastly higher numbers of casualties and a much steeper climb to recovery.

Interesting point. I was thinking about that myself. This is kind of natural selection. The people who have children now, will raise kids who have children, so on and so forth. Barring some great catastrophe, one would think they should survive.
On a business trip, all of the guys I met seemed pretty vital and normal (well, except for that one guy.) And the women... I am a sucker for delicate women. Of course, I am also a sucker for firebreathers, so it was a mixed bag.

My family roots identify ancestors fighting America's battles all the way back to the French and Indian wars. We don't view it as 'service' but, rather as a responsibility - an obligation of citizenship. We enlisted - waiting to be 'drafted' was for the few slackers.
For me the issue was never 'if' but when and where: 1960's, Viet Nam. Yes, I came back to insult and ridicule - and simple nods of recognition from the family. I don't feel that I belong to any special 'brotherhood' - not even (especially not even) within my own family.
I don't need to be thanked for my 'service', nor do I need special perks or rewards for simply performing a duty. But, I understand that many feel the need within themselves to offer it. I see no need to reject those offers nor to insult them. They don't - and will never - understand my background and I am not inclined to lecture them.
I have, however, found a way to respond that does not make either of us uncomfortable. When I am thanked my response is "The honor was mine." - and I leave it there.

I was born in 1960, so I watched what they wanted shown about Nam on tv. I watched the ping pong ball lottery, knowing potential draftees. I didn't go to combat in my USAF service. But did have to draw my weapon and aim it with deadly intent, twice. (USAF cop)
Fortunately, in both instances, the miscreant rightly discerned my lethal intentions, and complied with commands.
Wise for them, given that I was on the base rifle & pistol team, and on the list as an alternate for the Air Training Command team. (I was ace on the S&W Model 15, .38 spl. revolver, but *hated* the worn-out M-16 A1 rifles we were issued in those Carter era days.)
And frankly, having served IN the Carter era, IS my tale of military hardship, woe and suffering.
Post Vietnam, and pre-Grenada. Just such low point in all of the services.
In the match of Carter vs. the Rabbit, I was cheering for the Rabbit.

I'm taking all of the comments about the intent of those who show their appreciation and the idea that someone isn't a citizen because they didn't serve is just anti-American in my view as an indicator that the commenter is feeling survivors remorse, missing those who gave all and wishing it were not so and resenting those who are alive.
It happens. It's a common psychological occurrence.
I wish them well but wish they would keep their grief to themselves instead of taking it out on the innocent.

The thin voices of the aged were supported by those of the younger guests and attendants and led by the sweet, clear sounds of the horns and the persistence of the beat from the banjo and Sousa Phone, as is the form of a jazz band.
We closed with Amazing Grace. Everyone looked one year older. It was lovely.

Streaming services like Amazon, Netflix etc are changing the market. Movies are contracted to them to provide to subscribers for a set period of time for a set dollar figure. Which protects both parties actually. Say, Kevin Spacey just had a blockbuster movie which just came out. All of his old stuff would gain a little more value in the next rental period. Instead, it's now going to plummet.
If Band of Brothers had a actor in it who recently gained some acclaim the new rental price might have been higher than previously and Spike may not have wanted to pay the higher number.
It might now be available on Netflix or Amazon. Who know their subscriber base by now ( we watch them, but they're also watching what we watch, too) and are willing to pay the extra bucks for the next year or so.

Winter arrived earlier than some bros at a free kegger on St. Patrick's Day. Since nothing puts a damper on the stupidity better than some unseasonable cold and snow, ERs around town should see less stretcher traffic than is typical for this time of year.
Global Warming shouldn't be welcomed in Chicago....

Maybe, but I think it's a trite phrase, which liberals say to let themselves off the hook. "Hey, I did my part, I thanked him!" I don't know, it just irritates me. Now, a genuine "Thank you", I think, would go a lot further.

I worked in the government in DC and worked with a lot of with vets. If you aren't a vet (and I am not), you don't have the experience (like basic training), and you haven't lived the life. In short, you are not of the brotherhood and vets see most of us non-vets as apart from them.

Probably the chief regret of my life is never having enlisted. I came of age in the early 1980s at a time when college bound kids who did not come from military families simply went to college and registered for Selective Service. I do recall dropping off the registration and, if it means anything in the cosmic scheme of things, do recall being sincere that if my Uncle Sam ever sent me an invitation I would surely go without complaint.
Then post grad school and career and no real question ever being asked of me to serve or not to serve. In that time and place, no one just "interrupted" their education to enlist.
I see it differently now, but that is just the when and were of that place and time, living as a young professional in the Northeast.
One of my fraternity brothers, a real exception, had enlisted in the Marine Corps before his Senior year. Great guy. I eventually found out he became part of the White House honor guard --I don't know what he did around that particular gig.
When the Towers came down I was very conflicted. A very real part of me wanted to simply enlist there and then. Quite seriously. I was also on the cusp of 40, married, trying to start a business and a family, feeling very responsible to dig my wife and I out of a financial hole I had mostly built to that time. So I did what was expected of me, which is to say I simply did nothing except live my life as a civilian.
I have done a lot of things I'm proud of, including raising two very fine boys who are becoming very fine young men. West Point is an option for one of them, though Mom may need more work on that.
Never having served is something that does bother me, though I think of it as a kind of unfortunate circumstance of time and place of birth rather than a personal moral failing. I'm at peace with that distinction.
