The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

At some point I have to stick with the troop, especially the leader. Oh, I might think about flinging poo at him, and sometimes I do, but I also like to eat, and not get eaten by lions, and that's what happens when we don't stick together

Repudiation of a sitting president is par for the course...for the opposition. That the inside-the-beltway Republicans are doing it is an indication of their stupidity and shortsightedness. One of the strengths of the Democrat Party is a ruthless enforcement of the orthodoxy. Any deviation is met with swift correction. That is how Obama was able to push through deeply unpopular measures; his party cracked the whip and tolerated no dissension in the ranks.

But the current mess of a Republican Party is incapable of unity. The tax overhaul is a perfect example. That could have been used by Republican candidates all across the country as a rallying cry for their tickets. Look at us! We are taking care of you,,,the voter! More money in your pockets! But infighting and political expediency and nasty, vitriolic sniping at the president took precedence. Look back at the eight years of a tremendously divisive Obama presidency and you will not find any Democrat resistance to him that approaches what has happened to President Trump, courtesy of the Republican Party, in his first 10 months in office.

The economy is improving, President Trump has returned to a more robust foreign policy that does not accommodate tyrants, the culture war being fought in this country seems to be evening out...the Right has won some battles. That should be a recipe for electoral stability. Not always success, because we can't win everything, but the bedrock of America is ably represented in the White House. It is up to the Republican Party to take advantage of that tremendous opportunity.

I am not Pollyanna. Dissension is a part of any free people. And I want the Republican Party to disagree, if and when necessary, with the president. But they need to do it within the strictures of a winning strategy. And making every disagreement with President Trump part of the news cycle, and making sure it dwarfs his accomplishments is a recipe for failure. We got a small taste of that yesterday. And I don't like it.

But the elites will learn, one way or the other, that subverting the President is a bad idea. If Ryan and McConnell are smart (and I don't think they are) they will adjust their rhetoric and fall in line with the president...in public. Private discussions of their policy differences are fine. In fact they are necessary. But if they don't present a united front to the American people they are going to discover that we do not suffer fools, and 2018 will be ugly.

******

This is retarded on so many levels. Do these people ever read the actual law, or is it some stylized version they read in a tweet from Vox.com?
******

THis is a well-crafted answer, and one that succeeded on all fronts. He slapped down the idiot who asked a domestic policy question at a press conference in another country with another head of state at the other podium. Then he gave an excellent answer to the loaded and inflammatory question.

If this is the trend of his pronouncements then I am optimistic that we have a very capable president.

Posted by: Anon a mouse... at November 08, 2017 11:44 AM (MINbv)

45 I wanted to clarify some points I didn't make well earlier today.

My objection to the eh the Dems won a race they were supposed to win is mainly a matter of tone more than anything. If races that are supposed to be won aren't contested, we would not be on the verge of celebrating the Ascension of the Golden Scalp Weasel. Now, I do get what is being said, I do, it's just something about the formulation of they won the race they were supposed to win so no big deal that strikes me wrong. As I said, it's tone more than anything else.

Also, while I am very much get rid of the RINO scum, I am also cognizant of local realities. I am sick of all elections being national elections and I want very much for all politics to go back to being local, particularly state and local level politics. So I am in the camp of elect the most conservative possible and I do accept that means that sometimes I will barely recognize that person as conservative.

Of course, all of that goes flying out the window because we never ever ever ever seem to get the conservative part of it. See re: Schlichter's article on how loyalty goes both ways.

Lastly, it's been not even a day since the results from last night's elections came in. I'm pretty sure that this may be too soon to determine What Happened. I know, I know, burn the stop doing hot takes witch.

Most importantly, my regingering last night came out great.

instapundit has a link to a nytimes article published one year ago today, election morning, predicting a clinton win with 85% certainty. the article breaks it down by path, state-by-state and 9 different organizations (up to 99% certainty). very scientific and objective.

this does more to express how shocking trump's win was than crying clinton staffers or journalists' tweets. it really was an historic upset, against every poll and analysis, possibly moreso than in any previous election. really makes the point.

highly recommended.

That's disappointing and one of the problems with corporate these days. The whole point of the McDonalds scheme was to have a consistent experience at any one of their stores whether or not it was a franchise. And in the 80s, they were positively maniacal about maintaining those standards. I used to work for The Scotsman back then, and it was a real thing to spot check all stores, McOpCo (corporate owned) and franchises. God help the staff if the report came back with problems.

>>386 Ok, here's a question for the 'rons. when you pee do you adjust your distance from the toilet based on how much you have to pee? Pee like a racehorse = stand further away? Just have to pee a little = get closer to the bowl? Do you get closer in as the stream tapers off? Posted by: Donna and V. (sans ampersands at the present time) at November 08, 2017 11:03 AM (ZM2xo)

I'm tall and get good splatter so I sometimes squat down and piss into the bowl lower so there's less mess

Sometimes I piss against the side of the bowl for the same purpose

At my condo to avoid the mess and make bathroom cleaning easier, I almost always pee sitting down (THERE I ADMIT IT).

I don't know anyone that varies their horizontal distance from the bowl. However, that changes in public restrooms. You have no idea how many guys are dirty pissers or who have 0 idea of proper piss technique and get pee all over the floor. I avoid standing the pee, so sometimes I pee at odd angles or distance from the bowl. If I do that, as the stream tapers off I have to move closer.

If I'm at the urinal, it's a battle of the belt buckle. I won't tolerate being too close to the bowl, but I don't want to be the guy that stands 1 foot away with his hands on his hips. I typically wrangle the belt buckle and other belt end with one hand, then proceed to pee while intently watching to make sure nothing touches the urinal. I also have to make sure not to stand in pee since a lot of guys piss like savages even at urinals.

Proper pee technique is important to me, since I value hygiene. When I enter a restroom, I turn into a Nazi.

His electoral calculus never involved this: "Y'know, these little guys in DC have huge and fragile egos, and if I piss all over them by calling them 'losers' and 'jocks' with relish--and I do manage to win--they're not likely to show me any legislative love."

Sure, this is how we 'got Trump.' But in getting him, we also bought some pretty tough, unforgiving congressional karma.

83 Turnout, turnout, turnout.

A deep dive into the data comparing VA 2017 to VA 2016 will likely show better turnout by those aligned with The Borg (because anti-Trump) and a not-as-good-as-needed turnout by Deplorables because Gillespie was a squish.

When most voters who can vote don't, energizing your base is usually outcome determinative.

103 The GOP is pretty smug about losing to the Dems, but a fee points:

1) The President has made extraordinary progress in foreign relations, commendable headway against bureaucracy, and little progress on major legislation.

Basically, the more input Congress has, the more ineffective the politics.

2) Knowing this, the vast majority of Republicans support thr President more than Congress. If they were to all drop dead tomorrow we would be pleased as pie.

3) President Trump has successfully fought the NFL, Hillary Clinton, and the entire globalist enterprise. Liberal friends of the Bushbots were calling for him to face war crimes trials eight years ago.

Point is... if this keeps up, you are betting your lives that the American people will back Congress over the President.

My understanding is the property tax deduction is still there but capped.

I do agree that politically, it's stupid for anyone that pays taxes, to pay more in taxes under a Republican tax plan.

I'll probably get hit with this also, and I live in a relatively low property tax state.

Why not just do an across the board cut of rates, cut the corporate rate, eliminate Estate tax and put a win on the board?

If there's Republican voters that end up paying more in taxes under the plan, it's not going to play well.

People on this site constantly talk about Bush not defending himself, or McCain and Romney doing the same during their presidential bids. Now PDT defends himself and there are people clutching their pearls.
I'm tired of the dems and the media constantly assaulting the conservatives and the people they choose to represent them in government. Something needs to be done about it. I'm not an advocate for violence. If PDT wants to take them on verbally, I'm all for it.
I'm constantly hearing that PDT isn't presedential enough. Presidential my ass. Barack Obama may have looked and sounded presidential but he did more to harm this country then even Jimmy Carter. Race relations being the hardest hit.

I'm still looking for a logical piece of evidence that says by fully embracing Trump in the only southern state Trump lost just a year ago and one that is increasingly turning blue and infested with DC swamp creatures when Trump ran on a platform of kicking them out of their jobs would have turned the tide.

instapundit has a link to a nytimes article published one year ago today, election morning, predicting a clinton win with 85% certainty. the article breaks it down by path, state-by-state and 9 different organizations (up to 99% certainty). very scientific and objective.

this does more to express how shocking trump's win was than crying clinton staffers or journalists' tweets. it really was an historic upset, against every poll and analysis, possibly moreso than in any previous election. really makes the point.

But I think the writer was trying to make some kind of big sucker punch statement.

Consider: Starlord the freebooting young guy following his whims meets his father finally. Dad wants him to settle down and become part of the family "business." He is full of values and traditions about the family, and is very persuasive about how this system works and Starlord is now willing to join the family and stop his roaming ways.

But wait! Old man dad with the family values turns out to have built it all on a pile of bones! He's murdered hundreds, perhaps thousands in his effort to build a home!

It just feels like some kind of establishment tradition old vs young and free and wild! thing. Especially with the "Father and Son" song played at the end.

I know Bob Marshall, he has served an adjoining district for quite a while.

He has not been quite right in the head since a couple weeks before his first election, when his son was killed in an accident. It was devastating to him, but he went on to win.

He started out as a solid fiscal/social conservative who was also a likeable guy, willing to discuss with people and mannered in policy disagreement.

He deteriorated into something of a caricature of social conservatism, who was reliably elected with a strong base who liked voting up god and down gays.

In reality he was a guy who stood for "no". he often came into our county and assisted dems on some issues, because voting "no" to roads, etc for environmental reasons was on his list--some of the things he did in our county bordered on illegal, but squeaked by, They were certainly unethical, and against elected Rs.

He was ALWAYS reelected, and the people they used to run against him were the kind of candidate that you run just to get a baseline, usually with some outré fillip: gay fireman, now trans thrash metal woman.

I thought transwoman was another baseline.

She whomped him, and she doesn't have to do squat for her entire term--she's already done her job just by getting elected.

I have a friend over in 'jersey with solar panels. He has to monitor his generation for maximum return. If he returns too much to the grid he gets less money. But he has a slew of them across both his house and garage.

But he doesn't have a wife and children using electricity all day long. So that's part of the equation.

I'm not a solar 'denier'. It has a place, but it's not for everyone. I had solar panels to warm pool water on a former house. They worked well. But time and elements are tough on anything outside 24/7/365.

Well that's what the movie effectively says but consider: he rejects (and kills) the old man who was actually family to join his roaming band of freaky deakies like a hippie commune instead.

I'm not saying dad was a good guy: clearly the writer meant for him to be evil. I just suspect the writer meant for it to be an anti-past, anti-family tract, with inclusive diversity "family" being the real family rather than the blood one. I mean, consider the other blood family relationship in the movie: Nebula and Gamorra.

It didn't work out that way in practice, instead you got a lesson on fighting evil at any cost and protecting children, but I don't think that's what the writer meant it to be. I mean the first movie was basically anti-religion as well.

I mean, obviously there are a lot of other issues, but in the end it's two pretty common tropes -

1. Revenge. Maybe the most common trope in classic drama/tragedy? You killed mom, prepare to die.

2. Someone realizes that a close, beloved non-blood related person is their true "family," not their blood relative that abandoned them/mistreated them.

301 Not necessarily true. Here in SoCal our house is a net contributor to the grid. Our electricity bill is negative. /i]

I know, I was exaggerating. I like solar, a lot. I think its a neat idea to take all that gigantic radiant energy from the sun and turn it into power for your home. Its just only viable in some very few areas and with the cost of installation, maintainance, and replacement I'm not convinced there's any real net savings over time.

Its like electric cars. I like electric cars as a concept. But they cost so much and the replacement batteries after 6-10 years are such a huge financial burden, in the end you're saving money by driving even a moderately efficient gas car. And you cant put an objective cost on limited range and downtime, really.

We're just not there with alternate energy. We may never be.

CBD's, and others', focus on rhetoric and atmospherics and personalities here, I think, is completely misplaced (talking about GOP/Trump level issues).

Action. Results. That's what motivated people to vote for Trump. They may love/hate/be unaware of the Twitter stuff.

None of that will matter if he gets results on his core policy areas. This is where the GOP is a disaster - not uniformly, but on balance, at this point.

I can't say, but I can only hope, that the most absurd examples of GOPers joining the lynch mob of race-baiting, ignorance, and hallucinogenic demagoguery - like after C'ville, or in select cases like Flake et al with their baseless and slimy racist slanders - aren't really a factor here. They're despicable, and bizarre, but not material to election results, yesterday or in the near future. At least seems to me.

Yeah I don't insist on it, just a feeling I get. The number of movies that don't seem to want to kick me in the ideological mangerines are few and far between. After a while you get kind of sensitive.

Even that Mindhunter show, set in the 1970s, had to have someone give a strident defense of transexuals: that doesn't mean they're wrong or bad, just because this crazed lunatic that murdered and tortured women was one! That doesn't mean transexuals have to be psychopathic serial killers!

No, you're right, it doesn't mean that. But you didn't insist on pointing that out for any other characteristic of these monsters. One was married, did you feel compelled to defend marriage? One really likes feet, was there some impassioned defense of foot fetishism? It was obnoxious and so transparently modern protection against outrage.

Instead of R's in the district thinking "I'm sick and tired of all this bickering, and nothing's getting done. I agree the Congress needs to get in line, especially the Senate (which only a naif would argue is Republican). Certainly, I also agree Trump and a bunch of yesterdays news characters (like Corker) get into unproductive sniping matches. But I'd argue its understandable the President would lose his thin patience, given the absolute absence of party disciple and zero effective leadership from McConnell.

Only a tortured partisan analysis of elections last night calls the results a repudiation of what Trump is himself seeking to accomplish. Trump was not on the ballot and Gillespie repudiated much of Trumps platform anyway.

The lesson to be drawn (if its possible for the GOPe to learn any lessons) is that something different from the Bush era politics is happening, that change is underway and change is rough and hard. But the voters demand it be done, even Democrat Bernie-bot voters want a freer more opensystem.

346 Supposedly you can get around 30 years out of a solar panel, assuming no extreme weather (heavy winds, ice storms, golf ball-sized hail) with minimal cleaning like hosing off leaves. So they have a decent lifespan. Still, at their cost, you're probably never going to pay it off even at 30 years.

Electric cars are an even worse investment. They cost tens of thousands more than a gas car, plus the cost of electricity. Plus the battery replacement. Its just never, ever, ever going to pay for its self. I can't help but laugh in the face of people who think they are saving money.

A cheap electric car as a second town car for going to work and back: sure. Bring the cost down under $15 grand and we're talking. But as is, its like pouring money into the Weber and lighting it up.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at November 08, 2017 12:50 PM (39g3+)

347 Here in Bucks County, PA, there are two county offices that make sense from a partisan POV (District Attorney and Sheriff), and three less so (Recorder of Deeds, Controller, and Prothonotary). GOP held all five going in, and incumbents were running again in all but Prothonotary.
Dems took four of the five, defeating three incumbents, and taking the Prothonotary tossup. Only GOP to hold on was DA.

Party holding Presidency typically loses seats in first off-year Congressional election, but these results tell me 2018 will be a catastrophe if GOP doesn't get their act together.

348 Mitch McConnell needs to announce office reassignment, committee reassignment and travel audits, to occur right after the vote on the House tax reform bill. That would help.

Send Lisa Murkowski to an office in Rockville, and she can experience traffic on the Rockville Pike while trying to make votes. John McVain can submit his office accounts going back ten years or so for a proctology exam.

The Senate isn't used to annoyances. Annoy them.

351 Democrats stick together because that is the foundation of their party: a mass of special interests, each vowing to help the other in return for support in return.

Republicans, on the other hand, are ideological: individual liberty and stuff like that . . . So, not too much of a surprise when they can't agree on the details - there's no back-scratching.

Again I'll say: VA wasn't a blue state turning purple. It's a purple state about to turn solidly blue, like NY and CA.

The northern 'burbs will turn out en masse against anyone even talking about threatening their livelihood, as Trump has.

A lot of the blame belongs to Gillespie, being a shitty candidate, but we're also seeing part of the realignment of America here. Unfortunately, it's not gonna all go our way.

Northram was actually a pretty decent candidate. Former vet and neurosurgeon. So Northram winning a blueish purple state that Trump lost is not surprising.

It's the shelacking across the state even in the red areas that has me concerned.

Yeah, that's the one thing no one on either side has pointed out. Northam was a perfect candidate for this year: native Virginian (not NOVA either,) VMI grad, veteran, pediatrician. His public demeanor is mild. He faced an openly hardleft commie in the primary, which made him seem moderate. And at least 80% of his ads showed him in a white coat cuddling babies.

This was the perfect face for the party in that he inspired no visceral fear. The GOPe-red districts that the Dems wisely targeted, the ones that rejected Trump in 2016, would find him agreeable enough. They certainly weren't going to rush out in droves to defeat him. And in the meantime the Dems whipped up fear and loathing to get their own voters out.

If Tom Perriello had won the nomination, the GOP might have successfully whipped up the vote against him--- and more importantly, against his party.

(As far as I can see, no district that went for Trump went for Northam. So the hard-red held. It was the GOPe-red that switched.)

357 Gillespie ran on repealing Obamacare, cutting taxes,
balancing the budget, enforcing immigration laws and the rest of the
Republican platform. So what't the problem?

Posted by: JackStraw at November 08, 2017 12:26 PM (/tuJf)

That is NOT what Gillespie ran on. Nowhere on his healthcare page does it mention repeal of Obamacare. And Gillespie NEVER mentioned enforcing immigration laws except for his reluctant attack on Northam's sanctuary cities vote. Gillespie has been and always will be an open borders squish... nobody would have believed him had he bothered to lie about that.

361 Gillespie went against Northam on the statue issues
and exit polling is showing the people were with him. It also shows that
the big Northam vote was in federal employees and non-white voters.

If you think running a "Trump style campaign" whatever that means would have changed this then ok. I don't.

Posted by: JackStraw at November 08, 2017 12:52 PM (/tuJf)

Gillespie did not go against Northam on the statue issue in any meaningful way. Additionally, his statement on the issue was insulting in the extreme to Virginians who value their heritage.

363 It's funny when people talk about Trump like some talk about fiances.

"I going to marry him/her so I can turn her/him into the man/woman I know s/he can be!"

Good luck with that one.

364 Our VA contingent here, and the exit polling, seem to agree and confirm the particular vs. the national significance of this.

And just to pick one lightning rod issue that did arise in the campaign - illegal migration - what were the major events? Dem was defensive on his sanctuary cities record, not defiant, and outrageous racist demagogic ad was a controversy for his campaign, moving him to lie about his involvement, and ad to be pulled

For some reason very few politically aware people seem to have actually paid attention to Obama's 2008 campaign - to the extent there really was one - and his "positions". His positions and tone were close to a liberal Republican, on many big issues. Ridiculous, of course, but true. As some VA people have pointed out, neither Northam's persona nor positions were very radical. Trying to find national anti-Trump tea leaves in this cup seems to be a pretty ridiculous exercise.

365 Just my $0.02, but a republican "tax plan" doesn't even move the needle for me. It's all just tinkering at the margins, and at the end of the day neither party has the balls to do what needs to be done which is - wait for it - start taxing the bottom 3 quintiles of income earners who have basically had a free ride (the bottom 5th actually getting PAID from filing) for two decades. The only tax reform I care about is one that has EVERYBODY paying, and nobody working more than 1 day a week to pay for the federal government EXCEPT the ultra rich who are all social progressives anyway so screw 'em.

What would motivate voters isnt a tax plan, but rather a GOP that lays out a clear set of reforms (as Trump has) and then actually makes a REAL effort to deliver on them, and that means putting the likes of Sue Collins' & Lindsey Graham, and Cornyn and McCain to the absolute screws if necessary. The GOP has serially betrayed its voters for four elections cycles in a row now, and they've only gotten bolder in doing so. The Dems are going to win back - probably - both houses of Congress in 2018, but in doing so they will profoundly misunderstand why.

Posted by: Cannibal Bob at November 08, 2017 01:34 PM (VezBU)

367 Sam in VA is right about the substance of the issue. The tax system is a disaster, and could/should be replaced by a de minimis, simplified one that reintroduces a large portion of the lower 60% of the income distribution to federal income taxes. The utter political infeasibility of this obviously needed reform is the largest shining monument to America's political failure (elites and electorate) to achieve its potential.

368 I'm a long term outlook guy. It's what I do. So context for me is lifespan of my children and grandchildren and that of my fellow Americans.

America is projected to have a 300% population increase over just the next 82'ish years to 1 Beeeleeyun people (1 Billion).

I run an environmental engineering/geology company in CA and can promise you that there is no f'n way we can build the necessary infrastructure (water, sewage, power, food growth/distribution, transportation, jobs, etc. to the 10th power) to accommodate 1 billion people.

Oh, and the hyper-population growth is 97% caused by the de facto immigration policies of the Democrat-Republican Establishment.

Population math is frightening stuff. I don't think they teach much about it anymore in biology or political-science because it's too scary.

Bottom line: Our democratic-republic cannot possibly survive such rapid population growth that will be marked by an overwhelming number of unassimilated multicultural crazies demanding Big.Gov give them everything they want and self-hating leftist actual-Americans bending over for them.

Doom. Real doom.

370 "We have a ton of never-trump/"this is not who we are" elite GOPers, and I've been hankering to start asking them "who is we?"

And I'm starting to want to smack some of them.

I think we have some poisonous identity politics going on that has ZERO to do with race, sex, gender, etc, and a great deal to do with display/preening of a different kind.
Posted by: barbarausa at November 08, 2017 11:58 AM (ru28e)"

This is what burns my biscuits about this. Sure, there are a handful of NeverTrumpers who actually are principled and stayed home or wrote in their dream candidate. These are typically the guys who have been trying to push the GOPe to stop being Diet Democrats, and these are the only ones I am ever going to take seriously. But the rest of you clowns...

Look. You snowflakes have been hand-wringing and moaning for close to 10 years how "this isn't the hill to die on" whenever something actually important came up. You are the losers who have been telling the base that their principles have to be sacrificed on the altar of "winning". You were the idiots who shoved shit sandwiches down everyone's throats and told us that we *must* vote for your shit sandwich because otherwise "THE DEMOCRATS WILL WIIIIIIIIIIIN!!!!1!1!"

And now suddenly YOU are the ones bleating about "muh principles"? Suddenly, YOU are the ones too good to eat a shit sandwich? Now, the very Democrats you used to scare the base with aren't *really* so bad, or you know, you don't want your turn at making the same sacrifices you insisted everyone else make for The Party?

No, just...no. Fuck you and everyone near you. That ship has sailed without you. You had your chance to act on your principles for a DECADE and you blew it. TIME AND TIME AGAIN. It's too late to virtue signal how "principled" you are now, how you're the "real conservative" even though nothing about your "principles" has anything to do with conservatism at all. Protip kids: don't dish it out if you can't take it. Don't insist actual conservatives vote for your squish if you can't likewise hold your nose when there's a candidate who offends your delicate sensibilities. Either deal with it like a grown-up when it's your turn, or sit down and have yourself a big bowl of Shut The Fuck Up.

371 You always Trumpers are living in you own world. Don't tell me the GOP lost the Virginia House of Delegates because of Gillepsie. They lost it because of Trump. The anger of the Democrats was so strong they turned out and voted straight party for every office, when some of them in the past might have voted for a Republican representative. They wanted to send a message.

They acted like Republicans did to Obama in 2010 and 2014.

Posted by: Arkansas Yankee at November 08, 2017 05:25 PM (m/1QV)

372 I'm not even a Trump fan, I only did the usual thing the squishes insist on and help my nose because I'm NeverHillary. I just call out idiocy when I see it, and most NeverTrumpers don't actually have any principles other than "I want to sit at the cool kids' table! Please don't call me a racist! *wibblewibble*" For every Jim Treacher (an actual principled NeverTrumper) who has always been fighting to push back against GOPe being the "kinder gentler Democrat Party" and dislikes Trump as an urban liberal (and he is) there's a dozen codpiece-sniffers like Kristol who just want their Democrat sempais to notice them. I listen and consider what Treacher says, primarily because he was never the one to shove a shit sandwich down my throat as long as it was *his* shit sadwich. (In fact, he was usually among the first to complain about shit sandwiches)

The lesson, because you apparently missed it the first time: don't deal out shit sandwiches if you think you're above eating one yourself. If you can't learn that and you want to keep pretending your principles are the only ones that matter, you are cordially invited to DIAF.
