Naked Man back view.jpg

Naked Man, Back View
Lucian Freud

I have posted a Commenters Bill Of Rights below the fold. It is from another blog, written by a smart guy, who also knows this blog and its peculiar habits quite well. Some of it applies perfectly...some of it less so.

The catalyst is the unmistakeable downturn in the comments. Ad hominem attacks are becoming the norm, and they shouldn't. Cliquish, exclusionary behavior is becoming commonplace, and it shouldn't. Slavish adherence to memes over substance is sometimes overwhelming the threads.

"Smart but very, very vulgar" was accurate once, and we should be proud of that description. Perhaps we shouldn't rush to devolve to simply, "very, very vulgar."

Commenters Bill Of Rights

  • You have the right to comment – for as long as the owner of the blog feels like granting it to you.
  • You have the right to be banned at any time, for any reason, real or imagined and for any period of time from minutes to years.
  • You have the right to have your comment deleted for any reason without any explanation.
  • You have the right to point out someone’s poor argument. You do not, in turn, have the right to be offended when someone does it to you.
  • You have the right to have an opinion – you do not have the right to demand that everyone value your opinion or even care about your opinion.
  • You have the right not to take anyone’s opinion seriously – you do not have the right to demand that someone take YOU seriously.
  • You have the right to sarcasm as form of “argument” as long as you understand that sarcasm conveys absolutely no truth and no fact.
  • You have the right to an explanation for being banned. That explanation may or may not come before you are banned.
  • You have the right to be civil.
  • You have the right to be a bigot – just not on this blog.
  • You have the right to be free of purely ad hominem attacks.

Shorter Commenters Bill of Rights:

Don’t be a dick.

The Univision anchor admitting he's a partisan dunce was the best part. 70 Hauling this in from the thread below:

I'm gonna risk being willowed and reply to Alex's statement about the mentally ill here late in the thread:

Yah, we need to do something about the mentally ill, but: part of the whole problem is that the press doesn't want to talk about the problems with certain types of psychotropic medicines making various disorders worse, even when it comes to violent crime. I used to try to keep track of this stuff, fifteen to twenty years ago, but over the years I had to give up. A good starting point is the recent blog/facebook post John Ringo wrote on the subject, although he didn't mention the Big One in his various examples: SSRI's inducing mania and rapid cycling in patients with bipolar disorder.
Posted by: Thing From Snowy Mountain at November 06, 2017 09:29 AM (3/HOt)

Yup. My father is bipolar and the meds have been a Godsend but it took a good while to get the right balance figured out.

When I mentioned the government not being able to force medication on people, my mind went immediately to all the parents, probably 90+% of them the parents of boys, who are told their adolescent or even pre-adolescent must be given ADHD medication or the child cannot come to school.

We are conducting a large scale experiment on the provision of mind altering medications to children and that does not sit right with me in the slightest. That you must do it or be investigated for neglect makes it worse.

I can't even discuss the topic of hormone puberty blockers because, as someone whose thyroid went yeah, I'm out, when I was about 12 years old and who thus had her body more or less block puberty all on its own, I'm here to tell you that it causes all kinds of consequences that don't become apparent for years and years. That people do this on purpose? To pre-adolescents and young adolescents? *inarticulate screeching*

It's frustrating because I feel like I do have personal experience to bring to that topic but at the same time that personal experience makes it impossible for me to have any kind of intellectual distance from it so I tend to keep my mouth shut because I like my positions to be from a place of intelligence, not emotions.

79 ICYMI, from Muldoon this past Saturday.

241 Just a quick one:

My wife told me I ought to look in and maybe clarify some things.

My abrupt departure was not ultimately because of Hammer's or Mouse's comments, rather an accumulation of outside factors unrelated to the blog, and a re-prioritization in my real life. I hold no animosity toward anybody in general and those two in particular. Doesn't really have anything to do with my F-I-L's murder either. Sometimes life just catches up with you. My life overall is good, many have it tougher than Missus Muldoon and I do, it just wears me out sometimes. The other night my usual even temper and good nature succumbed to a larger weariness (both physical and mental).

I will say that the general tenor of the blog in recent months has shifted. I'm not sure what direction the blog is going, time will tell. For my part, I am merely taking some time to get a handle on my weariness. I am not flouncing, I am not insane, I am not suicidal, I'm just tired and am stepping away for a time.

Best wishes!

Endeavor to persevere.

I guess I have missed most of the acrimony or am just too antisocial and stupid to recognize when I see it. I know we have our spats but, excepting trolls and a few other instances, I haven't seen much. Maybe that is because I'm a lover, not a fighter, so when things go south I bail and enter meat space, however unpleasant meat space may be.

Thank you everyone who has already bought the novella. Hope you enjoyes it as much as Skandia Recluse has. Though I never intended to write an Archie comic with words, I just geek'd out and had some fun.

I think these two sentences encomlass the problem. There is a clear need for mind altering meds and a clear need for child protection because mental illness is a real thing and child abuse is a real thing. But once you admit that the issues become how much is enough and how is too much? These days, I think were were leaning on the too much side on bkth child protection and drugs.

The reflexive treatment of normal childhood behavior with powerful drugs is a national disgrace. You will get no argument here.

The issue of psychotropic drugs is more complex. Large majorites of psychiatric patients are helped by these drugs. I think the problem lies with the assumption that they can replace lifelong psychiatric care.

Seriously, though, this is where the rubber meets the road. I'm not sure how 1% of the market craters, exactly, but, for private owners/buyers, a $40K Chevy Bolt that requires an additional $2K fast charger vs a $25K Accord you can drive anywhere immediately... Hmm, let me think.

Imagine what would happen if legislation forcing the sale of X% of electric vehicles were removed.

199 Fat guy on a little ottoman... *hopes a Moron gets the reference*

The grotesque painting of a bulbous man reminds me...just finished watching The Crown and loved the Assasin episode. I pride myself on my art history knowledge, but had never heard of Graham Sutherland before! Or the debacle of him painting Churchill's portrait. Best ep of the series.

I looked up the Churchill portrait out of curiosity, to see if any images of it exist. Just my opinion, but it IS ugly! Can see why Churchill and his wife wanted it burned. I have no problem showing a man at his proper age, I just dislike the artist's style. Checked out his other work and it leaves me cold too. The show described the painting as a"lost masterpiece"... might be the first painting ever in my life I'm indifferent to being lost.

But the beauty of art is that someone else can see that portrait, or the ugly painting above, and think it beautiful. I will love artists like Chagall till I die and some hate his work. Yay subjectivity!

I am also sick to death of the left instantly taking to social media whenever there is a red state natural disaster or gun rampage to snark that they deserve it because Trump voters, knowing full well that if anything like that happened in their blue hellholes, they'd demand nothing but unquestioned sympathy and federal money.

I'm also cranky because my arm still hurts like an SOB and because I've lost 20 pounds in the last 5 months with no idea what is happening to me.

247 AtC, I wouldn't worry overmuch about being too close to a subject. The people most affected are the people who have reason to be involved. Especially if it is icky and ugly, and people want to look away.
Even better, you understand that you are emotionally involved and are working to offset that.

The mandatory treatment of ADHD would be useful if the districts didn't have a financial interest in the diagnosis of children with ADHD.
If a doctor or a counselor or a school district has a pecuniary interest in positive diagnosis of something, it will be found whether it exists or not.

Also, ADHD is treated generally by prescribing pharmaceutical grade Methamphetamines. Stimulants tend to make active kids fall asleep. Small doses make them dozy.
I worry this acts to addict the brain at early ages.

I bl that the only way to rid ourselves of Sessions is to inform him how much the American public wants him gone. The Senate will never let Sessions be replaced if fired and the only way to rein in Mueller is through a new AG. W Sessions gone, a new AG could limit the rules of the SC investigation to strict timeframe, limited avenues of pursuit and a deadline. And, be done w it.

277 The mandatory treatment of ADHD would be useful if the districts didn't
have a financial interest in the diagnosis of children with ADHD. If
a doctor or a counselor or a school district has a pecuniary interest
in positive diagnosis of something, it will be found whether it exists
or not.

Have to do something with all those 'special' education majors and justify 'staffing' bureaucrats to run them. Wealthier districts have over 25% 'special' IEPs.

This guy ... atheist, nut, personal hate inspired by jilted lovers, but why the atheist hate for Christians ... is their antifa or political connection?

Antifa has been seemingly instructed not to kill, just punch and destroy property. But what brings the psychos out of the woodwork? Rand Paul neighbor, for instance. Or Dylann Roof, and the Charlottesville driver ... more KKK types hyped into "race war". A sort of national psychotic break away from our "founding center".

A lot of the perceived attitude here is an outcropping of the constant attack on all things conservative, I believe.

Stepping back is fine--perhaps a good look at the events this Veteran's Day would dispel some of the doom gloom and pearl clutching seen lately.

One could then observe what our country IS, under the filth laid over it by the left.

You might be surprised at just how exceptional we still are.

If you comment expecting a response (here or pretty much anywhere) you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Getting a response from the Horde is an ACHIEVEMENT.

I am a semi-regular myself (I travel a lot, my hash changes and oh by the way I like this one, I am visiting my sister and her family right now and I wanna keep this one) plus I do not post consistently.

Keeping up with the memes here is not easy, but the memes are part of what keeps the Horde together. You can usually convince somebody to explain the joke if you missed its advent and can not figure it out on your own, but I can see how the Moron Meme Mess is part of the hurdle that newbies have to get over in order to be comfortable here.

360 I am wondering whether Donna Brazile is punking us.

I mean, she actually wrote that she was afraid - as the head of the DNC - that she was going to be killed. And that the murder of Seth Rich haunted her.

I wonder if Brazile just wants to sell some books. No one is going to pay for a "What Happened" style book because there is no slavish devotion to Brazile. So maybe she says some things to get non Dems to buy the book. And she has this already worked out with the Clintons so, you know, they DON'T KILL HER.

And then when the world says even Donna Brazile was afraid of Arkancide, she goes, "YOU BEEN PUNKED!!" And there is nothing to it, I made it all up, I just wanted to see how many normals I could catch in the conspiracy nutter net!

willow-

The front door on my old house was varnished and sealed. It faced the east and was only about 100 yards from the ocean so it got a lot of exposure to some harsh conditions including nor'easters and big temperature swings.

It held up as well as the paint on the clapboards that surrounded it, maybe a little better.

I'm heading to the boat shop in a while and I will check with one of the painters for a recommendation on a good sealer. They paint a lot of boats and some have a lot of wood. I'll let you know.

There's a big difference to not responding to a comment (which can happen for dozens of reasons that are not bad whatsoever) and being openly hostile and exclusionary. I lost 20 lbs last year very quickly. Now mine was stress related due to my marriage falling apart, but it had as much to do with I was trying to get everything in life quickly back in order and a lot of the time I would just forget to eat. Also, I lost a crap ton a muscle mass because I wasn't doing anything physically exerting because I was too tired of course a lot of that was due to not eating.

People at the health club that knew my father and I asked him privately if I was sick with cancer...that's how dramatic the weight loss was.

This is random, but are you shitting regularly?

It took me 3 months to stop and then turn around the weight loss and start going back up the right way. Actually started eating smaller amounts more often each day.

I knew I was getting better when I was shitting regularly and healthily again.

Just my thoughts.

first report was he went in his house to get the gun ... not sure where the shooting occurred exactly. But then he flagged down the driver (who didn't know him) and the good citizen driver quickly ascertained the situation.

Armed Citizenry perhaps interrupted this mass murder, AND perhaps stopped the next one, since the madman had guns and explosives in his car. THAT is why the left is going so nuts over the "need more people to carry in church" meme.

But having to watch every comment is wearing and there are some virtue signallers even here and I tune out of that thread usually because you never know wats going to annoy them IMHO. The reason i respond to only certain commenters is becuse I believe hey know I'm kidding and I like when they tease me back. (My favorite part).

That said Theres an ebb and flow to commenters here and the group changes. Sometimes yo feel more at home Han others. I've had two other nicks since I've been coming here for oohhh a dozen years I guess. I've been called a shitweasle and a troll. Heidi still calls me a shitweasle after we laughed about it.

If you really want to be here. find commenters you like bantering with. Not everyone will be your friend. Kinda like real life. Dont have a thin skin and if you don't like a threads tone go do something else. But come back. It'll change.

IMHO.

Whoever is advising Melania on dress and protocol and messaging is incredibly brilliant, although some of the choices may also be her own intention. She was dressed in a beautiful blue understated dress with a cape in the back, and had her hair up in a chignon , which looked very respectful for the occasion with the Japanese family members who are still grieving for their family members that the Japanese govt. can't get returned. It was a nod to the culture, something she has done extremely well at all of her foreign travels without looking like she is in costume.

529 A Chuck Norris meme will sit somewhere between "tough" and "dangerous".

Cool Facts About Dick Cheney is three things, "indifferent", "mean", and "tough". A little more difficult.

If you want to parse a Brian Dennehy meme, it's more complicated than it looks. It's not a fat joke at all. The person making it is slightly unsure that he told the right joke. That's what makes it great.

Jordan Peterson will tell you, ask a kid the rules of any game or sport that he plays a lot of, and he won't be able to explain it well. It's not codified.

I tried to join in, but this place is not really newbie friendly. I can't think of anyone who joined since Hot Air blew up that really has become a regular. Nobody really welcomed my posts, so I just stopped posting for the most part.

I still occassionally comment, but it's the same thing: very, very seldom do people reply or acknowledge. It's like poor kdabear's daily compliance pics in the ONT: no one ever responds to them, so why does he do it? They aren't appreciated.
Posted by: Vanceone at November 06, 2017 10:24 AM (A9Gmy)

I concur. I used to read the comments as they we generally smart or at least witty. Noticed a general trend downward and generally don't read them anymore. Just the blog content. Found the commenting clique to be difficult to break into. The couple of flame wars I read just made me want to eliminate this particular ugly from my life. FWIW.

Webb was a danger to Hillary because he could have grabbed 5 to 10% or more of the vote and shown how weak she was with Reagan Democrats, especially in the Midwest.

Does any one doubt that he was pushed out?

Hillary wanted a coronation and almost got it.

The biggest thing was Obama putting Biden on ice until Hillary got past that Congressional hearing. Biden was forced to publicly bow out the next day. Biden wanted to run, until Obama told him "it's not your night" and he got his one-way ticket to Palookaville, PA.

Biden could have beaten Trump.

Boobs
Ask a rhetorical question

Posted by: Brother Cavil, Abbot of St. Costello-on-the-Hurlingbone at November 06, 2017 09:41 AM (AM1GF)

I was there. Muldoon made a pun; a funny one. Two regulars, both of whom I respect, made jocular comments about murdering him, or burning down his house, which is pretty standard fare for responding to a pun, both here and elsewhere. Clearly jocular comments, I might add.

Now that evening happened to be the anniversary of Muldoon's father in law having been murdered in a yet-unsolved crime, and with that tragedy weighing on his heart, Muldoon chose to see the darkness of the comments, and not the humor, and the actual appreciation of the pun, which led to them, and he gave himself a time out.

Best I can make of it.

633 When comment threads commonly run 500 or more then it becomes harder to have conversations as what is said by anyone gets quickly buried 50 comments back. This is not a criticism, it just happens and I've seen several types of attempts to make it better but all have their own problems too.

For myself I just write if the mood strikes me and I have the time. Sometimes I'll read every comment but doing so leaves no time to comment myself before another thread goes up. I get willowed a lot (this will likely be one too). I write for my own reasons and if someone reads it and likes or dislikes what I say, that's just an extra. Writing is its own reward.

---
The barrel is metaphorical punishment for commenting errors like open italics tags, copypasting a comment from Word, or accidentally copypasting the entire thread.

AoS style guide doesn't formally exist, but is a collection of reminders of old euphemisms and phrasings, frequently brought up ironically (for example referring to Rick Wilson as 'friend of the blog' Rick Wilson which started after a coblog's heavily critical post regarding Wilson got disappeared, but these days comes up because Rick Wilson has fallen out of favor).

Often these are done to poke fun at ace, which can be fun on days he's in a good mood, or more fun and banworthy on days he is not.

I mean even against the most unlikable, corrupt candidate in my lifetime, Trump lost the popular vote and won a handful of Rust Belt states only by like 1%.

It's still impressive, especially considering how little money Trump spent in the race because donors sat on their hands, but Biden would have out performed Hillary by at least 1%.

I do think though Trump will be FAR stronger for his reelection bid. Presidents get reelected like 80% of the time and the Democrat primary will be an expensive bloodbath.

648 If mental health is the topic today, I'll mention what I'm going through with my 93 year old mother. My mother has always been a difficult person and, in particular, dislikes both of my sisters' husbands. (As far as I know, she doesn't dislike Mrs. Wrecks although she hates her mother.) Forty years ago, my younger sister broke off an engagement to her fiance and took up with an older, divorced man with kids. She eventually married him and they remained happily married for thirty plus years until his death. My mother refused to meet him for ten years and eventually met him only because he and my sister forced him on her. He was not a bad guy (although a definite atheist leftist).

My mother is definitely failing physically and mentally. She is obsessed with her belief that that this son in law has ruined her life and our family because of some lies that may or may not have been told 40 years ago during the ending of the engagement and, regardless, were not told to her. A couple of weeks ago, she called my older sister and me (younger sister is not local) over to discuss something important. The important thing is that it has been revealed to her that younger sister's husband was (or is) Satan himself. That's why his acts from 40 years ago an continue to ruin her life even though his physical manifestation has now been dead for years.

Yes, she's gone full Church Lady.

Ever look at the "views" versus "replies" at sites that put those stats up for the public to see? (example: The Hoffman Forums music discussion site.) The "views" will be in the hundreds before there's a half-dozen replies, generally.

It's good to remember that the world does not wait with bated breath for every utterance a 'ron makes.

Not so sure. Hell, I'm not convinced Biden would have beaten Bernie in the primaries.

The media loves to focus on the fracturing of the right but they almost totally ignore how far left the base of the Democrat Party has gone. It's not obvious that Hillary had to cheat a lot to beat Bernie and she was a lot closer to Dem royalty than Biden ever was.

Biden has been in a couple Presidential primaries and got smoked badly in both of them. His crazy uncle shit plays well with the adoring media but I'm not convinced he would play all that well nationally, particularly with the leftward drift of today's Democrat Party.

I think we can agree Hillary is about as unlikable as they come, could anyone go lower? Biden is a jackass, but Trump has a lot of those same qualities, so I could see it being neutralized.

I don't think Biden is a strong candidate, but he just didn't have the same weaknesses Hillary did.

We dodged a bullet. My big fear when Hillary collapsed was they were going to swap her out.

786 >>If he had started out, there's little reason to doubt that the DNC would have been subverted for his needs instead of hers.

Maybe. But the Clinton's have been deeply involved with the DNC and big money from the left for years. I don't think anyone had quite the power they did to manipulate the process.

I don't think it's a big coincidence that while Obama was personally very popular on the left and even to some extent in the middle his policies were not. The Dems lost over 1000 state and federal offices under his policies.

The left has become a coastal and urban Party and they do not relate well to middle class anymore. I think their problems go much deeper than Hillary or any other mainstream left candidate. They really are a very radical Party these days and losing popularity by the day.
