North Korea's Underground Test Site Collapses, Killing 200

Some good news.

Remember after that last nuclear test in September, the one which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, there was a secondary earthquake about 8 minutes later. Experts suggested that was the result of an underground collapse following the blast. The mountain under which North Korea had set off the 100 kiloton nuke was literally falling apart.

Today, Japanese media is reporting that there was another big collapse earlier this month, with a tunnel under the mountain caving in and killing 100 workers. Another 100 workers were sent in to get them and they were killed by another collapse.

This is being speculated to be something called "tired mountain syndrome" (seriously), which used to happen to Soviet underground nuke test facilities too.

27 Uh oh....

The danger isn't just to North Korean construction workers who are
probably trying to prepare the mountain for another, future test. The
real worst-case scenario is that the mountain collapses in on itself
releasing some radioactivity from previous tests into the atmosphere. If
that happens, the radioactivity could drift over a significant part of
the hemisphere, possibly over Russia and China.

Lots o' radioactivity under that mountain. I'm curious what the plume looks like.

China has been making noises of concern since the big test about how they'd better not get any significant radioactivity over their territory.

You know, China with their famous concern for the environment. It strikes me as more of a pretext, but I was cautiously optimistic that they'd have laid the groundwork to get really, really angry with their protege. Now the question is, will they follow through?

145 You all ever see film of the underground nuclear tests we used to do in Nevada? The device goes off underground, to be sure, but when it does the ground above goes POOM in a huge shower of dirt and rocks. Indeed the blasts all left big craters on the desert floor afterwards.

So the Norks are setting theirs off under a mountain? Yeah, I'd say they probably do indeed have a "tired mountain" problem along about now.

And here's a bit of trivia; back in the 1980s I had a neighbor, an old guy named Al. Al was one of the so-called "atomic veterans". Indeed, he was present for just about every above ground nuclear test the US ever did, including the first thermonuclear device (he said it was not a bomb as such, but rather a large two story cube shaped building with all the splodey stuff inside).

I asked him once, "So what does a hydrogen bomb sound like when it goes off?" He said it didn't go bang or boom, but rather it was "a huge sort of whoosh, like you had a thousand freight trains coming at you at once"...

233 Three things to keep in mind:

1. It's normal for underground tests to vent out a few months after the test. However, all bets are off here as the Norks have been using the same mountain instead of a mountain range and have made the collapse quite hard to predict.

2. Prevailing wind currents puts most of the fallout from a total mountain collapse over China, with of course some going to Japan, Russia, South Korea, etc. (Fun fact: The fallout from Chernobyl landed in Scandinavia *after* it had already circled the globe once.)

3. China's biggest worry is that their land near Punggye-ri is very good farmland, and therefore not only would they have to deal with fallout but a sizable famine.

He goes back the cab of the drilling machine and drags the operation out of cab and cuffs him about the face and neck. He hits him with his hard hat, pulls out a gun and shoots him. You hear no gunshot. The noise is so loud form the machine the actions of the people look like a silent movie.
The foreman climbs into the machine an throws a giant lever from right to left. You can see the giant spinning face of the driller slow and then changes direction and rock begins to fly furiously off the face of the tunnel. He hops out of the cab, picks up the hard hat of the dead operator and hands it to a guy standing in a trench mucking mud with a shovel; points over his shoulder at the cab and leaves.

There's just not that much radiation in them, no? This isn't a meltdown kinda situation... Fukushima is far more dangerous than the collapse/aeration of this mountain, yes?
Posted by: Kinley Ardal at October 31, 2017 01:44 PM (6JL3d)

Most of the radioactive material has decayed by now, but there are some longer half-lived material left, like strontium and cesium from the olde blasts. The biggest contributor if it happens will be the crud from the bomb that collapses the mountain. A big bomb, like the Norks are intending make collapse much more likely. The radioactivity will also be hot and fresh and at ground level. It will have lots of nasty stuff like radioactive iodine in it too.

The big danger is that they are trying to create a 3 stage Thermonuclear Weapon, Fission-Fusion-Fission. The third fission stage is the "dirtiest" in that it produces a lot of radioactive material.

Not sure how to answer this because you'd have to know the half life composition of the different elements and total volumes. Not to understate any of them but I don't think either Chernobyl or Fukushima were nearly as bad as many experts thought they'd be. Obviously they were still very very bad but they didn't have to relocate the entire populations of Ukraine and Japan. And they didn't melt through the center of the earth like the Whoreyweird dumbasses thought.

There was an area in the Ural Mountains where the Rooskies were indiscriminately dumping nuclear waste with nary a thought that doing that wasn't a very smart thing until one day a spy satellite's infrared detectors saw a really hot spot. Since it's the Rooskies they aren't saying a fucking thing of any detail about it but it's been off limits for a long while.

The wild card is how will Phat Boi respond to half a million Chinese troops crossing the bridge. Does he start lobbing stuff at South Korea?

Time for the CIA to send Phat Boi a unique Cuban cigar. With special greetings for successfully entering the nuclear club. I'll leave it up to them for what word that ends in _olonium they'll use to enhance the flavor.

291 These Koreans are fed propaganda from birth about
how Americans hate them, complete with cartoons of Americans beating
them up, etc. But they mostly believe it, despite living in a society
that they *know* will punish them if they step the slightest bit out of
line. Yet they are too stupid to recognize unsubstantiated propaganda,
and the oppressive nature of their own society, and continue to work
towards destroying us. Killing innocent people.

They deserve death.

292 >>No. They may have been fed propaganda, but which of us hasn't? They bear the moral responsibility for not seeing that it was false. They bear the moral responsibility for being complicit in a system that existed to kill innocent people (ie. us and the Japanese).

There is no comparison to not just the propaganda that North Korean citizens are bombarded with and the lack of any alternative news and the propaganda we are fed and the ability we have to search out alternative news reports.

The average North Korean is a like one of those Japanese soldiers that hid in a cave for 40 years after WWII and thinks the war is still going on. They have no idea what the world is really like.

I don't blame them at all. Their leadership on the other hand needs killing.

A follow up to my last comment in #270: There is also the problem that wherever you have soldiers, you will have bargirls and associated females about. To traditional Koreans this is seen as immoral, as well as the sentiment of "they're taking our women!" Even the most pro-American of South Koreans are a little unsettled about it, although I tell them this is just as true in communities around military bases in Europe, the rest of Asia, or stateside for that matter.

China has secured a concession from president Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua to build a sea-level canal through that country. Simply dredging and straightening the Rio San Juan that connects the big lake Lago de Nicaragua to the Caribbean would let ocean-going vessels reach the western shore of that lake. The Spanish brought galleons up into it. From the western shore, about 25 miles, through a range of low mountains, hills really, and you are at the Pacific.

337 Several years ago, visiting Springfield, IL, we went to Lincoln's office and surroundings. There was an extended Korean family there, about twelve people. Springfield isn't on the way to any place. If you're there, it's because you wanted to go there. And they wanted to visit Lincoln's office in Springfield during their travels in America.
So later we went north to Lincoln's tomb. The Korean family was there.
We left about the same time. There was a memorial to the Korean War dead nearby. One of the Koreans went over to it, clapped his hands over his head (which I think a version of Korean Buddhism or something does to attract the attention of the gods), and then prostrated himself against the memorial.
After we left the area, we found ourselves on a brisk walk way where various of the bricks had been bought by Koreans. There were businesses, Korean veterans organizations, families.
As in some places in Europe, some folks remember.
