Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Mitt Romney is a deeply religious man, and he is no doubt familiar with the story of the Israelites who fell down and worshipped the golden calf in spite of Moses’s best efforts. Republicans, being not so grand, have been seduced by Donald Trump’s gold-plated toilet — as sure a sign of the times as we have ever seen. Kevin D. Williamson

I guess Shit would know what a toilet is.

Quote II

Any authentic work of art must start an argument between the artist and his audience. Rebecca West

Wait until CBD sees this.

Quote III

“Seriously, I don’t feel I should have to justify my existence. Is there really no place for us in the world? Surely happiness is worth something.” Frank Stephens

Quote IV

The objective I propose is quite simple to state: to foster the infrastructure of democracy – the system of a free press, unions, political parties, universities – which allows a people to choose their own way, to develop their own culture, to reconcile their own differences through peaceful means.

This is not cultural imperialism: it is providing the means for genuine self-determination and protection for diversity. Democracy already flourishes in countries with very different cultures and historical experiences. It would be cultural condescension, or worse, to say that any people prefer dictatorship to democracy. Who would voluntarily choose not to have the right to vote, decide to purchase government propaganda handouts instead of independent newspapers, prefer government to worker-controlled unions, opt for land to be owned by the state instead of those who till it, want government repression of religious liberty, a single political party instead of a free choice, a rigid cultural orthodoxy instead of democratic tolerance and diversity? Ronald Reagan

When you're 0-8, why spend money on talented players or coaches or both?

Did you really think the politicization of the NFL starts and stops with the taking of a knee at the sounds of the national Anthem you are wrong. Now the San Fran 49’ers are acting as a Democrat Party PAC—giving $500,000 to promote gun control.
“According to ESPN, the 49ers presented the gun control pledge as part of creating a “more understanding and safer America.” The $500,000 will also be used to push a ban on bump stocks and armor-piercing bullets.

*****

What do Lefties want, when they aren't pushing for total gun confiscation? Better training?

Discussion From a public health standpoint, we would like to see more instructors covering topics such as firearm suicide and alternatives to gun use in self-defence, and to recommend safer storage of firearms.

Gun instructors fire back.

You know, you’d be surprised to learn that gun instructors actually take safety very seriously…unless you actually knew anyone in the gun community, where you’d see that desire for safety to be incredibly serious and universal.
Most also covered things like operating a firearm because, well, that’s what people are paying to learn. Duh.

Roger Goodell facing unemployment? Heh.

But the NFL received plenty of backlash resulting in a crash in ratings, drop in ticket sales, and ultimately thousands of fans have abandoned the league. IJR reported just over a week ago that the NFL's commissioner Roger Goodell's still has yet to be extended.

But now, it is being revealed that team owners may be the cause of this. ESPN is reporting that a conference call took place on Thursday, which discussed Roger Goodell's contract. During this call, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones led the call in a direction of halting the contract.

You can push the "Nicer" Climate Change theory. But if one doesn't believe in Climate Change it doesn't matter how you preach.

Scare tactics simply aren’t working when it comes to altering our behaviour to tackle climate change, believes Solitaire Townsend, CEO of sustainability consultancy Futerra. Highlighting instead what we stand to gain is something that everyone can get on board with, she writes

David Leonhardt writing in the New York Times recently called for a new climate narrative. Reacting to President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, he asked: “What would a more politically persuasive message about climate change sound like?” This is a good question. And the answer might come from a surprising source.

In the 1940s a famous salesman named Elmer Wheeler made what Time magazine called “a handsome living” by advising US businesses “don’t sell the sausage – sell the sizzle!” Wheeler knew that the big secret to successful selling is that you don’t advertise the sausage itself – because actual sausages are made from intestine, fat and the bits of pig that are only fit for grinding up. Instead, it’s the sizzling sounds and smells which get the juices flowing and the people buying. This is the secret to sales.

The government sleaze runs deep. And the players don't even care anymore about the appearance of impropriety.

She donated campaign cash to Barack Obama. After his election, he appointed both her and her husband as judges. Looks like those moves are paying huge dividends.

The federal judge presiding over whether Congress gets to see the bank records behind the Trump Dossier company has placed the financial records under sealed protective order, effectively hiding them from the public and even most lawmakers. Only a select few lawmakers will get to see a select few GPS banking records.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan is a long-time Barack Obama supporter and crony.

Deputy Dawg And AG Jeff Sessions recused himself for what again?

*****

Robert C. Campbell, quite The Man.

He spent the next two years there, together with about 10 million other servicemen and civilians. During 1916, he received a letter via the Red Cross that his mother was dying of cancer. Desperate, and with no other options, Campbell did the only thing he could.

He wrote to the German Emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm II, asking permission to see his mother. To his surprise (and no doubt, everyone else’s), the emperor replied and granted his wish. He was granted two weeks leave on condition that he gave his word as a British Army officer that he would return. A German POW Peter Gastreich asked for permission to see his dying father, but the British government denied his request.

The details of how Campbell managed it, exactly, are unknown, but it is believed he went to the Netherlands – which was neutral territory. From there he caught a boat to Kent and made his way to his mother’s house. How he returned is also a mystery, but return he did.

October 30, 1990, Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose was released on $10,000 bail, after being arrested for allegedly hitting a neighbour over the head with a bottle. The incident happened after a complaint to the police about loud music coming from the singer's house. via thisdayinmusic.com

If one calls for violence against a group, is that group justified in self-defense? Be careful for what you wish for "Professor".

A University of Southern California professor says he stands behind his tweets that include obscenities directed toward President Donald Trump, calls for whiteness to be “destroyed,” and the promotion of violence against the “white supremacist heterosexist patriarchy.”

Charles H.F. Davis, an assistant professor of clinical education and Chief Strategy Officer and Director of Research of the USC Race and Equity Center, defended his tweets in an email to The College Fix on Wednesday.

Roger Stone has been around for years. Never a big fan of his. But, in this instance, I say You go Roger.

Longtime Trump associate Roger Stone Jr. said he will sue Twitter in response to the company banning him from the platform.

“I have retained one of the best telecommunications lawyers in the country and will be bringing a legal action against Twitter over the suspension of my account,” he told TheWrap. “The battle for free speech has just begun.”

Mixed bag Baby Sister Update follows.

19 Baby Sister Update

First the good news:

So, Joyce and Jess had quite the day yesterday (Sunday):

"Ha, ha! Just today her neighbor across the street said, "You know you mentioning on CB the two of you driving around town topless was making my wife a little curious. 😡.... Thankfully she finally gets it."

So Sunday's outing / adventure was a total last minute change of plans / spontaneous fun. Due to the cooler weather Joyce and I had originally agreed to staying close to home, going for a WALK in her neighborhood, and practicing on our reading, writing & math skills in some home school books I just happen to have...

Anyhoo, wouldn't you know that about an hour before blast off I got wind of the local Fine Arts Fair in downtown Ocala. And that's where we ended up. Do y'all have any idea the powerful influence that a group of artsy folks with their beautiful handmade knickknacks have on a couple of women on a mission to find the "perfect" pieces of jewelry???

While at the Arts Fair, Joyce, pushing her wheel chair, walked at least A QUARTER OF A MILE ....FULL SPEED AHEAD! That's all I'm gonna say about that ....except that at one point we even picked up a hitch hiker. It was a great day!"

Thanks, Jessica!

Today was an Avastin day, and they also got the results of last week's MRI. Which was, unfortunately, not good:

The MRI indicated that the tumor has grown a bit ("subtle"). The challenge is that it's growing in a potentially dangerous direction, and is becoming Avastin-resistant (which is a problem).

Her oncologist has offered 3 treatment options, none of which are "great," but it is what it is. She now has to decide which (if any) she's interested in pursuing. As you can imagine, and especially considering her overall amazing progress, this is disheartening.

But, she is truly a fighter, and I know that all of the love, prayers and support continue to have a positive impact.

[Horde: To my fellow Hordelings, thank you all in advance for your prayers and well-wishes for my sister and her family]

44 Regarding gun safety and instruction - When I settled my wife's estate, one of her requests was to use some of her funds to purchase Eddie Eagle materials from the NRA and donate them to our kids' grade school. There's a metric shit ton of irony in her request but that's a story for another day.

To my surprise, the principal put up the posters and such in the gym and held mini safety lessons for the kids. She is a CCW holder and carries during work but still, pretty bold to do that given the potential pushback from some snowflake parents.

62 >>>Roger Goodell facing unemployment? Heh.

For me, it doesn't matter if Goodell is fired. He's not the problem with the NFL. He is *one* of the problems, sure.

But, for me, THE problem with the NFL is the players, plain and simple. This past year, with their support of Colin cops=pigs socks Kaepernick's disgraceful kneeling during the national anthem to express that "I will not stand to honor a flag that represents a country that oppresses Blacks and people of color" --- implying that the entire nation is racist and the entire nation's law enforcement is racist --- I now know that most of the members of the NFL --- from the players to the coaches to the owners --- hate the very fans who support the NFL.

A year of pig socks, smearing the entire nation's law enforcement, smearing the entire nation as racists, forcing a military veteran to apologize for standing during the national anthem, raising Black Power fists as "celebrations" for TDs and sacks and during the national anthem and then flat out telling fans that if they don't like all that, don't watch... well, that was it for me.

There is absolutely nothing short of a full apology for all that nonsense from every team in the league that will get me to return to supporting the NFL. You don't call your customers racists and bigots and then expect them to remain customers.

93 Any authentic work of art must start an argument between the artist and his audience. Rebecca West

West should know. She took her nom de plume from a rebellious character in one of Ibsen's plays, and had an illegitimate son by H.G. Wells. The son, Anthony West, wrote a biography of his father as well as an unflattering portrait of his mother in one of his novels. West never forgave her son for his account of her poor parenting (she lied about her relationship to him and left him in institutions during his early years while she developed her career), and she threatened to sue any publisher in the UK who published his novel. Anthony's novel was published in the UK only after his mother died in 1984.

The federal judge presiding over whether Congress gets to see the bank records behind the Trump Dossier company has placed the financial records under sealed protective order, effectively hiding them from the public and even most lawmakers. Only a select few lawmakers will get to see a select few GPS banking records.

156 This is a bit of a ramble but I think it will come together in the end.

Donald Trump has been described at times as a pragmatist, which in and of itself is neither good nor bad. The left, the Democrats, and the terrorists come across as religious fanatics about their beliefs. Ideologues, idealists.

My wife and I, because she is disabled don't go out much and so watch shows and movies on the TV. There not being much of interest mostly we re-watch shows we both liked and have collected on DVD.

We'll take a series and watch a couple episodes a night until we finish the series. Right now we are re-watching "The Closer" and tonight watched an episode from which a quote struck me as notable for these times. And since this post has quotes here is the one I saw tonight.

"I remember once hearin' a speech about what it meant to be an officer of the CIA and the man who gave this speech talked about the struggle to control civilization and how we're always fightin' the same fight, and he used the dark ages as an example.

And he talked about how on the one side you had the pragmatic king who was greedy and power hungry and basically took advantage of people whenever he could. And on the other side you had the idealistic church forcin' everyone to follow the same rules, believe the same thing, and all that.

Neither the king nor the church was ever completely right or wrong, both sides ended up doin' terrible things to get what they wanted, really terrible things. The point of the story was this, that this struggle from the dark ages had been goin' on forever, and the church and the king might take on different philosophies but they would always fight each other, pragmatists and idealists, and at most times, you're better off standin' on the sidelines, lettin' them duke it out.

But every once in a while, one side or the other decides it might be better just to blow up the whole world just to get its own way and when that happens you can't stand on the sidelines any more. You have to pick a team. So for tonight anyway, we're servin' the king."

159 I saw a show clip with Raquel Welch. She has an excellent plastic surgeon. The only problem was her face is frozen. So when she acts, only her mouth moves, there are no expressions. And even her mouth movement is kinda at an angle. Her forehead and face are lineless and on lockdown. It's kinda weird.

But in still photos she looks like she hasn't aged.

Yea, Cher's plastic work was good for a long while...then it wasn't. Jacklyn Smith also had great work & looked flawless for a long time. Haven't seen pics of her for years though.

Being in the public eye has gotta be rough as you age out. Maybe once you start doing all that filler stuff you can't stop. Or are afraid to stop & see yourself.

241 You can push the "Nicer" Climate Change theory. But if one doesn't believe in Climate Change it doesn't matter how you preach.

========

In a weird way, I think the fracking boom and Trump/Pruitt rolling back all the regs on fossil fuels will actually help these people on their green energy quest. As long as the Solyndras and the Joules (and the Teslas) soak up government subsidies, they have no motivation to do anything better. Now that they are faced with the possibility of (*gasp*!) years of cheap fossil fuel energy, they might start to come up with competitive solutions. As a denier, I really don't care one way or the other, but if they actually come up with better alternatives, awesome.

------------------------------

I hate rain
When it hits you in the face
when it dribbles down the back of your neck
when it runs down your arm and drips off your wrists
when it squishes in your shoes when you walk
when the ground turns to mud
when your shoes stick in the mud
when the mud builds up on soles of your boots
when you slip and fall
when you are trying to climb a slop and slide back down

Hate it. Hate wet hands.

Now a hot shower is not rain and it feels good on your face and the back of your neck, and shoulders. Completely different sensation. and it washes the mud off.

Here's the problem with Jane Fonda. As an actress, she can control her voice and her tone to make herself sound intelligent. She's very good at speaking lines, especially lines that are prepared ahead of time. She may sound intelligent and strong but she is actually a very weak and stupid person.

There have been biographies written about her and an autobiography. She was a complete sexual doormat to the men in her life. She didn't have the backbone to stand up for herself, she just went along with whatever kinky crap they demanded of her. She was a very pathetic woman.

The business with North Vietnam was just her childish stupidity. She was too dumb to know that she was being used. When POW's came back and said that they'd been beaten and tortured, she called them liars and hypocrites, because she was too stupid to understand that when they took her to a prison, they weren't showing her what really went on.

I saw her speak when I was in college, probably around 1970. She babbled every leftwing slogan there was. There was no depth to anything she said. The woman is an intellectually shallow idiot, who can make herself sound intelligent by reading lines well.

452 307 Just up the street a neighbor has a Gingko tree. Once thought to be extinct and known only from fossil records, they were found cultivated by Japanese monks. They make for a fairly decent landscape tree, so long as they are the seedless kind or whatever -- the fruit is foul smelling, I guess. But disease and insect resistant, and hardy. The cool thing I noticed, they drop all their leaves at once. Very polite, those Japanese.
Posted by: Common Tater at October 30, 2017 11:38 PM (mHOXD)

Another interesting thing about the Gingko tree, besides being sort of a "living fossil" (like the Dawn Sequoia) is that the veins in the leaves do not branch, like the veins in every other broadleaf that I have ever seen or heard of. Instead each vein originates at the petiole and runs to the far edge of the leaf. Cool. Also, Gingkos have male and female trees, so the non-fruiting one would be the male.

In that event, wanting/needing/loving to find "someone to love" wouldn't be the first thing that crossed my mind. Not even close.

And that's not even assuming that relationships are part of the "exposed lies" ... which would only make matters about love that much worse.

Then again, I doubt the lyricist's concept of love is even remotely the same as mine.

473 Those are mintons.

Mullions are posts that separate window units in a mutli-window assembly.

Fake mintons are called grilles. Makes a single pane of glass appear to be multiple.

Posted by: Iron Mike Golf at October 31, 2017 12:35 AM (di1hb)

Gotcha. It would be mintons, then, that I need. To do it right, from raw stock, I would need a router and router table to make it act as a shaper.

Because bad mintons would be a bad thing.

Well, love is a true thing and a good thing so finding someone to love would be a good thing to do when everything you know and or believe to be true was proved false. Findind someone to cling to, depend upon or drag down with you would not be loving them.

I kept those St. Jude stickers till they finally stopped begging for money.

Look. If I was a rich man, even moderately so, I'd give much much more.

Right now. All my money goes to just basics. It's fixed income and not much at that.

When I get my check (direct deposit) most of it is gone in the first 5 minutes to pay bills that need to be paid for me to exist. Then I have the princely sum of less than $200 for the rest of the month for food and any unforeseen incidentals.

$50 a week. This when I used to have over $300 a week over and above my living expenses.

It's not been easy. So someone asking for even a dollar from me is making a huge request.

They should be sending ME money.

Bitter Clinger, I think the Salvation Army bell-ringers with pots are legit. And that's one of the best, if not *the* best, outfits to give to, I believe. Very little overhead, no politics, pure charity (unless they, too, have fallen to the social rot in America).

I worked with their international branch (gave them your tax money) and they did outstanding low-overhead work in very bad places, in my experience taking the most depressing and terrible tasks on with good humor. Just my data set.

BC, it is well known that Americans are the most generous givers on the planet. We should all come with an All Day Sucker wrapper when born. And in my salad days, I gave 'my fair share'.

But then the gubmint decided they would take care of that chore for me. They decided I should give to all sorts of things that I wouldn't contribute a nickel to on my own.

And so now my giving is very selective, and usually close to home and close to heart.

herself made the mistake of going into business with a friend, and, after several years of trying, our buyer pool collapsed the Mexicans stopped buying restaurant equipment gear, starting last summer, and accelerating after the nomination, election and inauguration.

she gave up, and, of course, the vultures started circling 'round...

fortunately, i had the bright idea to call SA HQ, they sent someone by to check us out, and, the Monday after our last day "No, we're not selling anything for less than our cost, cash. FO", they showed up with a truck, a team of w*rkers, rolly carts and totes, and the place was empty in less than 2 days.

all of it a tax write off at sale price, since it was stuff they would otherwise have to buy for operations, not junk to sell at the thrift store.

great buncha guys, and truly thrilled that the org was getting all of this stuff.

581 When it comes to charitable giving, my plan is simple. I give to people who don't take, and then help only those who cannot help themselves.

I give to Bean's Cafe (look 'em up in Anchorage, great folks) who turn around and get folks cleaned up and some of 'em end up running the place themselves. They help folks who can't make it on their own. Lots of success stories.

I give to Brother Francis Shelter. They house the homeless, but they have rules, and you have to abide by those rules to get help. They will do everything in their power to get your ass off the street, if you cooperate.

I give to Covenant House. Teenagers should not have to be homeless. Again, there are rules about choices or you get the boot, but if you need it and your parents are awful or absent, shirt off our backs.

I knit baby clothes for the Women's Care Center that rescues families from the clutches of the abortuary.

I don't give to any place that has a corporate headquarters building. I'm not here to pay for anyone's golden parachute.

And I donate time. That is one commodity these places cannot get enough of, and so I do it. Costs me not one dime and is worth more than gold. Just do it.

Posted by: RickZ at October 31, 2017 03:29 AM (6xdDX)

587 I dunno to be honest. It was a non-denominational church in the suburbs of St Louis and we meet when he was knocking on doors in the neighborhood (don't live anywhere near there now) and asked to give him and the start up church (they are out of Champaign or Urbana, IL and were branching out) a chance and I did dragged the kiddos along since it had been a long while since we had set foot in a church. It was nice to begin with and slowly I lowered my sword as I become more comfortable when I confessed one day that good ol' mom was going through some hard times and difficulties in life and asked for prayers to help guide her and that's when he told me that instead of praying that I needed to make the choice. WTF are you talking about pastor - its simple he says, she either needs to follow the ways of the lord as laid out in the scriptures or you need to disown her and following the Lord and his teachings. Uh, doesn't it same somewhere in this Good Book that all of us are sinners and should confess openly to the Lord asking for forgiveness or am I out to lunch here. I've an idea pastor, you have a great day and DO NOT come knocking on my door ever again.

And I've moved around so much in the last 20 years or so that the closest I've actually been to joining another church is attending protestant services when deployed or in the field. Been to one church since retiring from Active Duty and found out that the head priest was arrested a few states over while on the run from the authorities for illicit relations with a minor and misappropriations of church funds the same week I decided to attend (been almost two years now). Wow, If I didn't know better, I'd think that the good Lord was trying to tell me something - thus that was the last time I stepped in church. I've been to quite a few Buddhist temples in the last couple of years traveling in and around SE Asia and find the serenity of praying in the temple to be very calming and self enriching.

Sure, I believe in the Lord and occasionally read the Bible but I'm also open to some of the Buddhist teachings that I've learned to appreciate as lots of the teachings and morals cross over.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Almost all of that is done by marketing companies. They walk into the charity, drop a decent sized check on the desk, and then take the name/logo etc to raise money. The percentage that makes it to the charity is a ?

While some remain uninfected, many English majors are convinced that any subject not blatantly unrelated, is something they know ALL about. Thus, having read Red Badge of Courage, they think they know all about the Battle of Antietam.

Note that, when he writes about econ (where he knows he has to do some work), he's not bad. But the BS has gotten to be too much; I just cannot read him. The only suspense is exactly where, in an essay about a sonnet, the MAGA Plot will be revealed.

618 We all know Mitt Romney is a fine man. And nobody is worshiping a golden
calf, Trump or anybody else (Worshiping their leaders is for Dems.) We
know who he is. But we are sick of losing with fine men like Romney. We
want a street brawler that will fight back and defend our interests, not
lose graciously and with decency.

I was looking at YaHHHOooo news web page. Holy crow, that thing reads like the old supermarket tabloid.

Posted by: Bruce at October 31, 2017 06:28 AM (8ikIW)

It has for a long time been a source of news not worth to print. Usually articles picked from sources that are questionable. Every third article was about Global Warming from news letters I never heard of. AOL news is the same way, left leaning news just like Yahoo. Don't read either of them anymore.

623 I was awakened at 10 PM last night by the missus coming into the bedroom to let me know about the sewer gas smell. I get up. The smell is all over the house. She says it happened in a 15 minute span. Throw open windows, I start checking drains. Nothing. I go to the one in the garage and am hit with a powerful stink. But I had just put water down the drain 2 weeks ago. The basement floor drain has the humidifier going into it, so this time of the year, it is not dry.
After a 90 minute air clean out, with 35 degree temps, the smell was gone.
I have no clue. If it was a clogged vent, it should only happen in one area I would think.

Posted by: Kreplach at October 31, 2017 07:03 AM (Wtll+)

638 The trouble with fine men is that they play by the "rules". Whatever they think the "rules" are.

And the Liberals/Democrats don't play by those "rules". They'll ACT like they play by the "rules" but when you do a deal with them, suddenly the "rules" get tossed and the deal wasn't what you thought it was. (ask Zombie Reagan)

Or they are too much the gentleman.

Trump's critics usually have one consistent complaint about him, that he's too outspoken or arrogant.

Yet he's no more outspoken or arrogant than most liberals/Democrats. And THAT'S what they don't like; that he fights back and doesn't let the Libs/Dems have it all their own way all the time.

This they call arrogance. Cause inside every genteel Republican is a "nice" guy who just wants to be liked and one of the gang, the cool kids and who hasn't ever been.

I want a street brawler. An eye gouger, a nut squeezer, a below the belt puncher.

I want libs/dems to KNOW they've been in a fight when they try him on.

And that's why I voted for Trump. And will continue to support him and laugh at the whiners whining about his tactics and lack of manners.

Dems are going to lose a few big players to the hysteria but they will end up directing the storm back at America, who undoubtedly is at fault, with new regulations, awareness, training, guidelines and of course plenty of govt money and jobs for all of this. That will be their goal, anyway. Never let a crisis go to waste.

What we have in Trump is a muscular conservative in temperment and nature culture warrior who is actually pushing back and trying to advance an agenda by any means necessary.

That is the sine quo non of politics, advance the interests and agenda of your base of voters.

The GOP as it exists now, especially at the federal level, is an illigitmate and fraudeluent political party as it does not in way advance the interests of it's voters and base.

666 I've never understood the interest in tattoos. Then again, my father had tattoos on each shoulder, and I grew up listening to his regret for the rest of his life, so my view is probably colored by that.

My niece is tatted up, and she sometimes posts pictures of beautiful women with extensive ink (not sure if it's permanent or not), but I have yet to see one picture where the woman is more attractive because she's inked. Thank the Lord I am not a teenager today. I'd be explaining to so many pierced and tatted girls why I wasn't going to be seeing them again.
