ABCNews: Computer Found In Steven Paddock's Room, Where Only One Dead Human Being Was Present, Is Missing Its Hard Drive

The obvious explanation is that there was a second person in the room who left after Paddock killed himself or who killed Paddock himself, and then fled.

Now, there are other possibilities. Maybe Paddock got rid of the hard drive some time before, but then why keep the computer?

And even if he did get rid of the hard drive himself -- if he was planning on killing himself, what was he protecting? What was on that hard drive?

14 Would you believe a dissolving hard drive?

Posted by: FBI agent Maxwell Smart at October 25, 2017 03:56 PM (7ZVPa)

15 Removing a laptop hard drive isn't something one does in a matter of seconds. Was it a secondary drive in a bay? Or an external hard drive, where they found evidence of the external drive still on the laptop? (That would be way more plausible - he could've left the drive somewhere else)

The way the article reads it's like "oh it didn't have any drive at all" but that means the laptop wouldn't even boot. Why the hell would you bring it?

Oh but someone just "removed" the primary hard drive from a laptop? That requires removing the damn case most of the time.

Has anyone reported the make/model of the laptop anywhere?

19 It's also worth noting that you don't need a hard drive to use a computer. If Paddock was working off of a live usb, say, then he would have no reason for a hard drive. I used to do that with a lot of my ancient computers that either didn't have hard drives or the drives were too small or were just unusable.

Personally, I never install operating systems on any hard drives. They're just too much of a pain-in-the-ass. I run all my computers off live usbs or live discs.

The brother of Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock was arrested on child porn charges

The brother of Las Vegas mass shooter Stephen Paddock has been arrested in North Hollywood, California for child pornography, authorities confirmed to Fox 11.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on Wednesday said that Bruce Paddock was taken into custody around 7 a.m. local time that morning at an assisted living center on Laurel Canyon Boulevard.

Bruce Paddock is facing possession of child pornography charges after an investigation headed up by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that involved both the FBI and the LAPD.

The investigation started with a tip about Bruce Paddock that came in months before the Las Vegas shooting, but authorities did not know his whereabouts until another tip lead authorities to his North Hollywood location.

Bigfoot was the name of an old Quantum hard drive. It had a 5.25" footprint instead of a 3.5". Thing was friggin' huge, but they could add a lot of capacity to the bigger disc at a lower price than 3.5".

I suppose I can see a scenario where he dicks around on the laptop for the first few days he was there, takes the hard drive out right before the shooting (a few hours, maybe), goes down to the casino floor or whatever and ditches it in a garbage can. Decides to ditch just the drive because it's easier to conceal and ditch then an entire laptop.

Some guy was taking the video at the Mandalay Bay, looks to be about the same elevation with a fairly decent HD camera and digital zoom. In the last video it actually looks like the FBI agent is putting something on the glass of one of the trailers. But mostly FBI in little booties walking around with paint rollers.

Whoever "they" is in this case. FBI? Media? Local police?
The truth will come out, like it always does. But they're certainly delaying it as long as possible. And that could be for good reason for all we know. Possibly because there's more to it and they need quiet to sort it out. Who knows?

that reminds me. I'm sure we've all seen similar lists and stuff but this one gave me a chuckle. The all caps are the writers not mine.

WE ALWAYS HEAR 'THE RULES' FROM THE FEMALE SIDE
NOW HERE ARE THE RULES FROM THE MALE SIDE

THESE ARE OUR RULES!

PLEASE NOTE. THESE ARE ALL NUMBERED #1 ON PURPOSE!

1. MEN ARE NOT MIND READERS.

1. LEARN TO WORK THE TOILET SEAT. YOU'RE A BIG GIRL. IF IT'S UP, PUT IT DOWN. WE NEED IT UP, YOU NEED IT DOWN. YOU DON'T HEAR US COMPLAINING ABOUT YOU LEAVING IT DOWN.

1. CRYING IS BLACKMAIL.

1. ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT. LET US BE CLEAR ON THIS ONE:

SUBTLE HINTS DO NOT WORK!
STRONG HINTS DO NOT WORK!
OBVIOUS HINTS DO NOT WORK!
JUST SAY IT!

1. YES AND NO ARE PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE ANSWERS TO ALMOST EVERY QUESTION.

1.. COME TO US WITH A PROBLEM ONLY IF YOU WANT HELP SOLVING IT. THAT'S WHAT WE DO. SYMPATHY IS WHAT YOUR GIRLFRIENDS ARE FOR.

1. ANYTHING WE SAID 6 MONTHS AGO IS INADMISSIBLE IN AN ARGUMENT. IN FACT, ALL COMMENTS BECOME NULL AND VOID AFTER 7 DAYS.

1. IF YOU THINK YOU'RE FAT, YOU PROBABLY ARE. DON'T ASK US.

1. IF SOMETHING WE SAID CAN BE INTERPRETED TWO WAYS AND ONE OF THE WAYS MAKES YOU SAD OR ANGRY, WE MEANT THE OTHER ONE.

1. YOU CAN EITHER ASK US TO DO SOMETHING OR TELL US HOW YOU WANT IT DONE. NOT BOTH.
IF YOU ALREADY KNOW BEST HOW TO DO IT, JUST DO IT YOURSELF.

1. WHENEVER POSSIBLE, PLEASE SAY WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO SAY DURING COMMERCIALS.

1. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS DID NOT NEED DIRECTIONS AND NEITHER DO WE...

1. ALL MEN SEE IN ONLY 16 COLORS, LIKE WINDOWS DEFAULT SETTINGS..
PEACH, FOR EXAMPLE, IS A FRUIT, NOT A COLOR. PUMPKIN IS ALSO A FRUIT. WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT MAUVE IS.

1. IF WE ASK WHAT IS WRONG AND YOU SAY 'NOTHING,' WE WILL ACT LIKE NOTHING'S WRONG. WE KNOW YOU ARE LYING, BUT IT IS JUST NOT WORTH THE HASSLE.

1. IF YOU ASK A QUESTION YOU DON'T WANT AN ANSWER TO, EXPECT AN ANSWER YOU DON'T WANT TO HEAR..

1. WHEN WE HAVE TO GO SOMEWHERE, ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING YOU WEAR IS FINE...REALLY.

1.. DON'T ASK US WHAT WE'RE THINKING ABOUT UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO DISCUSS SUCH TOPICS AS FOOTBALL OR MOTOR SPORTS.

1. YOU HAVE ENOUGH CLOTHES.

1 .. YOU HAVE TOO MANY SHOES.

1. I AM IN SHAPE. ROUND IS A SHAPE!

1.. THANK YOU FOR READING THIS. YES, I KNOW, I HAVE TO SLEEP ON THE COUCH TONIGHT.. BUT DID YOU KNOW MEN REALLY DON'T MIND THAT? IT'S LIKE CAMPING...

PASS THIS TO AS MANY MEN AS YOU CAN - TO GIVE THEM A LAUGH...

PASS THIS TO AS MANY WOMEN AS YOU CAN - TO GIVE THEM A BIGGER LAUGH, BECAUSE ITS TRUE

It's probably a long shot, but he may have had a confederate(s) that took the drive. I've read that muslims sometimes have "helpers" along when they commit terror operations. These helpers stay with them for days before, help them plan, and stay close to the terrorist almost to the end, mostly to guide them and keep them steady and make sure they don't wimp out and go through with it.

Again, not likely I guess from what we know. But makes me wonder....

1. In the picture on the left, the blood pattern beneath/around his head indicates that he was laying down with his head on the floor when shot. There is no splatter whatsoever---just a pool of blood. If he was sitting or standing, would be a much different blood pattern.

2. In the picture on the right, you can see that he is lying on top of a rifle (!) I mean, first of all, why would he lie down to do the deed, and secondly, why would he lie down on top of an uncomfortable rifle just to blow his own head off. Sit in a chair like a "normal" person!

Definitely was killed by someone else. Probably after a struggle and he was knocked out first.

So whoever is responsible did not want us to know the reason, and the missing drive is part of the attempt to obscure that (whether by the FBI, or some as yet unknown party). I doubt it'll be found. They couldn't even find Hillary's shoe by the bollard, correct?

290 "Las Vegas shooter's laptop missing its hard drive."

Or maybe the "sources" are lying about the missing drive. Could be the FBI/LE does indeed have the drive and are disseminating lies outside the agency. They're allowed to do that as long as it's not in Court. And even then they still might try.

I think it more likely that FBI/LE removed data storage devices ASAP, much more so than Paddock (or accomplice). Paddock had planned an extensive mass homicide event. He knew his fate. Why would he care if anyone found his drive and its contents? He knew he'd be killed. There's no way he was going to escape any dragnet. He was not that stupid.

Possibly because you're speculating on an unfinished investigation based on tidbits released through reporters who couldn't handle their classes that required actual attention to detail and ended up in J-school.

Narratives of fantastic conspiracies should wait for reasonable explanations to be thoroughly examined and discarded. But of course this never occurs after major media events, so we end up with grassy knolls, "empty" planes, "hands up" garbage instead.

"Video poker winner" story doesn't work either, because there is no such thing as a multiyear video poker winning streak. The braindead newsmedia really showed their ass reporting that story without skepticism.

"without a HD it was a brick, completely useless. that makes no sense."

That's not true in the least.

Modern computers can be booted from USB thumb drives. There a couple of approaches - unpack an ISO file to a bootable thumb drive using a tool like Rufus, or using a multiboot tool like easy2boot where you can simply drop ISO images onto the stick and then boot from them.

Some of those images can be run in a "live mode" were they get loaded into a ramdisk in memory and the thumb drive can be removed without causing problems.

One of the curious things I heard this morning is a claim that a data destroying program had been run. If the HDD is missing, and the laptop had been powered off there is no way to know that. So...was the laptop discovered in a powered up state with the software (bleachbit? darik's boot & nuke??) running?

But as pointed out, why not dispose of the laptop entirely? was it streaming video? was it under remote control? and if so, why not just power it down remotely?

"But anything accessed over hotel wifi should be trackable, right?"

Maybe. It could be a bit tricky if there were a lot of people on the same access point, that could be a lot of traffic. If it was a wired connection, that would be easier.

And it also depends on how much metadata Mandalay Bay collects. But even then, MAC addresses can be spoofed, even under windows. MAC = Media Access Control, which is assigned by the manufacturer of the networking hardware. This is how an access point know which packets goes to you, and which packets go to other people.

This is presuming that he was using MBay's network. It is possible he had a 4G hotspot

Then there's the possibility that he was using a VPN to make an encrypted connection to a remote host in a foreign country, and then making the connection to the final destination. Good luck serving a search warrant or subpoena on a VPN provider in Russia or China.

There are other, less conventional ways to do similar things in a very untraceable manner, if you have access to compromised machines. And only a little bit of tech support is required.
