Saturday Morning Weird News Dump

Good morning. Another Saturday morning has arrived. Here are just a few things that didn't get their due here at the AoSHQ this past week.

*****

sat thread photo .jpg

(We all need a mug of this at times)

*****

  • Wouldn't it be fun to set up a Weber grill and cook some bratwurst?
  • Somethings are just wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
  • Don't know why his parents didn't name him Dumb Shit.
  • Time to cut the cord and the dish and the cell phone.
  • Burrito, via air delivery.
  • Someone has too much spare time on her hands.
  • And another guy with too much time and not enough of something else on his hands.
  • Break out the world's smallest violins.
  • No word if our resident art critic will be using this in his daily threads.
  • Chicago now has a new title.

Enjoy the open thread. Be kind to one another and no running with sharp objects. Have a great weekend!

The people that will hurt the most are those who work for companies that make some kind of matching contribution to 401Ks. That matching amount was based on the maximum allowable by the IRS. when I was working they would match 50 cents on the dollar up to 6K. I guess that will go down and a lot more people will retire with little savings and depend more on SS since most companies no longer have much of a retirement program.

Of course you're correct but the tax deferred aspect (nothing from those fucks is free) allows it to grow faster and is a primary incentive to save. And don't get me started on mutual funds that declare a dividend even in a big loss so you have to pay taxes after getting kicked in the nuts.

As I understand it, only the new deposits into the program will be limited as to the amount that will be tax free. The accrued interest and/or dividends will still not be taxed until you withdraw them. But there will be another problem coming from this. If you put in more than the maximum amount it will be already taxed money that gets mixed with non-taxed money. That will make it very difficult to determine your taxes once you start withdrawing unless you keep detailed records for a lifetime.

AT&T TV/Internet only... AT&T and Spectrum (formerly insight and before that TWC) are really the only two options around here for TV/Internet packages as Verizon can suck on a bag of dicks from my previous experiences with them...

I have T-Mobile for my cell service and they have been very good to me over the years - our plan cost 100 bones/month and its unlimited everything and I would connect to the internet with my phone but I work from home and while its fast it isn't Broadband fast if you know what I mean.

FWIW, my neighbor cut some of the cord and is giving ROKU and HULU (he's paying around $50/month going the ala carte route) a try and will give feedback but his mobile is AT&T so I ask how much his bill is a month and he said like $120 and I told him he was getting ripped off.

Then the very next year they changed the rules that did not allow tax-free contributions if you had a 401K. I immediately quit putting money in the IRA. The account sat idle for years until I finally closed it last year and paid the taxes and penalties.

148 Interest in spirituality has been booming in recent years while interest in religion plummets, especially among millennials. The majority of Americans now believe it is not necessary to believe in God to have good morals, a study from Pew Research Center released Wednesday found. The percentage of people between the ages of 18 and 29 who "never doubt existence of God" fell from 81% in 2007 to 67% in 2012.

Meanwhile, more than half of young adults in the U.S. believe astrology is a science. compared to less than 8% of the Chinese public. The psychic services industry - which includes astrology, aura reading, mediumship, tarot-card reading and palmistry, among other metaphysical services - grew 2% between 2011 and 2016. It is now worth $2 billion annually, according to industry analysis firm IBIS World.

There is something healthy about challenging one's perspective on the universe, not buying what you were told when you were a child, and just believing it blindly.

This new type of atheism though, it's delusional. It's the willful rejection of the possible. It comes from fear and anger. There is nothing healthy about putting your fingers in your ears and saying "I reject you, because I'm mad at my parents."

Those are the people who will then blindly believe the gods on their teevee screens, or their twitter feeds or whatever.

Globally Warmening is real! How do you know? That nice person who says we're all rainbows told me so.

158 I see the latest fad in web pages is notifications of whatever at the top of the site.

And of course they have to ask you if you want those notifications turned on. Which is intrusive and unnecessary but no every page on the planet seems to have one of these whether you need it or not.

Ever notice how web pages go thru these fads? First some large popular site uses the idea then all of a sudden every web meister in the world decides (s)he's got to get one on their page and irritate their few readers with requests to turn this mostly useless service on.

I remember when flashing banner marquees were the big thing and every one had one until they got so annoying you can't find one anywhere. That's where all internet page fads wind up usually. Some tricky code and boom off we go.

The need for the divine, the "search" is written on the human heart. Every person at some point has to create or at least look for their own ontology. The existential questions don't disappear just because your culture has rejected religion as hokum. Left with no ontology or even with the post-modern "life is absurd" rejection of existential questions, man will create their own.

There was a link to an article from instapundit this week, women were having affairs to "find what was lacking in their marriages but wanted to stay in the marriage." Pages on pages of excuses about how if they didn't get good sex they could just supplement or if they didn't get enough intimacy, etc. The first comment was "any of these women ever set foot in a church?"

When a moral authority is absent people will create one. Funny that Gaia is suddenly that moral authority and her rules lack all benefits to the individual only the collective. See what they did there?

The World Health Organization's decision to name President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe a "good-will ambassador&" has provoked outrage from medical professionals, rights groups, opposition leaders and others, who took to social media to call it an "insult" and "a sick joke."The 93-year-old African leader, who has long faced United States sanctions over his government's actions, received the honor in Montevideo, Uruguay, this past week from the W.H.O.'s director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in relation to fighting noncommunicable diseases in Africa.

Dr. Tedros said he was "honored" to be joined by Mr. Mugabe, who could use the role "to influence his peers in his region."

Actually we discussed it a bit because the culture lacking that particular concept meant there was never going to be compliance beyond the individual level. Other issues were that the family as a whole was the priority, not the well-being of an individual child, and a tendency to believe their communities authority figures over medical experience (as best as I remember). There were about a half dozen reasons given and the last was the missing cultural concept that pretty much doomed the rest.
