Generic Wednesday Night ONT

Hello Mr. and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea. Welcome to the future. See how that works? Every time you read it, it's true. Welcome to the future. And again. And again. Anyhow, lets open with an eagle:

GETTING OLD

2 TIMOTHY 4:7

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith

Sgt La David Johnson, may you rest in peace and rise in glory. Ms. Johnson and kids, you have the grateful thanks of Ace of Spades HQ. God bless you.

Wife Devastated After US Soldier Killed In Niger: ‘He Was Everything To Us’

I'm not even going to link the disgusting attempt by Dems to politicize this and smear the president. You can go look it up yourself if you're interested.

TROLLEY PROBLEM

Pro-abortion activist Patrick S Tomlinson thinks he's so smart. “If you had to save a 5 year old or 1000 embryos, which would you save? The 5 YO? HA You just proved you don't think embryos are human!” This is the kind of mushy brain thinking that dim people think is clever. It's just a restatement of the classic trolley problem. Hey, if it was my kid verses a dozen babies, or the Dallas Cowboys, or three convicts and a cannibal clown, or Obama, Osama and Jesus Christ walking into a bar, I'd save my kid. That doesn't mean I think the others aren't human. He's been raked over the coals and shown how stupid his question is by everyone, but here Ben Shapiro just shreds his stupid “Gotcha!”. Worth a read just for the contrast between Tomlinson's mushy “logic” and actual logic.

I HAVE A MESSAGE FOR YOU

You really should watch this.

Spellbinding story, told by an old Jewish woman, about how she left her father to die on a train to Auschwitz, and the message she received years later. 12 minutes long but I was rapt the entire time.

NASTY, BRUTISH AND FAT

Of Hobbes and Harvey Weinstein

If I had to pick the most destructive idea humanity has ever had, the idea that people are inherently good would likely make the championship round. People are not “good”, we are a) sinners fallen from grace (for the Theists out there) or b) nothing more than animals (for the rest of y'all). We can be good, certainly, but it is not the default condition and without outside intervention (religion, government, society, etc..), we quickly revert to the mean.

Related:

Last week, The Daily Wire came under fire for a video that it made for Columbus Day. Here it is:

At first editor in chief Ben Shapiro defended the video as satire, then he removed it and apologized because it was “racist”. He made a very classy apology, and that is his choice, but there is a dirty truth here that nobody wants to mention: Native Americans WERE unbelievably brutal and savage. They were a Stone Age people, and ALL Stone Age peoples are unbelievably brutal and savage. It doesn't matter if they are white, tan, red, yellow, or black, it's the nature of being human. Hell, people today are unbelievably brutal and savage, even in these “civilized” times. It doesn't matter if they are:

White:

Holocaust.jpg

Tan:

India.jpg

Red:

Yanomamo.jpg

Yellow:

Chinese.jpg

or Black:

Genocide.jpg

How can pointing out something be “racist” if the thing is question is a universal human constant, shared by all races? Short answer: it can't.

LEAVE 'EM LAUGHING

This is not only emblematic of the garbage that is news these days, but it's also the funniest thing I've seen in months. It still makes me literally laugh out loud, and I've seen it dozens of times.

I remember how I fluffed up Tim's hair one last time before they closed the coffin. The funeral home had combed it and it wasn't the way I wanted to remember him. I used to call it his "fluff head." 107 Needed a word processor for the laptop. The current laptop just has the MS Office that you have to pay monthly for (I never subscribed to it) and the generic Wordpad on Windows. I started shopping for a WP. Ran across something called Libre Office. It had a nice price, free. Figured what the hell. Downloaded it and tried to open an old resume I had on an ancient version of MS Word. Pleased to discover that I was able to open it. Played around with Libre Office for a bit. For my purposes, it works fine. I don't really need anything but the WP but you never know, might need a spreadsheet or something someday. Also, free. If I don't like it, I'll uninstall it.

Forking code is really common in community-developed and open source projects. That's why there are hundreds of Linux distributions and they're all based on maybe 5 root distributions, and yet there's no "official" Linux™ brand distribution. In some cases it goes full circle: Netscape open-sourced their Mozilla codebase as an escape pod as the company imploded, which spawned Firefox as the plucky underdog power-to-the-people browser against IE, and now there are maybe 20 major forks of Firefox (e.g. Blue Moon which seems popular here) because now Firefox is the monolithic uncaring corporate blah blee blur whatever.

247 This is the kind of mushy brain thinking that dim people think is clever. It's just a restatement of the classic trolley problem.

========

What worries me about leftists is what I think their response would be to the "raft problem". Ie. if there were two men in a life raft starving, and one knew the cure for cancer, would that give him the right to kill the other man and eat him, so that he could survive long enough to communicate his discovery to the rest of civilization?

I think the leftists are consequentialists. They think "It's ok for me to do evil if it eventually results in the greater good". This is the justification they give for a lot of their legislation.

Most of these apparent paradoxes can be resolved by Aquinas' law of double effect:

318 Dad has this posted on the wall in a frame: it is a clipping from a newspaper, with a not on the back saying that "this is the best article ever".

Lucius Beebe wrote and was syndicated, but owned the Territorial Enterprise in Silver City, Nevada -- the same paper Mark Twain wrote for.

I took a picture of it and typed it out from the tablet . . . an exercise in frustration.

Remember, this article is from about 1963

In the years of my youth, a period approximating Appomattox Court House, as it now seems, or at least ante-dating the Custer massacre, cigarettes were not a highly regarded article of commerce. Their use generally was restricted tot he lower orders of society, pimps, race track touts, Congressmen and the like, and certainly none were ever smoked in my father's house by any member of the family, although now and then guests asked if they might be excused to go into the garden and smoke a cigar after dinner.

Smoking in the presence of ladies was unthinkable and there was still a statute on the local Boston laws books against smoking pipes on the public street, pipes being associated with the Irish and not to be tolerated in the presence of gentlefolk.

There were, to be sure, exceptions to the rule. My friend Edwin Arlington Robinson, was notoriously a smoker of Sweet Caporals, but he was a recognized and widely acclaimed poet and was accorded the tolerance usually extended to genius. A bleak and craggy Down Easter, he had been a mighty skirmisher with the bottle in earlier times and cigarettes were regarded as a sort of tapering off. Most other men of letters of the time smoked pipes, and cigars were, of course, the universal hallmark of manhood and symbol of prestige according to their quality and cost.

NOR WAS THIS PREJUDICE against cigarettes a parochial one confined to Puritan New England. As evidence of bad morale among the ship's company in the sinking of the Titanic, witnesses attested that in the lifeboats many stewards and other members of the crew lit cigarettes in the presence of ladies, not to mention the Grim Reaper and the greatest catastrophe of modern times, It was, incidentally, the most serious evidence of misconduct ever made against the company's servants on that ill-starred vessel.

Tobacco in those days wasn't especially big business, certainly nothing to attract the hostility of a predatory federal Government bent on taxing out of existence every possible source of revenue except the billion dollar union racket, some of whose components are wealthier by far than the industries they seek to impoverish by extortion.

Now the wowsers, do-gooders and reforming trash generally including "medical authorities" from mail order schools of osteopathy with nothing better to occupy their childish minds, are grinding out a sustained barrage of anti-cigarette propaganda. The Surgeon General of the U. S., presumably an handy fellow in the realm of gunshot wounds, has appointed the usual committee to investigate the potentialities for lung cancer, and will publicity-mad politicians of the more order, like California's superfluous Governor Brown, are rallying to denounce the sinful cigarette as a smoke screen for the evasion of more potentially dangerous issues.

To date the principal source of this septic fright talk about lung cancer has been England where socialized medicine has reduced the once haughty practitioners of Harley street to a confraternity of seedy pensioners dependent on the favors of the Ministry of Health that is a shining example of bureaucratic incompetence, corruption and political expediency.

The massed forces of bigotry, superstition, and infected politics are ganging up on tobacco in general and cigarettes n particular with an ultimate view to their total prohibition. And don't think for a minute this cretin babbling about lung cancer isn't going to cost you and me money. Tobacco taxes last year yielded $3.2 billions in State and Federal revenue, and an least dime's abatement in this sum is going to be compensated by some other confiscatory rooking of the tax-payer to support he nest of boodling elected mendicants in Washington D.C.

The time for all men of independence and integrity to start smoking is right now.

I doubt that I have smoked ten cigarettes in the last ten years except when I am in England and can get Sullivan and Powell's incomparable product, but I'm dusting off a lot of gold cigarette cases that have been lying around bank vaults for decades and am going to re-establish a habit I neither admire nor take pleasure in as a patriotic duty.

The cold war that is waged every minute of the day and night between the voters and tax-payers of the United States and the Government at Washington is getting hot with a meddlesome, impertinent and paternalistic hierarchy of shiftless time-servers trying to move in once more on the personal liberties of those of us who maintain them with their front feet in the pubic hog trough.

For 13 long years I fought the good fight along with 160,000 other American patriots allied against the infamies of prohibition to maintain a state of universal alcoholism and put the boots to the thrice damned religious bigots like Bishop Cannon and Mrs, Ella Boole and the heels on Capitol Hill who did their obscene bidding. I've got scars of battle on my liver to show for it.
I'm not too old to enlist again in the unceasing battle that all Americans have to fight against the enemy and everybody's enemy, the Federal Government of the United States in all its bureaucratic infamy

May I offer you a light?

390 Speaking of Suburbans, mine is back in fine fettle. The brand new electric fuel pump I installed a few days ago was a dud, and I took it out, and installed a used one that I had thrown in my spares basket. It seems to work fine. The burb was getting progressively harder and harder to start, and on Sunday it flat-out wouldn't start. While I was over on Glendale. Got a boost, drove it back here, and checked batteries Monday morning. Left side (secondary) was 100%, but right side (primary, and closest to starter) showed only 11 volts open circuit, and dropped deep into the red when I applied the load with my load tester.

Went to a local auto wrecker, and got a used battery for $30. First one was a dud, but they gave me another, and it works fine. Engine cranks real fast now, and starts readily.

Then today, I found a half-flat tire, and had to have it fixed. Sheesh.

They killed him horribly...you can read the details from a witness here;

400 I'm sure she'll either apologize for this comment or end up throwing it down the memory hole, but actress Jessica Chastain was refreshingly candid and honest about Hollywood, per a piece at HotAir today.

"This is an industry rife with racism, sexism and homophobia," she said, speaking to a room full of women including Laura Dern, Riley Keough and Aaron Sorkin. "It is so closely woven into the fabric of the business that we have become snowblind to the glaring injustices happening every day."

[Chastain] continued, "Oh we're very quick to point the finger at others and address the issue with social action and fundraising. Yet there is a clear disconnect between how we practice what we preach in our industry." Chastain pointed specifically to actors and actresses who have been told to stay closeted while the industry champions same-sex marriage, as well as the wage gap that exists between the sexes even as the industry itself supports equal pay legislation.

Additionally, Chastain addressed the issue of sexual harassment in the wake of the accusations mounting against Harvey Weinstein: We rally against the presidential candidate who slants a narrative of his sexual assault as mere locker room talk, but at the same time we ignore the stories and warnings of sexual predators in our offices."

401 Now that's a philosophical question. Are people inherently good? But is it really the question? Perhaps it's instead are people pre-disposed to be good? Or is good too weak of a word or the wrong word to describe it altogether?
Are we instead talking about love. Are people pre-disposed to love? That's more likely than that we are inherently good. We are inherently innocent in the beginning. Generally humans love their parents, their providers from the beginning. Even if they're evil. Humans tend toward that.
So is it instead that we have the capacity to be good that is born out of our basic love?

Ditto.

I was fine with anything but Dodgers/Yankees.

A silly prejudice; neither has been dominant for a long time, and that was my original beef with both.

I always hated the Yankees on GP, but tended to really love the individual players. Alex Rodriguez ruined that for me, I could barely overcome my dislike for him enough to watch a game.

Especially after he slapped Bronson Arroryo like a gad damned girl.

That and Roberto Alimor spitting on the ump were two moments in baseball I will never forget. Shame about Roberto, because I loved him, loved the entire family...his daddy and we won't even get into Sandy....

Anyway I don't hate the Dodgers, just never could get that worked up about them. I do like Kershaw.

426 And Donald Trump never committed any sexual assault. He made a statement, in conversation that went something like this: "When you are rich and famous, women throw themselves at you. They let you grab 'em by the pussy."

Two take-aways:

1. "let you" means consent, expressed consent. So, no assault.

2. It's pretty clear he is using the "universal you", and that it applies to the entire class of wealthy and famous male celebrities.

435 Christianity teaches that we are fallen beings. I think that's more accurate than saying we are either basically good or bad. sinners are capable of redemption; good people can be corrupted. some politicians started as idealists and were corrupted by power. some Hollywood scum started out with a genuine love of artistry and movies. Hell, some of those dumb antifas are convinced they are on the side of good. The humbling thing to remember is that all of us, even the best, are sometimes capable of rationalizing crappy behavior.

They don't care about Communism's long, bloody, murderous history of failure and oppression. They say the "right" people just haven't been in charge....yet.

One other co-worker insisted to me that the American Indians were just happily co-existing on the American plains right up until the evil white man showed up. When I pointed out that they were separate and distinct warrior cultures with their own languages, signs, oral histories and cultures, he just glared at me.

When I noted that the Blackfeet would kill any Shoshone, Cree, Sioux or Cheyenne they found on their hunting grounds, he grew angrier still.

He then pointed out his Aztec tattoo, and started telling me of all of the hardships whitey had brought to his people. When I asked him if he pined for the days of bashing babies heads against rocks, in hopes the Gods would provide a good corn crop, he grew even angrier. When I asked if he wanted to return to the days of sacrificing 14 year-old virgins to the Sun God, or resume practicing cannibalism, the conversation neared its end.

He was shocked that I oppose "Anti-Fa." I said, "The guys screaming for "More Dead Cops?" The guys burning our flag? The guys beating the hell out of Trump voters and calling us "Nazis?"

Yep.

God help us.

Posted by: Donna&&&&&&V. at October 19, 2017 12:19 AM (P8951)

460 Oh! We're pontificating on the moral position of the human condition! I wanna play!

1) People are born neither "good" nor "bad" but instead are simply "innocent." Infants are incapable of knowing, let alone choosing, right from wrong, and so their actions are innocent.

2) People, being "selfs," are inherently selfish - or at least self-centered. Watch any toddler playing with other toddlers. You'll hear "No! That's mine!" every couple of minutes. At that particular stage, children are still innocent. The problems start cropping up later when they do know, and can choose, right from wrong.

3) Theologically, all humans are fallen and born into a fallen world. We *will* sin. Indeed, (see point 2), we really can't stop ourselves. Very few people ever rise to the point of being good for its own sake - and the moment you are "good" for any reason other than just being good (whether that reason is Fear of God, desire for Heavenly Reward, Pride, Shame, the good feeling you'll get helping someone, or whatever), you have immediately soiled the "good" you did with your selfishness (fun thought, huh?). Thus the idea in all Theistic religions (and most pan- or poly-theistic ones) that man must somehow be redeemed or "set right" with God (or the gods, or the cosmos, or the flying spaghetti monster, or whatever).

4) Humans, left to their own devices, will be brutal, horrible people. That toddler will never learn right from wrong; they will learn only weak from strong. On an animal level (which is where you are if you reject religion), there is no higher authority. Only the "fittest" survive, let alone thrive, so be more fit than your competition - and everyone is competition.

504 BourbonChicken, is that a back-hand compliment?

Iron Sky is the polar opposite of The English Patient. That movie had the most talented people and the most pedigreed awards possible, including the Oscar for best picture (one of Harvey's?) and nominations for director and cinematography. As Insty would say, credentialed, not merited. I worked at a movie theater and I heard DOZENS of people say that it was awful. At no point in three hours will you be slightly entertained or piqued.

Iron Sky takes a campy shitty premise and ridiculous characters, and manages to satisfy every arc cleverly. The acting is great. I even like ersatz Sarah Palin. I would not ask William Goldman or John Hughes to improve upon it. They can't. It is a perfect little piece of trash.

I guess the lesson is "do humble things well" or something.

Yes, it was horrible to be exterminated because you were Jewish. Or homosexual. Or Slavic. Or someone who lived in the walled city that didn't surrender early enough for the attackers to be somewhat lenient.

There's a race card. There's a jewish card. Both are pretty much overplayed, IMO. I'll admit that the former points to events that occurred ~80 years prior to the latter.

I believe the preferred word choice (in the active voice) would typically be "smote." As in "When God smote Sodom and Gomorrah."

"Smitten" is, indeed the past tense for one who was the object of the smiting. "He was smitten," but, by connotation, it is usually a nice thing - "He was smitten with her."

I smite
I am smiting
I smote

I have been smitten

Perhaps to convey the correct tone for the conversation in question, one could say "struck down."

It may be easier if you say swim, swam, have swum.

Those principal parts are present tense, past tense, and past participle.
The past participle is used with 'to have' to form the perfect tenses --- or with 'to be' to form the passive voice. Or it may be used as an adjective.

I'm not sure where you get that idea but most of the standard tenses are used by pretty much all normal people very often.

I walk
I am walking
I walked
I was walking
I had walked
I have walked
I had been walking
I used to walk
I would walk
I will walk
I will have walked
I would have walked
...

These (and the rest) are all still in standard, everyday use by anyone whose Mother Tongue is English (Americans, at least). It's only the people who learn English as a new language who don't really comprehend the differences in the tenses (because English is more time/action oriented than many other languages - all that I've ever known anything about, at least) and don't use very many of them - and the ebonic speakers who only have 3 tenses ... on a good day.

If anything, I would expect new tenses to begin appearing - because English is super-flexible and adaptive like that. Our tenses are created by associating structural words, not conjugating verbs like the barbaric languages other people have to deal with.

"I would have walked" is a tense every bit as much as "I walk" is. "I walk" says nothing about actually walking in any time frame but is only declaration that I can, and do, walk. "I walk to work" doesn't really have any tense ... but I'll bet you would call it present tense. "I would walk" or "I would have walked" is no different in that respect.

And "will" is how we signify simple future tense ... unless you still use "shall" ...
