NFL Decides at League Meeting That It Will Not Require Players to Stand for National Anthem

It will merely suggest that they do so.

Don Surber discusses the NFL's cash cow drying up, and links this great Victor Davis Hansen article about our failing institutions of civic unity (the media, the NFL, etc.), which contribute to the nation's rush into total dissolution.

Which, at this point, in my opinion, is as inevitable as it is welcome.

The public is turning the channel on what used to be the markers of its weekly existence.

Slowly and by hit and miss, Americans are learning that they do not need to go to a theater to see another Harvey Weinstein movie; or watch network news or read traditional journalism; or, on NFL Sunday, see more zillionaires in their luxury boxes above grow giddy as their employees below score, only to see a showboating player kneel on all fours to mimic a urinating dog, which is apparently less offensive than standing for the national anthem.

We have no common values, and we increasingly have no common culture. Progressives spearhead efforts to remove a common language.

With nothing left in common, how are the states united in anything but name?

Call an Article 5 convention, enact an amendment permitting secession, and let two or three or four young and vital New Americas bloom out of the dead stump of the old one.

The left had to import 50 million new voters since Billy Clinton only got 43% of the vote in 1992. Most of the people that seem completely leftist have swallowed whole the provable lies ... like Hillary destroying evidence, and deciding she can move top secret stuff onto her private open to the world servers. Or take 100's of millions in return for uranium and supersonic missile tech.

It is still possible that full revealing of these crimes cracks the left ... and America First seems reasonable, and the insanity of 'open borders' arises from the PC ashes as obvious.

Don't think that it would require the Federal government. You forsake the laws of the land, the laws of the land no longer protect you. And with a contiguous border next to potentially hostile tribes, and/or hostile tribes within, I think you might see a return to the wild west in short order, while you have given up the protection of the Federales.

Just because an existing government decides it wants to splinter off, it does not mean that they are owed continuity of allegiance/deference.

You know, when they put the rule in the operations manual about standing for the National Anthem.

When they knew who their customers were--you, me.
Guys who get up and go to work before the Sun rises and often don't return home until it's dark.

Now?

They are so inconsistent and hypocritical with their "sensitivity" yammering. Jeff Lurie was all about being an "agent of social change" when the Eagles signed Michael Vick. However when a lineman or DB, can't recall the position...got nabbed speeding across the Ben Franklin bridge with a PA legal gun (not legal in NJ)...they cut him without further ado.

Football is in no way a "need".

It is a "want".

Not even a high level want...a sort of "eh, I got nuthin' better to do and I like seeing the Cowboys win" kinda want.

There is always something else to do.

No the NFL won't go away or bankrupt, but it will lose its status as a bit of Apple Pie Americana.

It will exist at a lower pay/lower status level...like pro-bowling.

And at that point, who cares to watch a bunch of guys who have the Privilege of Playing a Kid's Game into their late 30s/early 40s display their contempt for the people and country which allows them this privilege?

And the stupidest thing of all was this was a lame-ass bit of lookitmeism from Cupodicks, a guy who no longer has enough game to play in the big time.

Curious as to what excuse she used for the switch. (I assume she once loved you or said she did.)

I'm fascinated by the reasons given. Especially these days of entitlement and rampant feminism.

Does anyone wonder about the fact that since no fault divorce became almost universal in the states that divorces are initiated by the women in 70percent of all filings?

That the majority of states have some sort of communal property laws and laws requiring the husband to give up residence in a house he's paid for and somehow find other shelter when his pay only barely helped pay for the house he's been removed from? That you never hear about these inequities from the feminists and male bashers. Only about wife abuse. (which also begs the question, what about the man when he is abused by his wife? Happens more than you think and not a small number.)

Ah well. You've gotten me started. I'll shut up now.

Oh, and who gets the nukes?

261 Here's the thing.

The NFL could have nipped this all in the bud last year by telling Kopernick's coach that he can't protest on the job, to stand up and be a part of the team. But they didn't. Now, too manay are involved in this idiotic stunt because the NFL set precedent that its perfectly fine to spend on job time with your personal schemes and tantrums, so they can't say no at this point. To many players are involved and how they have leverage and strength to defy the team and the league.

If they'd been smart about it, this would have been handled right up front. But they weren't and now they can soak in it.

262 OFFS, it's only football. "We" never declared it a national institution, and by the way that did not happen in the 70's. Football's PR department, not entirely divorced from certain shadowy gambling interests, worked from the 1930's on to Heisman-off the ethics lobby trying to outlaw it. Because--spoiler--it's crooked.

It will shock some of you snot-noses standing on my lawn that Rock and Roll Music was not part of the real-American football experience. It will shock you only because you've grown up with its glossy production values. Real football, pro, college, and high school, marched to Sousa. Even great old classic rock and roll like Elvis and the early Rolling Stones had no place there. Truth of the matter? Just looking like a rock fan could get you roughed up at any football game a scant 50 years ago. It changed.

Football wheedled its way into the National Institution business, to keep the baksheesh flowing. If the rest of us do not choose to "evolve" with the bootleggers and dope-dealers, well, we had Most Popular Sports before this one and they weren't all team ball games. Folks managed to have a good time.

Crew boat races, open-air swim meets, and rifle matches were the most popular spectator sports at the turn of the last century. American motor sport -- sprint cars and the Indianapolis 500 -- were immeasurably bigger than football in the 1950's. All those events are still being held. And they sell tickets for the public to watch. Compared to a hundred or so to watch the Ghetto Motherfuggas bash heads with the Drugged-Up Mish-Snatchers, admission is a tremendous bargain.

I know it's a metric four-by-four to the side of the head for sommayaz, but we don't need a constitutional convention to decide we like another game better.

Right now, there is an illegal alien in custody, charged with arson in connection with the Sonoma County wildfires.

Have ICE put together a large SWAT team, and have them surround the facility where he is being held. Wetback doesn't leave, or get transferred, without ICE's say-so.

If California LEO's attempt to interfere with ICE, or worse, fire upon them, Trump declares California to be in rebellion, and send troops into Sacramento to arrest Jerry Brown, and all the Dems in the legislature, and hang them on the spot for treason.

How much hate is real and how much is manufactured?

How many players are being forced to kneel, knowing that if they don't their team mates will let them get hurt on the field?

How many locally are doing it for attention?

Back in the day, there used to be something called the Silent Majority.

Today, those are the people that voted for Trump.

Bitter: I've detailed my woes before, but let me chime in. As the only working parent in the house, I did all I could to keep my marriage together. It takes a while for these dysfunctional people to fully out themselves. I left because of harm to myself and my kid. HE got the house, I got the payments. I was even in a shelter while I had to pay his bills during the divorce (because I couldn't reduce the value of communal "assets.")

I lost the house and one of my retirement accounts. He didn't work during the marriage, so what got split was EVERYTHING I HAD WORKED FOR. So much for supporting someone "in the arts."

306 Let's not forget that the 1st Amendment protects peaceful "protests" like kneeling for whatever or standing or sitting or laying around....done peacefully.
It's not like the players are inciting violence.
Other folks have the freedom to not watch.
I'm not watching nfl, haven't in years, and won't ever again.
We should all cherish our freedoms to choose.

Instead of trying to force players or 'actors' to stand up for something, they should simply be mocked and shunned as ridiculous, petty, ironic, and hypocritical.
Viewers tuning out is accomplishing exactly that, silently. Cutting the cord, not watching, not caring, and not ever going back is the course for me, an individual.
I can't make a millionaire child-man care for America or her symbols or anthems any more than he can make me care about his "protest" of her.

I still love the game of football, the strategies, the decisions, the grit, the togetherness that exemplifies teamwork, but I can no longer watch national football on account of the individuals not realizing what whole they are a part of.
They can choose to kneel. I can choose, too.
That is another great thing about America and the freedoms we all have, for now.
I have the freedom to laugh at them and not empower them with attention or money.
I have that freedom, until they tell me that laughing is 'hate speech', which is the endgame for SJW's here and abroad.
I choose to laugh at them, soundly and loudly.

'Merica!

310 it's only football.

Yeah, NFL is an institution because they got rich and bought themselves into being an institution. People behind the game were geniuses at promotion and emotional manipulation, they did such a good job at turning basically a dull game into an exciting super spectacle with sound and graphics and replays and exciting-seeming narration.

When you turn what, 20 minutes of play into 4 hours of TV time and people still watch... its not the product, its you being really good at shaping the product and selling it.

The NFL was built by geniuses but isn't being run by them now. They're messing up the formula and getting it wrong, and as a result people are walking away.

After a decades long hiatus I would tune in to games from time to time because my workplace was highly testosterized and I felt like I needed material for water cooler convos. I noticed how everything surrounding the game had gotten turbo-charged and amped up: radio announcer voices, graphics for the pre-game shows which by the way started on Saturday evening and continued on through game time.

It was all over the top and too much. Then the Sandusky scandal erupted and the awful situation in Sayreville NJ football team. I wondered wtf had happened to this game that used to be ...just a sport?

It really is, IMO, for many reasons. (I'm prejudiced, I'll admit.)

First, people don't get hurt.

Second, it's not nearly as specialized.

Third, because it's not as specialized, it tends to select for normal-sized people. The typical MLB player is around 6'1" 205 lbs. (With some exceptions, either way, of course.) It's not generally an advantage to be 7 feet tall, or weigh 300 lbs., because you have to haul that around in the field and on the bases.

In what other major sport would an Altuve be MVP, at 5'6" 170 lbs.? Hell, Willie Mays was only 5'10", 170 lbs.

Will throw it out there again.

Don't know the mechanics/ins and outs of it, but Trump should instruct Mattis to disengage DOD from support for the NFL, now that they've formalized their stupid racist stunt-culture.

No flyovers. No color guards (where provided out of DOD resources). And especially - no advertizing associated with NFL broadcasts or events. Zero.

It is beyond outrageous that the USG - and the DOD itself - would in any way support this idiocy with taxpayers' $$$$.

Wonder if this idea has occurred to the WH or anyone at the five-sided puzzle palace?

The longer the games got, the louder and more spectacular it had to be to keep interest and hide how little was actually going on.

The Superbowl pregame stuff is the ultimate overkill. Week upon week of buildup and interviews and retrospectives and on and on.

Because its just one game. A couple hours and the entire season is over with. They need to milk it for more. Other sports its a multi-game final series so they have more days of content to keep attention and make money with. Football has just one game. So they milk it for all its worth ad its... really unappealing.

Second, it's not nearly as specialized.

Third, because it's not as specialized, it tends to select for normal-sized people. The typical MLB player is around 6'1" 205 lbs. (With some exceptions, either way, of course.) At this point, if this were really about whatever the players claim it
is about, they would give it up because it's only alienating people from
their cause.

I got into a pretty lengthy twitter argument months ago about this. It was enlightening.

What do you and I believe is the point of a protest? To raise awareness and bring others to our cause, right? To say, "This is good/this is bad, and here's why." Because we protest to change things from the ground up.

The leftists sniping at me in my timeline were of a different view. "No, protest is to force change. It's to make people in power uncomfortable so that they fix things."

To leftists it's not about gaining support from the ground up, but about coercing action from the top down.

That made the Mizzou debacle make so much more sense in my eyes. Here are a bunch of idiot students complaining about some illusory affront to their dignity, but instead of getting their faces and placards in front of every camera they could find, they were actively keeping cameras AWAY. Hence Melissa Click's "I need some muscle over here!" gaffe.

At the time I wondered why any protest worth its salt would be actively trying to AVOID publicity. Now I know. They don't want to persuade and cause organic social change. They want to shortcut that whole business and go straight to the levers of power to force artificial, socially engineered change from above.

Once I'd made that realization I felt awfully silly for not figuring it out sooner, since it perfectly matches the left's modus operandi in all other things.

I wasn't sure until yesterday. A known actor came out and w/o using Affleck, Clooney, Damon, or Streep's names, called them liars. He said anyone who had been in Hollywood 5 years knew about this. That he had heard stories for over 25.

He said that people had tried to do something about it and been destroyed.

I don't mind interleague play, but I hate the DH rule. It's a step toward the "footballization" of MLB, i.e., the tendency toward specialization.

Think how much fun football would be if everyone played both ways again. Now coaches would have to balance a player's performance on offense against his performance on defense, and conditioning would be a huge factor.

Now it's like those video games where you get to choose maximum firepower, maximum armor, and maximum speed, i.e., you don't have to make any tactical decisions on firepower vs. armor vs. speed.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at October 18, 2017 02:43 PM (SRKgf)

=============

Cutting out virtually everything you wrote in favor of one small thing:

I hate interleague play because it feels less consequential in some ways that the rest of the games. I also think it's lazily put together (especially the idea of following the rules of the home league). I'd be a fair bit happier if the home team had to adopt the opposite league's rules, especially around the DH. Give the home audience a perspective of the other league's play up close.

Also, it seems to make the WS less consequential on some level. We could have two teams that already met this year. The only rematches should be from previous WS's.

429 I always love the fat relief pitchers.

I do too, fat pitchers, period. I love it when some tubby gets out there and hits well too. This is baseball, you don't have to look like adonis.

I don't like interleague play either. It messes up the schedule, it weakens rivalries, it makes the All-Star game more meaningless. Wrong move, but of all the changes they've made recently probably the least wrong.

Oh, you know what they want for the future? Like maybe next year?

In extra inning games, start spotting runners on base when the inning starts. To get it over faster, you see. Some of those extra inning games were as long as a single regular football game for crying out loud.

========

Yes. Electricity, roads, watermains, etc. The infrastructure is too tightly connected.

I think the way this would work itself out would be if individual states seceded, and would drastically change their policies towards cities, for instance really cracking down on sanctuary cities. The people in these cities would then migrate out of the red nation to the blue nation of their own volition. Blue states would no doubt do the same. In other words there would be two phases to secession: voter driven phase to get the state to secede, then a policy driven phase to persuade people to resettle.

As far as the product that Hollywood puts out, that only changes if people stop watching it. They already appear bankrupt of ideas. Everything is Superhero movies or re-boots. The problem I see with dissolution is that in just about every case it's
not entire states that are going rogue, it's specific regions and often
just the large metro areas. New York would be a far different state
without the NYC metro area for example. Or Atlanta in Georgia.

How you go about peeling them away while retaining the rest of the state is beyond me.

People can vote with their feet. If Austinites or Madisonians don't want to live in the USA, they can move back to the California Republic. If Illini don't want to live in a nation dominated by Chicago, they can move to The USA -- Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, etc.

I can see a couple of cases where a big chunk of the new nation may secede and want to join the USA, as West Virginia did. Perhaps that would include northern and eastern California, eastern Oregon and Washington, and upstate New York.

But in general, I would think there would be a reshuffling of population.

It's got to be the world's longest con job. That's the only answer. Idiotic notions of cultural appropriation aside, "ways to keep shit out of our water" tend to be among those things that spread easily between cultures, because no one wants to drink sewage water. Africa is not some far-flung place with no access to the outside world. It's been long enough by now that "don't drink downstream of the herd" should have sunk into the continental consciousness.

So it's a con job, but it's a con job that's gone on FOREVER. I mean hell, if I could get a bunch of eager, earnest college grads to fix up my house, dig me a well, hand me a wad of cash and inoculate my chickens, and all I had to do in return is nod my head and say, "I understand," I'd be signing up for it without a second thought.

Men allowed it. So did women. Rose and Ashley allowed it. So did Jane Fonda, Gwyneth Paltrow, Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Tom Hanks, and dozens of others who KNEW and DID NOTHING. Don't blame me for making this political. Agreed. But you see that this 60 year evolution of corporate "social responsibility" has seeped into almost anything / everything that is purchased and produced on a large scale and scope.

It is sickening to me that you buy one thing and finance the both the producer and third parties in the purchase price (govt, and socially responsible third party linked to the producer).

A lot of this is due to the tax-code, where corporations can deduct charitable & inkind contributions to these 501c entities - the SJW social responsible ones. The utility company is likely spending dollars on an SJW environmental project, but wouldn't know it without checking it out for yourself. So are the "evil" big oil companies. They have been forced to finance things contrary to their initial business purpose.

But you are right, the less you willingly finance these efforts, the better.

Ask ISIS in Raqqa

Ask the "mainstream media" as they become more and more trivial.

Small things; large things... doesn't matter. There is no more "polite" left. Perhaps we don't start it, but we don't roll over any more. We take our money and we leave. We take our votes, and we leave. We deploy troops - troops who overwhelmingly are us - and we let them do their jobs.

539 The whole business model of Hollywood and the NFL relies on one thing: An audience. Eyeballs, butts in seats, etc. They are pissing off a significant percentage of people, everyday - millions of potential paying customers. As the old saying goes, it's a lot cheaper to retain an existing customer than get a new one.

There's also a whole generation of people who do not want to pay for ANYTHING - They watch videos on YouTube, or pirate movies, or play video games they buy six months after release for 50% off. I have three sons, and only one of them expresses any interest in any movies at all. All three barely watch TV, one not at all. They are not atypical. The "coveted" 18-34 year old bracket are tuning out, and politics have nothing to do with it.

You keep your customers HAPPY, by providing VALUE for their dollars. And right now, while many are struggling... the economy is improving. Gas prices, energy costs, and food costs are down... and increasing competition is driving down the prices of goods and services across America. Any extra dollars people have... in many cases, it's not going to Hollywood.

The final shoe to drop is Netflix. Netflix is THE big disruptor, as it started the movement of people from theaters to their homes - pouring BILLIONS into original content. Amazon has followed suit.

The problem is, the growth and spending they have poured into creating new content - it's not sustainable. If Netflix and Amazon stop spending it will cripple many if not all studios and production companies... Netflix will spend $8 BILLION next year. What if people stop subscribing, and they then stop that spend? DOOM.

I think it'll happen by 2019/2020. Hulu/Netflix/Amazon/etc. will pull back from original content. Disney will sell ABC and ESPN. Time Warner will dump CNN. And Hollywood will be BEGGING people to watch their shows and movies. BEGGING.

THAT'S a show I'll enjoy watching.

Now they have pivoted to attempting to lock-in a smaller but rabidly partisan sub set of their remaining viewers. For this to succeed they need to remain a topic of conversation among their former viewers. Their only value now is in being able to draw in viewers who perceive them as an effective tool to agitate the other.

The means to deny them this is to deny them any further mindspace at all. Do not post about not watching. Do not discuss their latest attempt to provoke controversy. Simply cease making any mention of them whatsoever.

In order to that, they need command their former audience's attention through continued acts of provocation. Without that attention, they cannot inject the narrative into the media stream and the whole enterprise fails. With it, they are able to nurse along with a smaller, partisan audience and the free promotion that comes through commentary on the web and linking to monetized video. The advertisers will figure it out soon enough.

I'm not saying we should ignore them to be polite. I'm saying we should ignore them because it is now the thing that will ensure the rotten enterprise comes crashing down.

550 Again I state that i would rather have a vote to throw a state out. I'm sure California would win that vote, depending on your definition of win.

551 @549:

If it has achieved ratings low enough to reflect the last viewers mostly are SJWs, agreed. I still have non-SJW friends and family who watch, and do badger them about it. That's obviously not going to bring attention to the Zombie NFL.

552 All the empty seats at all of these stadiums... Those are season ticket holders, staying home.

So the impact to the NFL this year is minimal. They don't show up, then they don't buy beer and hot dogs, or overpriced jerseys.

When all those people decide to not buy season tickets NEXT season? And when local business don't buy those expensive skyboxes? That's when the NFL will see the material impact to their bottom line.

So don't expect any change this year. Expect a HOLY SHIT FIX THIS moment around about August/September next year.

553 Secession? spoken like a true Yankee.

We already tried that, my friend: and They never "let" you go.

Oh, and before everyone starts yelping about fighting "for slavery" -- 98% OF SOUTHERNERS OWNED NO SLAVES.

The vast majority of Confederate soldiers were fighting for, get this: Southern INDEPENDENCE. And to get the Yankees out of the South and off of their necks.

Moral of that episode is this: the section of the country that won had 3 times the manpower and 5 times the money, also almost all the iron foundries, etc., and heavy industry needed to fight a war.

After the war, the North didn't "readmit" the Southern states to the Union -- they ruled the South with MILITARY RULE for NINE YEARS, and they also stripped the vote from Every Single Person who either fought for the Confederacy or "gave aid and comfort to" their fellow Southerners.

In other words, the North broke the South's back for trying to escape their dominance, and they were vindictive in victory. They also set up the toxic conditions for the blacks to be scapegoated: simultaneously with stripping the white male Southerners of the vote, the Yankees gave the vote to the illiterate black males. The latter were innocent, but they were also puppets in the hands of the conquerors, and that led to the pendulum swinging hard in the other direction when white Southerners finally got control of their own states back.

IOW, it was no romantic crusade to free the slaves: it was a brutal power/$$$ struggle.
