Trump Will Deliver Speech Pushing Tax Reform to Hand-Picked Group of Truck-Drivers in Harrisburg Pennsylvania

He's speaking to truckers because, like farmers, they are often hit with a death tax bill the company can't pay (they have a lot of equipment, not a lot of cash) and wind up having to sell off assets.

He'll speak in a hangar with a lot of big rig trucks around him, which is good theatrics.

Trump also will devote a significant portion of his speech to truckers, a "major beneficiary" of the tax plan, which proposes to lower the corporate tax rate to around 20 percent, although Trump hopes to see that number at 15 percent, a senior White House official told PennLive.com.

The tax alleviation would also allow manufacturers to spend more on production, thus providing truckers with more driving opportunities.

In addition, Republican lawmakers are also looking to reframe the current individual tax rate, from 39.6 percent to 35 percent, as well as simplify the complex tax code, and "deliver the lowest tax rates on businesses in modern history," Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, head of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, told reporters on Capitol Hill.

He'll also be pushing his plan to lower rates for repatriating American companies' money which is parked overseas, outside the American economy, and won't be brought back in because the tax rates for doing so are too forbidding. He'll say that the secondary effects of bringing trillions of dollars back into the US will result in $4000 benefit for each American family.

The speech is planned to start at 5:45.

I think FoxNews will be airing the speech here, but I'll have to check back when the speech starts. Fox puts up the link for its live-streamed speeches very late, which often makes me just link CNN, even though they're #FakeNews.

Livestream: Fox finally put it up.

Corporate tax rates have a big impact on unemployment, job growth and operations. Take down the corporate rate, more people are employed, more people get a better wage, and productivity increases.

I agree, with one exception.

Media and entertainment companies produce nothing new in any physical sense they just tell stories, allow people a diverting way to waste time and generally redistribute other people's wealth.

So for that reason, I propose a 50% gross receipts tax for all media and entertainment companies, including all sports venues. let that money do something besides flow into the pockets of the Weinstein's and the Iger's.

109 Corporations do not pay taxes. They pass them through to you.
Posted by: JackStraw

Not exactly, but a big corporation can do things to alter their bottom line, in terms of what their real profit actually is. This then alters their taxation by the government.

But to consider your point, major corporations figure out what the cost of their major products are, and what the projected earnings and profit will be going forward.

For example, Ford figures out how many cars; Fusions, Explorers, etc they are going to sell in a fiscal year. How much will their operating expenses be; what will it cost to meet those, pay expected taxes on earnings, and show a profit for the stockholders.
They set selling costs of whatever their product is, to cover their expected costs, EBIT, and also anticipate what their taxes will be, if all things actually work out.

When things don't, then they look for rules in corporate tax law to prevent themselves from paying more taxes.

Good snark aside, I really would like a reconcentration of effort on real health care reform, and the repeal of the Obamunist mess, *before* tax reform. Although the corporate rates are just too damn high, and the same leftists who snivel about exporting jobs need mirrors held to their faces as to who is to blame for that.

Tax reform will greatly stimulate the economy. We all know that.

However, will it mask the damage the Obamunist did, in the same way that an oil boom masked the damage that Socialist policy was doing to Venezuelans?

When it doesn't work out companies take a hit. When it consistently doesn't work out companies cut costs, i.e. employees, and any other expenses they can which are usually difficult and if that doesn't work they move to a place with a lower tax burden.

Which is why corporate tax rates matter, but in a very competitive industry, it is not always possible to price your goods and services so that your anticipated tax payments are completely covered.

In a very broad sense, absolutely. All their earnings and then profits come from sales of something, from which taxes are paid if you turn a profit (at least Federal tax). But in a narrow sense, it is not always possible to price your tax obligation into pricing. The tax obligation remains if you turn a profit, but you do have to consider it somewhere.

The point, then, to lowering the corporate tax rate is to make business more attractive to operate in America, and to allow more aggressive pricing and productivity in businesses already working, because their expected tax bill will be smaller.

I don't think we are really disagreeing. It's more complex than any single statement but the underlying truth is that corporate taxes are passed on to consumers one way or the other in the long run.

Posted by: JackStraw at October 11, 2017 06:20 PM (/tuJf)

157 Not exactly, but a big corporation can do things to alter their bottom line, in terms of what their real profit actually is. This then alters their taxation by the government.

Here's what I proposed while working in corporate tax, even though it would eliminate my job. (Which, hell, it should).

Public companies have an incentive to show high earnings to their shareholders, which boosts their share price.

They have an incentive to show low earnings to the government to reduce their tax burden.

As things stand, they get to produce one set of accounts for the SEC and one for the government. It would be a great simplification and keep things honest-ish if they just paid taxes on the 10K income they report to the SEC.

I get that--I am in the same boat, and I am accordingly apprehensive about having the itemization rug pulled out from under me.

However, if in the end I am taking home more pay and paying less out than what I had to pay with this new plan, I will be happy, even if my nominal "refund" isn't so big, because that "refund" is excess withheld. So I will watch the total paid out and asee what happens.

The way my church is participating is (and I think this is how it is supposed to work) that you have the three national speakers on simulcast and three locals live.

194 I don't think we are really disagreeing. It's more complex than any single statement but the underlying truth is that corporate taxes are passed on to consumers one way or the other in the long run.
Posted by: JackStraw at October 11, 2017 06:20 PM (/tuJf)

And one of my big beefs is the welfare given to corporations by states. Just cut your corporate tax. Why penalize an existing company? Just cut it or eliminate the corporate tax altogether. Use that as the carrot.

Granted. Google, or some other BIGCORP, stockholders win and may live out of state. But what is gained in other ways?

Oh, and the model Uncle Harvey tried to force into a three-way was Cara Delevigne. Uncle Harv had called her to his hotel for a meeting about a part in a movie. He asked her up to his room.

When she got inside, there was another woman sitting there, who sounds like a hired professional. Uncle Harvey ordered Cara to start making out with her.

She said she started singing loudly and went to leave. Uncle Harvey tried to kiss her. Singing. I guess that beats pissing or crapping yourself as the feminists advise.

Anyway, she got the part anyway, apparently.

And how many of that fire area was declared "Wilderness", upon which logging, livestock grazing, and brush clearing were banned, or worse, where access roads were removed?

With most great Western forest and range fires, there are eco-fiends to blame.

211 the question about Vanilla Ice caused me to look up his wiki stub.

Okay, now that gave me a good laugh! Some excerpts:

"In December 2011 he played Captain Hook in a pantomime production of Peter Pan. He also turned on the Christmas lights for Rochester, Kent."

"In May 2012 he helped in the launch of the Mr. Freeze Reverse Blast Roller Coaster at 6 Flags over Texas, and gave a Free Concert for those who had validated parking tickets."

The best of all:

"On September 15, 2013, Vanilla Ice performed at the halftime show of a Houston Texans game. The Texans went on to lose the next 14 games in a row, leading some players to blame Vanilla Ice for the losing streak."

Oh, and he recently participated in the widely known and highly consequential Juggalo March on Washington.

213 How do I stop overpaying my taxes as a state employee? It's not like I filled out a form stating that I should pay so much in taxes...

I get that--I am in the same boat, and I am accordingly apprehensive about having the itemization rug pulled out from under me...
Posted by: Curmudgeon - 2017 GNAMM survivor at October 11, 2017 06:21

CPT...When you were first hired they had you fill out a form w/ your number of exemptions you will be taking, they figure your taxes on that. If there are just 2 of you you can claim 3 and less tax will then be taken out.

In my case, when I was farming, to avoid a lot in quarterly payments I claimed 1 rather than 2. So I had more taken out than based on my salary and paid less in quarterly payments.

Curm...I think what Trump is talking about is eliminating the itemized deduction for state and local taxes, then doubling the standard exemption. Depending on your location it could mean up down or neutral.

All just as I understand it. I've been doing my own taxes since I started working, just over 50 yrs. But that doesn't mean I'm correct on the changes.

215 The FCC assigns it to local stations.  NBC doesn't have a licence.  About 200 NBC affiliates have licences.   The licences they have aren't based on being affiliates of NBC.  They just have licences and broadcast NBC programming.   That includes news but it also includes everything else including sticoms, movies, sports, local programming etc.

They idea that the executive branch of the government is going to pull the broadcast licence of scores of local television stations because the president doesn't like the editorial position of the news organization they broadcast is beyond laughable, illegal, and even possible.  The courts would stop that faster than you can say "Prior Restraint".
