NBC News Tried to Kill Harvey Weinstein Story
Ronan Farrow published his story at the New Yorker, despite being an NBC News freelance correspondent until recently.
Why? Because NBC News claimed the story "wasn't ready for prime time." The New Yorker seemed to disagree. So did the New York Times, which had a lot of the same reporting.Appearing on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show--which, like NBC, is a property of NBC Universal and its parent company Comcast--Farrow disputed what sources said was NBC News President Noah Oppenheim’s judgment this past summer that Farrow's reporting on the movie mogul and the women he allegedly harassed and assaulted wasn’t ready for prime-time. Addressing a controversy that has been percolating for the past several days in the media ecosystem since The New York Times published its own Weinstein expose--including questions about whether NBC executives caved to the well-connected Weinstein and his formidable lawyers, Charles Harder, Lisa Bloom, and David Boies--Maddow brought it to a boiling point by telling Farrow: "NBC says that the story wasn't publishable, that it wasn't ready to go at the time that you brought it to them.” Farrow fired back: "I walked into the door at The New Yorker with an explosively reportable piece that should have been public earlier. And immediately, obviously, The New Yorker recognized that. And it is not accurate to say that it was not reportable. In fact, there were multiple determinations that it was reportable at NBC." ... But an NBC source promptly contradicted Farrow’s late-night claim, telling The Daily Beast in a statement: "Ronan has had a non-exclusive relationship with NBC News for the last year. He brought NBC News early reporting [on Weinstein] that didn't meet the standard to go forward with a story; it was nowhere close to what ultimately ran in The New York Times or The New Yorker--for example, at that time he didn't have one accuser willing to go on the record or identify themselves."Well that's what an anonymous source claims. Why not put a name to that? Another anonymous source contradicts NBC:
According to a television-industry insider familiar with Farrow's NBC News project, however, "Farrow and his producer had been working this for 10 months. They had eight interviews on camera, with a mix of silhouette and not-silhouette--so eight women speaking. They had an NYPD audio tape, and they had enough for a story. And NBC did everything they could to delay it, complicate it, and ultimately Noah [Oppenheim] killed it. NBC shut it down." This person continued: “It is what it is, and everybody can see it. It's crazy. There's no reason, journalistically, for the story to have been killed. Obviously, there was some other reason--and I don't know what that is.”Ken Auletta, who'd been covering Harvey Weinstein for a long time, offered his own opinion in an (unaired) interview with NBC itself: "This evidence is so overwhelming that if NBC News sits on it, that will be a scandal." Correction: Based on the transcript of Maddow's questioning, I previously wrote that Maddow seemed to be a "worker bee" defending her employer. However, watching the video at Hot Air, she doesn't appear to be defending NBC. She seems to be asking the questions neutrally -- "NBC says this, what do you say?" Same words, but she comes off more objective in the video.

I only heard that one exchange as a soundbite, but it sounded like one of two things - either Maddow had no idea that NBC had passed on it and was trying to criticize Farrow for taking what was obviously a hot story to the competition, or she was trying to criticize NBC and arranged with Farrow to ask that question.
There may be more context that makes neither of those operative or one or the other more operative, but my gut is the former - she is a True Believer so she wants to think NBC is a crusader for the wimmenz and stuff.

There is also something bad going in in Nor Cal with 17 fires clustered in one area.
This is shaping up to be the 2nd worst fire disaster since the Oakland Hills fire.
One fire has been blamed on a PG&E power line but the windstorm that damaged it didn't start fires outside a fairly clustered area.
Too many fires clustered in three areas....and others started where there are few/no people. It's been going on for a couple years now.

Someone or several people speculated that Harvey gave money to Hillary was a big Hillary supporter, and that this is Obama's attempt to get Hillary finally out of the picture so that what's her name-kampala Harris can run in 2020.

Tom Steyer, a billionaire California investor who spent more than $91 million supporting Democrats in the 2016 elections, issued the demand to his party in a letter on Wednesday. In his message, Mr. Steyer described Mr. Trump as a "clear and present danger to the republic" and called on Democrats to pledge that they would seek to remove him from office if they take control of Congress next year.
Mr. Steyer -- who is considering a run for Senate, perhaps against Senator Dianne Feinstein, a fellow Democrat -- cited a range of acts by Mr. Trump to justify impeachment, including the president's "relationship with Vladimir Putin and Russia," allegations that Mr. Trump has used the presidency to "promote his own business interests" and his "seeming determination to go to war."
Democrats helped cover for Harvey Weinstein for years, and he doesn't have anything like Steyer's money.

But for most of them. I don't think they can - they took that position because they were so proud that they Could Not Stand for any challenge to their Precious Political Essence, plus they were figured they were so smart that they would of course be proved right in the end.
To walk it back would mean swallowing a lot of their pride, and I think we're seeing very well just who can and who cannot ever do that. Iowahawk may be clever enough to exist on the sidelines of punditry, although I think he'll find it disappointing to just be considered an also ran from everyone from now on.
But for most of the never-trumpers like Max Boot, Bill Kristol-nacht and the entire remaining staff of the National Review, rhe right is done with them, and the left will always hate them. I foresee a grinding descent into total obscurity and unemployment, except in either the food service or home sanitation industries, for all of them.

Dad is still in the hospital because the hospital and the rehab place are doing the paperwork dance to get him released from the hospital and transferred over.
The problem is that Dad thought he was leaving last Thursday and he's still there and he's driving Mommy absolutely insane about it.
The caseworker at the hospital told he and Mommy yesterday that everything was in the works so Dad took that to mean he was going to be out by like noon yesterday. The final insurance approval didn't come through until almost 5 p.m. yesterday and now they are waiting for the doctor to sign the final orders and Dad is calling Mommy every half hour and it's all a mess.
I, being a wonderful person, am Brave Sir Robining this as hard as humanly possible. I heaved Mommy right under the bus a bit ago and told her to go to Cookout and get Dad an orange push up shake and take it down to him to try to appease him.
I understand their frustration, I really really do, it's just that I'm used to how all of this works because of dealing with it professionally so from my perspective everything is moving along as it should.
On the other hand, Dad is well enough now that Mommy told him to stop calling her so that's nice.

Hahahaha. Hey, I was not pro Trump in the beginning either. I was mortified. I did not have a high opinion of the man.
But after a while, watching the media meltdown, watching the weakness of the other candidates at the debates, and so on, my opinions began to change. Things evolved. Look, both the candidates sucked. The govt. is corrupt. Trump became the hail mary pass. He's done better then I expected.
And the depth of corruption and decay has been exposed. The rot under the veneer was much worse than I thought...and I knew it was bad.

But as the primaries rolled on, it began to dawn on me that no matter how much we here in Texas liked Cruz, he just didn't play that well in other parts of the country, especially up north.
I think it may have been because he was never able to really hide what all of us here in Texas take for granted, that is that all the rest of you suck when you're compared to us, and if we need your support we'll beat it out of you. That attitude doesn't bother anyone here, but it seems to bother the rest of you, and I guess I get that.
Trump, as crass and clueless as he can be, still knows how to do it in a way that makes him fit in almost everywhere in this country. Almost everywhere - not California, of course. But who cares.

Cool. Mine played 3 varsity sports each in high school ---all contact sports. Football, wrestling, lacrosse. Rugby in the summer. The DC metro scouts are dorks, but so are their parents. I was embarrassed for them.

What drives people who are capable of solid conservative thought to be #NeverTrumpers? I want a psychological study. Does he intimidate them somehow on a subconscious level? Are they really unable to over look that? I found Obama, Bush and Clinton far more revolting in their mannerisms and physical appearance than Trump. They are all kind of grotesque in comparison. I don't get the psychological source of the unthinking revulsion.

And
If somebody came forward with a suit against one of these people [who molested me], I would certainly be more than happy to back them up. But that hasn't happened.

The theory I have heard is that the media is split between the Bernie Supporters/Hard Left and the Clinton/Obama Types/Left. This is a strike by the Bernie Supporting media at one of the stalwarts of the Clinton/Obama Left.
It has a certain attractiveness, I can see the two groups going at each other, and I want their Civil War to go rhetorically and legally hot with many casualties in reputations and fortunes. But I do not know the truth.

I just found out that Boy Scouts of America will start accepting girls into their Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts programs. For now the most I have is that Cub Scout dens will be single-gender and girls may join beginning in 2018.
For Boy Scouts, BSA will be working on a program for girls to be rolled out and ready for 2019. It sounds like Scout Troops will also be single gender.

Our YMCA is ultra-super PC and I know they would never allow anything with the name Indian in it. Or unsupervised play. I'm surprised they haven't changed their name yet since the Christian and Men parts could be triggering and oppressive. They are years ahead of the Cub Scouts in PC insanity.
